An external wall insulation system can only be applied if the substrate satisfies certain criteria and is tested for its load-bearing capacity. In the case of soiled, absorbent or uneven substrates, pre-treatment is always necessary; in the case of non-load bearing substrates, the system must be applied with a mechanical fixing system.

Primers are always applied diluted to suit the substrate. Primers must not remain glossy after drying.

After successful substrate preparation, the next important step is to choose the right adhesive for the selected system. Depending on the system and the substrate, additional dowelling of the insulation boards may be required.During mechanical fixing (rail fixing or fixing with Sto-Rotofix plus), substrate preparation can be eliminated, although it is essential in this case to ensure that the masonry is dry.

Fixing systems Insulation board fixing (EPS)

Bonding

Load-bearing substrate, suitable for bonding, with an unevenness of up to 1 cm/m

In the case of load-bearing substrates suitable for bonding (≥ 0.08 N/mm2), it is sufficient to bond the insulation board with a minimum bonded proportion of 40%.

Bonding and dowelling

Substrate suitable for bonding with insufficient load-bearing capacity and/or an unevenness of up to 2 cm/m

In the case of substrates with an insuf-ficient load-bearing capacity (< 0.08 N/mm2), additional dowelling with approved dowels is required.

Mechanical fixing

M system (centre image): Substrate suitable for bonding with an unevenness of up to 3 cm/m and/or substrates not suitable for bonding

Sto-Rotofix plus: Substrate suitable for bonding with an unevenness of up to 7 cm/m and/or substrates not suitable for bonding

In the case of substrates with an uneven-ness between 2 and 7 cm/m, a mechanical fixing system must be used. Alternatively, the substrate may be replaced or steined or the render and/or paint coat may be removed by mechanical means. The mechanical fixing systems are also used for substrates with an insufficient load-bearing capacity (< 0.08 N/mm²).

Bonding insulant/bonding and dowelling

Bonding the insulation boards Excessive drying times of the bonding mortar on the insulation board or wall lead to the formation of a skin on the bonding mortar which can lead to adhesion problems. Immediately after application of the bonding mortar (after 10 minutes at the latest), press the insulation boards onto the adhesive, have them float into place and press-fit them. Depending on the weathering, this time interval may be shorter.Install the insulation boards from bottom to top, in an offset pattern and so that they abut, leaving no open joints between the insulation boards. Unavoidable joints must be sealed with a suitable filler foam.Use insulant strips to seal joints with a width greater than 5 mm.There must be no base coat mortar in joints or between board joints. Damaged insulation boards must not be installed. Scatter offcuts (minimum width 15 cm) across the surface (not at the outer edges of a building or building apertures).Seal the gap between the starter track and the wall using a suitable filler foam.

InsulantSto-Polystyrene Rigid Foam Boards are delivered cut to precise angles, with straight edges and dimensionally accurate and are available with straight or over-lapped edges and as a groove and tongue construction set.

Protect the polystyrene rigid foam boards against the action of heat, UV radiation, moisture and mechanical damage (do not use moist, wet or damaged insulation boards). Due to the silver/grey colour shade of the insulation board (thermal conductivity group 032), measures for preventing thermal heating should be considered. The insulant should therefore be protected against direct solar radiation, e.g. by means of scaffold netting, during and after application. Further coatings should be applied within a few days.

Important

Sto-Starter ProfilesAfter establishing the height of the plinth, the Sto-Starter Profiles are mounted torsion-free, vertically and flush (see application details). Seal the gap between the Sto-Starter Profiles and the wall using a suitable filler foam.

Insulation board fixing (EPS)

Full-surface bondingIn the case of smooth substrates, apply the bonding mortar to the entire surface of the insulation board and tooth with a toothed trowel (15 x 15 mm). When doing so, do not hold the toothed trowel too flat. Use an emery board for board fixation.

Bonding

1a

Preventing thermal bridges: Thoroughly remove bonding mortar between board joints or joints immediately.

Tip

After pressing the board onto the bonding mortar, it is important to ensure that the board adheres evenly to the substrate.

Spot/edge bondingIn the case of uneven substrates up to 1 cm/m, apply a line of adhesive all around the edge of the boarding and 6 adhesive fixing dabs on the surface.

