Edging, grinding and po-lishing of strippers, doctor blades and cutting rules

Strippers, cutting rules and doctor blades are pro-ducts whose strip edge characteristics represent a decisive quality feature.

The double-sided NELL grinding station of the series BSM3000-CNC achieves micro grinding at the strip edge respecting precise height tolerances.

The strips are pre-ground or chamfered on a JULIUS strip edging line.

Finally the strips are polished.

Levelling against waviness and coil set

For a lot of production processes, such as the treat-ment of the strip edges or the strip surface, the strip has to be flat and straight.

Coil set and waviness have to be dressed to guaran-tee a good performance of the further production processes.

The flat levelling machine of the series DRAP is desig-ned for vertical levelling of wound strip material. The levelling machine reduces waviness and eliminates coil set.

Deburring and simple contour at the strip edge

At pressing and stamping lines the burr damages the tools and rolls. To eliminate the burr, a strip edging machine is integrated into the line.

The edge is cleaned and the strip width tolerances are improved. The swarfs are removed by different swarf removal systems.

Mostly a deburring device of the series UNO is integ-rated into a pressing line treating the strip edges with one tool at each side.

Tube industry

If a slit edge is used as a functional edge, the edge quality of slit strip is not adequate to produce a high-quality product.

Less than 35% of the edge area is cut cleanly. The rest is broken and exposes the ruggedness of the slit, unevenness in regards to straightness, angle and structure.

Coatings (e.g. with tin, aluminum ...) and oxidation disturb the welding process. The V-shaped opening between the edges widens with increasing strip thick-ness and decreasing tube diameter. The cross-section of the two edges which have to be welded diminishes and the area which has to be liquefied grows.

This means that the area which must be compressed as well as the compressing force after welding have to increase. The weld setup grows and the weld seam has to be shaped at the inside and the outside of the tube. Modern welding processes – such as laser wel-ding – demand machining of the slit edge as a pre-condition for efficient processing.

The optimization of the strip edge is a basic condition to benefit entirely of the advantages of modern wel-ding methods.

A catalogue about strip edge trimming for the prepa-ration of tube weld seam is separately available.

Page 7: Strip processing machines by metal-cutting

• 7 •

Optimizing of the weld seam

Thanks to strip edge trimming by metal-cutting, the strip edges are steadily cleaned and straight. They meet requested dimensions and expose the inner structure at the surface.

The edges are treated at an adjustable angle so that any coating is removed and the V-angle is shaped to any angle.

The result is:

• less energy input

• higher welding speed

• less bulge

• less shaping at the inner and outer weld seam

• fewer rejections

• less strip width addition

• gain of material

• homogenous welding structure

• better quality of the weld seam

• better shape due to less compression

The grooving machines remove one or several layers of coating from the strip surface, so that the strip can

be welded onto itself and be transformed into hollow profiles.

Automotive industry

The suppliers of the automotive industry impose hig-her standards concerning the quality of strips and metal sheets which have to be reprocessed.

For the production of tubes, plain bearing bushes and for the car body construction it is important to treat the strip edges and if necessary to achieve a groove on the strip surface.

Often the slit edge has to be transformed into a func-tional edge. The burr has to be put off, a contour has to be chamfered at the edge and strip width toleran-ces have to be respected.

So more and more suppliers integrate a strip edging line into their production process.

For the production of cast aluminium parts such as cylinder heads, the edges and the surface of the workpiece have to be deburred and milled.

Here robotic deburring stations are employed.

• 9 •

Plain bearing bushes

Due to edge trimming the strip is perfectly prepared for the production of plain bearing bushes and half bearing shells. Even at a speed of 100 m/min (328 ft/min) edge trimming reduces the costs.

The line executes five operations: thickness and width

Deburring of die-casting

Aluminium cast parts can be deburred by means of robotic systems.

Precise and defined deburring is decisive e.g. for the machining of cylinder heads as die cast parts. The de-burred edges should be 0.3 to 0.5 mm (0.01" to 0.02") wide to guarantee a maximum size of the sealing sur-faces.

The robotic station is equipped with rotating power tools such as milling burrs and grinding pencils, grin-ding flap discs or brushes.

An integrated 3D measuring sensor for the calibra-tion of complete workpieces or individual contour elements checks the position of the workpiece during processing.

calibration, trimming of two chamfers at the upper and the bottom side and oil grooving.

It is possible to work from coil to coil, from slit strip packet to coil or – for long running times of the ben-ding and punching machine – from multicoil to spool coil. Equipped with NC technique, the line controls all operations electronically, even scrap marking with multiple axes.

Strip edge trimming by metal-cutting

If the slit edge is the operational edge in the final pro-duct, the condition of the slit edge is inadequate for the down-stream operation.

