This school year has flown by! We have had so many rich learn-

ing opportunies this year for our students. Thank you to our

parents/guardians and community partners for your support. We

had such a busy month with our Fun Fair and Salmon Send-off.

Both of these events were a huge success. I must once again

acknowledge and thank our wonderful Community School

Co-ordinator, Mrs. Taryn Briscoe, for her leadership, and

Mrs. Franca Trasolini, our Community Secretary.

You may have heard that we were visited by thousands of bees

on the playground last week. The students were kept inside unl

the bees were relocated by a professional beekeeper. This was an

example of what we call “Shelter in Place”. This term is used for a

situaon that is occurring outside when we need to keep people

inside.

On June the 3rd we will be having our lockdown drill at school in

the morning. Our School Liaison Officer, Constable Fogge2, will

also be present during the drill to assist us and follow up with

classes. Teachers will prepare students in advance for the lock-

down drill.

Our planning for the next school year is now underway. There will

be some staff changes next year that I will finalize in my next

newsle5er. I would however, like to menon that long me

Stoney Creek teacher, and our Head Teacher, Christy Redmond,

has been assigned to Capitol Hill Elementary School in Septem-

ber. Her extraordinary contribuon and exemplary leadership to

our Stoney Creek community has been very much appreciated.

She will be deeply missed by all of us!

Grade 6 students helped to run our annual Welcome To Kindergarten orientation last week. They helped with setting up the event and running hands-on activity stations for our soon-to-be Kindergartners! Special thanks to Ms. Schweers and Ms. Daoust for organizing this wonderful opportunity. Thank you once again to all of our parents: Victor Lee, Sue Yoshioka, Erik Aloni, Jieun Park, Wendy Kim, Sung Sik Song, Kyung Joo Han, and the volunteers from the Tzu Chi Foundation for all of the early mornings spent at our school serving breakfast to our students in the breakfast program. Your contribution to our school is amazing! A huge thanks to our Stoney Creek Community Council (PAC) for all of your input, planning, and fundraising for Stoney students and staff. Your dedication to our school and community made the year run that much more smoothly. We truly value your ideas and partnership. Special thanks to our dedicated custodians Mr. Oliveira and Mr. Birlie who make sure everything on our school grounds and in our building runs smoothly and looks clean, bright, and shiny! You are often quietly behind the scenes, and we appreciate all that you do for us.

A huge THANK YOU to all our supporters of the Great Salmon Send-Off! It was a wonderful event with many people coming out to enjoy the festivities. Thank you to all our volunteers, the Stoney Creek Environmental

Committee, Burnaby Parks and Recreation and all our other sponsors and supporters.

Friday, June 5th

is a Pro-D Day.

Students do not attend school.

On Friday, June 19th we invite parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours to Stoney Creek’s Sports Day.

Children will participate in a number of fun events from 9:00 a.m. to about 12:00 p.m. by moving from station to station. Sports Day will proceed, rain or shine – if the weather is inclement, we will hold our activities inside. Hopefully, we will be outdoors and would like to remind everyone to come prepared with sunscreen, hats, and water. Students are also reminded to wear their house colours.

Between 11:00 and 12:00 whole school events will take place. We have changed our Hot Lunch Menu on Sports Day to pizza, snap peas, dip and milk and it will be provided to those children who have handed in an envelope for June’s Lunch Program.

There are no activities planned for the afternoon.

All students are dismissed for the day at lunch (approx. 12:30 pm).

Subway Sandwich Day!

Friday, June 19, 2015 Order forms are due to the Community

Office by Wednesday, June 10th!

A Brilliant Picture Book for ages 4 – 7

Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall

A blue crayon, that is accidently labelled red, struggles to find his identity. The powerful message in this beautifully illustrated picture book will appeal to all ages. Be sure to check out other awesome books by Michael Hall includ-ing My Heart is Like a Zoo and It’s an Orange Aardvark!

A Great Beginning Chapter Book for Readers 6 – 8

Leroy Ninker Saddles Up by Kate DiCamillo

Fans of Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson stories will love this new adventure. Leroy Ninker has everything he needs to be a cowboy. He has a hat, a lasso and boots. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a horse – until he meets Mabelline. Then the fun begins!

A Magical Mystery for Readers ages 8 – 12

Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee

Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy is the enchanted story of a brave girl, a charmed boy, a magical sword and a clock ticking down to the end of the world. This modern day fairytale is all about the power of friendship, courage and love, and never ever giving up.

A Fantastic Series for Teens

Cinder Book One of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Humans and androids crowd the streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, the ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. Only a few are looking for the Lost Princess, who maybe the last hope for Earth’s fate.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, hated by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. When her life becomes entangled with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she sud-denly finds herself at the centre of an intergalactic struggle and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

A Classic for Mom and Dad

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

If you missed this classic on your high school reading list, now is the time to enjoy it! Set in a small southern town during the depression, To Kill a Mockingbird is the compassionate, deeply moving tale of young Scout, her brother and her unconventional father. First published in 1960, it is as meaningful, humorous and heart wrenching today as it was fifty years ago.

Although Harper Lee claimed for decades that she had only written one novel, this summer marks the release of a

long hidden manuscript. Go Set a Watchman is the story of Scout as an adult returning to her small town roots.

A must read!
