Town officials were happy when they heard the annexa-tion had been granted. The annexation had been in the works for a number of years, and finally on May 30, the Town got what they wanted.

“We found out about it a little after 3 p.m. last Friday and then we all got very ex-cited and are on cloud nine,” said Dwight Stanford, Chief Administration Officer for the Town of Strathmore.

In December of 2008 a pro-posal was put forth to the municipal government board and last June a hearing was called. “The board really liked the way we handled the presenta-tion,” said Stanford.

From December until June there were meetings held be-tween the town and county offices to determine exactly what it was both sides were hoping to achieve.

“This is a future thing,

which council has been plan-ning all along. We have now solved the water line, the waste water treatment and now we have resolved the an-nexation which was basically the last step in that 50,000 is not out of line, we are set for that kind of population,” said Mayor George Lattery.

Gleichen arena is finally getting the face lift it des-perately needed. It had previously been one of the few left in Alberta which still had a sand floor.

Through auc-tions, fundrais-ing, donations and grant applications the agricultural society and minor hockey association raised the $375,000

needed for con-crete floors and new arena boards. “It’s been 40 years coming. We had one of the last sand floor arenas, I think, in Alberta,” said Gordon Stew-art, president of the Gleichen Agri-cultural Society.

Having a sand floor arena meant the arena was not previously avail-able year round, limiting some events which could have used the space. “The sand allows us only to use the rink from November until March,” said Do-ris Lindman, vice-president of the society.

“Now we can hold concerts, the kids can roller-blade, it will be a multi-purpose 12 month arena,” said Lindman.

“We are hop-ing that we might get inline hockey going in the sum-mer months for the kids, you can’t inline on a sand

floor,” said Cara Sheppard, presi-dent of the minor hockey associa-tion.

Another prob-lem posed by a sand floor was that frost and heat would cause the sand/clay mixture to expand at dif-ferent rates, caus-ing the ice surface to become uneven. “People would complain about the quality,” said Lindman.

“What we did is, minor hockey raised the first batch of money and then we start-ed holding the community fund-raising auctions,” said Lindman.

The minor hock-ey association raised $100,000 towards the arena. The money the hockey associa-tion raised came from registration, ice rentals, tourna-ments and respon-sible spending.

The provincial Community Facil-ity Enhancement

Program, CFEP, gave the agricul-tural society a grant for $125, 000, Encana donat-ed 75,000, another 20,000 came from the Gleichen Lions, and through the Gleichen agricul-tural society annu-al auction $55,000 was raised.

“It’s a commu-nity effort and we have been plug-ging along with it for a long time, it’s nice to finally

reach there,” said Stewart.

Construction has already started on the arena and is said to finish up at the beginning of July. During the spring break five Gleichen youth volunteered their time to help with the demolition by pulling off arena boards. The arena will be ready for the new season which begins in October.

Talk of the residential irrigation, RI, lines has become a source of discontent amongst council. Two weeks ago a no-tice went out to the public stating the cost to use the irrigation was going up from $33 to $180, which worked out close to a 600 per cent increase. Council also wanted to sign 500 people up to use the irrigation by May 5, or the service would no longer be offered. Of the 500 requested only 103 people signed onto the irrigation.

“I’m vehemently opposed to shut-ting it down,” said Councillor Earl Best. Best was recommending in council May 6, that the system could be shut down for two years while repairs were made. It will cost the Town $3.4 million to re-pair the pumps, and Mayor George Lat-tery doesn’t know where the money will come from.

“We’re going to spend $3.4 million on 640 people, that’s going to cost taxpay-ers,” said Lattery.

“13,000 people could tie into it right now, but only 650 people used it last year. Some people who may want it but can’t have it because it’s not available in the newer areas,” said Dwight Stan-ford, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Strathmore.

“We underestimated how big a task this is,” said Councillor Bob Sobol. “It’s a great concept but a terrible system.”

Councillor Lois Wegener was not in favour of closing the RI either and re-quested a two week extension allowing residents a chance to come to the next council meeting and discuss how they feel.

“Maybe taxpayers might have some ideas we don’t,” said Wegener. If more than 500 people sign up for use of the RI, then the cost could come down.

“I’m just trying to break even,” said

Lattery. “It has cost taxpayers $156,000 to run for nothing.”

“Only certain people have access, it’s not fair for certain citizens to subsidize,” said Councillor Brad Walls.

Each section of the RI is independent and it would be possible to shut down and repair one section at a time. The big concern for Lattery is still where will the money come from. He asked numerous times what would happen if 500 people don’t sign up for the service, and no one had an answer for him.

According to Epcor it will cost approx-imately $750,000 to repair each section. “Hopefully there will be new info at the end of May, we can analyze and make a decision then,” said Councillor John Rempel.

Town council will be meeting again on May 19 to discuss the RI further. In order to be on the agenda and have a say, citizens must request time before May 13.

What Can Investors Learn from Maple Syrup Producers?

Canadians make about 80% of the world’s supply of maple syrup. Even if you’ve never tapped a maple tree, you may be able to learn a few things from maple syrup producers - particularly in the area of investing.

