Strathmore-Brooks MLA Arno Doerksen was touring through the constituency while the legislature took a break March 29 to April 1.

Doerksen made a stop at the Travelodge March 30 to speak about issues affecting Alber-tans, and also hear their con-cerns.

“These are good meetings,” said Doerksen. “I appreciate connecting with people.”

Doerksen spoke on four is-sues including the electoral boundaries, the economy and the budget, health care, and Bill 1, which deals with com-petiveness in Alberta.

On the electoral boundaries, Doerksen said many people have expressed great concern over the proposed division of the Strathmore-Brooks constit-uency.

If the report goes through, Strathmore would be in a con-stituency with Chestermere.

Doerksen said currently, it is widely known and accepted that the Strathmore-Brooks constituency encompasses the Counties of Wheatland and Newell in their entirety.

When you look around the province it’s an enviable posi-tion,” said Doerksen. “There

are some rational reasons why people have concerns with the proposal that has been made and I’m optimistic and hopeful the Review Commission will respond to the concerns of the constituency.”

Public hearings have been scheduled for April 12 and 13 in Calgary for people to ex-press their concerns in person about the proposed changes made by the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission.

In regards to the economy, Doerksen acknowledged that oil prices have doubled and the government is making signifi-cant investments in five new oil sands projects.

He spoke also about the $4.7 billion deficit in the budget and said it is a reasonable balance between fiscal disciplines and program spending.

Doerksen said Alberta is in a unique situation because they can draw on money from the sustainability fund to cover the deficit, which no other jurisdic-tion in Canada can.

He said it is a very strategic time to invest in infrastructure projects.

For health care, Doerksen said the increased health care budget will let the government get a hold on things and bring wait times down for surgeries.

After a three-week break, Wheatland County was back in session with a packed agenda.

With such a packed agenda, here are some highlights of what was discussed.

• The province of Alberta announced March 16 they are freezing the central-ization of ambulance dispatchers. Man-ager of Protective Services Gerald Skib-insky, said the County just has to take a wait-and-see approach before moving workers.

• A clarification was made on the planning moratorium that was passed March 2. The original motion stated that multi-parcel subdivisions are on hold until the Growth Management Study is completed. However, county would still consider first-parcels out and develop-ment in hamlets. The resolution was amended to clarify that the Nightingale and Rosebud hamlets are on hold as well, until the Area Structure Plans are

completed. County will also consider farmland separation even if it’s not first-parcel out.

• The county decided that a gravel loader retains the right to refuse to load any vehicle with gravel if they see fit.

• The Carseland community annual waste clean up will be happening April 30 and May 1. The community asked the county for trucks and waste bins to help with the clean up. The county decided to have extra bins and staff at the waste transfer site in Carseland. The transfer site is usually closed on Fridays, but the councilors decided to open it on April 30 from 12 to 8 p.m. On May 1, the site will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extra staff on site to help people dispose of their waste. Councilors asked that people are aware ahead of time of what they can dump and what they can’t and that it must be sorted.

• There are two fire hydrants in Glei-chen that aren’t working. Gerry Van Oostwaard from public works said they would look into this problem, because it

is a safety issue.• The sidewalks in Carseland that

need repairs will be finished by the end of the year said Van Oostwaard.

• Van Oostwaard also reported that signs for Township and Range Road are in the process of being replaced. Ap-proximately 35 signs across the county had to be changed because they had wrong information. Also, 250 signs had fallen off because the brackets they were mounted on couldn’t withstand winds. The brackets are being replaced and grader operators have been asked to keep their eyes open for missing signs.

• As of March 29, a fire ban was in ef-fect for Wheatland County.

• The county decided they would go with Dillon Consulting Limited to con-duct the Area Structure Plan and Growth Management Study. In their proposal, Dillon said they would hold the first set of public meetings in April or May, and another set in August. The first draft is expected in September, with the final draft to be distributed in December.

Shaylin, 13, and Elora, 6, Eldjanson have both been growing their hair out since they were young girls, but soon it will be about 10 inches shorter as they cut their hair for a good cause.

