Strengthening Parent Support Program
Noah’s Ark is here for families The foundation for better outcomes for children and families occurs when parents feel that they are not alone, are
empowered and can share valuable experiences. The Strengthening Parent Support Program (SPSP) links families in
the Gippsland area to Parent Groups, training sessions, news & information while promoting self-advocacy
Parents and carers who have a child with a disability or developmental delay can meet up with other parents and carers
through SPSP. Noah’s Ark, in partnership with the Victorian Government provides SPSP for families with children aged
birth - 18 years who live in Gippsland
This program is fully funded and free of charge for family members

Every day at Gippsland Disability Advocacy we encounter issues regarding accessibility and transport and the
subsequent difficulties encountered by people with a disability who reside in Gippsland.
We are fortunate to have a close working relationship with Disability Resources Centre who are campaigning
for accessible public transport across Victoria, and we need your help. In the run up to the 2020 budget we
want to encourage people to campaign in every area of the State to make as much noise as possible about
what is not working for people with disabilities.
Would you be interested in joining a "Free" one day campaigning workshop in Sale on the 3rd March 2020 or
Traralgon on the 4th March 2020.
The day itself will involve four presentations in the morning:
• The Public Transport Ombudsman will explain how complaints shape social change and how to make them
effectively.
• A public speaking expert will talk about how to present powerful stories.
• A social media expert will talk about using social media platforms for campaigning purposes.
• We will also co-ordinate a session to start curating a local direct action.
5
In the afternoon attendees can book 1:1 sessions to work on their own impact story or complaint. The public
speaking presenter will run group sessions at which people can hone, present and get feedback on their own
story. People who want to take their stories to the next stage can sign up for a locally-based follow-up
workshop in public speaking and an opportunity to have their story filmed. Writers can sign up for subsequent
mentoring support.
Is this something you would like to take part in, and can you help spread the message?
To register your attendance please see the links below.

Guardianship and administration
From 1 March 2020, the new Guardianship and Administration Act 2019 comes into effect.
The new Act includes a presumption that a person has the capacity to make decisions unless evidence is provided otherwise and recognises that a person also has decision-making capacity if they can make decisions with support.
The new Act enables the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) to appoint a supportive guardian (personal mat-ters) or supportive administrator (financial matters).
If there is no other less restrictive option, VCAT may still appoint a guardian or administrator with legal authority to make deci-sions for the person about specific personal or financial matter(s).
However, they must make decisions that reflect the person’s will (for example, to live independently and well) and preferences, unless it would cause serious harm to the person.

Save the Date: Reframe Rare for Rare Disease Day 2020 Friday, February 28th, 2020 When the challenge of raising awareness for people affected by a rare disease still looms On Rare Disease Day we must re-double our efforts Re-think, re-envision, reimagine Reframe what it means to be 'rare' In fact - rare isn't scarce, rare isn't infrequent, rare isn't remote Rare is not as rare as you think The statistics speak for themselves There are more than 300 million patients, each supported by family, friends and a team of carers, that make up the rare disease community worldwide. Over 6,000 different diseases. Collectively, they make up the third largest country in the world. Rare is many. Rare is strong. Rare is proud. The likely truth is that you know one of the 1 in 20 people affected by a rare disease. We need society to understand that millions of people living with a rare disease around the world face inequitable access to diagnosis, treatment and care. It's time to take action for people living with a rare disease to have equal opportunities to realise their potential. Rare Disease Day is entering a new phase, focusing on reframing what it means to be rare for the next decade of the campaign. We need everyone to get involved and join the movement to reframe rare! https://www.rarediseaseday.org/country/au/australia https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/traralgon-healthy-mothers-
