A request put forth by Golden Hills School Division to re-designate approximately 20 acres of land to community service was denied at a public hearing March 25.
County councillors made their de-cision in front of a packed house at the Travelodge, where residents ex-pressed their concerns or hopes for a school to be built on the land.
“Of course we were disappoint-ed,” said Ron Kenworthy, chair of the school board. “We’ll be discuss-ing that at our board meeting April 13.”
This meeting will be used to dis-cuss what the board will do next. The board was planning to build the East Wheatland School on the site, which would be a stand alone kindergarten to grade 12 school that would draw students from Gleichen, Rockyford, Standard and Hussar.
The board was planning on clos-ing the schools in these commu-nities and busing kids to the new school.
This was the second public hear-ing, held to discuss the re-designa-tion of land. The first was recessed by the GHSD after they were asked to provide the county with some ad-ditional information.
GHSD was asked to discuss their area plan for the site, such as how the school would be placed on the
site and how they would deal with water and waste water.
They were also asked to discuss how roads would be impacted and potential busing routes for students, along with parking and emergency evacuation plan in case something was to happen.
The board was also asked to ex-plain the statement “New School or No School” and stated that with declining enrolment, surplus space and the current buildings that need maintenance are on a low priority list from the Alberta Government.
Kenworthy said during the meet-ing, that consolidation is essential and the board will not compromise school programs for old buildings.
Kenworthy did note that the Min-ister of Education Dave Hancock has said that a brand new building in East Wheatland is a priority be-cause it is a good business plan for the board.
“We tried to address comments for what the meeting was for and that was the suitability of that site,” said Kenworthy. “We tried not too revisit, as we had the first time, anything to do with the boards decision.”
Four members of the public made presentations, one in favour of the re-designation and three against.
Then, 14 members of the public made their comments known, also speaking for and against the pro-posal.

Man, I feel like a woman!Students from Crowther Memorial junior high enjoyed some lunchtime entertainment March 25 as the school held a ‘Man I Feel Like A Woman’ beauty contest. Each grade elected a ‘Man” and the rest of the class helped this candidate Feel Like a Woman. Grade 9 student Josh Smith was the winner for her … um, his … category. This is just one way the students can stay involved and have fun together. Earlier in the week, the whole school dressed in purple and sold purple donuts, to support National Epilepsy Day. The sounds of the Beatles could be heard in the Strathmore High School gym March 23.
Bands from the High School and Crowther Memorial Jr. High played a variety of Beatles music for their “Bea-tlemania” concert.
“It was so much fun. The kids had a great time,” said Karly Zinken, band teacher. “The audience really enjoyed the concert. I talked to so many par-ents who said it brought back some memories for them, so that was good.”
Some of the songs played included: “When I’m 64”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, “Twist and Shout”, “Hey Jude” and “Imagine”.
The classes used the Beatles songs for much more than entertainment. They used them to study different aspects of music such as the form of
a song and learning about the differ-ences between intro, chorus, bridge, verses and outros.
The songs were also used to study the elements of music such as the rhythm, tempo, how fast or slow the music is, melody and harmony and how to listen for different instruments that are being used.
“We thought it would be fun for the kids to learn about music in a new way,” said Zinken. “They can relate to the slightly more modern music, al-though if you ask the kids it’s old, but it’s newer than classical music.”
The different ensembles have been looking at the Beatles music since January along with other classical pieces, they have been preparing to play at festivals.
The bands that performed were the Grade 7 band, Grade 8 band, Grade 9 and then a high school band made up of students in Grades 10, 11 and
12 and two jazz bands, one from the junior high and one from the senior high.
Two girls also sang during the night and a small student group called Ivy Inferno played their own version of Eleanor Rigby.
The Band Parent’s Association orga-nized a silent auction and a bake sale to raise money to subsidize the cost of instrument rentals. More than $3,000 was raised.
“A month’s worth of rentals for the Band Parent’s Association is $2,500,” said Zinken. “The kids do pay a rental fee, but that only covers about a third of our rental costs. The rentals are highly subsidized by these fundraisers and the Band Parent’s Associations.”
Along with practicing for their con-cert, the high school band attended the Alberta International Band Festi-val in Edmonton March 17 and 18.
The high school band played for a clinician at the University of Alberta and at the Festival.
“We had great feedback, learned a lot and had a ton of fun,” said Zinken.
The grade 8 and 9 bands are cur-rently getting ready to perform at the Alberta Band Association Festival of Bands in Red Deer in May.
The bands will be teaming up again, along with bands from the Catholic Schools, for Music Monday, May 3 at the Civic Centre, and then will play at the Concert in the Park May 28 in Kinsmen Park.