First of all , maple syrup production requires patience. Sugar maple trees generally need to be 20 years old before they can be tapped. As an investor, you also need to be patient. The longer you hold quality investments, the better your chances of overcoming short-term volatility and achieving positive results.

Second, just as the geography and geology provide the right environment for growing syrup-producing trees, you need to maintain a healthy environment for your investments. To provide the right “nutrients,” you need to stay invested through up and down markets. You also need to avoid “toxins” such as chasing after hot stocks or taking on excessive risk.

Finally, just as maple syrup producers must know exactly what they’re doing, you, too, need to be skillful when choosing investments. You may want to work with a professional financial advisor to help ensure that you make the right moves.

By tapping into some of the techniques used by maple syrup producers, you can help “sweeten” your investment results.

Continued from page 1“There are things that we have to do now, such

as snow removal on east boundary road and north boundary road, mowing the ditches, we’re responsible for that,” said Stanford.

The town is also now responsible for the fire service. For example, if there are grass fires, or accidents on the highway, it is up to them to send personnel out.

Another thing which changed is the census. Despite the economy Strathmore still grew by 4.9 per cent last year. The land tax for the first year will go to the county, and for the five years fol-lowing it will slowly decrease at which point the county will stop receiving the taxes.

The benefits of the annexation will affect the town for a long time to come and will not be an issue which needs to be raised again for a number of years. The town received just about everything asked for. Developers have already looked into buying this land, and the first phase has already been sold to four developers who are to begin work soon.

Six McDonalds locations competed in a challenge this past week to see which one could raise the most money for a lo-cal charity.

Gail and Doug Barnsley are the owner/operators of the six, which held fundrais-ing events leading up to McHappy day. For Strathmore it was the McCarnival, held on May 2.

Strathmore won the competition, beat-ing Airdrie and Cochrane by raising a total of $640 during the McCarnival.

Wanda Harnett manages the Strathmore locations and she and her management team came up with the idea. Gail Barnsley attended the McCarnival to see what the idea was, and how the team was doing.

“They are working as teams to raise funds for people,” said Gail.

“We are always proud of the staff for the time they put into it.”

On Wednesday May 5, 14,000 McDon-alds chains across the country celebrated the 17th annual McHappy day.

McHappy day is a one-day fundraising initiative which raises money to support local children’s charities.

In Strathmore $1 from every McMuffin, Big Mac, and Happy Meal was donated to the Ronald McDonald House in southern Alberta and the local Community Crisis Society.

Between the McCarnival and McHappy day $5,658 was raised for the two chari-ties. The money will be split 50/50 be-tween them.

“That’s fabulous,” said Laura Bakken who works for the crisis society.

Karen Pease, the executive director of the Community Crisis Society, was excited by the news.

“That’s fantastic,” said Pease, “that’s re-ally going to enhance the experiences for the kids staying at the shelter and make things a little brighter and fun.”

The Crisis Society plans to use the mon-ey to take families to the Calgary Zoo, Calaway Park, the Science Centre and other places where they might not get the chance to go without the help of the com-munity.

The restaurants raised funds by selling Ronald’s red shoes for $2 each, shirts; pins and the employees could donate an hour of their wages.

Members of the community also volun-teered their time to help the restaurants.

Mayor George Lattery, along with coun-cil members Lois Wegener, Brad Walls and Bob Sobol, attended McHappy day to show their support.

“We sold tickets and pins, it was a lot of fun,” said Wegner.

This is not the only good news the crisis society has had lately. On April 28, Boston Pizza hosted a fashion show to raise funds for the shelter.

McHappy day a success

Election time will go smoother this year than it has in past years at least, for the ballot counters, that is.

In previous years voting was done with paper ballots tucked into a box and counted at the end of the night. Betty Gaskarth, municipal clerk for the town of Strathmore was one of the unfortu-nate who had to stay and count the bal-lots, sometimes staying until 3 a.m.

“It’s a long process to complete and last time we had a lot of candidates on the ballot and so it’s a lot of counting,” said Gaskarth.

The Town will now be using an auto-mated voting system and the machine which counts the votes is similar to a scanner.

The ballot will have whoever is run-ning for mayor on it, whoever is running for councillor in another section and the third and fourth sections will be for the school divisions and whoever is running for the positions there.

“People will take these and you would give them what is called a secre-cy sleeve, then they would mark the bal-lots, and then put them in the secrecy

sleeve and then bring it back, and then it is run through the scanner,” said Gas-karth.

Voters will fill in the bubbles or mark them with an X. The ballot will be an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper and it can be dou-ble sided if there are a lot of candidates.

“The scanner will also pick up if there are any errors on it, that sort of thing, and then they have an opportunity to correct those errors at that point,” said Gaskarth.

“I personally have never voted at one of these machines so I’m going by what I have read. A lot of other municipali-ties use them and then at the end of the night there’s a memory card that comes out of it and it goes into a machine that brings up all the results.”

She had also considered a touch screen voting system, but had concerns if there were to be a recount, and felt more comfortable with this system.

It was a unanimous decision by coun-cil to put Bylaw 10-10 into place for the new voting system.

“I just have to say it’s good the girls won’t have to be here until 3 a.m.,” said Councillor Earl Best.