1b After pressing the board onto the adhesive, the bonded proportion must be at least 40% on both the substrate and the insulation board.

Machine application of bonding mortar to the insulation boardIn the case of even and uneven substrates up to 1 cm/m, apply an all-round line of adhesive with an enclosed W or M.

After pressing the board onto the adhesive, the bonded proportion must be at least 40% on both the substrate and the insulation board.

Insulation board fixing (EPS)

Additional dowelling

Substrate:In the case of substrates with an insufficient load-bearing capacity, the insulation boards must be dowelled as well as bonded. Please note: Only use dowels with the appropriate approval! Depending on wind loads, building height, location, etc., additional dowelling may also be necessary for load-bearing substrates. The relevant European and/or national specifications must be observed.

Anchorage depth:The dowel must be anchored in the load-bearing substrate at the depth required by the relevant dowel approval. Tiles and old render are not classed as suitable anchorage substrates.

Pull-out tests:In the case of undefined substrates, the pull-out strength must be determined by taking measurements on the object.

Dowel specifications:The dowel length depends on the existing wall structure and the insulant thickness. The number of dowels depends on the height and location (surface, edge). Dowelling is usually located beneath the reinforcing coat or the reinforcing mesh. Ensure an even dowelling pattern.

Bonding

Machine application of bonding mortar to the wall In the case of smooth substrates, apply an adhesive bead in sinuous lines with a max. spacing of 10 cm to the wall.

After pressing the board onto the adhesive, the bonded proportion must be at least 60% on both the substrate and the insulation board.

Laying of the insulation boardsLay insulation boards from bottom to top, tight-butted in a bond and offset to the building corners. Press the boards firmly onto the wall. Remove any excess adhe-sive in order to prevent thermal bridges.

In the case of bonding with Sto-Turbofix, the laid insulation boards must again be pressed onto the wall and re-adjusted after max. 10 minutes using a long spirit level.

Sto-TurbofixBonding with a PU foam for polystyrene rigid foam boards not only saves time. It also simplifies construction site logistics considerably. This is because a 10.4 kg bottle of Sto-Turbofix is equivalent to 14 sacks of bonding mortar. Further information can be found in the Sto-Turbofix application guideline.

Drill the required drill holes into the wall. When doing so, observe the corresponding information in the Technical Data Sheet and the approvals.

Note: Prior to this, the insulation boards must be bonded as described on page 11 onwards. Please adhere to the specified drying times.

Adjust the stop on the setting tool in accordance with the insulant thickness.

Insert the dowel into the drill hole until the dowel plate is flush with the insulation board.

Press the dowel gently against the insulant using the setting tool. Screw in the dowel by applying even pressure until the stop is flush with the surface of the insulant.

Seal the small hole in the surface of the insulant using the Sto-Ecotwist VE closing element or the Sto-Pistol Foam SE. Then create a smooth surface using a cutting knife and an emery board.

Grind until even using an emery board. This results in a closed, level insulation layer that prevents the appearance of dowel markings on the facade.

Insert the Sto-Thermo Dowel Cap EPS into the dowel plate recess.

Insert the dowel.Screw in the dowel screw using a suitable screwdriver and corresponding installation tool. End the setting procedure as soon as the stop washer touches the surface of the insulant. There is no unpleasant milling dust as the insulation material is compressed.

d = insulant thickness

x ≥ d, but at least 10 cm

y ≥ d, ideally: half the board height, but at least 10 cm

Full-surface bonding of the second insulation layer.

Two-layer installation

In the case of the insulant thicknesses (> 20 cm) used in low-energy construction and passive houses, for example, two-layer installation of the insulation boards is recommended. The second layer of insulant is to be applied sufficiently offset against the first layer both vertically and in terms of the joints (no continuous joints).

The installation of two-layer insulation boards allows details to be produced more easily and free of thermal bridges (e.g. in the case of window connections).

It is generally recommended that you force-fit the corner toothing using a suitable installation adhesive (e.g. Sto-Turbofix).

Cut off any excess adhesive.

When installing the second insulation layer, the floating-buttering method is recommended due to the low absorption capacity of the substrate (EPS).

Important

1

2

3

If mechanical fixing is required (by a standard), shorter and therefore cheaper dowels can be used for two-layer bonding. This eliminates local thermal bridges and the risk of marks being left by the dowels.

