Pope Francis, in keeping with the theme for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, brings to the forefront the connection between the issues that migrants and refugees face and the message from the Gospel of Mercy. The challenge for all members of a Catholic community is how we view the treatment of refugees globally and in our local communities and whether our response towards migrants and refugees is grounded in mercy. Pope Francis says ” Today, more than in the past, the Gospel of mercy troubles our consciences, prevents us from taking the suffering of others for granted, and points out a way of responding which, grounded in the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, find practical expression in works of spiritual and corporal mercy.” To know who these migrants or refugees are, to understand why they are coming to our communities, to know their stories, and to be welcoming are ways in which we can extend our mercy. I offer the following question posed by Pope Francis as our reflection this week: “Migrants are our brothers and sisters in search of a better life, far away from poverty, hunger, exploitation and the unjust distribution of the planet’s resources which are meant to be equitably shared by all. Don’t we all want a better, more decent and prosperous life to share with our loved ones?” The recent St Vincent De Paul Doorknock Appeal undertaken by members of our school community last weekend raised approximately $6000. Our sincere thanks are extended to all staff, students and parents who were involved. Under the leadership of Mr Collins, the involvement of our community was greatly appreciated and this was recognized at our recent assembly. The generosity of time and spirit to assist those less fortunate and needy members of the wider Macarthur region is clearly a wonderful example of mercy in action. The Carrington Project, “Through Our Eyes” which operates on Tuesday afternoons, involves students volunteering to visit the Carrington Centennial Care Nursing Home and engage with the local residents. Under the guidance of Mrs Borg students have developed some wonderful relationships with the elderly residents and this work was recognized last Tuesday at a special afternoon tea. This initiative recognizes the links with our local community and assists students to put their faith into action through the nature of their involvement. All students and staff should be very proud of their achievements. Year 12 are in their final weeks before beginning the HSC exams in Term 4 and I ask that the school community keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Year 11 have a range of assessments over Week 9 and 10 which will lead to the completion of the Preliminary Course. All other students are encouraged to be positive learners in each of their classes. Parents of students in Year 7 and 9 would have received the NAPLAN test results and it is hoped that this will provide valuable insights into their literacy and numeracy achievements. Vol 18 Term: 3 Week 7

2 September 2016

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of the Magdalene Community,

Last Sunday the Catholic Church in Australia celebrated Migrant and Refugee Sunday. Pope Francis, in keeping with the

theme for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, brings to the forefront the connection between the issues that migrants and refugees

face and the message from the Gospel of Mercy. The challenge for all members of a Catholic community is how we view

the treatment of refugees globally and in our local communities and whether our response towards migrants and refugees

is grounded in mercy.

Pope Francis says ” Today, more than in the past, the Gospel of mercy troubles our consciences, prevents us from taking

the suffering of others for granted, and points out a way of responding which, grounded in the theological virtues of faith,

hope and charity, find practical expression in works of spiritual and corporal mercy.” To know who these migrants or

refugees are, to understand why they are coming to our communities, to know their stories, and to be welcoming are ways

in which we can extend our mercy.

I offer the following question posed by Pope Francis as our reflection this week:

“Migrants are our brothers and sisters in search of a better life, far away from poverty, hunger, exploitation and the

unjust distribution of the planet’s resources which are meant to be equitably shared by all. Don’t we all want a better,

more decent and prosperous life to share with our loved ones?”

The recent St Vincent De Paul Doorknock Appeal undertaken by members of our school community last weekend raised

approximately $6000. Our sincere thanks are extended to all staff, students and parents who were involved. Under the

leadership of Mr Collins, the involvement of our community was greatly appreciated and this was recognized at our recent

assembly. The generosity of time and spirit to assist those less fortunate and needy members of the wider Macarthur region

is clearly a wonderful example of mercy in action.

The Carrington Project, “Through Our Eyes” which operates on Tuesday afternoons, involves students volunteering to

visit the Carrington Centennial Care Nursing Home and engage with the local residents. Under the guidance of Mrs Borg

students have developed some wonderful relationships with the elderly residents and this work was recognized last

Tuesday at a special afternoon tea. This initiative recognizes the links with our local community and assists students to put

their faith into action through the nature of their involvement. All students and staff should be very proud of their

achievements.

Year 12 are in their final weeks before beginning the HSC exams in Term 4 and I ask that the school community keep

them in your thoughts and prayers. Year 11 have a range of assessments over Week 9 and 10 which will lead to the

completion of the Preliminary Course. All other students are encouraged to be positive learners in each of their classes.

