High winds, power outages and 21 motor vehicle accidents is what Strathmore residents faced Thurs-day April 29.

A spring snow-storm blew into town late Wednesday causing many people to take a snow day.

At the peak of the storm more than 30,000 Fortis Alberta custom-ers were out of power, from south of Red Deer all the way to the Al-berta/Montana border.

Near the end of the day nearly 13,000 customers still did not have power, and by the end of the day 2,500 customers were still without power over night.

“Our biggest challenge has been threefold, one the heavy wet snow in combination with the high winds which wrecked havoc on our lines and poles and distribution system, restorations efforts were hampered given unsafe road conditions mak-ing it unsafe for our power line technicians. That coupled with problems Altalink was having with their transmission system caused numerous challenges for us,” said Jennifer MacGowan with Fortis Al-berta.

“We certainly had some challeng-es regarding some substations and some lines that were affected by the storm that came through,” said Scott Thon with Alta Link.

“There was still some damage but with the help of Fortis and some of the other folks we were able to

make sure that most people from the transmission side have their power,” said Thon.

The Town of Strathmore had road crews out at 6:30 a.m. and when the roadways became a hazard they were shut down.

“The equipment we have avail-able is always there for snow re-moval and we try to be very proac-tive when we have an accumulation of snow and impairment to the roadways,” said Dennis Arnold with the Town of Strathmore.

“Snow removal is an ongoing thing whether it is spring, fall or the winter months. If the streets are impassible its still an ongoing thing whether it’s in the budget or not we still have to maintain the roadways.”

The storm didn’t affect local busi-nesses in the way one might have expected. The highway was closed but that didn’t stop people from go-ing out in town. Many people were not able to make it into the city for work.

Rocky Blokland owner of Rocky’s Bakery said the storm was not as bad as the one which hit Town April 14.

“Ironically the people that work in the city sat in my coffee shop,” said Blokland.

“We were still fairly busy, it didn’t hold too many people up,” said Bonnie Muir who works at the Val-ue Drug Mart.

The hardest hit areas were the High River area, west along the foot-hills east of Airdrie and south of Le-thbridge in the Cardston area.

Despite the storm which blew into town Wed., April 28, the Business Vitality Initiative, BVI, held its assessment meeting.

Of the 30 people expected to show up, 25 attended the meet-ing despite the storm.

“We were quite pleased with the 25 people who were able to come out, and we thank them for their participation in the evening,” said Jennifer Brooks, from Community Futures Wild Rose.

It was an assessment meeting and the focus was on the vital-ity of Strathmore and its busi-nesses.

“With Strathmore being poised for a lot of development we want to engage the commu-nity so that they are involved in the decision making as well, and in regards to what makes Strathmore a good place to live and work,” said Brooks.

BVI is looking for guidance from community residents and from people connected with the community. Some of the things being looked at are communi-ties and attitudes, way of life, education and training, innova-tion, leadership, infrastructure and business.

“Those are some of the focus areas and based on how people responded to that, the informa-tion will be summarized and presented back to the commu-nity and we can sort of decide on where to go from there,” said Brooks.

BVI’s focus is to allow resi-dents the chance to have a say in their community and take part in developing it further. $10,000 in seed money has been made available to go toward the local initiative.

“Everyday citizens can af-fect the everyday development of their community and that is something that we certainly want to stress and promote

through the Business Vitality Initiative.”

Marcy Field, of the Wheatland Business Women, was pleased with the number of people who were able to still attend the meeting in spite of the storm.

“I think it was really good participation and really good representatives from a lot of people in the business commu-nity in Strathmore. It will be in-teresting to see what they say,” said Field.

The second meeting is a fo-cus and action meeting where residents will determine the best course of action based on the information that came out of the assessment meeting. It is open to the entire communi-ty and will take place in about four weeks time.

For anyone who still wants to participate in the survey, there are hardcopies available at the Community Futures office. They must be returned by Friday, May 7.

May 8th is V-E Day, (Victory in Europe Day) commemorates the end of fighting

in Europe during World War 11. After years of war, The Third Reich of Nazi Germany was defeated.

