Winning In StyleStony Brook fi nally broke into the win column on Saturday against Dartmouth, the 27-point victory was the largest since the Seawolves defeated the Rhode Island College 95-51 in the 2002-03 season.

Beauford Steps UpSenior Mitchell Beauford has stepped up over the last two games, averaging 17.5 points per game in the last two contests against Kentucky and Dartmouth. Beauford averaged 32.5 minutes and 17.5 points per game in the two contests last week and did not commit a single turnover.

Dominating The GlassThe Seawolves had a huge advantage on the boards on Saturday against Dartmouth, out-rebounding the Big Green 42-23. It marks the second time this season SBU has out-rebounded a team by 19, the Seawolves had a 48-29 advantage in their home opener against Lafayette.

Driving To The HoopThe Seawolves have relied less on the three-point shot over the past two contests. Stony Brook took just four shots from long-distance against Darmouth after taking just seven threes against Kentucky. That is in stark contrast to the Seawolves fi rst fi ve games when SBU took over 20 long-range shots three times and at least 12 in all fi ve contests. SBU has also defended the three-point shot well, holding its opponents to nine of 48 beyond the arc over the last three games including three for 25 over the last two.

Double-Double VisionJunior Demetrius Young had his best game in a Stony Brook uniform against Dartmouth, notching career-highs in points (12) and rebounds (14). The double-double was the fi rst for the Seawolves since Emanuel Neto recorded one against Maine last season. Young is now second on the team in rebounds (54) and is averaging 9.7 rebounds per game since joining the starting lineup against Columbia.

Lucas Breaks OutAfter scoring just six points in the previos two games, senior Ricky Lucas broke out in the Seawolves victory over Darmouth on Sunday. The Herndon, Va. native scored a game-high 19 points and added eight boards.

Forcing TurnoversThe Seawolves forced Kentucky into 23 turnovers on Tuesday night, the most turnovers the Wildcats have had since, Feb. 15, 2006.

Beauford Scores 20Senior Mitchell Beauford scored a game-high 20 points against Kentucky, marking the fi rst time this season that a Seawolves player has reached the 20 point barrier.

Stingy DefenseThe Seawolves defense was suffocating in the fi rst half against UK, holding the Wildcats to just one fi eld goal over the fi rst 10:40. Kentucky did not take their fi rst lead until 7:20 remained in the fi rst half.

Neto Gets Starting CallSenior Emanuel Neto started for the fi rst time this season on Tuesday against the Kentucky after starting 20 of the 24 games he appeared in last year. Neto rewarded Pikiell’s faith in him, grabbing a a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to eight points in his 33 minutes of action.

Large CrowdThe attendance was offi cially listed as 19,269 in the Seawolves match-up with UK on Tuesday, the larg-est crowd the Seawolves have ever played in front of. The previous high was 15,876 when Stony Brook took on Maryland in the 2000-01 season.

Free Throw WoesThe Seawolves hurt themselves from the line on Tuesday at Rupp Arena, shooting just 11 for 20 includ-ing 9-for-15 in the second half.

Big Game TyreeJunior Michal Tyree went 3-for-4 from the three-point land in scoring 13 points against Kentucky. The junior college transfer also knocked three triples against Villanova when he scored a team-high 18 points. But he is shooting just 4-for-19 from long distance in the Seawolves four other contests, reach-ing double-fi gures just once.

Easy StreetStony Brook allowed Kentucky to shoot 48.1 percent from the fi eld, the fi fth opponent in the Seawolves six games that have shot over 40 percent. SBU meanwhile has broken the 40 percent barrier in just two contests.

Seawolves Sign Three In Fall Signing PeriodStony Brook University men’s basketball head coach Steve Pikiell announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play for the Seawolves beginning in the fall of 2008. Point guard Bryan Dougher (Scotch-Plains, N.J./Scotch-Plains Fanwood HS), guard Jonathan Moore (Cleveland, Ohio/Monroe CC) and forward Dallis Joyner (Norfolk, Va./Granby HS) will join the Seawolves basketball program.

Dougher averaged 19 points per game as a junior including 24 against the top-ranked high school team in the country, St. Patrick’s, in the Union County tournament. The 6-0 point guard hit over 50 threes last season and with 970 career points, is closing in on the school record of 1,425. Dougher was an all-conference and all-area selection last season in addition to being named second team All-Union County.

