Insurance companies tend to be long-term investors who need to make long-term decisions. In practice it usually takes at least six months to a year before the impact of decisions can be seen on the insurance company’s balance sheet and maybe even longer before the consequences of the decisions can be evaluated.

By using the Insurance Manager simulation the course participants will get the opportunity to see how their strategic and tactical management choices will have an impact on the financial situation of ‘their’ company almost instantly. This will enhance the learning experience significantly.

Benefits of using a simulation and workshop agenda

Course objectivesThe 3-day course ‘Strategic Management of the Insurance Business’ is designed to provide the course participants with the latest insights on balance sheet management of insurance companies.

Throughout the course the participants will be using the unique Insurance Manager simulation software, developed by Oxyor, to apply their learning in practice. In the simulation, the participants – in small groups – will act as the Executive Board of a fictitious insurance company. The simulated time horizon will be a period of about 7 to 10 years (where one ‘round’, being six months in the simulation, is approximately one hour in real time). During the simulation each group will have to manage ‘their’ insurance company through different economic cycles, where the financial markets will changes and with them e.g. interest rates and insurance claim behaviour.

The participants of this course will gain an in-depth understanding of the most important factors influencing the balance sheet of an insurance company, as well as experience the influence of developments in the financial markets on the insurers’ balance sheet.

Robert has more than a decade of experience in the global financial markets. His areas of expertise are Financial Markets, Derivatives, Asset & Liability Management (ALM), Asset Management, Currencies, Interest Rates and Risk Management. After he completed his studies in Investment Theory at the Tilburg University, he started his career on the trading floor at ABN AMRO Amsterdam. He then went to work as a buy-side trader for APG Asset Management (who invest $450 bio globally for Dutch pension funds). In this role he was responsible for the currency trading book, ran a proprietary trading portfolio and traded derivatives on various assets. Before starting his career as a financial markets trainer, Robert worked on the trading floor at Goldman Sachs in London for over 5 years. At Goldman Sachs he was responsible for advising Dutch and German institutional clients (pension funds, insurance companies and banks) on strategic and tactical financial risk management issues. He was also responsible for client acquisition and relationship management in this region. The fact that Robert has worked both on the buy-side and the sell-side, gives him a unique insight in the dynamics on both sides of the markets.