Approximately 130 people attended the second annual Fun, Fellowship and Festivities at the Holy Cross Collegiate March 26.
The night of fun is the parent council’s biggest fundraisers for the school during the year.
“It’s a fundraiser for the school and (all the proceeds go to) raise money for their
core subjects,” said Ange Beemer, co-social chair of the Holy Cross Collegiate Parent Council.
Some of the games included crib, ka-raoke and Rock Band; and there were numerous other games for the guest to enjoy. There was a funny-money silent auction and a real money silent auction.
“(This is) the parent council’s main fundraiser – this is the one event that they focus on during the year and they put a lot of time and effort into it to sup-
port the school,” said Holy Cross Colle-giate Principal Lavern Evans. “We did it last year and it was successful – a lot of people liked it and parent council defi-nitely wanted to keep doing it. There seems to be more interest this year than last year, so it’s good.”
According to Evans, with the current tough economic times and the lack of money in the budget, “it’s good to have an injection from parent council, so (this event) helps a lot.”

Do you have an estate plan?If you’re one of the millions of Canadians
who does not have an estate plan, why not start the New Year right by addressing this very important matter?Estate planning applies to everyone,
regardless of your wealth. In simple terms, an estate is everything you own - including real estate, investments and other property, as well as the debts you owe. When you die, you’ll want your assets to be passed along according to your wishes An estate plan can help ensure that happens. For most people, a plan will consist of a will
to specify who will receive your assets when you die, power of attorney to assign someone else the authority to act on your behalf in conducting your affairs, and a life insurance policy.A suggestion for your first step is putting
together a team of experts to help you. It’s recommended that you include a lawyer, a tax professional and a financial advisor. Speak with them to learn more and to devise and implement a strategy that makes sense for you. This is Sheetal A Pallana, your Edward

Continued from page 1Many of the comments made,
were about whether commu-nity schools should be closed, something Kenworthy thought was not in line with the hear-ing.
“I thought that a lot of the comments made during the meeting both by the audience and councillors had to do with the boards decision and it should have been more towards the county decision which was what the hearing was supposed to be about,” he said.
Ben Armstrong, Wheatland County Reeve said any pub-lic meeting is a chance for the public to voice their opinion of the matter at hand.
“Some of it maybe wasn’t the right place for it,” said Arm-strong. “Some of it was school issues, but when you have pub-lic hearings you hear every-thing. You don’t want to stop people from speaking as long as they’re not being belliger-ent.”
County councillors had their
chance to voice their concerns after the public had their say.
Alice Booth was concerned about wheather the capital funding from the province would come through, while Glenn Koester was concerned about bus routes.
Shirley Reinhardt asked about how much municipal re-serve the school board wanted, and Berniece Bland wanted clarification about the plans for evacuation and what would happen if the students were stranded there overnight.
Before the vote was read, the county’s planning depart-ment had indicated that GHSD had met all the criteria required for an Area Structure Plan and that additional concerns raised would be addressed in the fu-ture such as traffic, water and environmental at a later date.
A recorded vote was done and five members of county council opposed the re-desig-nation, while Bland and Arm-strong were the only ones to vote in favour of the request.

