Remote Radio Head’s are used to expand the coverage of existing BTS to the nearby areas using fiber as a media. Instead of placing a full blown BTS at the radiating points, the same BTS sector is extended to Remote locations. The media used are fiber. The same BTS output can be extended to multiple locations using fiber. Advantage of using a RRH is that the remote location has a baseband band unit that amplifies the incoming signal.Application is mainly to expand the footprint of the BTS to farther locations.Disadvantage is that it does not have an RF unit, hence capacity cannot be increased but it can sometimes be a limitation (dropped calls etc.).Maximum distance of fiber is 20km.
