How much Power do Idle Disks Consume?

NB: These disk arrays do not have “spin-down” features.

Choosing Data Migration Criteria

➢Start simple and conservative➢Used “Accessed Time” if you can...

➢ But often you can't

Different Kinds of University User

●Group A is mainly administrative staff (993GB)●Group B is our Information Services directorate

(287GB)●Group C mainly consists of undergraduate

students (79GB)●Group D is a large research school (615GB)●Group E is a small cross-disciplinary research

group (31GB)

How much Energy can we Save?

Key Recommendations of Planet Filestore

➢Calculate what environmental and economic savings can be made by adopting an automated tiered storage approach.

➢ Calculations based on manufacturers’ stated figures are normally sufficient.

➢Disks should only be installed as required to minimise the amount of energy used by idle disks.

➢ Unless storage array has spin-down features.➢Consider whether appropriate similar technology

may be applicable for other applications.

case for adoption.➢ Industry default values – or customise with

your own➢ Available as a service on the UK Access