The leader of the Wild Rose Alliance party, Danielle Smith, was in Strathmore March 25 and spoke to a crowd of ap-proximately 130 people at the Travelo-dge.
Smith has been touring across Alberta, visiting residents and listening to their concerns about what is happening in Al-berta.
“I’m on a bit of a fact finding mission and it’s been helpful to hear in this com-munity some of the same issues that keep coming up in other municipalities that I visit,” said Smith.
She was elected as the leader of the Wild Rose Alliance Oct. 17, 2009 and said the party is currently starting to prepare for an election to happen in 2012.
Currently, Wild Rose holds three seats in the legislature with Paul Hinman from Calgary-Glenmore, Heather Forsyth from Calgary-Fish Creek and Rob Anderson from Airdrie-Chestermere all holding seats.
Smith said that with only four elected members, it’s hard to hear all the issues constituents are facing across Alberta and that they want to start getting constituen-cies set up so they can start electing and nominating candidates.
“Once we have candidates in each and every riding, I think people will have a point of contact, to be able to get their issues heard,” said Smith.
Smith started off her day in the Strath-more area touring Namaka Farms to hear about the issues effecting local business people in the livestock sector.
“We have to find a way to take the regulatory burden off of our producers if we’re going to allow them the freedom to compete on the international stage,” said Smith. “The more we load them up with regulations, the more difficult it is we’re making it for them to be competitive.”
At the Travelodge, people were invited to have lunch before hearing Smith speak about the Wild Rose Alliance Party, their policies and some of their future plans.
Smith spoke about the Wild Rose Al-liance’s view on the role of government and said that it’s a government’s job to set the rules, enforce them and then step aside, and the current decision-making process by the provincial government has to be decentralized.
“I think they’ve [the provincial gov-ernment] taken a wrong approach,” said
Smith. “I think they’ve taken a central-planners approach and I think they are going to end up with a lot of push-back from landowners and municipalities as a result of it.”
Smith said the decision-making has to be pushed back to the local level because they are the ones who know how to deal with issues that effect them.
Smith spoke about the Wild Rose Al-liance policy platforms and how they would have addressed the $4.7 billion deficit the province is facing.
Smith spoke about how the Wild Rose would get Alberta back into the black financially after two years by reducing capital and operational spending, end-ing corporate subsidizes and changing the management to worker ratio in the public sector.
She also spoke about where their party stands on oil royalties, health care and a bit on agricultural and land-use planning.
“There’s concerns about the budget, the closure of health facilities or the lack of construction on new and needed fa-cilities,” said Smith. “Strathmore is not the only place dealing with these issues, it’s happening all over the province. The fact that it’s happening all over the province and coming up again and again suggest to me there’s a big problem in the way decisions are being made right now un-der the current government.
Smith finished off her time in Strath-more with a question and answer section, where people asked more specific ques-tions about the issues she already raised.
Smith said during her speech that the Wild Rose Alliance has “a unique oppor-tunity to build something that has mean-ing and impact.”
She said the big test will in the next election.
“We’re hoping that once we’ve run a full slate of candidates that we’ll get a number of them elected and then we’ll be able to represent Alberta’s interest in the legislature,” Smith said.