Moore, a 6-0 point guard, played for head coach Jerry Burns at Monroe Community College last season, leading the Tribunes to a 30-4 record and the NJCAA Division II national championship game. The Cleveland, Ohio native averaged 12 points per game as a freshman, hit the game-winning three-pointer against Cincinnati State in the national semifi nals and was a NJCAA Division II All-Tournament selection. Moore was also named a preseason First Team All-American this season and is averaging 14.5 points per game thus far through six games.

Joyner, a 6-7 forward, averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds per game for head coach Teran Matthews at Granby High School last season. The Norfolk, Va. native is also a two-time all-conference selection.

David vs. GoliathThe matchup with UK matches one of college’s basketball most storied pro-grams with one of its newest. Winners of seven national championships in their 105 years of basketball, UK leads the NCAA in All-Time wins (1,951), NCAA Tournaments (48) and NCAA Tournament wins (91). The Seawolves are in just their ninth season of Division I basketball, compiling 77 wins in that time.

Shaking It UpStony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell shook up his starting lineup on Saturday against Columbia. Sophomore Rio Pitt and junior Demetrius Young got their fi rst ever collegiate starts and junior Nick Carter broke into the starting fi ve for the fi rst time since the Seawolves second contest against Lafayette. Freshman Chris Martin and senior Ricky Lucas completed the Seawolves starting fi ve, giving Stony Brook three newcomers in the lineup and just one player, Lucas, that started a game for SBU last season,

Lucas Held In CheckThe Seawolves leading scorer Ricky Lucas was held down against Columbia, scoring just fi ve points on only fi ve shots in 15 minutes of action.

Struggling From The FieldStony Brook has struggled from the fi eld since the opener against Villanova when it shot 51.2 percent from the fi eld and knocked down nine three-pointers. Over their last four contests the Seawolves have shot just 33 percent (75-227) from the fl oor and just 14-for-69 (20.3 percent) from three.

Carter RespondsJunior Nick Carter responded on Saturday against Columbia after returning to the starting lineup for the fi rst time since the second game of season against Lafayette. Carter scored eight points in the fi rst half, including back-to-back threes on his way to a career-high 13 points.

Second Half BluesThe Seawolves have struggled coming out of the break so far this season. Stony Brook has been outscored by just 11 in the fi rst half, shooting almost 40 percent from the fi eld. But the second half has been a different story as the Seawolves have been outscored by 40, shot just 32 percent from the fi eld and let opponents shoot a robust 46.3 percent from the fi eld.

Pikiell - The Blueprint of a ChampionSteve Pikiell knows what it takes to win. A quick look at his accom-plishments as a players and coach. As a player:• three-time all-state player at St. Paul's HS in Bristol, Conn. Had number retired.• UConn's only two-time captain, he led his team to his alma mat-ers fi rst-ever National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title (1988), the "Elite Eight" (1989) and "Sweet Sixteen" (1990).As a coach:• At CCSU: During his tenure, the team posted a .563 winning per-centage (CCSU had never had a winning season prior to his arrival), and went on to capture the 2000 NEC title en route to setting a new conference record for wins in a season.• At GW: Colonials went from worst to fi rst during Pikiell's tenure, fi nishing in last place in 2001 before soaring to 18 wins and an NIT bid in 2004 and a 22-win campaign in 2004-05 on the way to their fi rst-ever Atlantic-10 title, a Top 25 national ranking a trip to the NCAA tournament

