Editors Corner

The Quartet team like to get together earlyon in the year for an Annual GeneralMeeting and this year we managed it in lateFebruary. We use the meeting to reflect onhow things are going and to see if we cancome up with any good ideas to keep thingsfresh.

This year we have made two decisions! Thefirst is that in order to keep up with risingexpenses, we will have to raise the cost ofadvertising in April. This will bring the costof a quarter page advert for example, from£66 to £72 for the year. We feel this stillrepresents good value for money. If youwould like to know more about advertisingin the Quartet, just [email protected] and we willsend you details.

The other big decision involves you - afteran interesting discussion about how difficultit was to find a good takeaway round here,we would like to put together a useful list oflocal venues, particularly those that readersrecommend and that will deliver locally. Please can you let us know your favouritelocal takeaways and if they deliver? A oneor two word review would be great too andwe’ll compile all the replies to give everyonea good idea about what’s best around hereand how to contact them.

Before we go - checkout the new Voucheron Page 7 - a free cup of coffee awaits atPlace for Plants!

Happy reading.

Anne and Jane

Articles for the Quartet are included if wehave room, and if, in the opinion of theeditors, they are of general interest to ourreaders. Please remember all articles willbe subject to editing. We prefer you tocontact us via email where possible.

COMMUNITY FIRSTRESPONDERS.CFR’s are trained volunteers who aredispatched by the ambulance service to lifethreatening emergencies in localcommunities. The volunteers normally workwithin a radius of 8 minutes drive from theirlocation but depending on circumstancesthis could be further afield. They cannormally get to a casualty before anambulance can get there, assess thepatient and start possible life savingtreatment immediately. If the situationchanges the CFR can update AmbulanceControl to give them an updatedassessment of the patient.

The Local area is covered by a CFR baglocated in Langham ( the bag was suppliedby Stratford St Mary Parish Council) andalso other bags in Dedham, East Bergholt,Capel St Mary and Manningtree. The bagis presently used by only one volunteer inLangham.

A volunteer can be on call whenever theywant, if you are logged off duty, you do notget called.

At the moment the Stratford St Mary bag isnot utilised as much as it could be and Iwould like to improve this. Ideally I wouldlike some volunteers in the Langham,Stratford St Mary, Boxted and Dedhamareas to complete the training and then joinme in covering our area. The more hourswe have the bag active the better cover wehave for ourselves.

If you are interested in finding out moreabout becoming a CFR please contactme (Peter Dawson) on 07775 667753 andI can let you know more about it.

Ringing TributesOn Saturday 26th January 2019, a band of 6ringers from the Suffolk Guild of Ringerscame to St Mary’s Church to ring the churchbells in tribute to Charlie Ablitt who, as manylocal people will already know, played a majorpart in keeping bell ringing alive in Highamand Stratford St Mary for over forty years.

The band, consisting of Brian Whiting,Christine Knight, Neville Whittell, DavidStanford, Thomas Scase and Alan Mayle, rang a peal of 5040 changes incorporating 4minor methods (1 extent of Kent Treble Bob,2 extents of Oxford Treble Bob, 2 extents ofCambridge Surprise and 2 extents of Plain

RNIB Stamp Appeal

Well done everyone - a great effort! Our firstcarrier bag full of postage stamps has nowbeen sent off to the RNIB. Although it hasbeen quite a few decades(!) since Icollected stamps as a hobby, it was veryinteresting to note where all the foreignstamps had come from. I counted 27different countries including:Australia, Bermuda, Bulgaria, Canada,Croatia, Eire, Falkland Islands, Finland,France, Germany, Greece, Grenada,Guernsey, Hong Kong, India, Italy,Mauritius, The Netherlands, New Zealand,Papua New Guinea, Singapore, TheSolomon Islands, South Africa, Spain,Tanzania, USA, Zimbabwe. It is nice to think, in this age of email andpaperless post, that we are stillcommunicating across the world in a moretangible way. Please keep collecting your used postagestamps for the RNIB, supporting peoplewith sight loss. Collection boxes are locatedin the church and the parish room.

