Raydon and District Gardening Club
40th Year
Daphne and I went for a lovely walk theother day, the rooks were making nestsand some were sitting on the nests highup in trees approximately 20 of them, asure indicator that Spring is on its way.Since last month everywhere around thecountryside snowdrops abound and whata lovely sight along with aconites &primroses, makes a pleasant change fromseeing all the litter thrown out or dumpedin our used to be beautiful countryside. Ialso noticed people are starting to dosomething in their gardens again & somehave even started to cut the grass whichhas hardly stopped growing due to themild winter so far. With our changingclimate it will certainly give all usgardeners a new challenge on how orwhen we do different jobs like when toprune, when to plant different seeds etcas the old guide lines seem to be notapplicable as much, oh the joy of being agardener.Hopefully our February meeting got off toa flying start with the subject “Orchids inthe wild” with guest speaker (new togarden club) Mrs Tina Loose who is verygood and I have known her for severalyears. Hopefully we had a goodattendance as many of our guest speakerscome some distance for us and theydeserve a good number of members, theyalso help us by passing on lots ofknowledge.March 26th and Chris Parfitt will be givingus a interesting evening of Cornwall andits gardens which should appeal toeverybody. Cornwall have some greatgardens but of course it’s a long distanceto travel, so most people perhaps can onlygo when in that part of the world on holidayor visiting friends and family.
Saturday 4th April will be our “Spring Show”once again and held in the village hall.Although we are marking our RubyAnniversary this year, the mainarrangements in this spring show will bemostly daffodils to celebrate St David’s Dayso yellow will be the major colour. Don’tforget to pick up our show schedules in goodtime as entries have to be booked inadvance of show day on Wednesday 1stApril latest. This helps us work out tablespacings and ensures every exhibit isdisplayed to its advantage. Late entries onthe day are only accepted if table spaceallows. Also in April on Thursday 23rd again invillage hall our evening meeting is with ChrisReeve who is senior gardener atHelmingham Hall, and he will talk through“A year of gardening“ at this quite famousgarden. We will be taking bookings for our annualsummer coach outing and hopefully willhave prices sorted, also the destination. We may also have a another outing (shorterdistance) to look forward to, however yourcommittee has still to confirm if this ispossible. As always your committee looks forward tomeeting all members and guests, plus newmembers at all meetings and shows. Enjoythe “SPRING” as it comes in with all thedifferent colours. Geoff Horrex.

The Benefice House Group(This is an ultra-short summary of the eight-week House Group course on Peter)
Peter: learning to be like Jesus
Peter faced a very steep learning curve frombeing found by Jesus to becoming theperson to establish the Christian Churchthroughout the world. His learning includedhaving to: Obey; Pray; Trust; Believe;Follow; Serve; Love; Persevere; Witness;Change and … never stop Learning.
He was a simple, Jewish fisherman and, withhis brother Andrew was the first to be calledto be a disciple of Jesus. In the lists of thenamed disciples cited three times in theGospels, Simon (or Simon Peter) is alwaysmentioned first.
When Jesus and Simon (Peter) first met,Jesus told him he would be thenceforth becalled Cephas (Aramaic for ‘rock’), or Peter(Greek for ‘rock’) (1). Eventually, Jesus notonly changed his name but his self-image,his prejudices, his expectations and hispriorities. However, Peter only fullyunderstood these changes well after Jesus’sdeath and resurrection, and probably onlywhen filled with the Holy Spirit (2). Peterillustrates God’s promise outlined in Paul’sletter to the Philippians (chapter 1, verse 6):“God, who began a good work in you, willcarry it on to completion until the day ofChrist Jesus”.
Peter was the leading spokesperson for andon behalf of all the disciples as he was theone always prepared to voice his, andothers’ thoughts (3,4,5). However, there isno evidence that in the early days of thedisciples’ work he had been given anyparticular authority do this. Peter wasimpulsive and often spoke or acted withoutthinking (6); he was confused, rash, fickleand weak and made promises that, underpressure, he did not keep (7); he challengedJesus and frequently got into trouble (8,9);
said he understood but in reality didn’t untilfilled with the Holy Spirit (2). In short, verymuch like us.
Importantly, Jesus never stopped loving andnever gave up on Peter, restoring him asthe future (the ‘rock’), on which the Christ’sChurch would be built (10,11).
Peter's journey is that of a typical disciple.Discipleship is never static but dynamic, until our physical death. We can and nevershould stop learning. All disciples shouldcontinually be challenged; ‘what moreshould – and can – I do?’ Jesus’ hopes anddesires following our repentance andacceptance of him move from the generalto the more specific. Our call to follow Jesusinvolves a deeper commitment, and, ifnecessary, a greater sacrifice; we should bethankful that in Suffolk, it is highly unlikelythis sacrifice will end in death. Discipleshipshould be an attitude as well as a journeyas we progressively follow and grow intoJesus. We, like Peter, are called to shareand explain the Gospel with others. Thisdoes not necessarily mean shouting it fromstrret corners, but in any way that bringsothers to Jesus and the love of God.
Although it may be tempting to use Peter asa ‘role model’ that would in some wayexplain or even excuse our own mistakes, this would be wrong, if only because weknow how he behaved. However, we doneed to learn from his mistakes and notreproduce them, because we will, inevitablyand perhaps even today, say or dosomething wrong, and sin. Turning thesituation around, we can also use the Jesus-Peter relationship as another valuablelearning experience, namely that, when weare faced with a Peter-like figure, we shouldtry and show them the grace, mercy, faith, trust and love that Jesus showed him ….andus.