Steve Pikiell enters his third year at the helm of the Seawolves basketball program after being named the 10th coach in Stony Brook men's basketball history on April 13, 2005. Last season under Pikiell's direction the Seawolves more than doubled their win total from the previous season, going 9-20 including a stunning 59-51 road victory over Big Ten opponent Penn State. The Seawolves also doubled their conference victory total (four), picking up their fi rst confer-ence road victory since February 21, 2005 against UMBC. In his fi rst season at the helm of the Seawolves, Pikiell's squad went 4-24 and played the most challenging schedule in school history with games against UConn, George Washington, and Boston College. A constant re-cruiter, Pikiell wasted no time in bringing in the best recruiting class in pro-gram history. The class was recognized nationally when it was ranked the 27th best class in the country by Hoopscooponline.com. A Bristol, Conn. native, Pikiell received the ultimate honor of being inducted into his home-town Bristol Hall of Fame in the the fall of 2006. Pikiell came to Stony Brook with the reputation of being one of the rising stars in the collegiate coaching profession. Known as one of the top assistants for his understanding and ability to teach the game, Pikiell clearly demonstrated that he knew how to build a winner. In his two previous stops, Pikiell has been instrumental in seeing programs win conference champion-ships. Before arriving at Stony Brook, Pikiell helped orchestrate the rebirth of the George Washington basketball program under head coach Karl Hobbs. In 2004-05, the Colonials recorded 22 wins, the most since the 1997-98 sea-son and the second most in 50 years, en route to their fi rst-ever Atlantic-10 title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 14 conference victo-ries were the most in GW’s Atlantic-10 Conference history, signaling a com-plete turnaround for a team that fi nished last in the Atlantic-10 in 2001. The remarkable resurgence was punctuated with the Colonials appear-ance in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 national polls in 2004-05. At GW, Pikiell landed two Top 25 national recruiting classes and brought four Top 100 players to the program. Two of Pikiell’s recruits, Mike Hall and Pops Mensah-Bonsu, declared for the 2005 NBA draft.

Lucas Shines In HomecomingSenior Ricky Lucas had a terrifi c game on Sunday at American with many friends and family in the stands. The Herndon, Va. native scored 17 points, his second highest output of the season, including six of seven from the line.

There’s No Place Like New YorkThis will be the Seawolves fi rst matchup against a team from the state of New York. Last season Stony Brook went 3-5 in contests against New York teams, including the victory over Columbia.

Defensive For A HalfThe Seawolves held Maryland Eastern Shore to 25.9 percent (7-for-27) shooting in the fi rst half but the Hawks improved on that in the second half, hitting on 9 of 21 shots (42.9 percent).

To Foul Or Not To FoulStony Brook has been hurt thus far this season at the foul line. The Seawolves have shot 26 less free throws than their opponents and made 15 less, a product of having committed 77 fouls through three games con-tests, 15 more than the opposition. The disparity at the free throw line contributed to the Seawolves loss to UMES on Thursday night as the Hawks went 12-for-15 from the line in the second half.

Dialing Long DistanceThe Seawolves were once again unable to hit from long range on Thursday night, hitting just three of 11 shots from beyond the arc. Stony Brook is now shooting just 14-for-54 (25.9 %) from three this season.

Staying YoungDemetrius Young has been rock solid for the Seawolves so far this season especially on the back boards. The junior-college transfer ripped down seven boards on Monday night against Lafayette and then followed that up with nine rebounds in 29 minutes on Thursday night.

Patriot GamesThis will be second of Stony Brook’s three contests against Patriot League opponents this season. The Seawolves dropped their home opener to Lafayette on Monday night and will face off at Lehigh on December 5th. Stony Brook went 1-1 against the Patriot League last season, defeating Col-gate in their season opener and then falling to Navy in its home opener.

Beauford Surpasses 1,000 PointsBeauford scored 13 points on Monday night against Lafayette to become the 20th player in school history to surpass 1,000 points. The Queens, N.Y. native hit the fi rst of two free throws with 29 seconds left in regulation that gave the Seawolves a 58-57 lead at the time. Beauford is the second Stony Brook player in as many seasons to break the barrier. Mike Popoko broke it last season. Beauford now has 1,005 points, 17th in program history and needs just two points to surpass Joe Grandolfo for 16th place.

Hitting The BoardsThe Seawolves were dominant on the boards on Monday night, out-rebounding the Leopards 48-29 including 22-7 on the offensive glass. Emanuel Neto led the way, grabbing seven offensive boards and 13 overall. Demetrius Young and Ricky Lucas also helped out on the offensive glass, with four apiece.

Second Half WoesThrough two games the Seawolves have had trouble warming up after halftime. Stony Brook has been outscored just 62-59 in the fi rst half but has been outscored by a much larger margin, 100-73, after the break.

Hitting the TargetAfter struggling from the fi eld last season, the Seawolves have improved their shooting this season. Stony Brook is currently shooting 40.6 percent from the fi eld, second in the America East to Binghamton.