The next municipal election is on Oc-tober 18.

The inter faith dia-logue took place on Sunday May 9. It was a meeting between the Christian com-munity and the Ah-madiyya Muslim com-munity from Calgary. The Strathmore United church provided the space for the two reli-gious groups to meet.

Over 100 people at-tended the event in-cluding council mem-bers Brad Walls and Lois Wegener.

The Amadiyya com-munity provided the refreshments for the fellowship, which took place after the dialogue.

The event far sur-passed the expectations of Rev. Paula Ashby.

“There was a really good cross section of our community,” said Ashby.

Both MP Kevin So-

renson, and MLA Arno Doerkson sent letters on their behalf, which Ashby read aloud to the crowd before begin-ning the dialogue.

After the letters were read, both Council-lor Walls and Wegener stood up and spoke to the crowd.

“There was quite an applause for them,” said Ashby.

After the dialogue Ashby walked around and spoke to the peo-ple she didn’t know.

“I was just delighted to see there were peo-ple from three other congregations in atten-dance. There was also a good representation of people who are not affiliated with a congre-gation.”

Rev. Jane Rowland spoke at the event and found the event was “well supported and thoroughly enjoyed it.”

“I really enjoyed

hearing the other per-spective. It was a very enlightening experi-ence to share in that process of explaining ones faith,” said Row-land.

“We both believe that the purpose of life is to be following God. I would summarize it as ‘love God, love your neighbour, and they would put it as ‘wor-ship God, and serve your neighbour’.”

“It’s the same thing, but the differences are what makes us Chris-tian or Muslim,” said Rowland.

The feedback was good and there were numerous requests for the United Church to make the dialogue an annual event.

There will be a no-tice in the church bul-letin next month asking members if they would like to see the dialogue hosted again next year.

the town of strathmore is pleased to announce the approval of its annexation of 18.5 quarter sections of land.

the annexation process, which has been ongoing for a number of years, culminated in a hearing before the municipal Government Board in June of 2009. Based on the Board’s recommendation, an order in council was issued on april 29, 2010, effective January 1, 2010.

To the EditorJust want to thank whomever took the trouble last

Friday night to snap the mirror off my car. Real nice! Not for profit or personal gain, just pure

vandalism. Hope you enjoyed it and it makes you feel big

and manly. Will cost me fair amount to fix it. So glad you choose to live in my town. Truly hope someone returns the favour to you.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report

The 45th Annual National Prayer Breakfast was held in Ottawa on May 11. During the week of the Prayer Breakfast, Parliament Hill welcomed over 800 guests and delegates from all religious de-nominations to the Prayer Break-fast itself; the Monday evening Leadership Dinner; the annual Leadership Seminar; and the Na-tional Student Forum. The mission of the National Prayer Breakfast was to invite leaders to meet in the spirit of Jesus Christ in order to pray together.

At the heart of the National Prayer Breakfast was a small group of Parliamentarians from differ-ent political parties who meet for breakfast each Wednesday morn-ing while Parliament is in session. The annual National Prayer Break-fast was more visible, but the weekly meetings were far more significant. The weekly meetings provide opportunities for deeper friendships to flourish and grow, across party lines.

For many of us, from all parties

in the House of Commons, the National Prayer Breakfast is a mo-ment that challenges all of us to a higher calling. It is a special time for Parliamentarians as it brings to our attention the spiritual nature of our work on behalf of Canadi-ans of all religions. Congregating such a large number of religious ambassadors at the centre of our country’s political power is a very thought provoking and meaning-ful experience.

Many of us feel that spiritual matters and our faith are not ‘best hidden away inside a building’ but shared and celebrated throughout our day to day lives. During count-less ceremonies and proceedings of the House of Commons it is the spiritual implications that gives special meaning to these tradi-tions.

In Canada, our Aboriginal people have always been very up-front when it comes to their spirituality. Our aboriginal com-munity regularly and routinely has a public and spiritual component to their meetings and ceremonies. Their ancient traditions and ours recognize Something and Some-one greater than ourselves.

The people leading the National Prayer Breakfast ask for strength and wisdom for the leaders of our country. They appeal to audienc-es to be steadfast in support and prayer, because there will be both good and bad times to come. They request protection and guidance.

I pray that our federal govern-ment will accomplish many, many good and wonderful things for Canada. I am grateful and proud that in our free nation the ceremo-nies we conduct can show in dif-ferent ways that it is alright to rec-ognize that there is a spiritual side to life. It reminds us that none of us are perfect in our own strength and that leaning upon our faith we have the promise that we can realize our full potential. I trust and hope that we are not only re-minded of that during the National Prayer Breakfast, but throughout the year as well.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previ-ous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Al-berta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail [email protected].

The school honors approximately forty students twice a year. This group was a worthy bunch, and they enjoyed a nice breakfast with their teachers and school mates. it is important to let these students know that they make a difference and that the school, teachers and classmates appreciate them. To the EditorStreet sweeping is in full effect in Strathmore and

the bylaw officers and tow trucks must be working overtime. Conflicting signs, poor communication and short notice has this 10-year resident disappointed.