The girls will be cutting their hair on April 13 and donating it to Angel Hair for Kids, which is A Child’s Voice Foundation program that donates hair to make into wigs and hair pieces at no cost for financially disadvantaged children who’ve lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment.

“We lost three members of our fam-ily already to cancer and we wanted to cut our hair and do a fundraiser,” said Shaylin.

The girls have lost their grandfa-ther, an uncle and a cousin to cancer.

Their mother’s aunt has been bat-tling breast cancer for the past six years.

“I’m pretty proud of them. I think

it’s great that they are going to give something back,” said the girls mother, Michelle. “I’ll miss the hair though.”

The girls will be cutting their hair April 13 at the X-Hale Salon in Lang-don, a place they have been going to since moving to the town.

“They’ve been chomping at the bit to cut their hair for quite some time,” said Michelle.

Shaylin said it will be easier for her with shorter hair to put it in a bun for Air Cadets, and that her friends are excited and want to come watch her get her hair cut.

“My teacher wants to come too,”

said Shaylin.The girls are also raising money

for the Canadian Cancer Society and have gotten many pledges from their teachers at the Langdon School.

Their goal was $500, but they have already surpassed that.

The family will be going door-to-door in Langdon over the coming weeks to try and raise more money.

“It’s a good way for them to learn that other people don’t have it so easy,” said Michelle.

Grade 9 to 12 students from across the Golden Hills School Division will gather in Carbon April 16 for a student “Speak Out” forum.

These forums are used to invite stu-dents to talk about their educational ex-periences, their learning styles, what is working for them and what they would like to see happen in their schools.

“It’s going to be wonderful,” said Ron Kenworthy, chair of the Golden Hills School Division.

The Speak Out forums have been

happening across Alberta every fall and spring since 2008 and are small group discussions between students.

The one being held in in Carbon will feature 80 to 90 grade 12 students from all high schools in Golden Hills.

They will be asked four questions, with three of the questions suggested by the province. Then the board will ask a question about their foundation statement and how they can make it work in the schools.

The questions are: “What does it look like when you’re learning at your best? What is holding you back from learn-ing at your best? What actions can

adults take to improve how education looks and feels? and What actions can students take to improve how eduction looks and feels.

“We want to hear from the kids about how we can make education better for them, because they’re the ones going through it,” said Kenworthy. “A lot of times when you talk to young people they can tell you exactly what they need and what changes could help them.”

The forums will be lead by student fa-cilitators who will be trained ahead of time.

Also, the Minister of Education, Dave Hancock is looking for students aged 14

to 19 from across Alberta to serve on the Minister’s Student Advisory Council.

The individuals who are selected will be ambassadors for Speak Out and have the opportunity to take a leadership role to ensure the student voice is heard and considered.

Mini Meatloaf Sliders

1 pound of extra lean ground beef 1 egg ½ cup ketchup ¼ cup grated onion ¼ cup breadcrumbs 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce ¼ tsp garlic powder 1 tsp minced thyme 1 tbsp minced parsley Salt and fresh cracked pepper

24 small Kaiser buns ½ cup mayo

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place a cooking rack on a baking sheet and spray rack lightly with non-stick cooking spray. Combine all ingredi-ents (using only half the ketchup); in a large bowl and using your hands mix together. Shape tablespoonfuls of the meat mixture into small, thin patties, about 2” in diameter and place on the prepared rack and baste with remaining ketchup and bake about 20 minutes. While Sliders are cooking, prepare buns with mayo and serve one meatloaf slider on each Kaiser bun.

Dear EditorIt is possible for Health Care to use common sense &

be practical?Perhaps, they should ask the seniors who founded this

province about being ‘practical and using some good old-fashioned horse sense,’ they would soon set things right!

Currently information from other health care zone’s show that government funded Level 3 Assisted Living (24-hour staff on site) operators receives about $75 per person for just the care portion. This would equal $2,250 per month. Compare this to a local Level 3 Assisted Liv-ing; non-funded Care Home which is providing the same level of care (24-hour staff on site) for about $36 per person for the care portion which would equal $1,100 per month.