Did you know the original planned date for the celebration of V-E Day was May 9th, 1945, but journalists caught wind

of the plans, so they moved the date up by a day.

The new ladder truck was chris-tened Sunday, May 2. The ladder extends up to 105 ft, and there are ex-tra features on the truck that most will not have.

Sunday May 2., the Strathmore Fire Department christened its newest addition to the fleet.

The Town of Strathmore need-ed a new ladder truck after the old one broke down.

Town council gave the fire de-partment permission to buy a used ladder truck but the bud-get was $600,000. Three months went by and the department was not able to find anything in the price range.

“One of the dealerships came to us and said ‘ok, we’ll give you a very special deal on a very

special ladder truck’,” said Muir Furzer, Fire Chief.

“We were able to buy it basi-cally right off the assembly line.”

The new ladder truck, which was used as a demo, came from Appleton, New York, and cost $670,000.

“It has a lot of features on it you wouldn’t see on a basic lad-der truck,” said Furzer, “Things like airbags, electric locks, heat-ed mirrors, that sort of things.”

Because the trucks are so big and expensive a lot of fire halls don’t have it in the budget to add some features and will cut out what isn’t necessary.

The ladder is 105 ft and the

hose is located up the middle of it, instead of the firefighters having to carry the hose up the ladder. The nozzle also rotates, circularly and horizontally, the ladder rotates 360 degrees.

Patricia Nyberg had the plea-sure of going in the bucket at the top of the ladder, “It was pretty incredible actually.”

“You hardly felt movement, when up there, and it was windy. I thought it was going to be like a rollercoaster experi-ence, but there was hardly any movement,” said Nyberg.

The next replacement the fire department is planning will be a rescue truck in 2013.

When Can You Retire? If you’re still in the work force, eventually, you’re

going to ask yourself: “When can I retire?”To answer this question, you’ll need to take

three steps.First, you’ll have to identify your potential

sources of retirement income, such as the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security and other government programs, as well as a workplace pension if you have one. You’ll also need to consider your personal savings, such as your RRSP or TFSA.

Your second step is to determine if a gap exists between the income you can count on during retirement and the money you’ll need to support your retirement lifestyle. A professional financial advisor can help you make this calculation.

Your final step is to decide how to close any retirement gap. Unless you want to delay your retirement, or scale down your retirement lifestyle, you may need to contribute more to your RRSP and other investment accounts. You also should consider working with a financial advisor to choose the appropriate mix of investments to help your money grow over time.

But in any case, don’t wait too long before you tackle the “When can I retire?” question - because the sooner you start working on it, the better the answer you’ll get.

Boston Pizza held their first annual fash-ion show to raise aware-ness and money for the women’s shelter on Wed. April 28.

Laurie Shannon, gen-eral manager of Boston Pizza wanted to help the shelter by raising money for them.

Together with her staff, she created the idea of the Boston Pizza fund-raising gala, and invited local talent and busi-nesses to partake in it.

“Everyone has really jumped on board. The staff that are attending, including myself, will ac-tually purchase tickets to go to our own event, to make sure we’re raising as much as we can,” said Shannon.

Tickets were on sale for $20 each, with all of the proceeds going di-rectly to the shelter. The show started at 7 p.m. and there were 45 peo-ple in attendance.

The local sponsors were Warehouse One, Reitmans, Ripperz, Ar-dene and Home Hard-

ware. The event raised $900

for the Wheatland shel-ter. The shelter has been open for 17 years and last year alone they helped 174 adults and 133 children.

Graydon Pease was the MC for the night and Jordon Olstrom provid-ed the entertainment.

Karen Pease, executive director for the Commu-nity Crisis Society was pleased when she heard what Shannon was plan-ning to do for them.

“To pick our shelter to showcase and do some-thing special for, we are very grateful. We were also impressed with the local talent, I thought that was excellent, and the businesses, all the work that the vendors did.”

Businesses like Mary Kay, Party Light and a few others donated a portion of their earnings to the shelter.