On April 23, my wife answered the door to an officer stating her truck was about to be towed while another officer was writing up a ticket. My wife was frustrated and when she tried to explain that we had no off road parking she was told she should have parked in anoth-er neighbourhood and our street was a “highway”...?

A very large sign posted on a corner read “Please... try to move your vehicles...” has been moved to an-other neighbourhood and the “try to” has been painted over. When I mentioned this to the Senior Bylaw Of-ficer he said yes, he had the signs changed, but they weren’t the legal signs (the smaller sandwich boards must be the legal ones).

When I asked if there was any communications sent out he said no, it was the law and people have been

getting away breaking it. Since we have no off road parking, I was told in previous years by the Town Office that I could sweep up where our vehicles are parked. The Senior Bylaw Officer said he could not speak to what I was told by the Town Office in the past. We are wondering what people on holidays, folks sick in bed or even those at home for a few days that didn’t have a chance to see the signs felt when their vehicles were all of a sudden gone. This hasn’t been an issue in the past and all of a sudden vehicles are being towed? I wonder how many others were told not to worry about being towed only to find their cars gone this year.

I understand that to keep our small town clean and safe the roads need to be swept. I am just disappointed with the absence of communications and conflicting information. I guess I now wait for my summons to go to court.

“Pet of the Week!”

What to do if your dog has mats?

It is important to have the mat removed as it will pull on your pet’s skin and cause irritation. When you encounter a mat try to separate the fur with your fingers. If you have coat detangler or conditioner, you can spray it on the mat to help loosen the fur. Do not use scissors on the mat as you cannot always see the skin, and you could cut your dog. If you are uncomfortable, take your pet to a professional groomer. He or She will have the proper tools to remove the mats with minimal discomfort to your pet. Be prepared though if your pet has multiple mats, the groomer may have to “shave” your pet causing a drastic change to his/her appearance.

Break & Enter and Missing Puppy

Darts for charitySaturday, May 1st, the Legion held its annual Shoot For The Troops fund raiser dart event.  There were 78 players and 26 teams in all.  The Drumhell-er team walked away with the championship.  It was a HUGE success.  Dart players from several Legions in the area came to play and contribute.  Pictured here (l-r): Bruce Westgard, Audra deMolitor (MFRC), Betty Ann Fountain, Jenny Schumann and Guy Knappe. Schumann (Legion president) presented a cheque for $2,460 to Audra deMolitor representing Calgary Military Family Resource Centre.  The mon-ey will help fund support groups such as the De-ployment Service support program.  This program helps families deal with emotions and situations that arise when family members are deployed, and what to watch for when they return, among other very im-portant information.  For further information on this cause please check out their website  www.CAL-GARYMFRC.ca.

When we pull up in front of our homes, we want to see an attractive and welcoming composition of home and landscape in harmony.

Curb appeal starts with a solid framework that looks good regardless if the plants are in leaf or not. Trees, shrubs and built items are the frame-work that keeps their shape through fall and winter. Therefore provide year around interest.

Plants that have more than one season of interest is another way to extend the appeal. Plants that not only flower but also have interesting bark, beautiful fall colour, interesting berries and fruit to attract birds are all features that add interest to your landscape.

The shapes of plants can also high-light an area. This is effective even in winter and some of the contrasting shapes that complement one another are:

Tall and narrow with oval or round Upright with weeping or Group 3 shrubs of the same shape

together for more impactChoosing plants that suit the site is

an important step in planning a wel-coming and attractive front entrance. Knowing your site conditions is information that will help you choose plants that will like or easily adapt to the conditions in your yard. Being aware of low spots, which may stay wet longer, windy locations, full sun or shade, each of these environmental conditions will direct you to plants that will not only survive but also thrive. Beautifying your home all year through.

As an example wet areas would be unsuitable for Elm, Hawthorn, Moun-tain Ash, or Pine trees. Hot, dry and or windy locations are unsuitable for Amur Cherry, Birch, Cedar, Trembling Aspen and White Spruce trees.

Some key points to consider when assessing your homes curb appeal:

Keep the front door visiblePlan for as wide a walkway as

possible from parking area to your front door

Keep all things in scale – built forms, trees, shrubs and garden bed size

Keep hard and soft landscaping components in balance

Foot traffic patternsSnow removal Loading and unloadingFollowing the planning and install-

ing of the framework the decorations and details are next. The list of design elements that follow were already at work as you have envisioned and

developed your framework.Repetition–gives a cohesive look to

a garden suggested by repeating plants or colours and or hard landscaping materials.

Variety is using contrasting shapes, foliage size and colour to instil interest. Too little and its boring and too much it’s busy, this distracts the observer as they don’ know where to look.

Texture refers to the feel or perceived feel of the items in the landscape. Elicits a real emotional response. Contrasting plants that have shiny leaves with dull leaves. A furry leaf with smooth ones is a way to treat this design element.

Colour is what we see first when we stop somewhere. Warm colours such as red, yellow and orange advance in the sunlight so appear boldly in the light of day and recede at dusk. The cool colours such as blue, lavender, and pink recede in the bright light of the sun to advance at dusk and bring light to dark corners and shaded areas. Silver/grey or green foliage plants can be used as buffers plants between changing colour schemes. White enhances the colour of whatever is planted next to it. Variegated foliage adds interest and will light up shaded corners. Red needs to be used spar-ingly such as a focal point rather than a whole colour scheme. It is an intense colour and not restful for the eye.

