    Message From The Village President

    Sincerely,

    Billie D. Roth, Village President

Its hard to believe that the holiday season isupon us. This is one of my favorite times ofthe year. Everyone seems filled with thespirit of giving. It provides us the opportuni-ty to reflect on the blessings we have, toappreciate those who have helped us

achieve those blessings, and to share ourblessings with others.

Veterans Day allows us to honor and appreci-ate the dedication of those who gave of them-selves to keep our country strong. Our annualVeterans Day Ceremony will be held onNovember 11, at 11:00 am at the Veterans Memorial. Please join us as we thank althose who served to provide us with the blessings of liberty.

On November 2, we invite you to join us in a celebration of the diversity of ourcommunity. The Community Relations Commission is hosting its annual Culturesof Our Community event to be held at Poplar Creek Library. Understanding dif

ferent cultures and traditions brings about better understanding of our commonbonds. It makes our country and our community strong.

Local service organizations also help to strengthen our community. They collecmoney or goods to help those most in need. I participated in the annual KiwaniPeanut Day Mayors Challenge along with the mayors of Bartlett and Hanover ParkWhile I was able to collect more money than my colleagues, the real winner is ourcommunity. Kiwanis Clubs, like other service organizations, collect money locally inorder to give back to our community with scholarships, donations and program sup-port. Thank you to everyone who gave.

Shopping locally is an easy and convenient way to give back to our community

Local businesses provide jobs for your neighbors. Sales taxes help to pay for Villageservices. Using sales tax dollars helps the Village reduce its reliance on properttaxes. When you shop outside of Streamwood, your tax dollars go outside oStreamwood, too. Make your tax dollars work for you. During this holiday seasonremember to shop smart, shop local and shop Streamwood!

The holiday season also encourages us to remember those less fortunate. Consideadopting a family or senior for the holidays. Donate coats, mittens, or scarves, ocontribute to the food pantry. For more information, please contact Hanove

Township at (630) 837-0301 or the Senior Center at (630) 483-5600.

What would the holidays be without Luminaria? Our Luminaria Celebration wilbe held on December 6. Consider volunteering to light luminaria. Visit with Santa

and Mrs. Claus. Enjoy warm refreshments. Stay for our holiday tree lighting. Thiis a great way for you and your family to kick off the holidays!

The Village Board looks forward to seeing you at these upcoming communityevents. And, we would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Go Green This WinterHoliday SeasonTips for Energy Efficient Winter

The Village s Natural Resource Conservancy Commiss iooffers the following tips for a more energy efficient winter:

Use non-toxic de-icing substances such as clean clay ca

litter, sand, or fireplace/stove ash to prevent hazardous waste from chemical de-icers.

Use a shovel, ice cracker, or broom to clear snow fromyour sidewalk, porch, or driveway rather than gasoline-powered snow blowers. Electronic snow blowerare another alternative. They consume energy, but dnot emit greenhouse gases.

Lower your thermostat temperature (or install a programmable thermostat) at night and when youraway. Lowering your thermostat by 10 degrees careduce your heating bill by 10% - 20%.

Make sure your heating system (boiler, furnace, or hea

pump) is operating at its most efficient. Have a contractoperform a routine check-up before winter hits.

If your heating equipment is more than ten years oldconsider replacing it with an energy-efficient unitReplacing old equipment with energy-efficient equipment saves more energy and money in the long run.

Weatherstrip your windows and caulk any cracks you findin the window frames. Install simple plastic-film storm

windows. Open the curtains, drapes, and blinds of anwindows that receive direct sunlight during the day. Closthe window coverings at night to keep the heat in.

    7/8Schools

School District-U46 NewsNew Common Core State StandardsState governors and education commissioners with input from parents, schooladministrators and experts from across the country developed the Common CoreState Standards (CCSS). To date, 45 states, the District of Columbia, four territoriesand the Department of Defense schools have adopted them. CCSS were built on thebest and highest state standards in existence in the U.S. and in foreign countries.

Illinois adopted CCSS in 2010 and students will be tested using the new standardsby spring of 2015. At U-46, weve already begun aligning our curriculum andtraining our teachers so that the transition is smooth. Parents can find additionalinformation at www.u-46.org.

New ISAT Cut ScoresTo better align CCSS, in January 2013, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)increased the performance expectations for elementary and middle school students

who take the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) for math and reading. These higher expectations will cause the number of s tudents who meet and exceedstandards to drop significantly both in U-46 and across Illinois.

The new expectations do not mean that our students know less than before or are

less prepared. It means that the state expects a higher level of knowledge andskills to achieve the Meet or Exceed rating on the ISAT.

New State Report CardsOn October 31, ISBE unveiled new state report cards to better reflect the change inexpectations and paint a more accurate picture of how schools are preparing stu-dents to be successful in college and the work place. The new report cards will fea-ture easy to understand information about school performance. For details, visitwww.illinoisreportcard.com.
