Resource Sections Learning Through Exploration Learning Through Stories and Rhymes Learning Through Activities Project Outcomes The Connections project serves as an excellent example of positive collaborative partnership working. The robust pilot phase of the project enabled the project team to evaluate and make appropriate adjustments to the resource, ensuring when it was launched in January 2015 it achieved its primary objective which was to: Create an innovative and imaginative resource designed to support staff in delivering purposeful, challenging and enjoyable learning experiences for pupils. Teachers Evaluation At the conclusion of the pilot project teachers were asked to complete a short evaluation questionnaire. This questionnaire recorded teachers experiences and the impact using the resource had on their confidence and delivery of physical education. Feedback from teachers was very positive with a number noting an increase in confidence whilst delivering physical education. Teachers Evaluation Evaluation comments from teachers included: The ease and simplicity of the cards, makes it an exceptional piece of work. The resource is teacher lead but allows children to explore, demonstrate their skills and learn from each other. The lesson cards provide clear instructions, learning intention, success criteria allows teachers to confidently deliver activity suited to the needs of the child. Resource allows delivery of quality learning experiences children respond enthusiastically and have demonstrated they transfer these skills to other learning. University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Project Research During the pilot project UWS carried out a series of data collection measures. Research Aim: To assess if participating in the resource lead to an improvement in the health status of the pupils, such as improving cardio respiratory fitness and sensory motor skills along with fundamental movement skills. A series of physiological and fitness measures were taken at the start and end of the pilot project. These measures examined whether pupils experienced health benefits whilst taking part in Connections Physical Education lessons University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Project Research Results Findings from the primary 1 cohort indicated that positive improvements were experienced in waist circumference, handgrip strength and cardio respiratory fitness. This is an important finding and suggests that the pilot intervention may indeed provide improvements to weight status, as well as enhancing key fundamental movement skills. The significant enhancements evidenced in cardio respiratory fitness are especially encouraging given its well established benefits upon health. Next Steps Continue to roll out in-service teacher training to ensure all South Lanarkshire primary school teachers are provided with the opportunity to receive appropriate training to allow them to confidentially deliver the resource. Extend the scope of the initial project research lead by the University of the West of Scotland to include additional South Lanarkshire Primary Schools. To continue to promote the resource to Local Authorities across Scotland. Questions?
