Film Opening Analysis

Page 2: Stranger than fiction film opening analysis

Mise en scene:The first opening shot is a man in bed the mise en scene here is very simple and neat this shows the representation of the character and the mise en scene contrasts with him as being plain and simple.

Opening:In the opening we see his everyday life with a voice over this shows the audience the representation of him and the target audience will be seeing a representation of themselves. In the ending of the opening the voice over says that his watch will change everything, which leaves the audience with enigma of ‘what is going to happen?’

Sound:The sound through out the opening is the voice over of someone narrating his everyday life specifically. The sound helps the audience get an idea of who the character is. We have base drum music in the background of the voice over.

Narrative:The narrative in the opening is not established until the very end of the opening when the voice over says that his watch was about to change everything and this creates enigma for the audience of ‘what will it change?’ ‘what is going to happens next?’.

Setting and location:The setting in the opening is in his house of him getting ready and then the location changes three times from his house outside and his workplace at the office. These three location is where his life is based around everyday. The setting is first very neat and then when he gets into the office we see how busy it is also that its is a formal workplace which shows his occupation and his job status. The setting can relate to the audience who see representations of themselves.

Representation of the character:The representation of the character is established through out the opening as we are taken through out his every day life. The target audience would be able to relate to him as they are seeing the representation of themselves. We see his intelligence and his personality. His life seems boring with the same old routine and so specific.