Parents of students in Year 7 and 9 would have received the NAPLAN test results and it is hoped that this will provide

valuable insights into their literacy and numeracy achievements.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Rowe on the recent birth of their son Benjamin Stephen. We welcome Mr Anthony Burden

to the school as he replaces Mrs Rowe whilst she is on parental leave. Farewell to Mrs Dowdell next week as she takes

leave to prepare for the birth of her third child. Our best wishes to Mr and Mrs Dowdell at this special time. We welcome

Ms Loca who will be replacing Mrs Dowdell.

An invitation is extended to parents and students to view the major works for Year 12 students in Furniture and Design

and Technology along with Senior Visual Art, Drama & Photography works on Wednesday 7 September in the Learning

Resource Centre from 5.30pm – 7.00pm.

An invitation is extended to parents/carers and students to attend the Annual Magdalene Classics performance which will

be held on Sunday 11 September in the Mater Dei Chapel at 2pm - 4.00pm.

I recently had a wonderful opportunity to spend the day with Year 11 students as part of a Leadership Day as they prepare

to take on the leadership roles as Year 12 students in 2017. The depth and quality of these young women and men gave the

staff who attended a feeling of great hope and anticipation as we were able to view first hand their leadership aspirations

and capabilities. The results of this important process of selection will be announced to the school community in the

coming weeks.

To all the Fathers in the Magdalene Community I wish you the very best for Father’s Day on Sunday and offer the

following prayer on your behalf:

God Bless

Mr Michael Mullaly

Sheree Farrell

Sheree Farrell’s big dream is a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games. In the meantime, the 17-year-old swimmer is thrilled to be named the first winner of Campbelltown Catholic Club’s Sports Hot Shot awards. Awarded $500 and a medal earlier this month, she warmly thanked the club for its support. “This will go toward a few cosies and help pay for some big events coming up,” Sheree said. The new Sports Hot Shot award encourages young sportspeople to share their story online for the chance to win cash every month. Sheree – a Year 11 student at Magdalene Catholic High School and volunteer surf lifesaver at Bulli Beach is a member of Campbelltown Amateur Swimming Club, trains eight sessions a week (before and after school and Saturday) and has been selected in State and National development squads for both pool and open water swimming. Name: Michael Mullaly Position: Acting Principal

Q. What are you reading? A. “God Knows Grandparents Make a Difference” by Priscilla J Herbison and Cynthia Herbison Tamborino

Q. Why are you reading it? A. As a grandfather and father it is great to gather wisdom and knowledge from different people as they all have a different perspective in life. As grandparents we can face many challenges so I believe we should continue to learn. This book offers “clarity, comfort and encouragement as I move through the twists and turns of life’s journey”.

Q. Is reading important to you? A. I am always reading something and sometimes might have a number of books ready to be read. I find it relaxing and also good for my well being.

On Wednesday 10 August several Year 10 students took part in watching Buyan Tuluyan, a KidsView

performance. We welcomed an Australian presenter, volunteers, and two Filipino young adults: Daisy and

Moteh.

Daisy and Moteh both shared their experiences from when they were young children and explained how Buyan

Tuluyan brought new opportunities and benefits into their lives, for example the chance to go to university. The

stories they shared with our class group brought new enlightenment into the harsh experiences they faced, and

many young children in the Philippines face every day.

Throughout the presentation we were shown the adverse reality of poverty in the Philippines through statistics

and workshops. We all received a profile of a young child and were made to live in the standards people face

each day. We were confronted with hardships through food sources, business opportunities, law and health, and

soon became aware of just a minute fraction of the sufferings people living in poverty experience.

Within the workshops I learnt new ideas about poverty, social justice and children’s rights, as well as realizing

how very fortunate I am today to live in a wealthy country, with a loving family and a roof over my head.

KidsView taught me not to take for granted my rights within this world such as the running water that comes

from my tap, food in my fridge and a prodigious education every day.

Due to the day we spent with Kidsview and their volunteers I have gained a deeper understanding for those living

through poverty, and knowledge on what I can do to help those in need.

This week in Year 11 Physics we performed various experiments within the topic of ‘Moving About’. Through these

practices we gained knowledge in the areas of acceleration, velocity and force, in regard to Newton’s Laws of Motion.

We also observed the effects of gravity on acceleration by dropping masses which were connected to a pulley string,

attached to a cart. The heavier the masses, the faster the cart moved. From this we concluded that by reducing mass of

an object, acceleration is increased. By conducting this experiment, we proved Newton’s Law of gravitational fields.