Lastly we have whimsy the personal touch that says the garden is a reflection of you. This could be a welcome sign, a rock with your house number that you have painted on, statuary, water feature anything really. Whimsy is always best when added in moderation.

Your annual pots can be used for fall arrangements, to extend their usefulness. These arrangements are limited only by your imagination. Leave the soil in your container, it provides an excellent base to stick your arrangements in. Keep the dried flowers; seed heads and colourful branches and silks in scale with the pot and its location. Keep materials in harmony with your landscape and the greater surrounding area. By this I mean use local materials over anything from tropical climates.

To further extend the pots useful-ness create a winter arrangement. Many nurseries and florists have evergreen bows available in December for creating a seasonal arrangement for this, what seems the longest of our seasons.

Looking to punch up the aesthetic value of your yard? Try adding an inviting stone patio, pathway or border. Stone blends well with all architecture and landscape styles and is far more ap-pealing to the eye than boring, bland concrete.

Rocks and stone have been used

in landscapes for centuries. They add timeless style and enduring beauty. The longevity of the paving stones on the island of Crete, in place for thousands of years, speaks volumes about stone’s durability in a landscape.

Adding stone to a yard naturally enhances the beauty

of the landscape and brings balance between organic and inorganic materials.

Creating a stone path once required a large amount of time and sweat. Today stone hardscapes can be created quickly and easily. Check them out at your lo-cal lawn and garden retailer for more information.

The thought of adding a new stone walkway or patio can be overwhelm-ing. It can be tough to visualize what it will look like when it is finished.

Small splashes of stone can make a big statement when accenting existing structures.

A stone walking strip between a pool and existing con-crete patio creates a natural, elemental transition between the areas.

Rock your world with river stones

Gardening enthusiasts often toil for hours on end to achieve their masterpiece landscape. Whether they hire out for some pro-fessional help or handle all of the work them-

selves, the end desire is a place that can be a sanctuary and welcome

retreat.Though it’s hard to improve upon the beauty of Mother Nature, a few finishing touches to the yard can increase the enjoyment factor so

much more. Well placed decor items and furniture are a

growing trend in outdoor living.

Water FeaturesThe great outdoors seems to be

enhanced by the delicate sound of water. Water features can in-clude bird baths, whimsical water fountains, or elaborate waterfalls cascading into a pond. A fountain can be as simple as two water buck-ets and a pump that transfers water between them. Just remember if you are using a feature that has standing water, such as a birdbath, routinely change the water to prevent a breed-ing ground for mosquito and other larvae.

Outdoor FurnitureGone are the days of the generic

patio set and uncomfortable wire chairs. Today’s homeowners want their yards to reflect their personal

style and be an extension of inside living spaces. It’s common to find outdoor “rooms,” complete with comfortable and attractive outdoor furniture. From chaise lounges to sofas to love seats, these pieces are crafted from wood, metal or rattan and outfitted with weather-resistant fabric on the cushions. Coffee tables and decorative accents complete the picture.

Decorative PlantersGreat gardeners know that a mix

of plants and styles can bring variety to a landscape. Plants grown in beds interspersed with movable container plants allow a person to change the look of the yard on a whim. Ornate and decorous planters are part of creating drama in the yard. Skip the plastic, generic planters and look for stone, terra-cotta, ceramic, or even faux materials that look like the real thing. Here’s an interesting idea: Create a bench with planters and a piece of wood. Cut circles in the wood that are slightly smaller than the circumference of the plant-ers. Place the planters on either end directly below the holes and allow the shrubbery or other plants to grow through. Leave the center for a seat-ing area.

Garden decor provides the finishing touch

When the weather warms, homeowners often flock to their backyards to entertain, relax and enjoy the great outdoors. But oftentimes the work and maintenance that is involved with keeping a yard looking its best can negate the rejuvenating effects of spending time in an outdoor space.

Luckily, there are ways to cut down on the yard maintenance so you can free up more opportunities for sitting back and relaxing with friends and family. Consider these tips from By the Yard, Inc., manu-facturer of durable outdoor furniture made from recycled materials.

1. Choose native plants and perenni-als: Let’s face it, as rewarding a hobby as gardening can be, it does require an investment of time and energy. By choos-ing plants wisely, you can cut down on the number of plants that perish and need to be replanted, and you can also take a hands-off approach to gardening. Perenni-als will bloom each year and won’t have to be replanted every season. Fill your yard with many perennials and then add colorful annuals to flower pots and other containers to fill in the gaps with little effort.

2. Look for maintenance-free outdoor furniture: Who wants to spend season

after season scraping or painting outdoor furniture that hasn’t stood up against the weather? Many types of outdoor pieces have to be protected from the elements, including being covered or put away during nasty weather. That adds up to more of a headache than homeowners need. Milk helps build strong bones, and recycled milk jugs help build strong, maintenance-free furniture. The over 90 product designs from By the Yard (www.bytheyard.net) are made in the USA of High Density Polyetheylene (HDPE) from recycled milk containers and plastic water bottles. Unlike most other plastics, the material used to fabricate the furniture is considered color-fast. It will not fade more than 3 percent over a 10-year period. This is furniture you never have to replace or put away, rather simply enjoy all season long.

