The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the University of Colorado Hospital was locked into under 50 acres. In 1997 the university was given over 200 acres at the Fitzsimons Army Medical base which was scheduled to be closed down. The move was completed in the early 2000s, but required demolition of an entire collection of old buildings and replaced with new facilities for research, clinical care, and education. The CU Denver campus was established in 1973

Background• Started my career in designing structural components

in nuclear power plants• Changed career path to higher education when they

stopped building nuclear plants• Started higher education in project design,

construction and codes• Moved to operations• Eventually merged operations and projects together,

along with other assignments• Take-away: be open to change, keep learning

Started my career burnt out on course work and tests – vowed not to continue on to an MBA or licensing as an engineer Worked for ITT-Grinnell and for United Engineers and Constructors as a structural engineer. Started an MBA while with Grinnell, but gave it up to take the job with UE at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station in NH. Started with the Univ. of CT in 1985 until 1989 when I moved to TX to become a facilities director of operations at Baylor College of Medicine. Left BCM to go to CU, for the last 20 years, and along the way realized that the MBA would be necessary for my professional development. Achieved my MBA in 2007.

We can talk about the path we took – I think we all took a little different route, which is good. My Chancellor, who is retiring, took this job nearly 5 years ago. He was previously Dean of the College of Business, and is a former governor of New Mexico on top of that. He’s also a friend and a golf partner, when he took the Chancellor’s job, he told me, “I sure wish I had paid more attention to how this place was run, I was Dean and didn’t think I’d even need to know some of this stuff.”

Most importantly, learn how the university works. Volunteer for search and strategic planning committees. Step up to the challenges. Make yourself known in a positive way. Offer suggestions and keep an open mind. Be open to change, because that is the only constant you will have.

I told our XC at CAPPA about this, and asked them; two Chief Facilities Officers and one future one, and all three said: university budget. You won’t get this by osmosis, and it will most likely take 2-3 years before you really understand it. In addition, having just completed the CFaR project, I can tell you that out of 83 respondents, many still don’t understand their budget. Everyone comes from somewhere though. If you’re an architect who came up through Planning and Construction – don’t send all your time working with the construction folks, that keeps you and them from learning. If you don’t know anything about budget, work with your budget officer.
