Welcome to the 6th Annual Strickland – Driggers Bull Sale

We invite you to study the EPDs and pedigrees contained in this catalog and to come out and visit the farms of the sale participants to learn more about each bull. Much thought, planning and hard work has

gone into getting this group of bulls ready to go home with you on sale day.

Many of the bulls EPDs are well above the breed averages. Listed will be the percentile rankings 50% or better for EPDs and Performance Indexes on each lot. This information will allow you to see how the

bulls rank for that trait within the entire breed. Approximately two thirds of the sale offering would be considered heifer safe according to their EPD ranking within the breed for Direct Calving Ease and Birth

Weight.

Bulls are yearlings, long yearlings, and a few select lots of two year olds. All the bulls have been developed in large pastures to allow for plenty of exercise. The bulls are not fat, but instead are athletic

and ready to go to work.

Bulls were selected for good disposition, sound structure and growth rate. They were fed a free choice ration consisting of soy hull and corn gluten pellets and grass or peanut hay. They have passed a

complete breeding soundness exam and have been ultrasound scanned for marbling and ribeye area.

Many of the bulls offered in this sale are sired by breed leading A.I. sires and out of proven highly fertile, Reg. Simmental, Angus and SimAngus cows. They were bred to work in commercial cattle herds in the

heat and humidity and to go out and sire calves that have the potential to make their new owners money in the cow business.

The bulls are available for viewing anytime up until the sale. They will be on site at Strickland Angus Farm, noon or after, on Friday December 8. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided on sale day morning

with a complimentary lunch at noon.

Please look the offering over and feel free to contact any of us as we would gladly assist you in any way possible.

Economically Relevant Traits and Selection Indices

By Matt Spangler, NE Extension Beef Genetics Specialist ECONOMICALLY RELEVANT TRAITS Sire selection does not need to be overwhelming or complex. Centuries of work by geneticists and statisticians have allowed for the development of tools that help producers make decisions relative to the next bull you purchase; do not ignore them. The key questions that every rancher needs to answer are: 1) What are my breeding/marketing goals? 2) What traits directly impact the profitability of my enterprise? 3) Are there environmental constraints that dictate the level of performance that is acceptable for a given trait in my enterprise? Once these three questions are answered, sire selection becomes much simpler. The answers to these questions inherently lead a producer to the traits that are economically relevant to their enterprise. We call these traits Economically Relevant Traits (ERT). Fundamentally these are traits that are directly associated with a revenue stream or a cost. All traits that are not ERTs are indicator traits, or a trait that is genetically correlated to an ERT but not an ERT itself. Classic examples of indicator traits include ultrasonic carcass measurements and birth weight. Ultrasonic carcass measurements are a non-destructive measure of traits such as intramuscular fat percentage (IMF). Producers do not receive premiums for IMF levels, rather premiums (and discounts) are applied to quality grades. Assuming that carcass maturity values are the same, actual carcass marbling is the driver of quality grade. Although IMF is genetically correlated to carcass marbling it is not the ERT. Birth weight is another great example of an indicator trait. Selection to decrease birth weight in an attempt to reduce the prevalence of dystocia is practiced by numerous commercial bull buyers. However birth weight does not have a direct revenue source or cost associated with it. The trait that does have a cost associated with it is calving ease (or difficulty). Calving ease is related to the level of assistance needed during a calving event. Although the two are related, the genetic correlation between calving ease and birth weight is only between -0.6 and -0.8, suggesting that birth weight only explains 36-64% of the genetic differences between animals for calving difficulty. MULTIPLE TRAIT SELECTION Selecting to improve multiple traits simultaneously can be cumbersome. Just open up any sale catalog and it is easy to become confused immediately. Economic indices can help alleviate this confusion. An economic index is a collection of EPDs weighted by their economic value such that traits with greater impacts on production goals have a larger economic weight associated with them. The basic equation of an economic index is: I = EPD1 x a1 + EPD2 x a2 + EPD3 x a3 + EPDn x an Where: I is the index value; EPDn is the EPD for trait n; and an is the economic weight associated with trait n. Below are some examples of currently available economic indexes. Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Shorthorn, and Simmental all publish at least one economic index. A full description of all available economic indexes can be found in the University of Nebraska NebGuide G1847 available at http://beef.unl.edu/nebguides BEEF VALUE ($B) This Angus index includes EPDs for yearling weight, carcass weight, and carcass and traits. Producers wishing to enhance growth and simultaneously select for quality and yield grade should use this index. It is a terminal index and caution should be used if replacement females are retained to avoid increasing mature weights of females. Example: Bull A +65.60 Bull B +52.50 We would expect that the calves from Bull A would be worth $13.10/hd. more than those from Bull B if retained through a feedlot and sold on a Certified Angus Beef (CAB) grid. ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API) This Simmental index assumes that the sire will be used on both cows and heifers and that heifers will be retained as replacements while all other offspring will be sold grade and yield. This index is targeted at a producer that is looking to optimize revenue from fed cattle and maternal characteristics of replacement heifers. Example: Bull A +138 Bull B +118 We would expect that the calves from Bull A would be worth $20/hd. more than those from Bull B. Over a span of 4 years Bull A could generate $2,400 more revenue than Bull B if mated to 30 females/yr. ($20/hd x 30/hd x 4 yrs.). CHOOSING AN INDEX TO USE When making selection decisions based on economic indices, it’s important to consider your particular breeding objective and the traits that will achieve desired production goals. For instance, if your production goals included retaining replacements and selling cull heifers and steer progeny at weaning, then an index that assumes all offspring are sold on a grid-based system is inappropriate for your operation. It is also important to know the breed average values for particular indexes and to use percentile ranks to determine how far above or below average a particular animal is compared to the rest of a breed.