The Julius system of strip edge trimming by metal-cutting strips the burr from the strip edge. The swarfs fall into a scrap conveyer and are removed from the manufacturing line.

This prevents any burr particles interfering in the pro-cesses e.g. stamping or profiling. Edging of strip by machining does not alter the material contrary to a rolling procedure. The structure of the surface is un-altered.

Precise tooling adjustments and intelligent tooling positioning allows production of complex bevels and contours without affecting the surface structure.

The modular system

The edge trimming units can be combined flexibly and expanded or retrofitted any time due to the mo-dular concept.

In this way, a machine with one working station (UNO) can be extended to a machine with two (DUO), three (TRIO) or even more stations.

The module itself is composed in a modular method. All assemblies and components can be added and ex-changed in each module.

Each module incorporates 3 positions for tool or roll holders at each side. Tools and rolls can be adjusted and exchanged in any order.

By means of a programmable automatic opening the main supports and horizontal guides are lifted hy-draulically vs. pneumatically.

If the production speed is high and/or the swarf is thick higher energy is introduced into the process. A cooling and/or lubricating system will accomodate the higher strain.

The modular strip edge trimming machine can be combined with modules of strip surface treatment.

Strip edging machines

For high stress processing – new generation

The strip edging machines of the series BKB/S are de-signed for high stress processing with high material removal and produce complex contours at the strip edge, respecting tight tolerances.

Thanks to a new conception of support adjustment, the swarf removal is optimized so that it is possible to process with thick swarf and to remove a maximum of material in one pass through.

The positioning of the hydraulic clamping system in bilateral guide rails and the use of further cylinders have improved the capacity with the result that the machine processes without vibration, even at high-stress operations.

For heavy duty

Large cross sections and high productivity impose heavy stresses on the machining of the edges.

The BKB/Kompakt is designed for maximum material removal at each tool, which ensures that even com-plex contours with wide bevels can be machined on strip with heavy cross sections or hard material.

The spacing of the tools is further apart widening the gap for easy flow of the heavy chips.

The machine is designed as a double unit so that rough machining is separated from the finishing section.

Strip surface machining by metal-cutting

Some operating processes require both an edge and a surface machining before transferring the strip downstream for additional processing.

For some manufacturing processes (such as the production of hollow profiles) a narrow band of the coating layer is removed to allow the base metal to weld onto itself.

This is an ideal application of the JULIUS grooving system. Scarfing single or multiple layers of the coa-ting from the surface optimizes the welding process.

Tool positioning is adjustable horizontally, vertically and angle incline, therefore flexibly meeting any spe-cification.

If the strip material is very hard or if a lot of material has to be removed from the top side of the strip edge, it is advisable to treat the strip edge vertically. In this case a grooving machine of the series TRINU is used (see picture at the right side).

The Julius product range offers the modular series NU, DNU and TRINU as well as the groove dressing machine for the machining of the strip surface.

The machines of each series can be combined with elements of modular strip edge trimming.

Due to a compact construction method, the machines of the modular series can easily be integrated into existing lines or even retrofitted later as an extension.

NU

With one tool the grooving machine of the series NU removes a layer of coating from the strip surface. The tool can be adjusted vertically and horizontally.

The grooving machine of the series DNU is composed of two grooving modules installed serially.

The DNU/U machines two layers of coating from the bottom side of the strip. This unit is used when the groove has to be on the bottom side of the strip.

Accessories

The modular system offers options to integrate further modules subsequently and covers changing demand perimeters.

Tool motor adjustment

The TRISTEP features a motorized adjustment of the tools on the non-operator side – and if desired also of the tools on the operator side. It can be retrofitted later.

The use of a TRISTEP system is recommended for strips with a width of more than 400 mm (15.75").

Rail system

A rail system allows the edge trimming machine to be rolled in and out a process line. This feature is used if and when the center of line of the strip changes.

This system is used for example for the production of tailored strips.

Automatic centering system

The strip centering control repositions automatically the strip and achieves an automatic following up of the machine.

The system is recommended for strips with a strip width of 1,000 mm (39.4") or larger.

Measuring technique and CNC technology

Julius offers strip edge and strip surface treatment by metal-cutting in a closed loop. Strip width, con-tour and residual wall thickness of the groove are measured and automatically restored to preset to-lerance ranges.

Different measurement systems can be integrated into strip edge trimming and oil grooving lines.

• strip width and thickness measurement by laser systems

• cameras for radii and angle condition

• measurement systems connected to a closed loop with CNC control or installed as a monitoring sys-tem with signal alarm

• measurement systems for the adjustment

Tool holders

JULIUS offers a big range of tool holders for different applications.

Due to the modular system it is possible to combine tool and roll holders flexibly and to exchange them at any time.

The angle of the tools can be adjusted continuous-ly. The spindle is adjustable free of clearance.