Push the connecting tracks between the insulation boards. The connecting tracks are used to stabilise the insulation boards and create an even surface. Then align the insulation boards again.

5

Push the insulation board into the starter track. Install it next to the previous board so that they tight-but. Depending on wind loads, building height, location, etc., additional dowelling may be necessary. The relevant European and/or national specifications must be observed.

Align the insulation boards.

3

4

After installing a row of boards, press the intermediate track firmly into the top groove and insert dowels. Compensate for any unevenness using packing shims. Then continue to install the insulation boards row by row as described in Step 2 onwards. It is important to ensure that there is a sufficient offset between the board joints.

When cutting to size, a groove for the intermediate or connecting track is then cut in using the grooving tool.

6

7

• In the case of substrates suitable for bonding with an insufficient load-bearing capacity, the insulation can be applied using a rail system. This is particularly useful if substrate preparation is especially complex (e.g. if the old render has to be knocked off).

• With StoTherm Classic® and StoTherm Vario, the Sto-Polystyrene Rigid Foam Boards, M system type, must be used. Additionally, the PVC tracks must be used for fixing.

• With StoTherm Mineral, the Sto-Mineral Fibre Board 040, M system type, must be used. Additionally, the aluminium tracks must be used for fixing.

Base coat

Preliminary works before base coat application in the case of EPS insulation boards

Unavoidable joints between the insulation boards must be sealed with Sto-Pistol Foam SE. After the filler foam has dried, smoothly cut off protruding foam.Use insulant strips to seal joints with a width greater than 5 mm.

1

Grind the insulation boards until smooth. The sanding dust must be removed from the facade.

2

Sto-Filler Foam Pistol Profi IWith the Sto-Filler Foam Pistol Profi I, the special taper allows the application of reducing needles that enable cavities or cracks as small as < 1 mm to be filled.

Product tip

• Due to the extraordinary elasticity of the StoLevell Classic base coat used with StoTherm Classic®, diagonal reinforcement is not required. The lightness value of the top coat, however, must be ≥ 20%.

• The window or door connection, which is resistant to driving rain, must be produced using Sto-Seal Beads and/or Sto-Joint Water-proofing Tape. When using Sto-Seal Beads, the mesh of the seal beads must first be embedded at the internal reveal sides in the base coat. See the “Window connection” section on page 37 onwards.

Notes

The internal reveal corners are reinforced with Sto-Glass Fibre Mesh. The mesh flanges must be at least 10 cm long.

Produce the external reveal corners using the Sto-Mesh Angle Bead Standard. Cut the mesh angle bead to size as appropriate, position it and embed it full-surface into the base coat. The mesh angle bead must overlap the internal corners of the mesh by at least 10 cm.

2

3

1 At the corners of window and door openings, diagonal reinforcement must be installed and embedded in the base coat before the base coat is applied. The dimensions are approx. 20 x 40 cm. The longitudinal edge must be set precisely to the corner point of the opening.

Note: Under the conditions listed above, diagonal reinforcement is not required with the StoTherm Classic® system.

Reinforcement of reveals

Base coat | 21The detailed technical specifications and information on the products contained in the Technical Data Sheets and approvals must be observed.

Prior to reinforcement, it is important to check carefully whether the insulation boards are tight-butted and honed even. A smooth insulant surface free of open joints prevents, amongst other things, cracks as well as joint marks on the top coat.

Note

Embed the Sto-Glass Fibre Mesh into the base coat across the entire wall (overlapping the opening).

4

Page 22: StoTherm systems Application guideline · 2015-11-20 · StoTherm Classic® Organic external wall insulation system of limited combustibility with polystyrene insulation Application

Reinforcement

Apply the base coat using the square trowel or by machine at a width of 110 to 120 cm across the entire surface.

1

Embed the mesh into the still moist base coat. The mesh strips must overlap by 10 cm. Then smooth the base coat using a wide trowel.

2

Sto-Glass Fibre MeshThe Sto-Glass Fibre Mesh is flexible and easy to apply. The mesh format, with a width of 1.10 m (in the case of horizontal mesh embedding), covers exactly one scaffolding platform with two mesh strips. Alternative: Sto-Shield Mesh AES for protection against electro-smog.