A Guide to Understanding and Using the Angus and Simmental Dollar Indexes

Let’s keep it simple – if you sell your calves at weaning and retain replacement heifers, or background cattle, $W (Angus) and API (Simmental) should be more important to you than $B (Angus) or TI (Simmental). If you feed out your calves, retain ownership and see them through

finishing, $B and TI will have more importance for you. All four indexes are multi-trait indexes, combining many traits of economic importance. ALL FOUR are important indexes as all cattle are eventually harvested so the carcass components should not be ignored even if you do sell your calf crop at weaning time. Someone down the road will feed and harvest those cattle and they will be more likely to return to you to buy your calves if the next link in the chain is profitable too. The following information comes from various articles written by American Simmental and

American Angus Association Staff.

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6000 over a +50 bull of both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. Current Average Sim Hybrid API index is +120.7 and TI is +67.00.

$W – Weaned Calf Value

Ask an experienced cow-calf producer to identify the characteristics of a profitable beef cow and you will probably get a response like this: reproductively sound, calves easily, transmits rapid growth, enough milk (but not too much), raises an above average calf year after year, moderate mature size, reduced feed energy needs. Cows meeting these requirements will generate profit, because they do most everything right.

A TOOL FOR THE COW HERD

Above average outputs (pounds of calf weaned) coupled with average or below average feed inputs are sure to improve the bottom line. But is it even possible to create a cow herd that gets so many things right? Pipe dream or achievable task? Research using the AAA database indicates that it can be done and the $W is the right tool for the job. If your quest is to build a productive and profitable cow herd, the Association’s bio-economic index called weaned calf value or $W, can help you reach that goal.

Weaned calf value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth transmitted to the calf, maternal milk and mature cow size. If you select for higher $W animals, the results will generally be more early growth, moderate mature size, above average (though typically not extreme) milk, and heavier calf weaning weights. Higher $W females get these things right and are constructed in a more desirable package.

USING $W AS A SELECTION TOOL

Not every high $W cow will be stamped out of a cookie-cutter mold, of course. $W can and should be used as a genetic selection tool to help build increased profit potential to a cow herd. It will pay producers to pursue higher $W cattle, while at the same time keeping a sharp eye on other individual traits and EPDs, and $Values they deem important to their operations. Doing so can help you build a cow herd that does almost everything right.

$B – Beef Value

$B is an overall $Value for post-weaning feedlot and carcass value. It combines $F and $G as a selection tool for quality, red meat yield and pounds produced. The $B is not simply the sum of $F and $G. $Values are business minded and in the language of economics. They have a great deal to offer the commercial bull buyer in terms of providing a multi-trait selection tool. It is important to remind Angus bull buyers these are one of various tools they use to make their operations successful. Selection indexes will continue to become more widely accepted across the seed stock industry as a means to identify genetics for use in commercial programs.

HOW THE BULLS IN THE SALE WERE DEVELOPEDAll the bulls in the sale were developed in large grass pastures. They were fed a commodity blend ration made up of50% soyhull pellets, 40% corn gluten pellets & 10% ground shelled corn. They were fed this ration free choice while grazing bermuda grass and bahia grass pastures during the summer months and then peanut hay or bermuda grasshay free choice during the fall.

At all times during the development period, they had access to clean fresh water and a vitamin mineral mixture thatcontains approximately 18% salt.

