Most companies have component stores so complicated, they fail to recognize the meaning of good housekeeping and rely on the stores staff to pick orders based on memory, more than numbers located via a picking sheet. When setting up store control for new 'large and small companies', all component numbers should be issued by the company drawing office, then as components are designed, a control number is allocated. This means, when a component is purchased from an outside supplier, a copy of a component drawing can be obtained from the drawing office and sent out to a supplier attached to a numbered order. It is important to simplify the number and lettering system so that additional components can be added progressively as the company develops. My basic starting point would be the company name plus a letter i.e. GFC.A1 - GFC.A2 - GFC.A3 - GFC.A4 and so on until component number GFC.A1000. The next sequence would be GFC.B1 - GFC.B2 - GFC.B3 - GFC.B4, until reaching GFC.Z1000 = 26,000 component numbers. To double the component numbers add letter A to the original sequence i.e. GFC.AA1 to GFC.AAZ1000. For a total of 78,000 components, the last number would be GFC.AAAZ1000. However, before numbering components, the storage racks need to be identified by a number and letters A to Z. Starting with: 1A -1B -1C - 1D - 1E, up to 1Z then 2A - 2B - 2C - 2D then 3A - 3B - 3C - 3D until you get to rack 1000Z. This means, there would be 26,000 potential racks. Companies regardless of size could all use the same numbering system, providing they add their company name at the start of a every component number. Ordering from various suppliers, a Ltd company registered number could also be included to identify a component i.e. 3596739GFC.AAAZ1000. Each component category would be identified by a shortened component name at the end of every component number i.e. GFC.AAAZ1000. Diode. <><><><><><><><>

Stores Control:

When setting up a store for small components for the first time, it is important to simplifythe number and lettering system so that additional components can be addedprogressively as the company develops. Most companies have component stores socomplicated, they fail to recognize the meaning of good housekeeping and rely on thestores staff to pick orders based on memory, more than numbers located via a pickingsheet.

When setting up store control for new 'large and small companies', all componentnumbers should be issued by the company drawing office, then as components aredesigned, a control number is allocated. This means, when a component is purchasedfrom an outside supplier, a copy of a component drawing can be obtained from thedrawing office and sent out to a supplier attached to a numbered order. It is important tosimplify the number and lettering system so that additional components can be addedprogressively as the company develops.

My basic starting point would be the company name plus a letter i.e. GFC.A1 - GFC.A2 -GFC.A3 - GFC.A4 and so on until component number GFC.A1000. The next sequencewould be GFC.B1 - GFC.B2 - GFC.B3 - GFC.B4, until reaching GFC.Z1000 = 26,000component numbers. To double the component numbers add letter A to the originalsequence i.e. GFC.AA1 to GFC.AAZ1000. For a total of 78,000 components, the lastnumber would be GFC.AAAZ1000.

However, before numbering components, the storage racks need to be identified by anumber and letters A to Z. Starting with: 1A -1B -1C - 1D - 1E, up to 1Z then 2A - 2B -2C - 2D then 3A - 3B - 3C - 3D until you get to rack 1000Z. This means, there would be26,000 potential racks. Companies regardless of size could all use the same numberingsystem, providing they add their company name at the start of a every component number.

Ordering from various suppliers, a Ltd company registered number could also be includedto identify a component i.e. 3596739GFC.AAAZ1000. Each component category wouldbe identified by a shortened component name at the end of every component number i.e.GFC.AAAZ1000. Diode.