3. Invest in a sprinkler system:Watering a yard by hand can take a lot of time and may not be efficiently watering the lawn and plants. Sprinkler systems take the work out of watering by automatically deploy-ing at times programmed by you. This way you can schedule the sprinklers to turn on in the early morning, when you may have already left for work, often considered the

best time of the day for water penetration and prevention of evaporation. Sprinklers and drip irrigation systems come in many designs and can be custom-ized for your needs. When set up correctly, they can be an eco-friendly way of watering the landscape.

4. Consider lawn alternatives: A beauti-ful lawn may be a sight to behold, but for many homeowners the work involved, including sowing the seeds, fertilizing and mowing, make the final product bit-tersweet. Look to groundcovers, pavers, clover and other landscaping ideas to break up the amount of lawn in your landscape. If you have young children or pets who are notorious for wreaking havoc on a lawn, you may want to cut down your lawn ratio even further. If you have your heart set on rolling acres of pristine beauty, hire a ser-vice that can do the maintenance for you.

5. Think about how you use your outdoor space:Whether you like to sit outside and relax or are more into frequent entertain-ing, design your space around these factors. This way you don’t have furniture or other

yard accessories that interfere with your plans and require additional care. Also, look for items that can serve multiple purposes, such as bench-es that can hold planters but also be seating areas when there are more guests around. How about furniture that can be kept out all year long if you like to entertain outside no matter the season?

With a few simple tips you can spend less time working in the yard and more time enjoying it.

Nothing revives enthusiasm for gardening like a trip to Vancouver to see what Canada’s top garden design experts are up to. We had the opportunity to find out, when Eagle Lake Nurseries sent Renee O’Brien and I to the CanWest Show last September. Among the speakers was Paul Zammit, the Director of Horticulture for the Toronto Botanical Gardens. His presentation of his own home garden and his creative containers was inspiring. It changed my vision of what a gorgeous summer planter can be. He designs containers with a diverse group of plants combining annuals, perennials,

shrubs, herbs and vines. His concept of each planter he

designs begins with Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers. Thrillers give the container height and are not placed smack in the middle but rather towards the back or slightly off center. Fillers would be a mix of accent plants chosen for flowering, a wealth of foliage and fragrant herbs. Spillers trail and can also be woven back into the planter. Colours may be echoed through the container or match a colour in the garden using foliage or flower. These hues can also be repeated into the garden near where the planter will be placed.

Perennials and shrubs can be overwintered by planting them into the garden in the fall before the ground freezes. Tropical plants can be stored in a cool basement. The container planting can flow into Autumn by removing annuals and planting ornamental Kale or Cabbage. Use accessories for effect like branches, little pumpkins and gourds.

New Trends in Container Gardening

Pergolas, or archways in a yard or park made of a framework covered with trained climbing or trail-ing plants, have become a landscaping style of choice for discerning homeown-ers. Pergolas can take many shapes. However, the wooden structures of today, with thick crossbeams and massive height, have grown in popularity.

There are many advan-tages to pergolas apart from their aesthetic appeal. One of the most apparent is the shade they lend on hot, sunny days. Open beams al-low breezes to penetrate but also dapple the sunlight. The addition of trailing plants on

the pergola can provide even more shade.

Pergolas can be traced back to late Medieval and early Renaissance times. In fact, the word pergola origi-nates from the Late Latin term “pergula,” referring to a protective eave. Renais-sance gardens featured tunnels made out of climb-ing plants that were bound together to make archways. Other plants were trained to climb up slats that were added to further complete these natural tunnels. The tunnels stayed cool and shady, as well as dry during a rain shower. Thus, pergo-las were born.

Pergolas can add a cozy

atmosphere to outdoor spac-es. They can be built over a patio or as an overhang to a home. Some restaurants even use pergolas to create outdoor seating spaces that are somewhat protected from the elements.

Presently, wood is the pri-mary material of choice for building pergolas. However, composite vinyl products are also available. Pergola kits make the erection of the structure easier for the do-it-yourselfer or one who does not want to hire a carpenter.

Pergolas, like their cous-ins the arbors and trellises, can also provide privacy, particularly if they are draped with climbing plants.

You certainly want your lawn and garden to look beautiful, but far too often homeowners

succumb to making landscaping mistakes.

Here are some of the

more

common gaffes and how to remedy them.

1. Lawn ornament overkill: Putting too many lawn ornaments into your yard can take away from the natural beauty of the landscape. If you want to add a whimsical touch, stick with one or two instead of many.

2. Improper plant locations: The reason gar-den centers and nurseries put those care tags on plants is so that you will know how to care for the particular plant. You should take into consideration the proper sunlight and exposure your plants will need.

3. Scalping the lawn:It is not true that cut-ting your lawn short will mean less mowing. The lawn has different requirements through-out the year. In the cooler weather you can get away with cutting it shorter so that sunlight can penetrate the soil. In the summer, keep the blades longer to maximize water retention and promote soil shade.