A Program called Self Managed Care is available to as-sist with the ‘care portion’ costs. This program is funded

and regulated by Alberta’s Ministry of Health and is ad-ministered by the Regional Health Authorities and it is available to individuals of any age who are eligible for home care.

Understand that Home Care cannot provide “place-ment” to a non-funded non Alberta Health Service ap-proved site, but it could be shared as an option that is licensed as a Supportive Living Operator by Alberta Se-niors and Community Supports.

This flows into the vision of the Alberta Government of providing choice for seniors, regardless of whether or not the site is private, voluntary or public sector.

A business in Strathmore is doing its part to help others by collecting items for the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre.

Assist Business Centre tries to support different initiatives, and will be collecting travel mugs and hygienic items for dona-tions.

“I think it’s a good cause and we’re more than happy to do it,” said Grace Schouten from Assist

Business Centre.The group is focusing on trav-

el mugs after Schouten saw a re-quest on the Free Cycle Calgary website, www.freecycle.org.

The website gives people the opportunity to post different items they have and don’t need anymore or items that they want.

Schouten saw a post from someone who works at the Drop In Centre for travel mugs they can give out as reimbursement to volunteers who clean for them in the morning.

They are looking for clean travel mugs with lids.

“That lead to what else do they need,” said Schouten. “We thought we’d try and collect it for them.”

Assist Business Centre will also be collecting travel or regu-lar size soap, shampoo, razors, combs, deodorant, toothbrushes and paste along with other items.

They will be collecting items on a ongoing basis, so make sure to get them to the Drop In Cen-tre said Schouten.

The final issue Doerksen brought about was Bill 1, which is to ensure Alberta remains competitive.

“Bill 1 is an important piece of business and that will set the

sion was held, in during which residents expressed their con-cerns on agricultural issues, disability funding, the land-use framework, Bill 50 and how it deals with power lines, the Age Care facility that is being built in Strathmore, and education.

Gleichen RCMP are seeking the publics assistance in solving the hamlet’s latest break and en-ter.

Thieves broke into the Glei-chen & District Library between the evening of April 1 and the morning of April 2.

The criminals smashed through

two doors of tempered glass with a piece of wood before stealing approximately $40 from the do-nation jar.

Surprisingly, to the best of the staff’s knowledge, that is all that was taken.

“That’s the strange thing, they went through all that effort to smash those windows and that’s all they took,” said Library Man-ager Faydra Beard of the stolen

donation jar. “I had a laptop sit-ting there – four computers, all (the) books and everything else and (the donation jar) is all they took.

“It is just frustrating that some-one would do that to a public place.”

The library, which serves the hamlet, the outlying area and Siksika has approximately 130 members and over 10,000 books.

Thieves break into Gleichen & District Library

A trailer containing four snowmobiles was stolen off a rural property located at Glen-more Trail and Highway 791 sometime between November 16 and 19, 2009.

The stolen items were: a 2008 white Polaris RmK snow-mobile with a ViN# SN1Pm-7JS78C353029 and an Al-berta license plate of WC334, a 2008 black and green Arctic Cat m8 snowmobile with a ViN#4UF08SNW28T111959 and an Alberta license plate of eU814, a 2005 black and red Arctic Cat m6 snowmobile with a ViN#4UF05SNW45T134097 and an Alberta license plate of Tm073, a 2005 black and red Arctic Cat m6 snowmobile with a ViN#4UF05SNW45T13405

with an Alberta license plate of Tm072 and a 2004 black WeLLS Cargo trailer with a ViN#1WC200L2544051673 with an Alberta license plate of S94002 and the interior is cus-tomized with shelving units.

The approximate value of the stolen items is $34,000. The RCmP said a heavy duty truck with a hitch would have been required to haul a trailer of that size and weight.

The RCmP is asking any-one with information on the identity of suspects(s), infor-mation concerning the theft or current location of the stolen items to contact the Stratmore RCmP at (403) 934-3968 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TiPS.

Years and years of practicing, has lead two Strath-more musicians to have unbelievable experiences that musicians dream of having.

