To the Stoughton Community, I proudly present to you the 2020 Spring & Summer Stoughton Recreation Program Guide. This edition includes the largest program output to date from our department. We are excited about our revamped Open Playground Program with new theme weeks and special events, along with new seasonal themed workshops and more family fun offerings this summer. This upcoming season brings a new chapter to the department with the addition of our new Program Facilitator Molly Reid. Molly comes to us with an abundance of recreation program experience as well as multiple years as a successful summer camp director. Molly has already made a splash in Stoughton taking over cooking classes, implementing new art programs and organizing community events - we are excited to have her! Our department has also recently made the move to a new location! After 30+ years in the basement of Town Hall, we are now located at 15 Pleasant Street in Stoughton. With this move, we will be able to continuously grow our programming with new and exciting classes and workshops for all ages in our community. We would like to thank the Stoughton community for the continued support and hope you will join us this Spring and Summer!

OPEN PLAYGROUND (Ages 6-14)

Stoughton Recreation’s Open Playground embraces and encourages the idea of free play in a supervised environment. The South School boasts a unique campus giving us access to basketball/street hockey courts, a large playground, field space, and a baseball diamond. Unlike most summer programs, Open Playground does not follow a strictly regimented day to day schedule. Our program offers an extensive selection of activities to participate in, including but not limited to, organized and free form sports games, arts and crafts instruction, special events, and on-site entertainers. We will also be offering field trips each week on a pay as you go basis (they are not included in the registration cost). All off-site field trips are underlined and not mandatory. Registration for each field trip is done at the start of each week. Open Playground is led by a group of highly skilled and trained staff in coordination with and under the supervision of the Stoughton Rec-reation Department. Every staff member receives training addressing all aspects and scenarios of our summer program. Open Playground ends at 2:30 pm each day. You can register separately for After Playground until 4:00 pm on a weekly basis or for the entire summer.

PRE-PLAYGROUND (Ages 4-5)

Pre-Playground is one of Stoughton Recreation’s most popular programs and takes place in two classrooms inside the South School, separate from the Open Playground program. Pre-Playground is a structured program with a strict 1:5 ra-tio, led by counselors that focus on creativity and the power of play. Our goal is to challenge and educate all children in the most beneficial way through arts and crafts, outdoor and indoor games, special events, and field trips. Pre-Playground is led by a group of highly skilled and trained staff in coordination with and under the supervision of the Stoughton Rec-reation Department. Every staff member receives training in addressing all aspects and scenarios of our summer program and how to handle difficult situations professionally. Children must pack a snack, lunch, and water bottle each day. Pre-Playground is completely nut-free. Children must be fully potty-trained in order to attend. There is no extended day for Pre-Playground.

STOUGHTON OUTER LIMITS TEEN PROGRAM (Entering grades 7-9)

We are excited to announce that the Stoughton Recreation Department is pioneering a new field trip program for teens entering grades 7-9 to meet the demand for more teen programming– Stoughton Outer Limits, or SOL for short! Teens will join us each day for a fun and exciting field trip selected just for them on Monday-Thursday all while learning a variety of leadership skills. On Fridays teens will use the skills they’ve learned to act as a Counselor-in-Training at the Open Playground and Pre-Playground programs. Teens can have fun all while gaining valuable skills to one day become a Playground counselor!

Ames Pond Swim Lessons

Stoughton Recreation offers swim lessons for children and adults beginning at the age of 3 years old. Led by our staff of highly trained lifeguards and water safety instructors, children and adults will learn basic strokes through dy-namic and informational practices while having fun. Lessons are 45 minutes for school-age children and adults, and 30 minutes for pre-school age. A parent or guardian must be present at the time of swim lessons. No child will be allowed to participate if a parent or guardian is not with them on the beach and following the Ames Pond policies and procedures. This is for your safety. Each swim lesson registration comes with a season pass to the Ames Pond Beachfront.