Students from Westmount School were out March 25 to help clean up Kinsmen Park as part of their challenge program.
The program is held for those students who need that extra challenge in school.
The school runs about five challenges throughout the school year and the current chal-lenge is community service.
“The kids sat down and brain-
stormed things they would like to do, we voted on it and we have about five projects that we have going,” said Dana Graff, as-sociate principal.
The current challenge the students have is working three Thursdays by doing work around the town. The first was to help clean up Kinsman Park, the second is tree planting and the third one is undecided.
Students will also be going to the Calgary Zoo and work-ing there for a day, working four
times at the senior’s lodge, help-ing the Fire Department to set up their memorial display, and they will spend another day at the Fire Department as junior firefighters.
Graff said it helps the students with organizational skills, learn-ing about civic responsibility and being community-minded.
After all the projects are com-pleted, students will have a pow-erpoint presentation for their family and classmates about their experiences.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report
One of the major planks in the Conservative Party of Cana-da’s election campaign platform has been the elimination of the long gun registry. In the mid 1990s the Liberal government foisted this ‘tax’ on law abid-ing firearms owners and users and since then the registry has proven to be a wasteful expen-diture of over a billion taxpayer dollars and an ineffective means of reducing the criminal misuse of long guns.
Calls and emails continue to come in to me to scrap the wasteful long gun registry. In our government’s recent Speech from the Throne, we re-com-mitted to scrapping the regis-try by announcing our support for Manitoba MP Candice Ho-eppner’s Private Members Bill C-391 to abolish the gun regis-try. Her Bill is now at the House of Commons Justice Commit-tee for hearings and clause-by-clause study. It will be reported back to the House of Commons in the coming weeks for a final vote before proceeding to the Senate where it will repeat the process.
Along with the appointment
of new Conservative Senators to the Senate of Canada, there has been a restructuring of Senate committees and this will surely assist Conservative government supported legislation that comes to the Senate from the House. The previously Liberal-domi-nated Senate prevented or de-layed passage of numerous bills since 2006, particularly those in the government’s crime-fighting agenda.
Taxpayers know that many lives could have been saved for the well over a billion dollars that has been already spent on the costly long gun registry. Front-line police, anti-gun-smuggling units, rehabilitating offenders, diversion programs, and victims’ services are just some of the ‘better places’ this public money should have been spent to deal with firearms-related crime and carnage in Canada’s big cities.
No one ‘relies’ on the long gun registry either. It is well documented that it is fraught with inaccuracies and misman-aged. Police officers are trained to approach every domicile as if there are firearms inside. How many firearms confiscated from street gangs and other organized crime members are registered?
As Bill C-391 proceeds through Parliament, our Government has
re-extended the current amnesty to help firearms owners comply with the law. This includes: a one-year amnesty to give own-ers of non-restricted firearms an opportunity to register those firearms and renew expired li-cences without fear of prosecu-tion; a one-year waiver of the fee for firearms license renewals or upgrades; and, allowing eli-gible holders of expired Posses-sion-Only Licenses to apply for a new one within a year.
The extension of these mea-sures will prevent the pointless criminalization of non-restricted gun owners who are working to come into compliance. These measures have proven effective in protecting Canadians by mak-ing sure that as many gun own-ers as possible are properly and lawfully licensed. Our Govern-ment believes that gun control should target criminals, not law-abiding citizens. It should pro-mote safe streets, not penalize the lawful activities of hunters and rural Canadians.

The Strathmore Minor Lacrosse league is looking for midget players for the up-coming season.
The league currently has enough play-ers to field two small teams, but is look-ing for up to an additional six players to have two decent sizes teams.
“I was pleasantly surprised to see how many kids wanted to come back and play [midget],” said Todd Betterton, coach and president of Strathmore Mi-
nor Lacrosse. “There’s a lot of running in lacrosse,
so if I could find a few more kids in that midget age range it would sure help us be able to compete at a higher level be-cause we’d have more people to do the running.”
There are currently 26 players regis-tered and a team usually averages ap-proximately 17 players.
Players for midget level for this season would have to be born in 1994 or 1995.
In other lacrosse news, the association will be moving back to play in the Cal-gary and District Lacrosse Association.
“It’s pretty exciting for the associa-tion,” said Betterton.
The team has played the last two years in the Southern Alberta Lacrosse As-sociation, which included teams from Brooks, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.
One reason the association decided to move back to CDLA was because of the travel time. Another was that teams were playing two games on Saturdays.
“Two games of a physical, hard game like lacrosse can be taxing on a young person’s body,” said Betterton.
He also said they weren’t finding the same level of play in the SALA league, facing either very strong teams or very weak teams.
“We just thought there would be more parity, which would help in our skill development and interest in the sport,” said Betterton.
The Calgary league has a tiered system because of the number of players and teams.
Strathmore teams will be ranked in the tier their coaches think they can compete at.
Also new this year is that the mini-tykes and tykes will move to a system like that of Timbit’s hockey.
These two levels will focus on skill de-velopment and compete in small scrim-mages where they don’t keep score, with no physical contact, and where it’s fun for the kids.
“That’s a province-wide decision to move that way, so that’s very exciting for lacrosse in general,” said Betterton.

