Anthony McGill, clarinetAnthony McGill, principal clar-

inetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, has quickly earned thereputation of being one of classicalmusic’s finest solo, chamber, and orchestral musicians.

On January 20, 2009, McGill per-formed “Air and Simple Gifts” byJohn Williams with Yo-Yo Ma,Itzhak Perlman, and Gabriela Mon-

tero at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. In2000, McGill was a winner of the highly prestigious AveryFisher Career Grant.

As a distinguished chamber musician, McGill has per-formed at the Marlboro Music Festival, Sarasota Festival, LaMusica, Tanglewood, and Music@Menlo. He is also a mem-ber of the newly formed Schumann Trio with violist MichaelTree and pianist Anna Polonsky.

McGill has collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Mi-dori, Lang Lang, Yefim Bronfman, and Gil Shaham, as wellas the Guarneri, Tokyo, Miami, Miró, and Daedalus quartets.He has performed throughout the United States, Europe,and Asia with artists including the Brentano String Quartet,Musicians from Marlboro, Chamber Music Society of Lin-coln Center, Mitsuko Uchida, and Barbara Sukova.

McGill has appeared on Performance Today, NPR’s St.Paul Sunday, Ravinia’s Rising Star Series, and Mr. Roger’sNeighborhood television show, as well as at Lincoln Centeras a member of Chamber Music Society Two.

In high demand as a teacher, McGill currently serves on thefaculties of the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins Univer-sity, Mannes College of Music, and Manhattan School ofMusic Precollege. McGill is a Leblanc and Rico artist.

Youming Chen, violaViola Youming Chen is an active

recitalist, chamber, and orchestralmusician. He has performed on manyinternationally acclaimed stages, including Carnegie, Alice Tully, RoyalAlbert, Avery Fisher, Konzerthaus-Berlin, De Montfort, and NationalTaiwan Concert Hall. As winner ofRutgers Symphony Orchestra con-certo competition, he performed the

revised edition of Bartok’s viola concerto with Rossen Mi-lanov. He was featured on WQXR in New York on “YoungArtist Showcase” and at the BBC Proms with Sir Colin Davisas principal violist. Chen has participated in Japan’s PacificMusic Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Prussia Covem in Eng-land, and Music@Menlo. He is a former violist of the Gus-tave Rosseels Quartet and a founding member of the FaderPiano Quartet, who the received Saunderson Award at Cole-man Chamber Ensemble Competition. The Fader quartetwas invited to play at the Rainbow Room at NBC Studios andthe American Irish Historical Society in New York.

Chen’s teachers include Paul Neubauer, Toby Appel, Hsin-Yun Huang, Yizhak Schotten, Victoria Chiang, Alan de Ver-itch, and Ben Lin. His chamber coaches include members ofBrentano, Chester, Cleveland, Concord, Emerson, Juilliard,Mendelssohn, and Orion quartets. He received his MM fromThe Juilliard School, BM from University of Michigan, andhe is currently pursuing DMA at University of Missouri-Kansas City with Scott Lee.

Dmitri Atapine, celloFirst Prize winner of the Carlos

Prieto International Cello Competi-tion and Grand Prize winner of Plow-man Chamber Music Competition,Dmitri Atapine has been described as“a splendid, elegant cellist” demon-strating “an astonishing showcase ofvirtuosity” and a “warm vividly col-oristic touch on the cello and seem-ingly effortless command of any

stylistic device.” He has appeared on some of the world’sforemost stages, including Carnegie Hall and the NationalAuditorium of Spain. Atapine’s multiple festival appearancesinclude Cactus Pear (TX), Miguel Bernal (Mexico), Alde-bourgh (England), Great Mountains (South Korea), PacificMusic Festival (Japan), and Music@Menlo (CA). He is cur-rently the artistic director of Ribadesella Chamber MusicFestival in northern Spain. As a soloist, Atapine has ap-peared with Asturias Symphony Orchestra, the Leon Sym-phony Orchestra, “Arche” Chamber Orchestra, and theMichigan State and Yale university orchestras. Born into afamily of musicians, Atapine’s former teachers includeAlexander Fedortchenko at the Asturias Conservatory, SurenBagratuni at Michigan State University, and the legendaryAldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music where he is cur-rently a doctoral candidate. In the fall of 2009, a debut CD ofshowpieces in collaboration with pianist Hyeyeon Park hasbeen released to critical acclaim on the Urtext Digital label.Atapine has been recently appointed assistant professor ofcello at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Gloria Chien, pianoPianist Gloria Chien has been

picked by the Boston Globe as one ofthe Superior Pianists of the year,“who appears to excel in everything.”Richard Dyer praises her for “a won-drously rich palette of colors, whichshe mixes with dashing bravado andwith an uncanny precision of calibra-tion…Chien's performance had it all,and it was fabulous."

Chien made her orchestral debut at the age of 16 with theBoston Symphony Orchestra. She has presented solo recitalsin the U.S., Europe, and her native Taiwan. An avid chambermusician, she has been the resident pianist with theChameleon Arts Ensemble of Boston since 2000, a groupknown for its versatility and commitment to new music. TheBoston Herald praises her for “[playing] phenomenally.”

She has participated in such festivals as Music Academy ofthe West, Verbier Music Festival, and Music@Menlo, whereshe was recently appointed leader of the Chamber Music In-stitute by Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han.

Her recent performances include collaborations with theDaedalus and Jupiter string quartets, Wu Han, Marc John-son, Paul Neubauer, Andres Diaz, David Shifrin, Ani Kafa-vian, Ida Kafavian, James Buswell, Nai-Yuan Hu, SoovinKim, Carolin Widmann, Edward Arron, and Anthony McGill.Chien was named Assistant Professor of Music at Lee Uni-versity in Cleveland, TN in 2004.

In fall of 2009, she launched String Theory at the Hunter,a chamber music series at the Hunter Museum of AmericanArt in downtown Chattanooga, as its founder and artistic di-rector. Chien is a Steinway Artist.
