Uncertainty!

Dear Family of God,

It would wonderful to know what the coming year held in store for us and our loved ones. Did we ever expect 2016 to end up as it has? Probably not. For many the closing year has held difficult times, losses we did not expect, failures we did not foresee.

As 21st century human beings we want things to stay the way we want them to be. We desire stability. We strive to insure safety and security for ourselves.

I was sharing with a friend how I lived through the 60s in Arizona. We did not read a national newspaper. I do not remember my parents watching the news much. We were in a “bubble”, set apart from the rest of the world. I do not remember any of my family talking about the presidents or what was going on in Washington, DC. We knew about the Vietnam war because our friends and relatives had loved ones fighting in that far off land. But we were not concerned with the rest of the world, not even the rest of Arizona. The adults in my life then were concerned about the price of copper and the running of the copper mine in Morenci.

Life seemed simpler then. But it was just as uncertain then as it is now. One of my cousins died in Vietnam. So did the young man who let us feed his horses from the fence and pet their long noses. A classmate of mine took his life and another, a year ahead of me, died from carbon monoxide poisoning. He was the biggest and fastest player on our football team, also a gentle soul.

So if living in a bubble did not make life any more certain and predictable then, why would I expect life to be any different today with instant news from around the world and instant “communication”?

What has changed for me from those days growing up in the White Mountains of east central Arizona is my faith. I believed in God then. I was afraid of making Him mad at me. Afraid of not being good enough. That just added more anxiety to my fragile mind and spirit.

“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.” I Corinthians 13:11-12

The “then” part of our lives Paul speaks of in his letter to the church in Corinth has not happened yet. But the faith I have now is grounded in a relationship I have with the Living God. Now I know that God loves me unconditionally, simply because I exist. I know that God is working out God’s purpose in my life and the lives of all his children.

Therein lies the certainly of my life today. The certainly of all our lives. 2017 is a book filled with blank pages. Together with God we will write on those pages the stories of our lives. May the words we record be those of love, hope, joy and faith. Even as we write about our losses and failures, may we posit them in light of our faith in God’s redeeming power, trusting in God’s promises of healing, reconciliation, peace and love.

Our foundation is an everlasting one, built on grace and mercy. This we know, this we believe, this we live. The old year is past, the new year awaits. We are certain that God will walk with us each and every day of 2017.

Happy New Year!! May God bless us and keep us today and always.!

In Christ’s love, Fr. Frank+

Ringing in the New Year with New Ideas Welcome – Grow – Serve

Find your place at St. Philip’s In 2017, the vestry will put into place a new organizational system called Welcome Serve Grow that will allow members to find a purpose that aligns with their personal interests and available time. For several years, St. Philip’s utilized a system called SWEEPS (Service, Worship, Education, Evangelism, Pastoral Care, Stewardship) to engage members in church activities, outreach, and service. While SWEEPS served us well, it is time for a change. Welcome Grow Serve seeks to simplify how we work to fulfill our mission. The new initiative focuses on three specific church areas:

• Welcoming old and new faces, encouraging participation, and demonstrating hospitality

• Growing our faith, understanding, and knowledge

• Serving the church, our members, and our community

Teams established in the three areas will concentrate on certain duties while also contributing to the overall mission of St. Philip’s. Chairs will be appointed to Welcome, Grow, and Serve, and on January 29, 2017, we will have sign-ups for church members to select where they would be most useful in serving St. Philip’s. Be thinking about your talents. Are you an encourager who loves engaging with people and organizing events? Then perhaps you would enjoy working with the Welcome group. Do you love teaching and guiding people in their spiritual search? Maybe you would be a fit for the Grow group. Are you a worker bee who likes addressing needs and accomplishing tasks and goals for the church and the community? Think about being on the Serve group. The hope is that this new program will encourage more participation so that the workload of our service is spread further in our congregation. !