“A fashion show is no easy task to organize, and I was really im-pressed with the quality and effort that the local businesses put into it,” said Karen.

FEEDING YOUR PUPPYYour puppy is growing fast. He needs (and has) a lot of energy. it’s important that you serve him food specially formulated for his stage of life.

once you get your puppy started on a balanced and complete diet, you shouldn’t switch unless advised by a veterinarian – it may cause him to experience digestive problems. if you are switching brands, please allow seven to ten days to ease the transition from your puppy’s current food. each day, simply feed a little less of the current food and a little more of the new food, until you’re feeding the new food exclusively. also follow your vet’s instructions on how long to keep him on puppy food. most breeds appear nearly full-grown at 6 months, yet their insides are still developing. Some large breed puppies may need to remain on special puppy diets for up to two years.

Understanding your puppy’s nutritional needs can help you make smart feeding decisions. of course, always consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions.

Do you have a special recipe you would like to share? Please submit to the Strathmore Times by Friday noon. Fax Tracey 403.934.5546 or email [email protected]

May is motorcycle awareness month. Every year accidents, sometimes fatal, are caused by careless drivers not noticing the return of bikes on the road. Please take care to notice the motorcycle behind you. Don’t throw you ciga-rette butts out the window or litter when someone is behind you on their bike. These are things that shouldn’t be done anyway, but they can be a major hazard and risk to motorcyclists.

It’s that time of the year to put the motorcycle back on the road. As I ride off I remember to adhere to the letter of the Highway Traffic Act, lest any infraction, no matter how trifling, will permit my insur-ance company yet another asinine reason to extort higher premiums.

After paying this year’s ransom for insurance and $42 for the li-cense plate sticker, I’m riding down the road fully aware of my surroundings. Approaching an in-tersection I notice a car driven by an older fellow coming towards me. I attempt to second-guess his intentions. Looks like he’ll be turn-ing left once I’m by him. His turn signal isn’t on; maybe he doesn’t know how to use it. My headlight

is on. I cover the brake lever and pedal and slow down just a bit by habit. I’m ready.

We make eye contact, as I’m about to enter the intersection. He grins, he turns. I brake and coun-ter steer to my left. Missed him by inches. My luck coupled with years of motorcycling experience has kept me alive for another day. He’s probably someone out to prove that motorcycles are danger-ous. They are when people turn left directly in front of them.

Further on I come upon a funer-al procession of vehicles held up by an aged motor home towing an overloaded trailer loaded with an oversized powerboat. A couple of status symbols hogging the road. Unable to pass, I’m at a safe fol-lowing distance from the car in front of me while dodging beer caps and cigarette butts emanating from it.

Soon I have a car behind me. It’s one of those foreign makes not equipped with signal lights favored by the yuppies of today. This one is driven by a young woman with that trendy look. But there’s something wrong here. Though the speedometer says 40 mph she’s about six feet astern my taillight.

Doesn’t she realize my brakes and reflexes are better than hers?

If I have to stop, that car of hers will have a new hood ornament. While attempting to flag her back I get the one finger salute as she passes me. How she got by me while staying mostly in our lane is not hard to believe as her mirror just clips the end off my handle-bar. Once in front of me she shows whose queen of the road by floor-ing her brake pedal.

Since she looks and drives like she’s under the influence of some-thing I note the plate number, col-or and make of the car.

I ride over to the local police station to file a complaint. Once there I’m interrogated. Was there an accident? No. Well, move along or you will be charged under some imaginary infraction. Like a good Canadian, I move along.

Later while trying to forget about the previous events of the day I’m pulled over by the police. With the siren wailing and lights flashing I’m forced on to the soft shoulder nearly dumping the bike. No charges, just checking. The of-ficer of the law pulls over all mo-torcycles whether warranted or not for questioning. When I inform the officer that this is unjust I’m told that if I don’t like it to quit riding motorcycles.

Discrimination is alive and well in Canada if you ride a motorcycle.

The Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squads, RCACS, competed this past weekend to see who would take first place in the Southern Alberta Zones.

The event takes place once a year and this year there were 240 cadets from Calgary and area. Each team is made up of 15 cadets and one commander. The cadets range from age 12 to 18.

Saturday was the sports part of the zones competition, which was played on a rotational basis, with eight teams participating.

The cadets played both basketball and volleyball. The basketball game was played in two 15-minute halves and vol-leyball was a straight 35-minute game.

Sunday was a little more competi-tive with five teams competing in the compulsory drill portion, where a set of commands is called and the cadets fol-low.

Strathmore RCACS 903 were one of the five teams taking part in Sunday’s drill.

“The last two years we won first place so we’re trying to keep that,” said com-manding officer Cpt. T. Cormier, for 903 Strathmore.

After the compulsory drill, three teams head into the precision drill por-tion. The cadets from the three teams did a three to four minute routine, which they did from memory and with no commands.

Before entering the arena cadets are first marked on their appearance and uniforms. They are then scored on their performance.

“It’s going good, things are working out really well,” said Cpt. Boyd Rideout.

The top score for sports went to 781 RCACS Calgary, and top sportsmanship went to 52 RCACS Calgary. For the compulsory drill 604 and 781 RCACS in Calgary won first and second place with Strathmore 903 placing third. Calgary teams also took first and second in the precision drill with Strathmore placing third again.

Flight Sgt. Philip Wahl, 903 RCACS, was the cadet with the best uniform overall.

It’s almost time to dust off your cowboy hats and pull on your boots.

The 38th annual Alberta High School Rodeo will be at the rodeo grounds May 22 and 23.

Students grade 9 to 12 will be taking part in events similar to the main rodeo.

“The young cowboys and young cowgirls basi-cally take part in the team roping events,” said Dan Dowler from the Alberta High School Rodeo.

Myrna Johnson’s twins are members of the High School Rodeo Association. This is her sons first-year and her daughters second.

“We are trying to get a few more kids involved,” said Johnson.

Strathmore is a part of district one and they will host one to 12 different rodeo events during the high school

rodeo season. Points from each of these rodeos

accumulate and the top eight contes-tants from each district will go on to compete in the finals.

“Once you go into the provincial fi-nals you can actually get the chance to go to the national finals and you

can have the chance to get to go down to the States,” said Dowler.

The rodeo is funded 100 per cent through do-nations and sponsorship from town businesses and through the fees collected from contestants.

Any level of talent can participate and “It’s basi-cally to support the mem-bers and the club itself can help the kids go to attend some rodeo schools and hone in on some of their skills,” said Dowler.

In order to participate in the Rodeo, a membership with the Al-berta High School Rodeo Association is needed.

Strathmore firefighters spent a week at the Indianapolis Convention Centre for the Fire Department Instructors Confer-ence, FDIC.

For 80 years, FDIC has had one mission: to train the fire service. This year 30,000 firefighters attended the conference, and over 70 per cent of them are volunteers.

This was the third year the Strathmore Fire Department sent people down to at-tend. It was Terry Desserre’s third year, Jeff Karkut’s second and Doug Reid’s first year.

One trip was paid through Fire Within. The training division with the fire depart-ment sent the other two firefighters.

“It was outstanding, there were two days of H.O.T training, which is hands-on training, and the rest of the days were three days of conferences,” said Desserre.

“We got a lot of experience and insight,” said Karkut.

The conference trains the firefighters in all new basic tactics which are coming up all over North America. Firefighters from

South America and Europe also attended the event this year. Desserre doubts there were even 1,000 people in attendance from Canada.

“It’s all being taught by departments like New York, Chicago, Boston, that’s where all the instructors come out of.”

A lot of the new protocols and equip-ment the fire department uses are based on knowledge gathered from attending the FDIC, which they implemented here.

“Everything from little hand tools to trucks were there,” said Karkut.

“It’s an outstanding training conference for the guys here, to bring that stuff back and then implement it here is great,” said Desserres.

