We celebrate anniversaries of membership in UUCSR as well as our annual Flower Communion with a reflection on honoring diversity in Unitarian Universalism We recognize Norbert Capekrsquos creation of the Flower Communion Ceremony (1923) as a ritual for Unitarians which would bind together in one community those from differing backgrounds

Looking Back

In August 2016 the task of the Interim Senior Minister (ISM) was to help prepare the congregation for a long-term ministerial leader to succeed The Rev Dr Paul S Johnson who had just retired I thought it would be helpful to look back over the past two and a half years to note some of the highlights and milestones during my tenure

During my first year as ISM I was committed to maintaining worship of the highest quality on Sunday mornings That commitment included focusing on themes that were relevant and important to the congregation including ldquoCultivating Empathyrdquo (to encourage us all to develop our moral imaginations) and ldquoWhere Do We Go from Hererdquo (to urge us to treat one another with respect even when we disagree) The Ministry Team continued to offer engaging intergenerational and family services at Homecoming Thanksgiving Hanukkah and Christmas Passover and Easter at the Blessing of the Animals as well as at Soulful Sundown each month

Adult programs in the 2016ndash17 year addressed racial justice through showing Ken Burnsrsquo Defying the Nazis a film about the heroic work Unitarians Waitstill and Martha Sharp did in Europe during World War II to help Jews escape from Nazi occupationmdashwhich inspired us to develop our own Courage to Defy Hate Task Force Later in the year I led a UUA Common Read discussion of the Rev William Barberrsquos The Third Reconstruction (published by UUArsquos Beacon Press) With Ministerial Intern Oscar Sinclair I also led seminars on the background and traditions of Passover and Easter

Orientations in the fall and spring enabled the Ministry Team and Membership Committee to welcome 35 new members to UUCSR that year I was also privileged to help the congregation celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a series of events including a Peter Yarrow concert in December Christmas Eve Services drawing on music and readings from the past three-quarters of a century and a gala dinner on May 13

We welcome back to our pulpit The Rev Susan Frederick-Gray President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) As we remember some historical foundations for Motherrsquos Day she will invite us to reflect on the ways that Unitarians then and Unitarian Universalists today call us to the practice of Beloved Community We will also welcome new members of UUCSR Prior to the Service Rev Frederick-Gray will be in the Social Hall from 945ndash1030 AM to greet people during the Bagel Breakfast

Rev Frederick-Gray was elected UUA President in June 2017 Prior to her election she served as Lead Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix AZ She played a critical role in the long-term campaign to end the constitutional violations of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio Rev Frederick-Gray received a Masters of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School and a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin Madison She is a lifelong UU who grew up in the St Louis area and now lives in Cambridge MA with her husband Brian and their son

During this annual event Children and Youth will be honored in a traditional moving up ceremony The Young Peoples Choir will perform The annual all-congregation Bridging Picnic will be held on the grounds afterward All are welcome

Finally during my first interim year I did my best with the other ministers to maintain a non-anxious helpful presence during a controversy over establishing a Hadley House LLC that had many members and friends upset and anxious

My second interim year 2017ndash18 included experimentation with an annual theme ldquoWorth and Dignity for Allrdquo which the ministers wove into services on homecoming on transgender realities and rights on peace on the golden and platinum rules (at Easter) and on grace

The Courage to Defy Hate Task Force continued its deliberations about ways to assist immigrants and refugees as well as how to confront systemic racism In support of these efforts I preached on ldquoThe King Legacy Beyond Civil Rightsrdquo and ldquoRediscovering Civilityrdquo in January To encourage thinking ahead I preached on the ldquoCongregation of Your Dreamsrdquo in February (inviting congregants to submit their own dreams for UUCSR) and the ldquoCongregation of Our Hopesrdquo in March I also met individually with Program Committees to document their hopes and dreams

We all expected that I would help the Rev Dr Natalie Fenimore and Ministerial Intern Nancy Reid-McKee provide coverage during Jennifer Browerrsquos sabbatical but I was out for the better part of two months in late fall and early winter with diverticulitis and subsequent surgery This gave me the perfect opportunity to experience the amazing healing powers of this community

When I returned I helped launch a ldquoRealizing Our Hopes and Dreamsrdquo pledge campaign with mixed results and co-led with Veatch Executive Director Joan Minieri a presentation on the congregationrsquos courageous risk-taking role in making a grant to Beacon Press in 1971 to support publication of The Pentagon Papers

