It’s hard to imagine it’s March already due to the winter, or lack thereof, that we‘ve had here in Minnesota this year. Being that I’m originally from Tennessee, I’m not complaining although, I have missed wearing my winter boots this year. Here in SWE-MN, we have had a very busy season so far!

Our first ever Career Expo was a huge success with over 100 attendees and 16 companies. Thank you to everyone who helped make the event happen! In addition to this event, we also had a group of over 15 SWE-MN members who made the drive to Madison for the Region H Conference. Check out the VP Spotlight for more details and highlights from the conference. Finally, we ended the month of February with two great Outreach events that both had great turnouts and were a lot of fun: TechFest and Spark, Slime, Speed! Thank you to the MANY SWE-MN volunteers who gave their time on a Saturday, Sunday, or both to attend these events!

Coming up, we have our 19th Annual Professional Development Spring Seminar on Saturday, March 10th! Please be sure to check out the website to read about the session topics and speaker bios.

Wow! That is a busy season in SWE-MN!

Since we just concluded our National Engineer’s Week celebration in our country, I wanted to share some fun facts with you about engineering in our world today and in the past:

The word engineering is derived from the Latin word ingeniere which means ingenious.

In 1906, Alice Perry was the first woman in the world to graduate with a degree in engineering. She received her qualifications from Queens College, Galway (now N.U.I. Galway).

On December 3rd, 1992, Neil Papworth, a British engineer, sent the first successful text message to his colleagues at Vodafone; it said: “Merry Christmas.”

The term 'Computer Bug' was coined in the 1940's when an insect got into a relay in a primitive electromechanical computer, causing computer malfunctions.

The Hoover Dam weighs more than 6.5 million tons.

Also, did you know that other countries celebrate Engineer’s Day?? If you find yourself in one of these countries on these dates, be sure to take part in the celebration!

Argentina- June 15 Iran – February 24

Columbia- August 17 Mexico- July 1

India- September 15 Venezuela- October 28

Panama- January 26

Thank you for your commitment to the Society of Women Engineers and for making a difference in our world today! ~Lesley

SAVE THE DATE for the 2013 Region H Conference!

Mark your calendars! The University of Minnesota – Twin Cities SWE

section will be hosting the 2013 Region H Conference in Minneapolis.

Details are as follows:

SWE Region H Conference

Date: February 8-10, 2013

Location: University of Minnesota campus, East Bank

The theme of the conference is “Create Your World: Engineering Your Future with SWE.” There will

be a day registration option for those in the area who do not wish to stay at the hotel. For those who

still prefer overnight accommodations, all conference attendees will be housed in the newly

remodeled University Hotel (formerly known as the Radisson Hotel). All sessions and the career fair

will be located on campus within walking distance of the hotel.

The University of Minnesota collegiate section has a busy year of planning ahead of them. If you are

interested in helping out, here are a few options to consider:

Watch for a future announcement with their formal sponsorship packet. It would be great to

have a high number of local companies represented at the conference! There will be a variety of

sponsorship levels available for your company to show their support and get involved.

Consider being a session speaker at the conference. You can offer a topic of your own or choose

from a list of recommended topics.

A small committee of SWE-MN members will be needed to assist with the organizing and

of several professional themed topics for the conference. Watch your emails for a future call for

volunteers.

As the conference date approaches, there may be an opportunity for volunteers to assist with

registration check-in or other day-of activities.

Of course, you can all show your support by attending the conference next February. Watch your

weekly emails and future newsletters for more information as it becomes available.

We would like to congratulate the University of Minnesota collegiate section on winning the bid to

host the 2013 conference! It will be very exciting to host Region H in the state of Minnesota next

year!

Spark, Slime, Speed

SWE’s annual all age Spark, Slime, Speed

event was held on Sunday, February 26th.

This event marked the end of E-Week and

was held at the Science Museum of

Minnesota. With the weather at bay, and

a new exhibit opening at the museum, we

had outstanding attendance with over 600

participants. Compared to the extreme

snow during the Spark, Slime, Speed event

last year, our attendance nearly doubled.

Although the utilized museum space is not in the main traffic thoroughfare of the museum, a

perk of this area is that it is free to the public without museum admission. As a result, our

attendance was not exclusive to museum attendees, and many participants came to the

museum specifically to attend our event. Kids were able to get into the nitty-gritty with oil

spill, gum drop, spool car racer, and steady hands experiments. Everyone was able to take

home their creations, along with a few prizes in a super Spark, Slime, Speed goodie bag.

A big shout out goes to Erin Penne,

aiding in sponsorship from General

Dynamics; Kristina Wagstrom, outreach

co-chair leading the event; Amanda

Porter, newly appointed volunteer

coordinator; and of course, our 40+

event day volunteers! We couldn’t have

done it without you! A big THANKS!!!! to

everyone who helped make our event a

success.

14

Outreach TechFest

The Works' TechFest 2012 was an

outstanding success. Over 1500

attendees visited this E-Week theme

event on Saturday, February 25. The new

Bloomington facility proved to be an

excellent venue for all of the activities

and shows. The kids literally had so much

fun that they didn't want to leave. SWE

volunteers participated with one of our

favorite goopy hands-on experiments, slime, as one of about 10 all day interactive

activities. The event also included live shows and take home goodies. Girls, Inc.

On February 20, 2012 at the YWCA in

Minneapolis, SWE-MN held an Outreach

event with 12 girls. SWE-MN talked about

engineering and what engineers do, and

then did the ‘Straw Tower’ competition.