Driggers Simmental Farm - Glennville, Georgia

Driggers Simmental Farm (Jessie &Sherry) began in 1989 with the missionto raise quality registered Simmentalthat will excel for commercial cattle-men and breeders alike. Our familyconsists of sons Jason, Joshua andJudah and daughters Anna, Kennessa,Danielle, Sammantha and Jaimee. Ourfarm has been in the Driggers and Brannen family since 1920 and we areblessed to be the 3rd generation to farmthis land.

Our breeding program concentrates onproducing Simmental and SimAngusbulls for commercial cattle operations.Though our operation is not big in scale,it is big on the belief that data must becollected and passed along to the American Simmental Association on eachand every cow and calf in our herd.

Driggers Simmental Farm has always been about improving performance of

Jessie & Sherry Driggers cattle. We believe that unless you trackperformance of individual animals in

your herd and make diligent use of that data, your program will never move forward and will neveroffer your bull buying customers seedstock that can help improve their bottom line.

We believe that skillful use of EPDs and Performance Indexes by conscientious ASA members have been the driving force in making Simmental Cattle a major player in the beef industry today. Whathas made the EPDs and indexes such a powerful tool is the reliable data on each and every calf crop. Without accurate and reliable phenotypic data on each and every animal in your herd, EPDs and indexescan't project a true picture of an individual animal. When a prospective bull buyer looks at a sale catalogwe want them to get a true and accurate picture of what they are looking at and how that animal canimprove their bottom line. Ultimately, the beef consumer is the winner in all this data collection. Ithelps to make sure that each and every beef purchase will result in an enjoyable eating experienceand keep beef on the tables of U.S. consumers.

We are dedicated to using TempleGrandin's Principles on our Farm, andbecause of this we are able to walkamong our Herd even at night duringa Full Moon, and they will lay and chewtheir cud or nurse their Young. We are Blessed.

Boyett Farms - Glennville, Georgia

Boyett Farms began in 1979 with the construction of its first two poultry houses. In 1989, we added asmall stocker operation and converted this to a brood cow operation in 1993. Today, Boyett Farmsconsist of eight poultry houses, and a brood and seedstock operation of Angus and Simangus cattleowned by Anthony and Donna, Landon and Tori, and four of the most beautiful herdsman a farm couldask for: Sarah Beth, Anna, Landry and Gintry.

Since 1999, artificial insemination and embryo transfer has become an extensive part of our breedingprogram. Our emphasis on calving ease, rapid growth, and carcass merit is evident in our herd.

This is our 4th year that Boyett Farms have been asked to partner with our good friends, the Stricklandsand Driggers, to bring you an offering of cattle to take your program to the next level. We believe youwill see for yourself December 9th. We would love to help you find that bull that works best for you.

Strickland Angus Farm

2017 marks the 65th year the Strickland Family has been raising Angus Cattle. My grandparents: Ernest & Rubyepurchased their first Angus cows from the Dwight Kennedy herd, Claxton, GA in 1952. The farm in Glennville waspurchased in 1969 by my late father: Dr. Jim Strickland & mother Norma. Additional acres have been added overthe years allowing us to run 150 mother cows. We are thrilled that my sister Quinn, her husband Vic Flournoy, and their youngest son Cade have recently moved back to the farm. They are eager and willing to share in the daily responsibilities and challenges in raising quality breeding stock and commercial cattle. Their oldest son,Zach works in Pooler, GA. Brother Monty, his wife Mara, their kids Sam and Emry, reside in the Atlanta area. JoeAegar has also been a valued member of our team for the last 15 years. Thank you Joe!

We renewed our focus on raising breeding stock in the last 12 years and have also added Simmental to the mix.Our herd of seedstock females continue to improve with recent additions from Yon Family Farms and LemmonCattle Enterprises. Our purebred and commercial cows run together on hybrid Bermuda and winter/summerannuals. None of our calves are creep fed at any time. We believe good feet, efficient grazers, and an acceptabledisposition are just as important as strong EPD's. These traits are visibly evident in this year's bull offering. As we have in the last 2 sales, the Stricklands will be donating the entire sale proceeds of a select lot to the TattnallCounty Livestock Exhibitors. Thank you for your interest and support.

