Dear Readers,

This edition of the Newsletter has several fresh titles in it, newly received. A few of course are from our treasure trove : the Strand backlist !

A very very special title, “The Vanishing Kodavas”, is quite astonishing in its sheer scope and has amazing photographs. The author, Kaveri Ponnapa, is a friend of mine whose scholarship and commitment to excellence cannot be overrated. She seeks no publicity, and wants the book to speak for itself. Complete details of the work are given for your perusal on the opposite page. A significant portion of the money earned on the book will go to the Coorg Education Fund. Do consider this title for Corporate gifting or simply as an exceptional present for friends who’d value it. Meanwhile, a special announcement regarding our Bangalore shop. We are currently restructuring it, and so the shop will not be operational for sometime. tHE VaNISHING kOdaVaSBy kaveri PonnapaThe Vanishing Kodavas is a cultural study of the Kodava people. It tells their story, using official records, correspondence, colonial accounts, the recorded history of the rajahs of Kodagu, and the oral histories of the Kodava people themselves. The multiple voices create a rich and engrossing account of one of the most enigmatic people, who have fascinated generations of scholars, administrators and anthropologists.

Despite the violence and turbulence of their history that almost wiped out their population, the people managed to preserve their unique culture and way of life, and the rich oral tradition, through which customs, social norms, laws – their entire heritage - was passed down from generation to generation. The easy narrative style of the book makes it accessible to a wide readership, supported by almost 300 colour images, which is a rich record in itself. The author made repeated field trips over several years, following the most significant festivals and events over several cycles, and secured the permission of the community, before the photographs were taken. The book is an invaluable addition to every Kodava home as an insight into their extraordinary heritage. The serious research that has gone into the book also makes it an important reference work on a fast disappearing culture, and a base for further studies. Kaveri Ponnapa studied at Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi and then took a Master’s Degree in Social Anthropology with distinction at The School of Oriental and African Studies, London, where her M.A. dissertation was on aspects of Kodava culture. She has dedicated fifteen years to researching this book. Kaveri has been an independent writer for almost three decades.

tHE HIddEN lIFE OF WOlVESBy Jim and Jamie dutcher Delve into amazingly intimate wolf photography by Jim and Jamie Dutcher, a couple who spent many years living with a pack of wolves at the edge of Idaho’s Saw tooth Wilderness, observing

their complex social hierarchy. Here is the alpha pair, leaders of the pack, often the only couple that mate. Here are the pups, born with eyes shut in the spring, tousled by their mother through the first six weeks of life. Here is the omega wolf, lowest ranking wolf in the pack, whose subservience, often playful, alleviates pack tension. Here are moments of cooperation and moments of snarling dominance, moments of communication and affection. Here, too, are heartwarming moments of connection between the Dutchers and the wolves, caught in pictures that remind us how close the links are between wolves in the wild and the beloved family dog.List price Rs.1728.00 Hardback Our Price Rs.350.00215 pages Postage Rs.75.00 extra

FlaNIMalS POP-UPBy Ricky GervaisFrom the unique mind of comic master Ricky Gervais comes... 3-D Flanimals! The ghastly stars of a wildly popular book series are about to pop up everywhere. They’re grotesque. They’re absurd. They’re so ugly they’re cute - and they could only be spawned by the mind of award-winning comedian Ricky Gervais. From a planet far away, these bizarre and whimsical beasts -

from the ferocious airborne Bletchling to the badly behaved Grundit to the fatally timid Splunge - spring to life in the droll and off-the-cuff prose of a writer who some may liken to a latter-day Edward Lear. Then again, some may find these grossly amusing creatures simply-gross. And whose fault is that? MOONGIRlthe Collector’s Edition - Book and dVd Gift SetBy Henry Selick, Peter Chan, and Courtney BookerKindergarten-Grade 4–Based on the award-winning, animated short film of the same name, this picture book tells the story of Leon and his squirrel, Earl, on the night the moon goes dark. The boy and his pet are doing some night fishing on the bayou when they are whisked off by a

giant fish made of stars that sends them crashing into the darkened moon. There Leon and Earl must save Moongirl and the orb itself from the gargaloon, a monster that hates moonlight and tries to keep it dark. The large cartoon illustrations carry the exciting plot, giving energy and a fantastical mood to the text, but they provide merely a taste of the film’s artistic animation.