In this third and final year engaging the theme ldquoStrengthening the Interdependent Webrdquo I preached on ldquoEmbracing Our Missionrdquo (proposing five possible mission priorities to explore) on ldquoPreserving Our Democracyrdquo in troubling times on ldquoReconciliation and Restorative Practicesrdquo and a sermon series on the six sources of our UU faith The Christmas Eve services featured The Star a play Irsquod written as a young adult

I have continued to work in partnership with the Racial Justice Task Force to address ldquoWhite Fragilityrdquo through a discussion group in the fall and a sermon in January I have served as liaison to other local UU congregations through the Long Island Area Council I have enjoyed lively periodic conversations with residents of Hadley House I have also worked with the Board to help lay the groundwork for what comes nextmdasha Developmental Minister to focus on four long-term congregational challenges

Throughout these three years I have done my best to support Rev Jennifer Brower and the other members of the Ministry

CONGREGATIONAL AFFAIRSBudget Update

The Finance Committee approved and the Board of Trustees accepted a budget of $19947000 for the 2019ndash2020 Congregational Year which meets the spending limit set by the Congregation

At the start of the budgeting process the Finance Committee was faced with the challenge of eliminating a deficit of about $900000 between requests and available spend To help guide the Committee in the difficult decisions required to balance the budget three Town Hall meetings were held with the Congregation in March attended by about 30 members each Members shared their opinions on spending and expense priorities for inclusion or exclusion in the budget The graphic above shows the topics discussed at the Town Hall meetings with sizes of the words representing the frequency of mention

The Finance Committee also met with key stakeholders including the Ministers Music Director Veatch Chair and Executive Director President and Vice President and Chairs of multiple committees The Committee reviewed every line item in the budget with a view to understanding the connection to our mission and operational health All the information gathered was useful and enabled the Committee to shape a budget that met the financial obligations while balancing the many needs and wishes of the Congregation

Census 2020 Why a Complete Count is so Important

On Friday April 12 I attended the NYS Complete Count Public Hearing on the 2020 Census I heard two stories that really distressed me In Roosevelt the executive director of a community-based organization (CBO) applied for a federal grant for the CBOrsquos work with families in the town He was denied the grant because his town

wasnrsquot poor enough Knowing his community and their economic struggles he knew this was untrue Digging into the issue further he learned that in the last census there was a serious undercount in Roosevelt The second story was about the Wyandanch School District A few years after the last census kindergarten and first grade classes became seriously overcrowded The district had not planned on so many children of that age The culprit An undercount in the last census

According to the US Census Bureau ldquoThe census provides vital information for you and your community It determines how many representatives each state gets in Congress and is used to redraw district boundaries Redistricting counts are sent to the states by March 31 2021 Communities rely on census statistics to plan for a variety of resident needs including new roads schools and emergency services Businesses use census data to determine where to open places to shop Each year the federal government distributes more than $675 billion to states and communities based on Census Bureau datardquo

Recognizing the importance of the census I began to think of ways that UUCSR could become involved in making sure that everyone is counted

On the personal level we need to begin talking up the importance of participation at every opportunity we get When we receive the questionnaire in the mail sometime in March 2020 we need to respond and help others respond This year there will be three options for response mail telephone or internet Once those forms begin arriving we need to check with our family members friends and neighbors Are they completing the census Do they have questions Do they need help Perhaps we can devote some time here at UUCSR to helping folks

We also need to be attentive to efforts to promote the census in our local communities and participate where we can Each county has a Complete Count Committee Soon wersquoll be seeing notices about their efforts

Ami BhalodkarThe addition of marvelous new members in our midst offers the same inspiration as do the magnolias cherry trees and daffodils now in full bloom

It is a great delight to introduce and welcome to this congregation Ami Bhalodkar Some of us had the privilege of hearing Amirsquos eloquent presentation at a recent inter-faith service celebrating Gandhirsquos life

Beginning with a Hindu upbringing now feeling an affinity for Buddhism Ami concluded that Unitarian Universalism and this congregation were a fitting spiritual home for her husband Moin Haque their six-year-old son Salil and herself She is part of an interfaith marriage and is an ordained interfaith Spiritual Minister

Ami grew up on Long Island and was born a year after her parents both doctors came to this country from India Majoring in Asian Studies at Columbia University she now has Masters Degrees in Public Health and Counselling

Amirsquos interests include yoga reading dancing (meaning formal Indian dancing) and nature especially the ocean Moin will be introduced later but meanwhile a most cordial welcome to you Ami and to your family