There are 32 firefighters in Strathmore. All of them are volunteers except for Muir Furzer, the fire chief, who is full-time.

Local firefighters return from Indianapolis

Jeff Karkut, left, and Terry Desserres were two of the three firefighters who went to the event from Strathmore.

Zombies roam the streets of RosebudShannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Hold onto your brain, zombies hit the streets in Rosebud on May 2.

The short movie was shot in 10 minutes of film with one scene lasting for eight minutes of the script. Giovanni Mocibob is the di-rector and had written the script two years ago when he had been in Rosebud to

perform in a show.“I got cast in this screen

show here in Rosebud and I thought this would still be a fun script to do,” said Mo-cibob.

The main actors began re-hearsing their scenes three weeks ago, and on Sunday all of the zombies were add-ed into the rehearsal.

The movie follows two roommates who go search-ing for Karl’s fiancé after

waking up to find their other roommate is a zom-bie. The main actors used their real names in the film to help the rehearsals go smoother.

Karl Sine is a professional theatre actor/director, and he is cast in the role of try-ing to find his fiancé.

“Because it’s an inde-pendent film and it’s such a small project it’s kind of neat being involved because

I get to give a lot of input,” said Sine.

“What’s so exciting to me is to be able to work on it with Giovanni and the rest of the gang that’s doing it. It’s great when you get a chance to work with people you respect and that you be-lieve are talented.”

Giovanni Mocibob is also playing in ‘We Won’t Pay’ which is showing at the Rosebud Theatre.

Take the Four-Week ‘Look Good, Feel Great!’ Challenge to discover how moderate UV tanning can make you feel good from the inside out!

If you have always wanted to try the indoor tanning experience but are unsure if it is right for you . . . this is the perfect opportunity. Sign up for our special ‘Look Good, Feel Great!’ Challenge Package that allows you to try UV tanning for 1-3 days per week for four weeks. Participating in this challenge will show you first-hand how tanning can help you Look Good, and Feel Great!

The Four-Week Challenge can benefit your lifestyle. A tan enhances muscle definition and will give you a golden glow. Many women also enjoy not having to wear or buy as much cosmetic make-up as a tan also enhances overall skin tone. You get to be the judge.

Tanning bed lamps emit UVB light which produces Vitamin D in your skin. Studies show that maintaining an optimum level of vitamin D has many benefits. For more information go to - www.TanCanada.org, www.vitaminDsociety.org, www.vitaminDcouncil.org, www.grassrootshealth.net.

Our Four-Week Challenge will run during the month of June, and your registration package will provide everything you need to get started. We will help you track your progress on the report card and will post photos of you before and after to monitor color results. The promotion also includes prize packages, tips and give-aways. All you need to do is come in for a tan every 1-3 days and feel the difference for yourself! Stop by our location in the Country Lane Mall, Strathmore or give us a call at 403-983-1803 to get registered and ready to start the challenge the first of June.

Already a tanning client? You can get

involved by referring friends or family members to try the challenge - we will reward you with a coupon for one week of FREE tanning for each referral who joins the challenge. Cheer on your referrals and help us mark their progress.

You may have heard or seen recent media accounts that stated indoor tanning can become addictive for some; and this has made you unsure if you should try it. Be assured that there are as many different reasons to tan indoors as there are people who tan, but addiction is not one of them. As a professional tanning facility, we find this media account to be an insult to every one of our clients.

Here are some facts to consider:Humans are not addicted to UV exposure,

we are attracted to it. By nature’s design, we are supposed to get regular UV exposure to be healthy.

To say anyone is addicted to UV is like saying they are addicted to air, food or water. We are naturally attracted to these things because we need them.

Vitamin D is now linked to lower risk of most cancers, heart disease and other disorders. The only way to achieve high enough vitamin D levels for this prevention is through regular UV exposure.

Not a single study anywhere in the world shows that UV exposure in a non-burning fashion is a significant factor for skin damage.

Keep in mind that billions of dollars are made telling you to avoid the sun – much more than will ever be made by the small businesses who offer professional indoor tanning services.

