The Consortium

A serious lacuna of emerging development domains in India is the insufficient engagement by the academia in knowledge creation and field building activities. The increasing demand for qualified livelihood professionals in India by the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), civil society organisat ions and phi lanthropic foundations has created a context for knowledge co-creation by academicians and practitioners to meet this challenge.

A group of higher education institutions co l laborated to map human resource requirements of State Rural Livelihood Missions in 2011. Livelihoods MANTHAN emerged out of this felt need for strategic and need based support for livelihood promotion in India.

and is being expanded in its second year of

operation.

MANTHAN is also involved in building a livelihoods

knowledge compendium, conducting sharing

sessions on topics relevant for livelihoods

promot ion, organis ing wr i te-shops and

documenting livelihood cases, and creation &

dissemination of digital media.
