Friday Night Eclectic Rocks the Mansion Strathmore’s Jazz Samba Project: a musical salute to Brazilian culture in DC

Be the Trendl

FRIDAY NIGHT ECLECTICDOORS 8PMMansionCome early for Happy Hour and have a cold one before the show.

The rich traditions of Brazilian bossa nova have spread triumphantly around the world, thanks in no small part to the release of the landmark 1962 Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd album, Jazz Samba.

Recorded in Washington, DC at the All Souls Unitarian Church, Jazz Samba was the first major bossa nova album on the American jazz scene.

It sold half a million copies in 18 months, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Pop chart, and stayed there for 70 weeks. The Jazz Samba Project is Strathmore’s salute to a cultural phenomenon that started here in the DC area and went on to rock the world.

ARTIST CONFIDENTIAL: ANTWAN BETHEAl

He is every bit as witty and charming as you might expect, and more caring and down-to-earth than you’d imagine. Strathmore News spoke with the best-selling Latin artist in history, Julio Iglesias: international superstar-singer-sex symbol and headliner at Strathmore’s Annual Gala on April 26.

Strathmore News: After selling more than 300 million records worldwide, you recently re-recorded your greatest hits into a new album. Why re-record your songs now?

Julio Iglesias: I did it because I had a little free time (laughs). I wanted to get a legacy, a better sound that was more contemporary, more clean—more digital. Music is such a progressive thing, and I’m still learning, still improving. This album reflects my growth as a singer.

SN: You’re touring the world after 45 years in show business—most people would be thinking of retiring! What drives you?

JI: The thought of the future, and of what I can still accomplish. The past is very important, yes, but the most important thing is the future. I’m very grateful—extremely grateful—because I never expected to be able to reach people, and here I am connecting with audiences all over the world.

SN: How many languages do you speak?

JI: One hundred twenty five! (Laughing.) No, I speak the language of passion. French, Spanish, Portuguese, English—the most important is the language of love. That’s why I can play in Hong Kong, in Tel Aviv and in Maryland. I don’t do anything with-out passion.

SN: You’ve had a number one hit with Willie Nelson and a duet with Diana Ross, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before.” Who is your favorite singing partner?

JI: My favorite one is when I sing with people in the audience—they sing along with me and I love it. I’m playing in Ireland this spring, in Dublin and Belfast, and they sing like birds. That’s when I love it the most, when the people feel my passion and they sing right along with me.

SN: You’ve performed around the world—any concert halls you really love to play?

JI: No two audiences are the same, but the venues are the same. Yes, there is a beautiful hall, but when I am on the stage I will close my eyes, open my eyes: when I feel the passion I feel the same no matter where I am. For me to play anywhere, now, after 50 years, there is nothing better. And there is no reason for me to sing without the people.

High school hormones, plotting Queen Bees, lovable underdogs, and a charming coming-of-age story of friendship and loyalty—Bring It On: The Musical has all this plus the incredible pre-cision acrobatics of top-tier cheer. Strathmore News spoke with original cast member Antwan Bethea, a top cheerleader who has been part of Bring It On from its early days in Atlanta to its Broadway run to the current tour which brings the gravity-defying musical to Strathmore.

Strathmore News: Tell us about Bring It On: The Musical. Is it anything like the movie?

Antwan Bethea: Bring It On: The Musical is similar to the movie; it’s inspired by the movie, but not the same. It’s definitely something like you’ve never seen before. There’s a new character, a cheerleader named Campbell, who’s transferred to a rougher ‘hood where she struggles to keep her dreams alive.

Like the movie, you have the rivalry between the preppie squad and the urban squad. You also have the camaraderie that develops on a cheer squad, the nervousness of getting ready for nationals. But

because it’s live, Bring It On: The Musical offers real thrills: these intricate routines with incredible gym-nastics, aerial stunts. it’s like human fireworks!

SN: You cheered through college—How did you get started? Was it unusual for a boy to be a cheerleader?

AB: Where I come from it was very unusual! I was the only boy on my high school cheerleading squad. But I just loved to flip—ever since I was a little kid, learning to tumble in my grandmother’s backyard. One of the cheerleaders saw me flipping at the bus stop, and it was easy to convince me to join the squad. I loved to hang around girls, loved to flip—cheerleading involved all the things I loved to do. It was a no-brainer for me.

SN: What makes Bring It On: The Musical spe-cial? Is there more to it than splits and kicks?

AB: Well, it has lyrics by Tony Award winning writer Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q) and music by Tony winners Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights) and Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and Amanda Green. It’s a concert extravaganza with dance and gymnastic stunts and a message about find-ing friends where you never thought you’d find them. And it’s definitely something like you’ve never seen before.

From the canvas to the comic book, no form of art goes unnoticed at Strathmore. This spring the juxtaposition of our 23rd Annual Strathmore Artists Juried Exhibition and our celebration of comics, A Shared Universe: The Art of Comic Books, illustrates Strathmore’s never-ending commitment to exploring all media.

OPENING MARCH 8

The 23rd Annual Strathmore Artists Juried ExhibitionSATURDAY, MARCH 8–SUNDAY, APRIL 6This is it: the showcase of more than 200 elite artists and artisans known as the Strathmore Artists. Paintings, drawings, photographs; wood, fiber, metal; sculptured glass, ceramics and mixedmedia: the eclectic entries and their quality make this exhibition a favorite year after year.

Free Opening ReceptionSUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2-4PM

OPENING APRIL 12

A Shared Universe: The Art of Comic BooksSATURDAY, APRIL 12–SUNDAY, JUNE 8It’s an American invention and a 20th century institution, yet the comic book encompasses the arc of humanity that runs from prehistoric cave paintings to the graphic novels of the future.

Arnold Blumberg, former curator at Geppi’s Entertainment Museum, calls the comic book “not just a reflection of our culture—it is our culture.” A culture experienced on so many levels, whether it’s colored by memories of hiding under the covers with a flashlight and a comic book after bedtime or catching up with digital favorites online.

Ever since Superman kicked off the superhero comic genre in 1938, the medium’s influence has spread throughout the arts, influencing fine and performing arts as well as pop culture and becoming part of the fabric of human dreams.

This exhibit gathers all the elements of the art form, from original pencil drawing and hand inking to graphic design and digital manipulation, and beyond into the new incursions of what comic artist and theorist Scott McCloud calls “the infinite canvas” of web-based comics, games and graphic novels.

Step into the world of wonder that’s reflected in the comic genre; share it with someone

you love. It’s just as you remember, and so much more than you can imagine.