Product tip

Silo and machinery equipmentVarious system components can be delivered in the silo. A more efficient application can be achieved by using silo and machinery equipment.

Tip

22 | Base coat The detailed technical specifications and information on the products contained in the Technical Data Sheets and approvals must be observed.

Base coat

Cut off the mesh at an angle of 45° along the reveal edge. When cutting to size, the corners in particular must be clean and precise.

Important: Before applying the base coat, check all edges for mesh projections and cut them off if necessary.

5

6 Work the mesh into the base coat again around the area of the cutting edges.

Reinforcement of reveals

Sto-Lintel Corner Mesh AngleThe use of the Sto-Lintel Corner Mesh Angle for internal corner and reveal formation lowers labour costs as internal reveal corners do not need to be reinforced.

Product tip

• The specified drying times after bonding the insulation boards must be observed.

• Sufficient weather protection must be provided during the application and drying time of the base coat.

Finishing render

After the intermediate coating/base coat has dried through, the finishing render is applied wet in wet. The surfaces must be seamlessly coated.

After the base coat has dried through, apply the pigmented priming paint coat (Sto-Primer or StoPrep Miral) to the entire surface of the reinforcement using a roller.

1

2

• If a rilled render texture is not desired, the intermediate coating can be omitted when using StoTherm Classic®.

• Sufficient weather protection must be provided during the application and drying time of the intermediate coating and/or finishing render.

• The finishing renders can be tinted in up to 800 colour shades of the StoColor System.

Free-style textured render (MP)Fine-grained renders are applied and textured using a paint brush, spatula, mason’s trowel, sponge, etc..

Rilled render texture (R)Rilled renders can be textured in different ways following application (horizontal, vertical and round).

Stippled render texture (K)A stippled render is applied based on the grain size and textured with a suitable tool.

Lightness valueIn the case of external wall insulation systems, there are limit values for the lightness value of the top coat. The following limit values apply:• StoTherm Classic®: ≥ 15%• StoTherm Vario: ≥ 20%• StoTherm Mineral: ≥ 20%The lightness value is based on the percentaged quantity of light reflected by a surface (100% = white, 0% = black).

BondingComb the StoDeco Coll onto the substrate and rustications using the floating-buttering method. Press the rustications onto the wall across the entire surface. Full-surface bonding is achieved by moving the rustications gently back and forth.

After through-drying, remove any remaining adhesive from the butt joints.

Depending on the desired surface texture, prime with Sto-Primer (rough) or StoColor Maxicryl (smooth). The intermediate coating and top coats are applied with StoColor Maxicryl.

Create the butt joint through a broken edge using a V bevel or all-around edge formation, i.e. break the edges by means of light sanding.

StoDeco Profiles are easy to cut to size using the StoDeco Profile Hacksaw. Remove dust from the full surfaces of all cutting edges using a hand brush (and compressed air, if available).

Comb the StoDeco Coll onto the substrate and profile with the toothed trowel (6 x 6 mm) using the floating-buttering method. Adjust the toothing based on the unevenness of the substrate. The profile joints must also be bonded together across the full surface as described. The adhesive seam should be approx. 3 mm thick.Hold in place with lintel nails during initial drying. Remove any excess adhesive after initial drying.

Dowel window sills and larger profiles in accordance with the current system specifications. Fix the profile with an additional dowel approx. 20 cm from the end of the profile. The dowel must be recessed approx. 20 mm in the profile. Fit a foam cap to the dowel head, then fill and smooth the dowel punch hole with StoDeco Coll.Alternative: Fit a 5 mm thick StoDeco Cap. Grind until smooth.

Using a round jointer, form the material oozing out from below into a fillet. This prevents water from penetrating behind the profile.

The elements to be butted must be chamfered on-site.

In order to achieve a surface texture similar to sandstone, StoDeco Profiles are pre-coated with Sto-Primer and then twice top coated with StoColor Maxicryl. A smooth surface can be achieved with three coats of StoColor Maxicryl without primer.

When using StoSilt Glazed Brick Slips, always dowel through the reinforcing mesh. Fill and smooth the facade dowel before installing the glazed brick slips, then apply and tooth StoColl KM bonding mortar.