Brother and sis-ter Timothy and Sarah Steeves have moved away from Strathmore to fulfill their mu-sical dreams and have accomplished great things.

Sarah has been playing the cello for more than 20 years and is cur-rently pursuing a doctorate in music at the University of Toronto.

On Feb. 18, Sarah had the op-portunity to play at Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas[YOA].

“Carnegie Hall is kind of like the musical Olympics,” said Sarah. “It’s

that nearly mytho-logical place you hear about with a huge amount of re-spect.”

She said that playing at Carn-egie Hall isn’t like most goals, like where you can control a grade on an exam by lots of practicing. Sarah said, to perform at Carnegie Hall you have to have a lot of luck and good timing.

“If it wasn’t for YOA, I probably

never would have gotten to perform there,” she said.

Sarah’s YOA ex-periences started last summer as she toured with the group through the United States and Canada and was involved with the group in Washing-ton D.C. for an out-reach project.

“The opportuni-ties that YOA gives me, seems to con-stantly place me outside of my mu-sical comfort zone, work with wonder-ful musicians that I would never other-wise meet,” Sarah said.

She said the ex-perience at Carne-gie Hall was magi-cal and that she had never been there before, even as an audience member.

She said it was fantastic to get to play with an or-chestra filled with people she loves, two world-class soloists and two amazing conduc-tors, including Valery Gergiev,

who conducted the orchestra from Red Square at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics as part of the Sochi 2014.

“Then, just to make it that much more awesome, we performed really well,” said Sarah. “The whole or-chestra was buzz-ing with energy.”

Timothy plays the violin and at-tends the Univer-sity of Michigan’s School of Mu-sic, Theatre and Dance.

He was selected as one of four stu-dents from his pro-gram to play at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washing-ton D.C. on May 10 as part of the Con-servatory Project.

“It is an honour to represent my school at one of North America’s premier artistic institutions,” said Timothy.

The conserva-tory project is an initiative of Per-forming Arts for Everyone’s Millen-

nium Stage and is designed to pres-ent young musi-cal artists in clas-sical, jazz, musical theatre and opera from the United States’ leading un-dergraduate and graduate conserva-tories, colleges and universities.

It is to showcase and introduce au-diences to young musicians destined to have important careers.

“We we’re like in shock,” said Caro-lyn Steeves, their mother. “It’s a huge honour. We were thrilled.”

The four stu-dents will be doing a 60-minute recital, with each perform-er given 15 min-utes to perform.

Timothy will be playing a program of Czech music from Martinu and Kapralova.

“I have a special liking of this rep-ertoire partly be-cause of my stud-ies in the Czech Republic during the past two sum-mers in particular

with Ivan Strauss who knew both composers person-ally,” said Timothy.

Timothy said he hopes to become a professional mu-sician and would love to play in one of the world’s ma-jor orchestras, in a string quartet

or anywhere he is privileged to play and study music.

“I’m very proud,” said Carolyn about Sarah and Timothy, fighting back tears. “Music is a tough life to make it as a musician and they’re both doing very well.”

The Wheatland Athletics Associa-tion (WAA) hosted their annual three-on-three hockey tournament this past weekend at the Strathmore Family Cen-tre.

Atom, peewee and bantam aged play-ers from the WAA draw area took part in the shinny tournament, which intro-duced them to a higher level of com-petition.

“It’s an opportunity for us to promote Wheatland double-A in our draw zone,” said WAA president Sandy Henry. “All the kids that come to this (tournament) are from our draw zone and we restrict it to that. It’s also an opportunity to get kids from all the other towns together so they can have some social interac-tion, maybe develop a little comfort level and hopefully develop an urge to come to Wheatland and try out for our double-A teams.”

According to event organizers, the annual three-on-three tournament has been in existence since the early 1990’s and is still going strong.

With the current format, there is a lot of open ice, which makes for some fun and exciting hockey to watch.

“Obviously there is some talent out there that we don’t get an opportunity to see unless we can draw them into a (regular season) tryout situation,” said Henry. “It’s a chance for us to see what the talent pool might look like moving forward.”