It was an intense and nerve-wracking game for both players and families March 28 as the Strathmore Storm Midget Tier 2 compet-ed against High River for the division banner.
With the game deadlocked at two for the majority of the second and third period, the Storm was able to net a goal with less than five minutes to play, to pull ahead and cap-ture the title 3-2.
“I can’t think of a better feeling,” said Doug Pagen-kopf, head coach. “The boys played great. They did every-thing we asked of them this year.”
Pagenkopf said the series between Strathmore and
High River was tough. Strath-more took the first game 4 to 2 March 19, even though Pagenkopf said High River outplayed them.
The teams played March 27 in High River, where he said Strathmore outplayed High River, but came up short in a 2-0 loss.
In the final game in Strath-more, Pagenkopf said it could’ve gone either way, but they were lucky to get the goal when they did.
A key player in the win was defenseman Cody Bet-terton, who assisted on the first goal and then scored the final two goals.
“He’s a great skilled play-er,” said Pagenkopf. “He was out the first game [of the se-ries] with a concussion, so we didn’t let him play. That’s
why he had a little more gas in the tank today.”
Pagenkopf said another key player was goaltender David Barbeau, who finished the playoffs with an average of less than two goals against per game, which always gave them a chance to win.
The Midget team’s season was plagued with injuries, including several concus-sions, broken bones and a ruptured spleen.
“This never slowed the team down at all, in fact they got stronger as the season went on,” said Pagenkopf.
“I knew all season long, we had a good chance to win the league. This group was a great bunch to coach and I’m glad to see them finish this season as champions.”

The Strathmore Storm pee wee tier 4 battled hard in the final game of the year for the banner, but came up short to Nanton.
In the third game of the final series; Nanton lead by two goals into the third period and even-tually won the game 6-2 for the division banner.
“For the boys and girl to not win it they’ll be pretty sad be-cause this is what they were try-ing to accomplish,” said Kelly Wheeler, head coach.
Wheeler said Nanton had some really strong players, and the Storm lost their nerve and started worrying when Nanton pulled ahead, and didn’t focus on winning.
“It was all nerves,” said Wheel-er.
Wheeler said the team should have won both of the first two games in the series. The team lost in a shootout in game one at home in Strathmore, and then won the second game in Nanton.
“We work as a team every game and we have to beat the
other team’s stars and today we just didn’t, but usually we do,” said Wheeler.
The final game was similar to a situation early in the regular season, when the Storm were down two goals to Nanton and ended up coming back and beat-ing them.
Wheeler spoke about this dur-ing the second intermission to try and get the team going, but said Nanton’s star players just came out harder.
Wheeler said the year has been fantastic, even though the team lost two of their first five games to a team that ended up finish-ing 11th.
“We went from losing to the 11th place team [earlier in the year] to playing the last game of the year,” said Wheeler. “We were there the whole way, we just came up two periods short.”
Wheeler said it was a great group of players this year and that the team didn’t have super-stars, but a team of great hockey players.
“To be playing meaningful hockey on March 28 is every-thing,” said Wheeler.

With the playing sea-son over, the 2009-2010 Wheatland Kings hockey team got together one last time as a group for their annual awards din-ner.
The night recognized not only outstanding players, but also those behind the scenes.
“It was a really good night,” said Doug Mur-phy, head coach. “It was good to see everybody together again. It’s an op-
portunity to thank the sponsors, volunteers and fans.”
Volunteers were recog-nized for their time spent selling tickets and acting as scorekeepers, penalty box officials, announcers, photographers and the national anthem singer.
Player awards were giv-en out for leading scorer, most improved, sports-manship, most dedicated player, rock solid player, outstanding forward, out-standing defenseman, unsung hero, rookie of the year, player’s choice
and most valuable player. The coaching staff de-
cides on the awards over the course of a couple weeks.
“This year they were all fairly difficult,” said Mur-phy.
This year, goalie Korey Burne of Strathmore took home the Most Valuable Player award and the Kemstone Rock Solid Player award for being awarded the most points in the three star selec-tions after every game.
This was second year Burne was honoured
with both awards.“He’s just an exception-
ally good goaltender,” said Murphy. “He keeps us in games that we could be getting blown out of and guys play with con-fidence in front of him.”
Burne is eligible to come back to the team next year and be one of the four 21-year-olds the team is allowed to play.
The team also hon-oured and presented Justin McKinnon with a signed jersey from the team as he finished his junior career and is now
too old to return to the team next year.
“He is just an excep-tional young man, hard working and will do any-thing for the team and his teammates and leads by example,” said Murphy.
The dinner also fea-tured a silent auction with numerous jerseys and framed pictures up for bids.
The money raised goes toward the Wheatland Kings hockey program.