4. Picking the wrong plants: Many people pick plants because they simply look good and not because they’ll be appropriate for their yard.

5. Thinking animals won’t bother your land-scape: Once you plant attractive and delicious flowering plants you could find your yard is

the new dining spot for a host of wildlife. In-tersperse bitter-tasting flowers with the sweet ones to deter deer. Birds, rabbits, squirrels and other animals may need barriers to keep them out.

6. Pruning willy-nilly: Many plants prosper when pruned. However, over-pruning or do-ing so the wrong way or at the wrong time can harm a plant. Learn the correct way from books or a gardening center. Otherwise, it could be better not to prune at all.

7. Too much color: A smattering of color here and there can be too much and distract-ing when your landscape is viewed. Instead, choose a color palette and stick with a few similar hues.

8. Forgetting the family: An ornate garden certainly looks pretty, but how practical is it for your way of life? If you have kids, you may have to think about how your property is used and plan your landscape around that.

9. Failing to be safe: Follow the recommen-dations and warnings on any tools you use for gardening. Always read the instructions and user’s manual.

10. Grab and go: It’s easy to want to buy everything you see at the garden center, but it’s better to go in with a plan and a shopping

list. Mixing and matching too many elements in your yard could look sloppy and not well thought out.

11. Poor maintenance: Garden beds gener-ally require weeding and tending once or twice a month. Make sure you have the time to take care of your landscape after you create it. Otherwise, find someone reliable whom you can hire to care for it.

12. Failing to budget: Gardening, just like any hobby, can cost money. Make a list of what you’re willing to spend and stick to it. Otherwise the bills can quickly escalate.

13. One-season landscape: Your landscape should grow and change with the weather. Plan for plantings that bloom or offer color all year round.

14. Forgetting the day-to-night transition: Of course you want your yard to look great during the day, but what about enjoying it at night? Make sure it is safe and plan for exte-rior illumination so that you can have many wonderful evenings under the stars.

15. No roadmap: You must have a plan for your landscape. Plot it out on paper, make a list of your materials and costs, run the idea by all those in the household and only then begin.

Varieties of Spreading Petunias

In business for over 40 years!

With the start of warmer weather many are turning to their lawns to pro-duce a green carpet to enhance their properties.

The tongue-in-cheek dialoage between God and St. Francis gives us something to think about.

GOD:Frank, you know

all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multi-ply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blos-soms attracts but-terflies, honey bees and flocks of song-birds. I expected to see a vast garden of colours by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles.

St. FRANCIS;It’s the tribes that

settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started call-ing your flowers ‘weeds’ and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

GOD:Grass? But, it’s

so boring. It’s not colourful. It doesn’t attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It’s sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?

ST. FRANCIS:Apparently so,

Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poison-ing any other plant that crops up in the lawn.

GOD:The spring rains

and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.

ST. FRANCIS:Apparently not,

Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week.

GOD:They cut it? Do

they then bail it like hay?

ST. FRANCIS:Not exactly, Lord.

Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.

GOD:

They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?

ST. FRANCIS:No, Sir, just the

opposite. They pay to throw it away.

GOD:Now, let me get

this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

ST. FRANCIS:Yes, Sir.

GOD:These Suburban-

ites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.

ST. FRANCIS:You aren’t going

to believe this, Lord.

When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

GOD:What nonsense.

At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It’s a natural cycle of life.

ST. FRANCIS:You better sit

down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake

them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

GOD:No. What do they

do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?

ST. FRANCIS:After throwing

away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

GOD:And where do

they get this mulch?

ST. FRANCIS:They cut down

trees and grind

them up to make the mulch.

GOD:Enough! I don’t

want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you’re in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

ST. CATH-ERINE:

‘Dumb and Dumber’, Lord. It’s a story about....

GOD:Never mind, I

think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.

God’s thoughts on lawns Grounds to go gardenA cup of coffee enjoyed in the garden

can make for a relaxing morning. However, that java can also be a pick-me-up for your landscape.

Coffee and tea byproducts can be used in and around the garden to act as a slow-release fertilizer and a main component of compost.

Consider these uses for grounds.* Add to compost piles (filters and all)

along with tea bags to make an all-natural, rich source of energy for plants.

* Dilute with water to make a fast-acting fertilizer.

* Use in soil for houseplants or in veg-etable beds.

* Some people believe that coffee grounds can help repel pests, such as snails and slugs.

* If your garden needs more nitrogen, definitely turn to coffee. Nitrogen is essen-tial for plant leaf development.

* Plants that thrive in acidic soil, such as pines, evergreens, blueberries, rasp-berries, roses, azaleas, gardenias, ferns, rhododendrons, lily-of-the-valley, and even marigolds, can benefit from coffee grounds which slightly lower the pH of the soil.

* Feed the coffee grounds to garden worms. It seems they love to consume them. Worm excrement in the garden is beneficial, as is the aeration provided by tunnelling worms.

Every year the Drumheller Rotary Club nominates two people for the citizen of the year award. This year’s fi-nalists were Heather Colberg and Rita Pallesen.

