Title A Diagnosis of Death

Author Ambroce Bierce

Characters Hawver : Logical, StubbornDr. Frayley : WiseDoctor Mannering : Eccentric, unsociable person

Theme Horror (feeling of knowing what will happen/Dejavu)

Conflict/Problem

Hawver discovered the Dr. Mannering’s theory but he did not believe it. Then, when he met a figure which had already dead and the figure talked to him, he started to be afraid but he kept being stubborn by not believing in it.

Solution/Ending The day after Hawver experienced meeting the figure, he passed away in his room.

Useful Vocabulary :Superstitious (adj): Having or showing believe in superstitionAccusation (n): A charge or claim that someone had done something illegal or wrongConviction (n): A firmly hard belief or opinionExpound (v): Explain in detail and systematicallyA recluse (n): A person who avoids others and lives a solitary life

Comments :

The story ended tragically because Mr. Hawver passed away soon after he met the suspicious figure. By the death of Hawver I think what the Dr. Mannering said in his book is once again proved. Moreover, The moral list is that we may not underestimate the existence of something unless we are going to be like mr. Hawver.STORY#2 Student’s Name: Asfarinah HidayahDate of reading: February 9, 2011 Type of story: Short story (11 Pages)

to happenInhabitant (n): A person or animal that lives in a place permanentlyAgony (n) : Great pain or suffering

Comments :I think those things could happen in a real life but not scary as the

story. It is called “dejavu’ or having known that something will happen, usually the bad one. And here, this story actually Jim had also felt something wrong about Morgan, yet he kept working and ignored his feeling.

Useful Vocabulary :Censorious (Adj): very criticalLenient (Adj): not as strict as expected when punishing somebody

Comments :

I think Mr. Creedy has to be wiser towards something which happened to him. He should not report it to the people, perhaps he just needed to report that to her wife since the people might think that he was crazy or insane for receiving a jug of syrup from dead person. Since, the people have their opinion about what just happened, therefore Mr. Creedy had to be careful.

Comments :

Reading this novel, I found that the story was not that good because I

hate a sad ending. In the story, the Character who should die was actually

Dave only not both Dave and Anna because he was the source of the thing

happened. I think Anna’s death was also Dave who made it. He put some

spell to Anna so that she died tragically. I think, the Dave character here is

very childish and emotionless. When Anna, the girl whom loved by Dave,

ignore him he did not accept that wisely. Even so, he killed her.

Just give it for about 75 percents because we have to realize that we will not be able to be with him or her forever. There must be a time for us to be separated from them. The

I am not really sad knowing that Evylyn finally died in the story. The

reason is just because Evlyn is not a loyal wife for Harold. However, she is a

she cared her daughter very much. This moral list from the story that I can

conclude is that every bad thing we do will also result the bad effect towards

At first before knowing the meaning of concentration camp I did not really feel bad when I read that some of the jewish people were brought there. However, after knowing the meaning I felt so terrible. I could not imagine How the people there were treated. This novel provides the reader a very good moral value that we are as a human must be able to respect each other. In this world there are many tribes and races, not only the german people, the English people, or the american people. There are also Jewish, the black people community or “Negro”, and many others. The diversity which appears in this world should be treated as a gift for us tyo respect others and protect others. Besides, we only have one world and one earth therefore we have to share.