With a second chance to claim the South Central Alberta Hockey League north division title March 23, the Wheatland AA Chiefs couldn’t recap-ture the glory.
The midget team thought they had claimed the division title March 21, after beating the Red Deer Elks on home ice, only to learn later that the game had to be re-played because the Chiefs had accidentally used an ineli-gible player.
“It’s been pretty hard on everyone,” said Devin Olson, head coach.
A Wheatland Chief player had been suspended in the second game of the series and Olson said they hadn’t heard about any additional suspen-sion, so the player played in the origi-nal third game.
“We went through every precau-tionary thing we could, sending emails and phone calls,” said Olson.
Red Deer protested the game after-wards and the league announced that an illegal player was used who was
supposed to be suspended.Olson said that according to the
rules, if an illegal player is used the game should be forfeited, but the president of the league didn’t want that, so an additional game was played.
The third game was originally played in Strathmore and the re-scheduled game was supposed to be played at the Family Center March 22. However, the game was played March 23 in Red Deer.
“They were in the wrong and they’re trying to make it even for both teams, is what it came down to,” said Olson. “We had to go up there, either that, or they would have put in a protest [to Hockey Alberta] and they probably would have won the protest.”
Olson said it was tough to go and play a fourth game in Red Deer and that it was also pushed back a day to give the players an extra day to cool down and re-focus.
Olson said the kids came out and started hard, until a Chief player hit an Elk player from behind in the first period.
The player had to be taken out on a stretcher for precautionary reasons, but was okay.
“There was a big delay in the game and we ending up getting a five-min-ute penalty on it,” said Olson. “They ended up scoring a few goals on that power play, which kind of took the flow away from our guys.”
By the end of the first period, the Chiefs were down 5-0, but Olson said they battled back by outplaying and out shooting the Elks in the second and third period.
“We had the momentum, we just couldn’t score,” said Olson.
The Chiefs lost the game 6-3, which they played without three key players said Olson, one with a broken thumb, one out with a suspension and the one out for the hit from behind.
Besides the final game, Olson said it was a successful season with the team only losing four games all regular season, a 20-game unbeaten streak, finishing first in the division in goals for, second in goals against and winning the north division in the regular season.
“We had a good group of kids too this year. They’re all pretty good friends,” said Olson. “They are a pretty close group too, which always helps.”
The team will lose more than half of their players next season because they have reached 17 years of age, which means they are now eligible for juniors.
The rest of the team may not all come back either, said Olson, with some possibly making the jump to AAA or going to juniors.
However, he said it should be a pretty good group next year, be-cause of the players coming up in the league.

Times TidbiTsThe Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. The bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have it’s
origins in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500s. The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany during the early 1800s. The first bunnies were not made of

The Rockyford Ringers U19 ringette team host-ed, for the second year in a row, provincials at the Rockyford Arena.
Even though Rockyford didn’t make it into the play-off round, head coach Earl Harriman said every game was really close.
“The competition was certainly strong,” said Har-riman. “It wasn’t due to lack of effort, the girls played hard.”
Harriman said the best part of the tournament is the people you meet along the way and this year the tournament went very smoothly.
The Ringers played in a pool with Southview Prime,
Lacombe Havoc and Ed-monton Chaos.
The Medicine Hat Strive beat the Cochrane Rockies in the gold medal final to take home top prize, while the Edmonton Chaos beat Lacombe Havoc to win bronze.
Harriman said early in the season the Ringers had beat Medicine Hat by one goal, and had faced the Cochrane Rockies for the league championship and won the first game, but lost the final two games.
“It always seemed like we were one goal short, but it was definitely great compe-tition,” said Harriman.
Harriman said it was a development year for the team and those who are eligible want to come back next year.