Heather Colberg puts a lot of time into the community, helping with the Salvation Army and raising food for the food bank. Once a year Colberg does a ‘stuff the bus’ campaign, where she gets the community to join her in stuff-ing two buses full of food for the food bank. She also does a door-to-door an-nual food drive in November.

Rita Pallesen is well known in the Dalum and Drumheller communities. Pallesen has been a volunteer at the Drumheller Health Centre for the past 17 years, helping with the continuing care patients.

Leo Jensen, a member of the rotary club nominated Pallesen for the citizen of the year award.

“She’s just so deserving of this award. She puts countless hours in and loves to do it,” said Jensen.

The Rotary Club used to work in con-junction with the town of Drumheller, but this year hosted their own awards

night. Pallesen was one of the 2 final-ists. Two people were also nominated for courteous employee awards.

“I guess someone felt that I had been volunteering quite a bit through-out the years. I’m in shock, I never expect-ed anything like this, and I questioned it when he called to tell me,” said Pal-lesen.

She has been a member of the Da-lum friendship club since 1976. It’s a local ladies club in Dallum which raises money for charities with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the charity. The friendship club make quilts and nightgowns for the Community Crisis Society in Strathmore. She also spends a lot of time helping out the Dalum Lu-theran Church, playing the organ.

“She is just unbelievable, she checks on everybody. If somebody is sick she’ s checking on them, asking them how they are doing, whether it’s an opera-tion or they just aren’t feeling well. She is always just trying to cheer up people,” said Jensen. “The judges said it was a really hard decision,” said Jensen.

Colberg found out she had won the award on Saturday May 8.

“I was very grateful, but I think Rita should have gotten it. I’m honoured,” said Colberg.

The missionary group Rainbow of Promise went to Trinity Lutheran Chris-tian Academy to share their experiences with the schools.

They put on a skit for the school, and sang songs, getting the kids to partici-pate in the songs.

“They contacted us and said they were visiting the Hope church and wanted to know if we would be inter-ested in them coming over,” said Harold Warr, principal of Trinity Academy.

The group has spent the last three months in South India.

“It was amazing, everything over there is just so different,” said Justin Murray, who is from Minnesota.

He said people over there were very receptive, and more than willing to open their door and invite the group in for dinner.

“I would like to go back to see the Taj Mahal, we came close to seeing it but not close enough,” said Murray.

The group had not met each other before they started their training. Each

had applied through the organization ‘the youth encounter’ and went through an application process. Aafter they were accepted they met in person for the first time. Each member of the group lives in a different place across the U.S., and has signed up for a year of missionary work.

Allison Torbit, from Maryland, has done missionary work in the past. Last year she travelled Canada and the U.S.

“I plan to do a lot more of it,” said Torbit.

Christa Gaffer has done missionary trips through college and has realized it is something she would like to do for the rest of her life.

“I feel like maybe this is something I’d like to do for the rest of my life. I’m con-sidering another team who is going to Peru and Bolivia next year and I would like to join them,” said Gaffer.

The trips are paid for through grants and sponsors. It is up to the members of the team to find family and friends to help support and sponsor them on their travels. To find out more about joining a missionary go to www.youthencounter.org.

The Strathmore Figure Skating Club hosted its first awards banquet on Thursday May 6. The entire club and their families joined together at the Civic Centre for dinner followed by awards. Dinner began at 5:30, and the awards c e r e m o n y

took place at 6:30. Every girl in the club received an award.

“We’ve got a few who will receive a ‘most improved’, but it’s mostly about personality,” said Leanne Woodcock, one of the coaches.

Some of the girls in the club have volunteered their time, helping out once or twice a week with the CanSkate program. Woodcock wanted everyone to walk away with something, because she did not want anyone to feel left out.

Donella Swan has been with the skate club since 1997. She received an award for being the most commit-ted. This is her last year with the club. Some of the other awards handed

out were for best attitude, smile and sparkle, and what a charmer.

Friday was test day for the skate club. Judges came in from Skate Canada to evalu-ate the girls. Sasha Sandmaier tested for the junior bronze.

“I passed testing, it went re-ally well,” said Sandmaier. Of the 17 girls who tested, every-one, except one who missed one part, passed their test. The test was different for each of the girls. It was dependent upon their level of experi-ence. Some of the girls have recently learned new dances, and others had been working on their skills for a year. The club currently has 27 mem-bers, and many of them prac-tice year round.

Skate club hosts awards banquet

The figuring skating club hosted an awards ban-quet on May 6. Dinner

was followed by every girl in the club being given a certificate on what stood out about their personality. On May 7, 17 out of the 27 club members tested. The girls were tested for a variety of dif-ferent things depending on their skill levels. Dance instructor Rob Mullaney (above) taught some of the girl’s new moves. Shannon LeClair Photos

The Strathmore Spar-tans high school soccer team fell to 2-1 on the season with a 5-2 loss to Holy Trinity Acade-my, from Okotoks, May 10.

“We played about 15 minutes where we were caught chasing them and they got a couple goals on us,” said assistant coach Wes Clark.

“We also had a disal-lowed goal and missed an open net.

“The game was ac-tually closer than the score.”

“I think they are a very good team,” said onlooker Roger Gilbert.

Derek Warrack scored the first goal of the game and captain Ben Skuter scored the second.