KENNY’S SESAW NEWSWhat a scary day that was! I don’t knowwho Ciara is but she caused a dreadfulstorm in the garden. Mum was nearly blownover when she went out to check thekennels and stables. The dramatic weathermay be a distant memory now but ourvolunteers are still repairing the damage.
It’s been a rough year so far. Apart frombattling the elements, we lost dear old Peg,one of our Kune Kune pigs. She and herlifelong pal, Bob, arrived some years agoafter their owner died. Sadly Peg becameill recently and on the morning of herdemise, Bob laid by her side with his headacross her. As you may imagine, a fewtears were shed that day.
I also suffered a much smaller loss whenthe Vet removed three of my teeth. It can’tbe my fault, although every time Mum triedto clean them I bit her just to let her knowthey were still there. Perhaps I should havelet her clean them.
We have lots of bargains ready for our £1Sale on 14th March at Newton Green VillageHall, CO10 0QS. Don’t miss it, if only forthe delicious homemade cakes! Whichreminds me, it’s nearly dinner time! It’s socold, even the cats are staying in and takingover our dog beds. As the rain lashesagainst the window and the wind howlsdown the chimney, here ends this under theduvet report from me, Kenny (the Boss)Chihuahua.

The Quartet beneficeNewsletter and events schedule
Dear Friends.
Firstly may I on behalf of all the congregations in the Benefice pass on our bestwishes to Christine Cousins & Sarah her daughter on what will be a fantasticeffort (later this year) to help less fortunate people in Kenya. We take so muchfor granted here in the UK and perhaps do not fully understand the implicationsof not having fresh water to drink or proper sanitation. Seeing people on our TVsome only young, walking miles in a day to a water hole/river to fill up plasticcontainers with water that wild animals also use, the contents don`t bearthinking about and this is then taken home to drink !!!!!, all we do is turn on a tap. They are in need of all the help we can give so I urge you to support Christine`sfund raising effort if possible, such a worthy cause.
As the song said “These boots are made for walking” we also have a short trekof our own in April as it will be time for the Walk of Witness once again. Pleasejoin in the fun of walking mostly across country, bring a dog on a lead if you haveone, walking boots needed, then join in the short Church stops for the telling of“The Passion” – the story of Jesus, arrest & crucifixion is told.
Watch out in April copy for the confirmed route and timings. Donations please tocover cost for a Lent type lunch of soup, bread & cheese. The plan hopefully isstarting at Holton- Raydon (coffee)- Stratford (lunch)- finish Higham.
When you have had a stressful week or a difficult time as I have recently with afamily death to contend with I find just going into our wonderful Church for a fewminutes of quite prayer or just to sit in the peaceful surroundings is so rewarding. When you emerge from the building taking in the fresh air as you walk away youfeel a great weight has been lifted and your thoughts change from negative topositive. Now that’s got to be good for anybody.
As you read this page we will be in the period of “Lent” from February 27th toApril 11th. It’s our time as Christians for real reflection about our way of life, wecan bear in mind throughout this period of self-examination the love of our Godthat supports us through the darkest times and brings us out the other side withrenewed understanding.
May God bless you all in this time of Lent which of course leads us steadilytowards “EASTER TIME”.