What better way to celebrate another suc-cessful season for the Strathmore Minor Rin-gette Association than to hold a party to recog-nize their players March 28.
They celebrated by introducing each team, recognizing the accomplishments they’ve had and handing out player recognition awards.
“It’s a complete celebration and tribute to our coaches and all the volunteers that have participated in the season and of the players and their achievements in the year,” said De-nise Taplin, president of the SMRA.
Taplin said it’s been a very successful season for the assocation.
The association had record numbers for reg-istration and saw the most pre-bunnys ever, those under the age of six and are just learn-ing ringette.
The association tried really hard this year to field a U19 team, the oldest team in minor ringette, but in the end was unable to get the numbers.
Taplin said they are confident they will have a U19 team next year because the numbers are stronger in the upcoming group.
“We will be able to offer a team for every player from the age of three to 18,” said Taplin.
Two of the minor ringette teams won the banner in zone two this year, the Tween B team and the Junior A team.
These teams, along with the Petite A and Ju-nior B, attended provincials.
“I think all the girls had fun at a provincial level competition,” said Taplin. “The sport is at a high caliber level and I think our teams did well and enjoyed their time.”
At the party, each team was called up on stage and each player was introduced. Coaches also spoke of what tournaments the teams attended and how the players improved throughout the course of the year.
The association awarded the Laurie Morton Ruppe Award to four players in the tween and junior division for the sportsmanship qualities they show on the team.
The players who were awarded were Tas-sia Rushford from the Tween Ice Thrashers, Stephanie Meyers from the Tween Ice Sisters, Jenna Gigantelli from the Junior Ice Ice Baby and Kirsten Dunlop from the Junior Ice.
Each coach spoke about how hard it was to choose just one player on the team, but that they were all great leaders and gave it their all on the ice.
The association handed out 10-year pins to players Becca Dunlop and Kirsten Dunlop. Board members and adult volunteers Darrin Dunlop, Vicky Morris, Barb Steele and Rina Hemple were also recognized for their com-mitment to the sport.
“They’re passionate about the sport and to see that range of age and enjoyment they get from each level it’s really exciting.”

Strathmore High School hosted their home badminton tournament march 27. Players came out to play singles, doubles and mixed games of bad-minton at Strath-more High School, Crowther memo-rial Junior High and Wheatland el-ementary Schools. amy gregson Photo

More than 400 badminton players came from 12 schools across Alberta March 27 as Strathmore High School hosted the provinces largest badminton tournament.
With so many players, the tourna-ment had to be held at Strathmore High School, Crowther Memorial Jr. High and Wheatland Elementary School.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s really good competition for the kids,” said Kenton Zandee, badminton coach.
Jennifer Murray was able to win the bronze medal in girls singles, her first placing this badminton season.
Zandee said Murray was a bit surprised because singles is not her strong suit as she usually plays doubles.
“It was a pleasant surprise,” said Zan-dee.
Zandee said he thinks the entire team competed very well as they were up against some of the best in the province, especially because a lot will make it to provincials.
“Some of my players I moved up into higher age categories to make it more dif-ficult for them just because it will pay off when they go to county and zone’s them-selves,” said Zandee.
The different disciplines were singles, doubles and mixed doubles and then stu-dents were divided into junior, intermedi-ate and senior based on age.
Gavin and Carly Malcher from Standard School received a sliver medal in junior mixed doubles.
“They don’t usually play together,” said Ed Yu, coach. “It was nice to see them be able to play without practicing and play well.”
Their record in the round robin was six and one and they ended up playing a three game match against a pair from Eagle Butte.
The pair lost the first game and game back to win in the second, but couldn’t pull off a win in the third game.
After the Easter break, SHS will host the county tournament April 14 starting at 12:30 p.m. and than host Zones April 24 for those students who qualified from the county tournament.
