Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time You may have heard of Patrick Henry Hughes, hopefully because of his accomplishments. A gifted piano player, trumpeter, and singer, at age twenty he has performed on such stages as the Grand Ole Opry and the Kennedy Center. But Patrick Henry is also known as the young man in the wheelchair who, with his dad, performs with his University of Louisville marching band. Not only is he confined to a wheelchair because of a birth disorder, Patrick Henry is blind. He was born without eyes, but this is how he "sees" life: "I believe God gave me blindness so that I may see the inner qualities in everyone I meet." How do you view disabilities? Like Patrick Henry Hughes, do you view them as a gift? Is it possible to understand that in some aspects of our lives, we all have areas that could be deemed a disability? We may be blind to the needs of others, deaf to the sounds of praise from a friend, unable to express gratitude for the many gifts we receive on a daily basis. In today's reading from Mark, Jesus is presented with a blind man with a speech impediment. Pulling him out of the crowd to a solitary place, the man is healed through Jesus' touch. Jesus' decision to lead the man away into solitude in order to heal him stresses the importance of praying without distraction. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Jesus always responds to a prayer offered in faith, whether healing infirmities or forgiving sins (CCC 2616). It is often difficult to listen to the wonders of God or speak to him when we are surrounded by the clamor of the world around us. We are healed by the loving touch of Jesus when we allow ourselves and our hearts to listen, see, and feel only him.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A three-year old put his shoes on by himself. His mother noticed the left was on the right foot. She said, "Son, your shoes are on the wrong feet." He looked up at her with a raised brow and said, "Don't kid me, Mom. I know they're my feet."

PROPER CHURCH “ETIQUETTE” Visual and Auditory Distractions: Last week we considered the problem of so many people who come to church late on a regular basis. This week we think about another problem in most churches: distractions. The take on a couple of forms — visual and auditory. We spoke about one of the visual distractions last week when we talked about people who walk into church late and disturb the concentration of others. There are also visual distractions in the church and in the pew that do not need to be taking place: the playing children and the wandering parishioner. Both should be self-evident. However, let me explain. We hear complaints all the time from parishioners who talk about children in the pews around them who are allowed to play quite actively. Some children (and their parents) go so far as to bring their children’s favorite toys to church with them. This is very sensitive because we sure do want to see our children and we want our children to have a good sense of “church” as they grow up. However, if parents allow their children to play to such an extent that they are a major distraction to other parishioners, they are doing the parishioner and their children a disservice. If a child cannot be kept in line without playing, please remember that we have a “cry room” in the back of the church. It is unsettling to see adults go to the cry room to “get away” from the loud and boisterous children in the congregation. It should be the other way around. Which brings us to auditory distractions. You probably note that I pray the Mass pretty much from memory. However, there are some days that I am forced to glance down at the Sacramentary in order to keep my place in Mass because a child is screaming at decibels higher than a jet taking off. It is more unsettling to see a parent not do a thing about their screaming child. Please note: the screaming child is a major distraction to others in church who are doing their best to pray. No one — sitting in the same pew or all the way across the church — is unaffected by a screaming child who is allowed to have a tantrum in church. Again, that is why the “cry room” exists. Do we want your children in church? Absolutely. However, if they are unmanageable, you owe it to your fellow parishioners to remove your child from the main church until your child is no longer distracting the faithful from prayer.

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: September 7: Rev. Joseph P. Smith (1986) September 8: Rev. Roman S. Wojcicki (1963) September 9: Rev. Paul P. Jakulevicius (1992) September 12: Rev. John A. Halo (1986) Rev. Vincent Uvodic (1987) September 13: Rev. Bernard F. Shank (1997)

WHAT IS THE RCIA? The Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults is the formal and proper way for adults to enter the Roman Catholic Church. It is a series of classes and discernment that helps a person

determine whether or not God is calling him or her to become a full member of the Catholic Church. The RCIA classes will run every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. is the latest that we go. Often we are finished by 8:00 p.m.) in the Solar Room. The next set of classes will begin with inquiry sessions the last two Tuesdays of September (22nd and 29th). These sessions give you an opportunity to fill out a registration form telling us about yourself. You also pick up the book and syllabus for the year. You only need to attend one of the two inquiry sessions. The regular sessions begin Tuesday, October 6th. The RCIA is also appropriate for any Catholic who may have been baptized but never had their other Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). Is God calling you to the Catholic Church? Come find out!

CORRECTIONS Last week, in my finance report, I made a couple of mistakes. I would like to clarify those points: 1. I said that the parish pays 9% of its ordinary income

instead of 10% in quota because of our school. Actually, the quota for parishes with schools such as ours is only 8%, not 9%.

2. While we took a loss on school endowments, the bishop capped the loss for schools at 10% while the total diocesan portfolio took a loss of 15.7%

Back to School Pool Party

Who said that going back to school can’t be enjoyable? Ask any of the St. Thomas More School students who

attended the annual Pool Party and you can bet that they

enjoyed every minute of this last-days-of-summer activity. Chilly temperatures and the

threat of rain didn’t slow down the many families who attended the party at the

Munster Community Pool, sponsored by the STMS

Home and School Association. The thunder and lightening, however, brought an abrupt end to an evening filled with lots of fun and

splashes.

those 40 days for an end to abortion (call 836-5337) 2) stand with many others for some period of time

during those days at the abortion clinic in Merrillville, in peaceful, prayerful public witness against abortion (call 836-5337)

3) privately make a point to pray and fast for 40 days for an end to abortion