Sandy Ranson

Bob), taking 3 hours and eight minutes tocomplete the peal.

The band recorded the following tribute inthe belfry visitor’s book: In fond memoryof Charles H Ablitt, former Tower Captainand much loved tutor of many ringers. Some three weeks later, on the morningof Saturday 16th February, a band ofringers perhaps more closely associatedwith Charlie, rang a quarter peal (1260changes) of plain bob doubles at Higham, which took some 42 minutes.

The band (see picture below), was madeup of three members of the Ablitt Family,(daughter Sarah, son Peter and nieceLynn), two of Charlie’s trainee ringers(Brenda and Brian Such) with the pealbeing conducted by Richard Hobson whowas also taught to ring by Charlie. Incelebration of the life of our much-lovedTower Captain Charlie Ablitt, hisinstruction to always lead with open hand-stroke’ will not be forgotten.

Boards recording these tributes will beinstalled in the respective ringingchambers in the coming months.

New ringers are always welcome andanyone (of any age) who thinks they mightlike to follow in Charlie’s footsteps bygiving ringing a try, should call Martin Carr01206 337 325, Brenda or Brian Such01206 323 091. Practice sessions are heldon Friday evenings 7.30 to 9.00pm, atHigham and Stratford church towers(alternately).

Higham

The PCC are delighted to announce that StMary’s, Higham is now classified as an ‘ecochurch’ having recently gained a bronzeaward. This is a fine achievement bearingin mind the age of the church building. However, the PCC are not content with justbronze and would like to go for silver if notmore…To enable us to do that the PCC wonderedif there is somebody from Higham whomight be interested in taking on theresponsibility for managing this project. It isnot onerous, requiring about an hour amonth to keep a check on how the churchis doing and further changes we could maketo achieve our goal.If this is something you feel you have thetime for and know that it will make adifference for generations to come, pleasetalk to the Churchwardens or any memberof the PCC.

Raydon and District Gardening Club

39th Year

Springtime is just a few weeks away andearly signs are appearing with thesnowdrops & aconites now in full bloomalong with some early flowering shrubsand trees and even early crocus. At themoment as I pen these notes they are allbeing tossed around in the strong windand rain but at least not covered in snow.March means to me daffodils, mowing thelawns, pulling the rhubarb, more warmthin the sun, longer daylight hours to enableall the gardening jobs to get done, but stillallowing time to enjoy watching the birdsnesting and listening to the lovely birdsongwhile enjoying sometimes a cup of tea orcoffee. We have a summerhouse which isgreat as some of the month can be coldand windy of course so we can sit out inthe garden. I hope you all feel optimisticand looking forward to another successfulgardening year as all the wonderfulcolours and perfumes come back into ourlives. Most veggies of course take a bitlonger. It’s always a shame that the deadline ofthe Quartet is 19th of the month so alwaysunable to talk about the meeting until thefollowing month as our meetings are heldon the fourth Thursday each month, sohopefully February meeting was wellattended. On the 28th March our guest speaker willbe Ken Abel who will explain all there is toknow about growing “Pelargoniums”another interesting evening to look forwardto. The Eagles have Flown! After just over 42 years at St Clare, Ernestand Rachel Eagle have moved to Capel StMary to be nearer to their daughter Sarahand son Andrew. They left Sproughton inAugust 1976 and have been involved inmany aspects of Holton St Mary village life.

From All Saints, Sproughton to St Mary’sHolton Ernest was soon sidesman andthen on the PCC, later being ChurchWarden twice covering more than 20years. Rachel followed him onto the PCCand organised the cleaning rota right up totheir departure. Throughout their time herethey were both involved in the Social Cluband the Village Hall. Ernest was alwaysthere ready to give a helping hand towhatever was needed especially whenreplacing the Hall roof and also securingtwo very large donations towards its cost.

Ernest was also on the Parish Council andChairman for two stints during which timehe took on the Best Kept Village of theYear challenge with Sally Longmate andwon it for the Village in 2005. He was alsoheavily involved in establishing andinstalling the village sign and the firstflagpole on the Church tower.