Note: When using the StoTherm Classic® system, the surface must be coated with StoPrep Contact before applying the bonding mortar.

Precise measuring of the surface is a prerequisite for optimum installation.

Sanded or grained surfaces are pointed using StoColl FM-K and a rounded jointer.

Slurry point smooth surfaces (smooth glazed brick slips and tiles) with StoColl FM-S.

Due to the high dead weight of the top coat, the facade insulation system must be dowelled through the mesh. Sto-Glass Fibre Mesh G should always be used as the reinforcing mesh. Building with unheated basement

Starter tracks made of aluminium have a high thermal conductivity. A plinth connection with the Sto-Starter Track Universal shown here should therefore only be used when the following conditions are satisfied:• The basement is unheated.• The cellar ceiling is insulated.• The facade insulation ends approx. 50 - 80 cm below the height of

the cellar ceiling.• The starter track is thermally separated from the wall structure by

means of packing shims or a thermal stop (e.g. Sto-Joint Sealing Tape Lento).

Apply and then smooth the base coat.

Embed the Sto-Armour Mesh in the base coat.

Tip: To ease application, it is recommend-able to cut the Sto-Armour Mesh to size early and put it down evenly.

Do not overlap the mesh but rather abut it.

Once the base coat has dried, apply the reinforcement as described on page 22. Lay the mesh strips and ensure a sufficient offset towards the joints of the Sto-Armour Mesh.

Note: On the surface with the Sto-Armour Mesh, a levelling filler coating with a width of approx. 30 cm must be applied to the transition to the rest of the facade surface due to the higher coating structure.

Installation of StoFentra Profi

Position the window sill, align it and fix it to the window frame using window sill screws.

Mark and attach StoFentra Window Sill Brackets with a spacing of approx. 60 cm to the underside of the window sill. Then fix with suitable dowels.

To seal the connection joint, apply the Sto-Window Sill Tape to the screw-on stem and guide it around the corner by approx. 5 cm.

2

3

1

Fill cavities with Sto-Pistol Foam SE below the window sill.

Note: Support the window sill when filling foam from underneath.

4

To waterproof the connection joints, bond Sto-Joint Sealing Tape Lento to the upstand profile and the underside of the window sill flush with the insulation boards.

5

The detailed technical specifications and information on the products contained in the Technical Data Sheets and approvals must be observed.

Do not bond the Sto-Joint Waterproofing Tape around the upstand profiles under tension, as it must still be able to expand once the cut insulation board has been positioned.

6

Measure the insulation board at the window sill upstand profile. The final surface of the window reveal must be flush with the inside of the upstand profile.

Once the insulation board adhesive has dried through, fill the cavity between the window sill and the insulation boards with Sto-Pistol Foam SE.

7

8

Wrong:The joint waterproofing tape is not compressed, which means that expansion is not possible.

Right: The joint waterproofing tape is compressed, which means that expansion is possible.

• Windows and doors must be fixed in accordance with the latest technology in order to prevent undue movement. The corresponding relevant guidelines (e.g. those provided by the German RAL Quality Assurance Association for Windows and Doors) must be observed.

• The substrate (e.g. window frame) must be level, dry, stable and free of substances which can adversely affect the adhesive bond (e.g. grease, dirt). Cleaning is advisable. An adhesive sample section should be produced. In the case of special (e.g. dirt-repellent) surface finishes, pre-treatment may be required (after consulting the door or window supplier).

• Only fix the seal beads immediately before installing the adjacent insulation boards.

• If the length of the connection is less than 2.30 m (or 2.40 m with Sto-Seal Bead Milano), apply the seal beads in one piece.

• If the length of the connection is longer, always use the profile in its original length at the bottom and cut to size at the top.

• In the corner area (window lintel), first place the vertical seal beads in their maximum length and then install the horizontal profile between the vertical profiles.

• Sto-Seal Beads may not be used for the connection of windows that are flush with the rendered facade or for window elements that protrude from the (finished) facade.

Measure the length of the first vertical seal bead and then mitre the seal bead.

Immediately before installing the facade insulation boards, attach joint waterproof-ing tape to the window frame.

Remove the protective film from the adhesive tape on the track and position the Sto-Seal Bead Supra on the upstand profile of the window sill. When using other seal beads, the joint between the upstand profile and the seal bead must first be sealed using joint waterproofing tape.Align the Sto-Seal Bead and attach firmly to the window frame.

