Paul’s story

“The staff have such a ‘can-do’, encouraging attitude and are always cheerful. They gave me the confidence to do things like take the bus on my own, and I can see big improvements in my speech, language and walking.”

Paul was a detective and a keen photographer. In 2017 he suffered a stroke, and came to QEF unable to use his right arm and with significant weakness in his right leg. He had lost sight in his left eye, and had difficulty speaking, understanding and communicating.

Through a mix of physiotherapy on his arm and leg (including balance work, stretches and strengthening exercises), occupational therapy and SLT, Paul made huge progress. By the time he went home he was able to walk with a stick and make himself understood. He continued to attend QEF as an outpatient for 10 weeks. He can now walk independently, and is setting up his own photography business.

Jenni’s story

“All the staff [at QEF] are wonderful, from the rehab and nursing staff to the office workers. They’re always smiling and ready to help, and have supported and encouraged me the whole time I’ve been here.”

Jenni had a stroke early in 2017. When she first arrived at QEF she couldn’t sit up on her own, her right leg and right arm were paralysed, and she had very little speech.

Exercises built up her core strength, and within a short time she was able to sit up unaided. Her physio has included walking and stretching exercises, and OT exercises with a pole helped to strengthen her arm. She especially enjoyed the speech and language therapy, making steady progress, and can now walk using a stick.

Since her return home she has continued to attend regular physio and SLT sessions, and hopes to return to work soon.