According to Henry, almost 100 play-ers took part in the weekend tourna-ment, which was originally introduced to peewee and bantam aged players.

“We decided to expand it into the atom group just to get an earlier start on exposing them to the program,” said Henry. “They’re an enthusiastic bunch always looking for a little extra hockey here and there, so we thought we’d in-clude them.

“Last year was our first year with the atoms, so we had a real good response.”

According to Henry, the number of players attending the tournament was down a bit from last year, but that was sort of expected with the Easter week-end.

“We’re a little disappointed this year – I think being a holiday weekend has gone against us a little bit,” he said in regards to attendance. “You know fami-lies are looking (toward) the first long-weekend with nice weather and every-one has a lot of things to do.”

An early spring has been taken advan-tage of by the Strathmore Reds Midget AAA team as they have already been out practicing.

In its second year of action, the Reds will have a good group of core players to draw on with 12 of 13 players returning from the team’s inaugural year.

“It should be a strong team because everybody knows each other,” said Zane

Anderson, coach.Anderson and Darwin Armitage, also

coaching the squad, said they set up the team last year because players were get-ting to the age where there would be no team left for them to play on in Strath-more.

The team finished with a record just be-low .500 last year and have gotten a great response from players who want to be on the team.

“During last year we had a lot of kids wanting to play with us and even this year

we had a lot of kids wanting to try-out,” said Anderson.

Out of the 13 players, four are from the Strathmore area, while others are coming from places like Calgary, Drumheller and Okotoks to play for the Reds.

Armitage said getting a whole team of players from Strathmore would be a dif-ficult thing to do.

“Once you get to this level you get to pick and choose who you want,” said Ar-mitage.

Anderson said the goal of the team this year is to gain respect from other teams in Alberta and Western Canada.

“Last year a lot of people didn’t know our concept and it sort of didn’t benefit us,” said Anderson.

The Strathmore Reds team play a tour-nament style of play.

“We’re not in a league again this year because at tournaments you get to see a lot of different teams, whereas if you are in a league you are playing the same teams week after week,” said Armitage.

With the tournament style they are able to travel a bit, and the Reds will make trips to Montana, B.C. and Medicine Hat, just to name a few.

“The boys have to get used to it be-cause that’s what college ball is all about,” said Anderson, about the travel. “That’s what most of them want to play [college

baseball], so it’s good to get them ready for that.”

With all the travel, the team doesn’t get to play many games in Strathmore, but will be playing some games in town in April.

The team started off the year in the Best of The West tournament in Penticton, B.C. from April 2 to 4.

They’ve already had a few exhibition games in Medicine Hat and have a few more games lined up, weather permitting.

The majority of the season will be played from May until the middle of Au-gust.

Girls interested in play-ing hockey next season had the opportunity to try out the sport, March 24.

Girls had the chance to learn on-ice skills with some experienced female hockey players.

“We just want to try and recruit more girls for hockey and a lot of them are too intimidated to come and register, so we

give them a free opportu-nity to come try it,” said Fern Pagenkopf, coordina-tor for female hockey in Strathmore.

The evening had Tristan Desmet, a former NCAA hockey player, and Strath-more Rockies player Pam Patterson out to help girls with passing, shooting and skating.

Pagenkopf said it’s usu-ally a struggle each year to get enough girls out to have all female hockey

teams in Strathmore.Minor hockey begins

fielding all-female teams at the peewee level, but take atom aged girls to play and get them started in hockey.

She said girls tend to wait until the last moment to register, while boys sign up right away.

The event is held in the spring and another one will be held in August so more girls can try out.

The Town of Strathmore is now hiring Census Takers for the 2010 Municipal Census. If you are a

Strathmore resident, physically able to walk long distances, and 18 years of age or over, you are invited to apply to be a Census Taker. Census

Takers are required for approximately 4 - 6 weeks starting approximately May 1st. Hours of work are flexible. Successful applicants must have their own

transportation and will be required to attend an evening training session prior to starting. Remuner-

ation is based on the number of people counted.

The Census provides an accurate count of the number of people living in the Town of Strathmore