The objective of the ‘Straw Tower’

competition is to design and build a tower

that is 1) the tallest 2) can stay standing for

30 seconds 3) can hold a tennis ball and 4)

can hold a can of pop. The girls were give

50 straws, 3 ft of tape, scissors, paper,

pencil, and 45 minutes. The girls said the

biggest things they learned were learned

teamwork, communication, and the

importance of planning.

Outreach

Upcoming Events

The Great Girl Gathering

The Outreach Committee would like to let you know about an exciting girl focused event put on by the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys. In celebration of Girl Scouts 100th birthday, a huge celebration will be going on at the Mall of America Saturday and Sunday, March 10th and 11th. SWE will not be able to take a very active outreach role due to other activities in this time frame, however, the event will have a great STEM focus and surely be fun for all school aged girls and families alike. If you would like to know more information about it visit http://www.gsrv100.org/ or if you are interested in volunteer participation as part of a STEM activity please contact: [email protected]

Wow! That’s Engineering! Planning is underway for the Saturday Apr 21st Wow! That’s Engineering! event. We are still looking for volunteers to fill a couple of key subcommittee roles. If you would be willing to participate on any level with planning, in addition to or in lieu participation on the day of the event, please contact us at [email protected] right away. This is our largest event of the year, and we are hoping to reach 150+ under represented girls with a circuit of four experiments and interactions with many professional engineers. This event also includes transportation and lunch for the participants. Normandale has been gracious enough to host us for the second year, and in an exciting twist from last year, they have completed construction on their new student center which we will be able to use. All of our experiment rooms are newly finished and in very close proximity to each other.

SWE-MN Career Expo Recap

Fund Development

The first ever Career Expo organized by

SWE-MN was a SUCCESS!!!!!! It was held

on Saturday February 4th at the University of

St. Thomas. This event was an opportunity

for participants to find a new job and

network while enjoying beverages and

snacks. We had 17 companies attend:

Loram, Hormel Foods, Medtronic, ev3,

MN-DOT, Starkey, St. Jude Medical,

ALLETE, Nycor, Phillips Plastics,

Stratasys, Datacard Group, Target, CS

McCrossan, ACIST Medical, Banner

Engineering Corp., and,

Minnesota Works.net. Attending

companies were able to speak to potential

candidates and also provided positive feedback to

SWE-MN. We had 75 participants; ranging from

collegiate to professionals with a wide range of

experience and backgrounds. Many of the

participants liked the size of this event because it

gave them more time to connect with the company

representatives. We thank all the companies that

attended for their participation and look forward to

a continued partnership. A special thanks to the

University of St Thomas for donating the space

to host our event. Last but not the least; we thank

our volunteers for their time and effort without

whose commitment we could not have had this

event.

Call for Scholarship Judges

Applicants for our Section and Corporate Partner

Scholarship Program are judged by a multi-disciplinary

panel of engineers who are members of our section.

Yes, that means you could be a scholarship judge! It’s

fun, energizing, and really rewarding to read about the

exceptional women engineering students who apply for

our scholarships. Previous judges say they’re excited

for the future of engineering after learning about the

local pool of upcoming talent!

Judges must be members of the Minnesota Section, who

have no affiliation with a sponsoring partner company.

This project requires about 6 hours of time between

March 21st and April 15th.

I first became involved in SWE while a freshman at Iowa State University, where I obtained both a Structural Engineering and MBA degree. During my academic career, I was very active in my collegiate section, which drove me to become involved initially on the Society/Region level, then in a leadership role as a Region Collegiate Senator, and currently as the Collegiate Director on the Board of Directors. After graduating from graduate school this past summer, I was nervous to enter into a new chapter of my life, the ever so sought after ‘real world.’ I’m so glad that I found the SWE-MN section! The mentoring and advice, both at the section and Society levels, are benefits that I didn’t find within my school environment nor in the first six months of my career. Besides all the great professional development opportunities that SWE provides to help advance my career, I have been able to meet some great friends and look forward to meeting many more in the coming years.

Currently, I work for Barr Engineering Co. within the structural engineering group. Our group works on wind turbine foundations, hydroelectric projects, industrial facilities and many other complex situations for our clients. My job couldn’t be more challenging, fulfilling and rewording – I have enjoyed every moment thus far. I have been able to travel to some rather off the beaten path places due to our project locations. It has been great to see the culture and way of life in many of these remote places that I would never dream of traveling to on a vacation. These unique experiences have made me further open my eyes to new ways of thinking and understanding.

Being outside of the academic realm and in a professional environment has made me also realize that providing a solid engineered solution to a client’s complex problem is incredibly rewording and satisfying. Besides providing technical excellence to our clients, great project management and coordination is a key element to a project’s success. SWE has given me a jump start on many of these ‘soft skills’ that I have been able to practice as a leader before being asked to perform similar tasks on work related projects.

Over the last few months, not only have I started my new role with Barr Engineering and traveled quite extensively on business, but I also attended SWE events, wrapped up graduation, and married my husband, Jordan. In the little spare time that I do have, I enjoy reading, photography, golfing, scrapbooking, bowling and traveling for vacation. I’m looking forward to going to Boston over the 4th of July for my first ever ballgame at Fenway and am very excited about the opportunity to attend a Red Sox vs. Yankee game. It should be one great time! Best wishes to all! ~Allison Lunde