HELP WANTED St. Philip’s Job Openings

Lectors/Eucharistic Ministers (EMs) We are looking to increase the corps of Lectors and EMs. Lectors are trained in reading lessons or other special parts of the liturgy. EMs are licensed by the bishop to administer the consecrated elements of the Eucharist and lead worship at certain liturgies. Training is provided. Please contact Carole Pryor. Crosslines Coordinator Crosslines in a non-profit organization that provides food, household items, clothes, and financial assistance to people in the Joplin area. The coordinator will be the liaison between St. Philip’s and Crosslines and will promote events like Souper Bowl Sunday, a collection for the Emergency Food Pantry. Contact Father Frank or Debi Sierra. Prayer Chain Coordinator St. Philip’s has a group who prays privately for individuals who don’t necessarily want their needs read aloud in public service. The coordinator gathers names of people in need of prayer, makes quarterly committee prayer assignments, and disseminates information to the committee members who pass along the information through a phone tree. Contact Maridan Kassab. Garden Committee Calling all green thumbs! Members needed to maintain the courtyard and landscaping around the church. Responsibilities include weeding, trimming, mulching, planting. Contact Tristan Wilkins. If you enjoy growing vegetables, Bob Larson needs your help this spring with the church garden. Contact Bob if you can lend a hand. Youth/EYC Coordinator The vestry’s attempt to hire a Youth Minister fell through this fall. We are still looking for a dedicated person to coordinate our youth ministry. Funding is available for this part-time position. Contact Fr. Frank if you are interested or know of someone who might serve in this position.

Transitional Housing Christmas Party

Dear Church Family,

Thank you for making our Transitional Housing Christmas party the BEST!

On December 9, St. Philip’s welcomed fifty people, 23 of whom were children. We enjoyed a delicious dinner of turkey, ham, and all the trimmings. The girls from Loving Grace made the mothers beautiful bead bracelets and our one dad a key chain. They also provided decorated reindeer cookies for the children. Marilyn Johnston and the girls blessed the party.

The best part of the evening was when Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by and the children received their gifts. The kids loved breaking the piñata and scrambling for candy.

A special thanks to Gayle & Phil O’Hare for heading up the kitchen crew and to everyone who provided financial support and prayers.

Candy/Cookie Sale

A winter storm didn’t keep parishoners away from St. Catherine’s annual Candy/Cookie sale on December 18. The guild raised $263 and received an additional $200 in donations to use for outreach. Thanks to all bakers and buyers!

At the 10:30 service on December 18, Julie Farmer led the choir in Lessons and Carols. This Anglican Christmas tradition dates back to the late 19th century and includes readings, beginning with Genesis and ending with the Gospel of Luke. Carol and hymns are sung between the readings.

The pictures above are perfect examples of things that could be posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Our followers could immediately see pictures of our activities, worship, and outreach.

Annual Parish Meeting

Members gathered for the Annual Meeting on December 4, 2016. Notable highlights of the meeting: Leadership: The newly elected members of the vestry are Robert Smith and Phil Metz. Both will serve three year terms on the vestry. Father Frank asked Gayle Tuck to retain her role as Senior Warden for another year. Jim Paul will continue to serve as Treasurer, and Sharrock Dermott will retain the position of Chancellor. Church Business: A new initiative called Welcome Grow Serve will be implemented in the new year to freshen our approach to ministry at St. Philip’s (see page 7 for more details). A by-law change was voted on and accepted that starting in 2018, the Parish Annual Meeting will be held the third Sunday in January. This new by-law dictates that the vestry shall establish a proposed budget by December 31 each year; this budget will be presented to members at the January meeting. Going forward, vestry members will serve terms from February – January. Financial: Jim Paul reported that for the first time in many years, St. Philip’s is operating in the black. Our endowment had a positive year. The stewardship campaign, led by Gail and Craig Campbell, was well received. The deficit reduction donation project was a success. One large expense is the installation of a new forced air HVAC units (5), paid for through the building fund and capital campaign. However, because of the increased efficiency the new units will provide, Jim expects to recover the money spent on this project in five years or so through decreased utility costs to the church. Recognitions: Father Frank and Gayle Tuck recognized the service of several people: Linda Englert and Judy Turner (treasurer’s assistants), Bob Larson and Gail Campbell (outgoing vestry members), Rose Paul (Crosslines coordinator), Nancy Messick (outgoing newsletter editor), and Tammie Hunt (outgoing prayer chain coordinator). Annual Parish Reports are available in the office. !

SOCIAL MEDIA (Robert Smith, Coordinator) Publishing a monthly newsletter is a good way for St. Philip’s to inform members of scheduled events, upcoming dates, and general information. The problem with a monthly publication is that is that it doesn’t always lend itself to covering immediate good news. Deadlines often prohibit coverage of special things that may be of interest to the congregation. But there’s a simple solution to this challenge: social media. St. Philip’s has a presence on Facebook and Instagram. Both mediums have a potential to reach members who attend faithfully AND friends whose faces we don’t see regularly.

We would like to encourage you to submit items to the newsletter editor – current events, special birthdays or anniversaries, feature articles, and fun pictures that relate to St. Philip’s and our members. The submissions may be posted on the St. Philip’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Not only will this ensure a continual presence on social media, it will also allow us to efficiently use our newsletter to highlight monthly information.