The Rules Of Yearling Bull Management

22

When it comes to buying bulls, a diligent amount of time spent studying performance data, EPDs, pedigrees and other pertinent info is warranted as sire selection is the most important tool for making genetic progress in the herd. Of equal importance, however, is the care and management of the newly acquired bull, says Scott P. Greiner, Virginia Tech Extension animal scientist. Greiner says proper management and nutrition are essential for bulls to perform satisfactorily during the breeding season. Particularly with yearling bulls, management prior to, during and after the first breeding season is particularly important, he says. Prior to the breeding season. Many newly purchased yearling bulls are coming off a performance test that provided a high plane of nutrition, so their diet’s energy level should gradually be reduced to prevent excessive fat deposition. Do this by restricting intake of high-energy grain supplements, in conjunction with supplying a total diet lower in energy content (primarily forage), he says. Young bulls should be managed to be a body condition score 6 at turn-out. This will give him adequate energy reserves for the breeding season. Yearling bulls can be expected to lose 100 lbs. or more during the course of the breeding season. Acquiring a new yearling bull at least 60 to 90 days prior to the breeding season is critical from several aspects. First, this leaves ample time for the new bull to get adjusted to the feed and environment of his new home, as well as an opportunity for several new bulls to be comingled for a period of time prior to turnout. Second, adequate exercise, in combination with proper nutrition, is essential to "harden" up these bulls prior to the breeding season. A facility for the newly acquired bull that allows for ample exercise will help create bulls that are physically fit for the breeding season. A bull’s nutrition will be dependent on his body condition. Yearling bulls are still developing and should be targeted to gain 2-2½ lbs./day from a year of age through the breeding season. Bulls weighing about 1,200 lbs. will consume 25-30 lbs./day of dry matter. This intake may consist of high-quality pasture, plus 12 lbs. corn; grass legume hay, plus 12 lbs. of corn; or 80 lbs. of corn silage and 2 lbs. of protein supplement. Provide adequate clean water, and a complete mineral free-choice. Prior to the breeding season, all bulls should receive a breeding soundness exam (BSE) to assure fertility. In fact, all working bulls should have an annual BSE. Because a variety of factors may affect bull fertility, it’s smart to retest young bulls before the breeding season even if it has only been a few months since their pre-sale BSE. Management during the breeding season. Breed young bulls for a maximum of 60 days in order to prevent overuse, severe weight loss and reduced libido. Severe weight loss can impair future growth and development, and reduce his lifetime usefulness. When practical, supplementing young bulls with grain during the breeding season will reduce excessive weight loss. In single-sire situations, young bulls can normally breed a number of females about equal to their age in months. Thus, a newly purchased, 18-month-old bull could be placed with 18 cows or heifers. Bulls used together in multiple-sire breeding pastures should be of similar age and size. Young bulls can’t compete with older bulls in the same breeding pasture. A common practice is to rotate bulls among different breeding pastures every 21 to 28 days to decrease the breeding pressure on a single bull. Some producers use older bulls early in the breeding season and replace them with young bulls. The appropriate bull-to-female ratio will vary from one operation to the next based on bull age, condition, fertility and libido. Other factors include the size of the breeding pasture, available forage supply, length of the breeding season and number of bulls with a group of cows. Observe bulls closely to monitor their breeding behavior and libido to ensure they’re servicing and settling cows. Additionally, observe the cowherd to monitor their estrous cycles. Many females coming back into heat may be the result of an infertile or sub-fertile bull. All bulls should be monitored for injury or lameness that may compromise their breeding capability. Management after the breeding season. Following breeding season, young bulls need a relatively high plane of nutrition to replenish their condition and meet demands for their continued growth. Yearling bulls should be maintained in a separate lot from mature bulls, so these additional nutritional requirements can be provided. The body condition and projected mature size of the bull will determine his nutrient requirements during the nine months following the breeding season. Be sure to isolate bulls from cows after the breeding season, and provide winter cover from extreme weather that may cause frostbite to the scrotum resulting in decreased fertility. All herd bulls should receive breeding soundness exams (BSE) to assure fertility on an annual basis. Assess the bull battery well in advance of the breeding season, so that new herd sires can be acquired in a timely fashion. -- Scott P. Greiner, Virginia Tech Extension

The Jim Strickland Family will be donating the entire sale proceeds from one of our sale bulls to the Tattnall

County Young Farmers Association.

Doc always wanted young people to get involved in agriculture and was always ready to help in any way he could. He liked nothing better than a good livestock

event. He loved life and he especially loved young people.

Some of Doc’s quotations

“If they work hard enough with their livestock project, they won’t have enough energy left to get into much trouble.”

“Raise that bid on up there, it’s going for the best cause in the world.”

“How one handles competition is a big part of growing up.”

The Strickland Family asks for your continued support in promoting the future of agriculture.
