A number of products are available that can be used to seal embroidered areas:1. Embroidery backings, like Soft and Dry Wet Patches, or embroidery tapes are very easy to

use. Simply place the patch/tape over the back of the embroidery, and apply pressure and heat at the same time. the heat will melt the sealant, which will then coat the threads and seep between the threads and into the pierced needle holes.

2. Silicone products available from outdoor stores will also work. these tend to come as either aerosols, in tubes, or in small bottles with an applicator brush. By applying the silicone to the back of the embroidery not only do the threads get coated, but the spaces in between get filled as well. Please Note: any shop that provides heat-seal transfer services should avoid using aerosol silicone products as it is also a lubricant and air-borne silicone can interfere with heat-transfers.

3. Wax products, such as Nikwax are also available from outdoor stores. Nikwax bonds to the fibers of the embroidery, but does not fill in the spaces between the threads. thus some of breathability is maintained.

All H2X & H2Xtreme garments have waterproof and breathability ratings. 15,000 mm waterproof means that if that fabric were bonded underneath a tube that was 15 meters tall, the tube could be filled with water and it would take 24 hours before any would begin to soak through the fabric. Alternatively, the breathability rating measures how much water vapour could move through the fabric over 24 hours if the water was boiled and then collected as it condensated.

A permenant coating that is applied to the underside of the garment, providing a minimum of 1000 mm of waterproofness and breathability.

H2Xtreme®A polyurethane based membrane that is bonded to the underside of the outshell, providing a minimum of 5000 mm of waterproofness and also 3000 g/m2/24hr breathability.

Teflon is a water repellent application applied to the surface of a garment that causes water to bead up and roll off the surface of the garment. Also helps prevent against stains from spills.

H2X® and H2Xtreme® ratings refer only to the outshell fabrication of the garment. If the seams of a garment are not sealed then over time moisture can seap in, especially as the garment is used more.

The STORMTECH Durable Water Resistant (D/W/R) barrier is a light version of our H2X coating. It provides permanent protection of up to 600 mm and offers excellent breathability.

3-LAYER GARMENTSThe most technical (and expensive) collection of shells that we offer is the 3 Layer Bonded Collection. These garments have had the three layers mentioned above bonded together under high heat and pressure to form a single piece of technical fabric. This achieves a lighter, less bulky garment. Three layer bonded garments can include both hardshells and softshells.

2-LAYER GARMENTSGarments that are 2 Layer do not have a liner. They simply have the outshell bonded with a waterproof/breathable membrane underneith. These very lightweight shells are ideal for people who want to constantly wear different base layers with their jacket, or pack it up into a tiny bundle to conserve space.

2 ½ LAYER GARMENTSShells that are 2.5 Layer are simply a 2 Layer shell with a liner stitched in. Because the liner is not bonded in (as with 3 Layer jackets) the garment is more bulky and slightly heavier. However, this design also allows for a cushion of air to circulate between one’s body and the jacket, which provides some added warmth.

Down: Down is more fluffy than regular feathers, which allows it to trap air and provide excellent insulation; in fact, down is the warmest, lightest insulation (and most expensive) available. It also wicks moisture and is highly compressible and lightweight.

Feathers: Feathers are not as warm as down - but when mixed with down they help prevent clumping. Mixing feathers in with down also reduces the cost of a garment.

Polyfill: This is a synthetic insulation that provides warmth at a much lower price than down. It is more bulky and heavy than down, but it has some benefits over the natural alternative.

Unlike down which wicks moisture but is slow to dry, polyfill is water resistant and dries very quickly, so even when it does get wet it can still provide insulation. Polyfill also provides an excellent alternative to those with allergies to down or feathers.

The VPX-4 outshell is a 2.5 Layer Hardshell - so it has a durable, anti-abrasive outershell with a waterproof/breathable membrane bonded underneath - and then a mesh liner stitched in to promote air circulation. perforMance fleecefleece provides excellent insulation but weighs a fraction of more expensive alternatives such as wool. in fact, even when wet fleece retains much of its insulative properties. this combined with the fact that it is extremely breathable makes it perfect for activewear. fleece is machine washable and if hung up dries very quickly (it should not be put in a dryer unless on tumble setting with no heat). for those that are allergic to wool fleece also provides an excellent option.

fleece is a knitted fabric - which means that it is constructed of a series of looped yarns. over time these loops break down due to wear and washing. this causes a loop to break and form two single strands. these strands are what are eventually worn down and curled up to form pills on a fleece. pilling makes a fleece look tired and old - so we try to prevent that.

anti-Pill Fleece: some companies will prevent pilling in the short term only - by laminating the fleece fabric with a coating that protects the loops. over time however this coating washes/wears off, and leaves the fleece exposed.

storMtecH does not laminate its fleece. instead we take the fleece fabric directly from the mill, roll it out, and then comb the loops all up to the surface so that they are exposed. then we trim the tops of the loops to cut down the strands and minimize how much pilling could ever possibly occur on the garment. some fleeces are trimmed shorter (ie/ bwJ-3) and some are trimmed longer (ie/ sX-2).

micro Fleece refers to the thickness of the yarn that is used to knit the fleece. in fact - not only are the yarns finer, but they are more closely compacted together. the result is a tighter fabric that has less space between the knit of the fabric. less space means less heat loss so the microfleece is warmer than regular fleece. finer yarn means that the fleece feels softer and smoother (also has a smoother, finer appearance).

Bonded microfleece refers to two pieces of microfleece that have been bonded together - resulting in a new peice of fabric that is very dense and warm, yet quite light.

recycled Fleece refers to fleece fabric that has been partially developed from recycled plastic bottles (ie. water, soda pop, etc). this fleece has the same look and feel of our regular anti-pill fleece, but is made of 30% recycled content.

Polar Fleece refers to our heaviest fleece garments - which are any of those that are at least 300 g/m2. it is distinctive because it is so thick and fluffy.

meryl® actisystem Fleece refers to a patented fleece fabric specifically designed to provide maximum wicking properties - thereby making it an excellent alternative for either a base layer or a mid layer.