Ernest was instrumental in agreeing thepurchase of the Town Pightle from theUnited Charities Trust to create theMillennium Green. He was a founderTrustee and helped to collate suggestionsfrom the villagers, plan it out, plant treesand hedges and erect the beacon. All thecomponent parts of the sun dial featurewere manufactured in his garage!

When it came to raising funds Ernest andRachel were always in the forefront. Majorevent days saw their garden turned overto an array of bygones brought in by theirfriends and of course his steam engines,Old NIck and LIttle Old Nick. They evenhad a small box attached to Old Nick fordonations in exchange for rides. They took

their thrashing drum, tractors and steamengines to charitable events all over thecountry raising funds for many charities.Even before Marjorie and I came to thevillage in 1979 Ernest and Rachel weresupporting us in our efforts to raise funds toestablish the Ipswich Transport Museum.

They supported every aspect of our village, they were truly ‘Village People’ and I ampleased to say they were given an Award in2002 by Babergh District Council for theiroutstanding work in the community.

We wish them well in their new home.

Toni Neobard & Kate Broad, familyhistorians and authors will present “ForBetter or Far Worse” on 13 March. Thiswill be a light-hearted look at marriage andrelationships through the eyes ofVictorians. What happened if they didn’tmarry and what if you did but were nothappy with your choice? It will be aglimpse at bizarre goings-on showingwedded bliss wasn’t always so !

On 10 April the popular speaker MarkMitchels will talk to us on “The Genius ofCharles Dickens”. Dickens rose tobecome a great novelist by sheer talentand determination. The Quartet beneficeNewsletter and events schedule

From the 4. St Mary`s Benefice.

All the PCC`s are working hard together to (a) find a new Priest on a permanent basis, and(b) to keep the Churches’ programme of services continuing along a similar pattern that youhave all become familiar with. We have in place already priests and those authorised to takeall Holy Communion services, or Morning Worship, up to August this year and are now sortingout the remainder. Evensong will be taken by our Elders, or Churchwardens as required. Weare very fortunate to have Nicola Tindall (Reader) who is assisting us during this period, alongwith the help of several Elders as well as the Churchwardens. If there are any problems thatneed resolving, please contact any of us (contact numbers on following page) as soon aspossible then it can be dealt with as we move forward, working together to keep our Beneficestrong and carry us forward with renewed hope during this challenging time.

Most Sundays of March we will be in Lent (time of fasting?) as we head towards Easter (thisyear mid-April). Easter of course means Easter Eggs (doesn’t it???) especially for all theyoung children, but if you would like something different & more meaningful to the time ofyear, I am planning our annual walk of Witness on Good Friday. You need good footwear asit’s mostly across country so not all roads. Dogs on leads most welcome. This year startingfrom Stratford Church 9.00am for a short opening act of worship, then 1st part of our story. We then walk to Higham Church for 10.45am where the 2nd part of the great drama of “ThePassion” – the story of Jesus, arrest and crucifixion is told. Then coffee & hot cross bunsbefore moving off to Holton Church for 12.15pm for the 3rd part of the drama to unfold. Thisis followed by a light lunch of soup, bread & cheese etc (small charge made) in village hallto fortify us for the onward walk to Raydon arriving 2.45pm (approx.) Here we have the finalpart of the drama, then some short prayers finishing at 3.15pm (approx.) A cup of tea &biscuits awaits before heading homewards.

The Easter Vigil at Raydon Church on Saturday 20th April @ 7.30pm will see the lighting ofthe Pascal (Easter) candles followed by a few short readings and prayers inside Church.Candles are then taken by Churchwardens back to their Churches to be used at EasterSunday services, plus any Baptisms throughout 2019. All are welcome to attend all Easterservices around the Benefice.

May God bless you all in this time of Lent as we lead up to the joyful celebration of Jesus’resurrection on Easter Day.

Geoff Horrex,Churchwarden, Raydon.