Then insulate the facade and, if necessary, the reveal (in the case of windows/doors recessed in the masonry).

Adjust and fit the horizontal seal bead between the vertical tracks, then align and fix in place.

Note: Always install the vertical seal beads first. To cover the window, the necessary film can be fixed to the integrated self-adhesive tape of the Sto-Seal Beads.

After reinforcing the reveal (see the “Reinforcing reveals” section on page 21 onwards), separate the still moist base coat from the joint waterproofing tape using a struck joint. The finishing render is also separated from the joint water-proofing tape using a struck joint.

Additional information on application

StoTherm Mineral

The information up to page 46 also applies to the mineral external wall insulation system as far as possible. Any deviations are described on the following pages.

Note

Bonding

Insulation board fixing (MW)

Lamella insulation board made of mineral woolInsulation board made of mineral wool in accordance with EN 13162. High adhesive strength thanks to vertical fibres.

Sto-Mineral Fibre BoardInsulation boards made of mineral wool in accordance with EN 13162.

Bonding the insulation boardsImmediately after application of the bonding mortar (after 10 minutes at the latest), press, float into place and press-fit the insulation boards. Depending on the weathering, this time interval may be shorter. Excessive drying times of the bonding mortar on the insulation board or wall lead to the formation of a skin on the bonding mortar which can lead to adhesion problems.

The insulation boards must be precisely applied in a bond. There must be no open joints between the insulation boards. Unavoidable gaps must be sealed with equivalent insulants. In order to prevent thermal bridges, there must be no bonding mortar in joints or between the board joints. Damaged insula-tion boards must not be installed.

Full-surface bondingIn the case of smooth substrates, apply bonding mortar to the full surface of the insulation board. Toothing with a toothed trowel (15 x 15 mm). When doing so, do not hold the toothed trowel too flat. Use an emery board for board fixation.

After pressing the board onto the bonding mortar, it is important to ensure that the board adheres evenly to the substrate.

Bonding the mineral wool insulation board

Spot/edge bondingIn the case of uneven substrates up to 1 cm/m, apply a line of adhesive all around the edge of the boarding and - depending on the board format - three to six adhesive fixing dabs on the surface.

After pressing the board onto the adhesive, the bonded proportion must be at least 40% on both the substrate and the insulation board.

Additional dowelling

SubstratesThe Sto-Mineral Fibre Board must be dowelled. Dowels meeting the European Technical Approval must be used for this. The lamella insulation board can be additionally dowelled in the case of load-bearing substrates. In the event of an insufficient load-bearing capacity, the lamella insulation board must also be fixed using dowels that meet the European Technical Approval or national application guidelines.

Anchorage depthThe dowel must be anchored in the solid wall material at the depth required by the relevant dowel approval. Tiles and old render are not classed as suitable anchorage substrates.

Pull-out testIn the case of doubtful substrates, the pull-out strength has to be determined through measurements on the object.

Dowel specificationsThe dowel length depends on the existing wall structure and the insulant thickness. The number of dowels depends on the height and location (surface, edge). Dowelling is usually located beneath the reinforcing coat or the reinforcing mesh. Ensure an even dowelling pattern. Country-specific dowelling patterns must be taken into account.

Full-surface bondingIn the case of smooth substrates, apply bonding mortar to the full surface of the insulation board. Toothing with a toothed trowel (15 x 15 mm). When doing so, do not hold the toothed trowel too flat. Use an emery board for board fixation.

Alternative: In the case of uneven substrates up to 1 cm/m, use spot/edge bonding as described on page 48.

1a

After pressing the board onto the bonding mortar, it is important to ensure that the board adheres evenly to the substrate.

2a

Machine application of bonding mortar to the wallIn the case of smooth substrates, apply an adhesive bead in sinuous lines with a max. spacing of 10 cm to the wall.

1b

After pressure has been applied to the insulation board, it is important to ensure that the board is bonded evenly to the substrate.

2b

Laying of the insulation boardsLay insulation boards from bottom to top, tight-butted in the bond and offset to the building corners. Press the boards firmly onto the wall. Remove any excess adhesive in order to prevent thermal bridges.