Enjoy your sunshine - from any source - in intelligent moderation. We hope to see you in our Four-Week ‘Look Good, Feel Great!’ Challenge.

Every May wom-en around the world are celebrated for their sacrifices and contributions to the family. With all that Mom does for her children, it would seem like the con-cept of honoring her would be ages old. However, it really wasn’t until relatively recently

that a celebration of mothers was insti-tuted.

In ancient Greece individuals honored Rhea, mother of the gods. Christians also celebrated Mary the mother of God. But it wasn’t until the 1900s be-fore the general mothering popula-tion was celebrated

in earnest.Ann Marie

Reeves Jarvis was a young Appalachian homemaker who, beginning in 1858, attempted to im-prove sanitation and nursing procedures through women’s clubs and what she called “Mothers Friendship Day.” It wasn’t Anne Ma-rie, but rather her daughter, Ann Jar-vis, who created the Mother’s Day that we celebrate today.

Anna spent many years caring for her aging and ailing mother. Anne Marie died on May 9, 1905 and Anna missed her terribly. Anna

noticed that many children failed to respect and honor their mothers while they were alive, and it wasn’t until after they died that these children recognized what they had lost in their parent. She intended to start a Mother’s Day to honor mothers.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis attempted to establish Moth-er’s Day to “honor mothers, living and dead.” She started the campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. To-gether with her friends, Jarvis start-ed a letter-writing campaign to urge ministers, business-men and congress-men to declare a national Mother’s Day holiday.

Her efforts paid off. The first Moth-er’s Day was cel-ebrated on May 10, 1908 and honored the late Anne Ma-rie Reeves Jarvis. After this initial celebration, Moth-er’s Day caught on. The Mother’s Day International Association was established on De-cember 12, 1912, to promote and en-courage meaningful observances of the event. And on May 9, 1914, a presi-dential proclama-tion declared that every year the sec-ond Sunday in May would be observed as Mother’s Day.

Students competed in the Badmin-ton Counties on Wed. April 28. Those who qualified are to head off to com-pete in the zones tournaments taking place in Banff and Canmore.

“Both of the coaches and I think it was fairly successful, we had over half our team make the playoff,” said John Reinhart from Holy Cross Col-legiate.

“We have five that qualified to go to zones and our kids are going to be playing in Canmore.”

The Strathmore Reds faced off against Calgary’s Pro Ball Force, PBF, this past Sunday.

The two teams were supposed to face each other for a total of three games this weekend, but Saturday’s game was can-celled due to poor playing conditions. The Reds went against the junior PBF team at one p.m. and won the first game of the day by a score of 7-6.

“We came back to win by one run in the ninth inning,” said John Forno. The second game of the day was switched up and the Reds battled the senior PBF team. At the bottom of the sixth the Reds were down 2-0, and PBF racked up another three points before ending the inning. Jor-dan Schmidt came in as the relief pitcher after PBF got yet another run.

“We’re doing alright, hitting them hard but right at the guy, we’re not getting any

timely hits,” said Darwin ArmitageThe seventh inning was when things

started to turn around for the Reds when they managed to get their first run of the game. PBF went to bat and hit a couple pop-ups that shut them down for the in-ning.

The Reds went up to bat and Gordan Ar-mitage hit the ball way out into right field, giving the Reds men on second and third. The bases were loaded and the score was now at 6-2. Jarrett Frehlich gets a solid hit deep into the field bringing the score to 6-4, heading into the ninth inning.

It was the bottom of the ninth and the Reds went up to bat, Joey Koshman got the base run of the inning, the score was 6-5. Dillon Valparis hits one hard to cen-tre, it looked like a homerun but it just barely missed making it over the fence. It was a close game and the Reds really stepped up to the plate in the last two innings. Calgary ended up winning the game 6-5.

Reds miss victory over PBF by 1 point

The Reds bring themselves back into the game in the eighth inning during their second game of the day Sunday May 2. John Forno, Reds, steps up to bat on May 2, against Calgary’s PBF in Kinsmen park.
