NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHby Joanie Brown Re-building our Neighborhood Watch network progresses.
Our initial “shout out” resulted in five most welcome volunteers; last month’s request for volunteers brought an additional seven residents forward to represent their streets. Twelve block captains will make a huge difference in our ability to pass safety alerts/information to our residents. However, in order for our program to work most effectively and efficiently, our goal for the program is to have a volunteer for each street. Stone Canyon consists of 1101 homes, spread out along approximately 42 streets—many long enough to require 2 or 3 people to share sections. If we don’t have enough street reps, each with their own list of e-mail addresses and phone #s gathered for their neighbors, we’ll be extremely limited in passing vital info to those who need it.
What will take the most time is initially touching base with the residents on your street, letting them know you’re their Neighborhood Watch rep, and asking their permission to collect their contact info to use only for Neighborhood Watch purposes. You may wish to assure them that their info will be kept confidential. The list you compile for your street will be for your use only; no requirement to share with any committee or Board member. When either a Board member or the N.Watch committee chairperson receives a safety bulletin from law enforcement, that message will be forwarded to you as your street’s rep; and you will be requested to pass it on to your contact list. If you are hesitating because you work outside your home but would be able to receive N.Watch bulletins while at your office, it should take a minimum amount of time to forward those bulletins.
Neighborhood Watch is a major weapon we residents can use against anyone who enters our neighborhoods with wrong intentions. It’s our way of staying aware and looking out for each other and our families. Please help by volunteering for this important program. Thank you.

YARD OF THE MONTH HOLIDAY LIGHTS &
DECORATIONS RECOGNITION by Joanie Brown and Amelia DansbyA reminder that members of our YOM Committee will be out and
about for Stone Canyon’s annual Holiday Lights and Decorations recognition—voting will take place, beginning Thursday evening, December 15th, ending on Tuesday evening, December 20th. Though no money is awarded, Special Recognition yard signs will be delivered to the winning homeowners before Christmas Eve.
Of one thing you can be sure--Decorations get better each year! So whether you choose to decorate your own home or not, do take a drive throughout Stone Canyon after dark so you and your family can enjoy the variety of decorations.

WASH YOUR HANDSREDUCING SPREAD OF DISEASE WHILE AT HOME & WORK
By: Concentra Urgent Care
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that nearly 90,000 patients die in U.S. hospitals each year due to a preventable disease–many could be avoided if everyone properly washed their hands. From germs on office equipment to sick colleagues who decided to come into work anyway, people face the same dangers in the workplace. The same simple factholds true: Washing your hands regularly is an effective way to prevent yourself from catching or spreading a preventable disease or illness.
WHEN TO WASH YOUR HANDSThe CDC recommends washing
your hands every time you:• Prepare or eat food• Use the restroom
• Tend to someone who is sick; both before and after
• Blow your nose, cough, or sneeze• Handle garbage• Treat a cut or wound• Change diaper or clean up after children• Handle an animal or animal waste
HAND WASHING BASICSThe CDC has issued specific guidelines
about effective hand washing:• Wet hands with water• Use plain bar or liquid soap• Create a lather by vigorously rubbing
hands together for 15-20 seconds—about the amount of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice
• Be sure to wash palms, back of hands,
fingers, and nails (clean nails by gently scratching nails down your opposing soapy palm)
• Rinse off soap under a stream of waterWHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?
• Focus on hand washing in the lunch and/or break room
• Be careful when using sponges and dish towels. These are ideal sites for bacterial growth. Always wash your hands after using these items.
• Maintain a clean work area; regularly clean any office equipment, especially shared items such as phones and keyboards.
• Remind your colleagues of the importance of hand washing, particularly when you witness someone neglecting to wash his or her hands. ®

Keeping Children Safe on Holiday Road TripsAs millions of families prepare for their
annual holiday road trips, Texans In Motion at Scott & White Healthcare would like to encourage parents and caregivers to keep safety in mind as they travel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that three out of four car seats are improperly installed.
FOLLOWING ARE SOME TIPS TO ENSURE THAT YOURCHILD IS RIDING SAFE:
• ALWAYS Buckle Up no matter if the trip is long or just a quick ride into town.
• Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.
• The best car seat is the one that fits your child, vehicle and budget.
• Read car seat and vehicle instruction manuals to ensure proper installation.
• Safety seats should move no more than 1” from the car seat’s belt path.
• Harnesses should be snug with the retainer clip at chest level.
• Booster seats are highly recommended for fourth to seventh graders who are under 4’9 tall and may not fit the adult seat belt.
Keeping these simple tips in mind may not reduce backseat sibling squabbles, but will help increase peace of mind when it comes to your child’s safety.
Texans In Motion is an injury prevention program sponsored by the Trauma Center at Scott & White Healthcare, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation. The program serves 11 Central Texas counties and focuses on child passenger safety. Our mission is to increase child passenger safety restraint use and reduce
the number of deaths and injuries to children in motor vehicle crashes through educational programs, activities and check-up events. Staff is certified under part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Standardized Child Passenger Safety Training Program.
All services provided by Texans In Motion at Scott & White Healthcare are FREE. For more information about car seats or to find a car seat inspection event in your area, please contact Texans In Motion at Scott & White Healthcare at 512-336-3423 or 512-509-0200 or visit sw.org.