Taking Advantage Of The FreebiesThe Seawolves had an excellent night from the line against Lafayette after strugggling against Villanova. Stony Brook went 22-for-28 (78.6 %) includ-ing 15-for-17 in the second half and overtime.

Not Lending A Helping HandThe Seawolves have 19 assists and 33 turnovers through two games, putting them last in the conference in turnover/assist ratio (.58).

Blowing the WhistleStony Brook has been whistled for an incredible 56 fouls through two games and had three players foul out on Monday night against Lafayette.

Suffocating DefenseThe Seawolves defense was suffocating in the fi rst half against Lafayette on Monday, holding the Leopards without a fi eld goal for the fi rst 6:37 of the game. Lafayette shot 6-for-19 (31.6 %) from the fi eld in the fi rst stanza, including just 3-for-13 from three.

Frigid From ThreeStony Brook struggled from three on Monday after hitting 9 of 21 on Friday night against Villanova. The Seawolves went just 2-for-22 from beyond the arc including 0-for-5 in overtime.

The Microwave Junior college transfer Michael Tyree had an impressive debut for the Sea-wolves, notching a team-high 18 points in just 16 minutes of action. It is the second consecutive season a newcomer has led Stony Brook in points in the season-opener. Senior Ricky Lucas led the Seawolves with 20 points in last year’s season-opening victory over Colgate.

A Little Help From Your FriendsThe Seawolves got great production from their bench on Friday night against Villanova led by the 18 points from Tyree. Overall the Seawolves outscored the Wildcats bench 31-20.

20 and CountingStony Brook is still looking for its fi rst ever victory against a Big East school. The Seawolves are now 0-20 against Big East schools after Friday’s loss to Vil-lanova and 0-10 since joining Division I. Stony Brook came closest to a victory in the 2004-05 season, a 66-57 loss to St. John’s.

Crazy EightsTyree carried the Seawolves at one point in the fi rst half against the Wildcats scoring eight straight Stony Brook points. The junior knocked down three treys in all and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the line.

No FreebiesStony Brook began this season where it ended last season from the free-throw line, making just 13-21 from the charity stripe.

In a Foul MoodIn addition to struggling from the free-throw line the Seawolves where also whistled for an incredible 22 fouls against the Wildcats.

Trouble Cleaning the GlassThe Seawolves had trouble on the boards Friday night as the Wildcats had 35 rebounds to Stony Brook’s 19, including a 17-5 margin on the offensive glass.

Everyone InvolvedThe Seawolves used almost everyone on their bench on Friday night, as 12 of the 13 student-athletes that dressed saw the court with nine of them playing at least 14 minutes.

Steady EddieSophomore point guard Eddie Castellanos did not start the season-opener after getting the starting nod in 28 of 29 games last season but that did not stop him from playing 22 minutes (second on the team) and dishing out a team-best six assists the second most of his career.

Little TurnoverLast season the Seawolves had a habit of not only forcing turnovers but also coughing up the ball. But that was not the case on Friday, as the Seawolves had only 13 turnovers but forced just eight Villanova miscues

Road Warriors The Seawolves won fi ve games on the road last season after winning just one the previous year. The second came in stunning fashion, a 59-51 victory over Big Ten opponent Penn State.

New FacesThe Seawolves will welcome six newcomers this season. Nick Carter, Michael Tyree and Demetrius Young come from the junior college ranks. Chris Martin will play his fi rst season for Stony Brook after redshirting last year. Jemol Paul from Palm Beach, Fla. will be the Seawolves only true freshman and Desmond Adediji will sit out the 2007-08 season after transferring from Dayton.

Junior College TransfersThe Seawolves have three junior-college transfers on this year’s squad all with impressive resumes. Demetrius Young had his jersey retired at Yuba College after averaging 18 points and 11.1 rebounds per game last season on his way to earning Big Valley Conference MVP honors.

-Nick Carter, the son of the former New York Knick Reggie Carter, was named a fi rst-team JC All-American after averaging 17.8 points and 6.7 assists per game at nearby Suffolk Community College.

-Michael Tyree led Region VI and was six in the nation with 100 three-point fi eld goals and Seward CC last season.