It was extremely enjoyable to change situations and observe their impact on acceleration, as well as see Newton’s laws

in practice. Throughout the whole year, these experiments were one of the only ones that actually worked to prove our

hypothesis. We hope to continue our learning about the physical world and gathering more information to widen our

knowledge on the laws of nature.

Hopefully an apple doesn’t fall on our heads anytime soon (pun intended).

PDHPE: Accessing Youth Support Services

Most children and young people experience challenges and uncertainty as part of the growing up process. These

may relate to issues such as self-image, relationships and encountering various sources of stress. Youth support

services can assist in supporting them as they navigate their way through childhood and adolescence.

R U OK Day (www.ruok.org.au), which takes place on Thursday 8th September, is a helpful reminder to

check in on people as to how they are travelling in life by starting a conversation. In the business of day-to-day

activities we often become so consumed by what directly involves us and fail to pick up on cues displayed by

people we know who may be doing it tough. It is also a reminder of what support services are available in our

local community, online and beyond.

In Years 7-10 PDHPE, students have the opportunity to explore:

ways to practice accessing help

skills to access health information, products and services

how to identify and establish support networks of adults and peers

ways to support others to seek help

a range of positive management strategies to support good health and wellbeing.

Information Technology News

Keeping your MacBook Up-To-Date (Managed Software Centre) Apple and third party software manufacturers work hard to keep their operating systems and applications up to date in order to protect its operating system and the security of your data.

Even if an application update doesn't introduce many new features, and is just "improvements and bug fixes," it's still worth a download; it could prevent your MacBook from being hacked, and prevent your data from being deleted or shared with the world.

To make this process easier the IT department has set up a school based App Store called “Managed Software Centre”. Students have been emailed instruction on how to install the Managed Software Centre Application from the school’s server onto their BYOD MacBook.

The Managed Software Update, is an important solution to the smooth management of applications and updates. By using this service, it is possible for students to install all the applications that the school has packaged, and receive updates and new software. Installation of applications and updates through Managed Software Center do not require administrative privileges and will only work while at school. The application does not give the school any control or management of the machine and the application can be deleted at any time.

New Microsoft Office 365 The school has purchased a license for the new Office 365 (2016) edition. This is both a physical application that students can install on their BYOD MacBook to replace the current 2013 version and a cloud version of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, excel, ppt ect…) This software will only be available while students are enrolled at Magdalene Catholic High School. Students with iPads can access the Microsoft Office 365 APPS by signing in with their school user name and pass-word. The instructions below will explain how students can access their new online account and how to install Office 365 (2016). 1 - ONLINE ACCOUNT: The Microsoft Office 365 Cloud version works the same way as the GAFE

(Google Apps For Education), where students can work online from multiple devices, share and collaborate on documents

and much…much more. Students will need to sign-in to activate and authenticate their account to access the Office 365

cloud account/software. To access the Office 365 online account, use the link below and authenticate your account with

your school credentials.

2 - Microsoft Office 365 (2016) Application for MacBook’s. The Microsoft Office 365 Application can be installed through the “Managed Software Centre” as mentioned above.

MacBook Cases and Chargers Just a reminder that chargers are not allowed at school, students are expected to bring their MacBook’s and iPads to school

every day fully charged. The school does not have the facilities in classrooms to charge MacBook’s and power leads can

cause a serious WHS issue.

All students MUST carry their MacBook or iPad in a strong durable case at all times. Students that do not have a case will

have their laptops confiscated. MacBook cases are made of polished Aluminum and can easily slip out of students hands

and it doesn't take much to break the glass LCD screen.

Need a New MacBook

If you need to purchase a new MacBook for your child, please check the school website for the school’s technology

requirements.

The decision on the best option and size of laptop purchased needs to be made by you the parents/carers, as you will have

ownership and control of the MacBook. For more information visit the school’s BYOD website: http://bitly.com/

mchsmacbooks

Minimum Equipment Requirements – New purchase - The Apple 11 or 13 inch MacBook Air (11/13-inch: 1.6GHz Processor 128 GB Storage – 256GB preferable)

- Portable USB Hard Drive minimum size 500GB (for backing up)

- A hard sided sturdy carry case is highly recommended, soft sleeve cases, neoprene jackets are thin and do not provide

any protection if the MacBook is dropped.

The link below lists the pricing structure for the different Apple MacBook models currently available on the Apple online

store.

http://store.apple.com/au/mac/compare

IMPORTANT: DO NOT Purchase the coloured 12 inch MacBook” model, this has only one port and makes accessing and charging

difficult. This model is also very expensive and student would be better off with a 13”MacBook Air.

New model MacBook will be releases soon so keep an eye out for specials.