With the tool holder type WZWV 9013 pro it is possi-ble to regulate and readjust the angle of the tool du-ring the production process. In this way, the waste of material is minimized.

Winding technology

Thick and/or wide strips have a stable cross section and easily absorb high strip tension.

Thin and/or narrow strips present a problem for recoi-ling or traverse winding

Depending on the previous processing the specific strip tension can rise considerably. The consequence is that either the strip cannot be machined or it can-not be coiled up to large diameters.

Julius provides traverse winding systems for a wide range of strip widths and thicknesses as well as multi-coil and strip tension regulation systems.

Strip regulation systems adapt the strip tension to the sensitive requirements of weak cross-sections.

The strip tensions and mass-forces which occur in the line are disconnected by a dancer. Different S-bridle systems and auxiliary drives reduce the strip tension to a tolerable level.

In this way, a strip processing line can machine a much larger range of strip widths, thicknesses and qualities.

The effectiveness of the line is improved substantially.

Traverse winding systems

Julius offers traverse winding systems at the re-coiler and the de-coiler side. Thus, it is possible to run in three ways – either from coil to spool, or from multi-coil to spool or from spool to spool.

Various traverse winding guides are proposed for different purposes.

The infinite variable spooling guide can be adjusted to different guide widths, therefore easily variable between different strip widths.

A fixed guide system is however recommended for weak cross sections.

The kinematic traverse winding guide keeps a con-stant distance to the coil optimizing in this way the accuracy of traverse winding.

• spool width: 100–400 mm (3.94"–15.75") (or according to agreement)

• spool weight: 1–2.7 t (or according to agreement)

• strip width for spooling: 3–80 mm (0.12"–3.15")

• strip material: all machinable material

• alternatively fixed or variably adjustable traverse winding guides

MulticoilWith a multicoil system, several coils can be loaded and processed sequentially.

• width of the slit strip packet: 250 mm (9.84") (or according to agreement)

• slit strip packet positioned coil by coil at the strip center line at the push of a button

• weight of the slit strip packet: up to 2.5 t (or according to agreement)

Strip tension technique

Some operational treatment of the strip (e. g. machi-ning of complex contours or beveling) exerts excessive strip tension for save re-coiling of strip with weak cross sections.

If so, a S-block and a dancer will regulate the strip ten-sion to a tolerable level.

Thus, even thin and small strips can be machined and subsequently traverse wound or re-coiled to big diameters.

S-block

The S-block either reduces the strip tension or ele-vates the traction during the rercoiling process. The strip tension is reduced at 1/5 or even less.

By adding further drums, the FZ reduction or as the case may be the FZ increase is adapted correspon-dingly. An automatic slip control is integrated into the S-block.

When the job is to machine the edges of strips with weak cross sections or to traverse wind a strip, the use of the S-block is strongly recommended.

Enlarged S-block for the machining of strips with sensitive coatings

S-block and dancer at the re-coiler side

It is possible to machine even strips with sensitive coating as Teflon for example thanks to the extended S-block (see picture here below).

Dancer

On the re-coiler side, the dancer displaces the scope of strip tension reduction. By this means, even strips with a very weak cross section can be machined and traverse wound. On the de-coiler side, the dancer dis-connects the strip tension from the coil body.

Levelling and brushing

machines

For numerous further operating processes (e.g. the machining of the edge and the surface) the strip must be flat and straight.

Edge bow, coilset and waviness must be adjusted to allow downstream operation to process optimally.

Julius provides different series for levelling, calibra-ting and cleaning metal strips.

All machines can be integrated into existing lines and be retrofitted at any time.

The vertical levelling machine of the series HDR elimi-nates the edge bow of strips. It is designed for narrow strips with a corresponding thickness/width ratio.

• strip width: up to 50 mm (1.97") with a corresponding thickness/width ratio

• 5 sets of vertical levelling rolls

• 5 sets of positioning rolls

The flat levelling machine of the series DR is used for slight levelling of strip material. It reduces the wavi-ness of the strip and removes the coil set.

• strip width: up to 1,500 mm (59.1") as a standard

• strip thickness: up to 6 mm (0.24")

• levelling rolls-Ø: variable depending on the strip thickness, number of levelling rolls: variable

• options: drive system, supporting rolls, pinch rolls, alligator system and wipers

The aperture roller of the series FW is used to calibrate the strip thickness with an accuracy of ± 0.005 mm (0.0002").

• strip width: max. 50 mm (1.97")

• strip thickness: max. 3 mm (0.12")

• drive: depending on requirements

The brushing machine of the series BS removes dirt particles from the strip surface. Both brushes can be adjusted and exchanged easily.

• brush width: 70–500 mm (2,76"–19.69")

• brush-Ø: 70–250 mm (2.76"–9.84")

• number of brushes: 2

• power: 0.5/0.75/1.5 kW
