Kaiser's new contract: ratifi ed!
Local 555 Kaiser members did an extraordinary job of standing together throughout this bar-gaining process, making it im-possible for management to miss the message: we will do whatever it takes to get a fair contract. Our Local 555 Pharmacy and Imag-ing contracts were ratified on 10/12/2018. At that time, Local 555 also ratified the new nation-al agreement, which was arrived at in conjunction with the Alli-

ance of Health Care Unions after many months of bargaining. This successful contract is because of you: your strength, your con-sistent participation in our ac-tions (including wearing buttons and UFCW colors in unity), and your rallies in front of facilities. Your ability to communicate ef-fectively on the ground at your workplace and to demonstrate an unwavering united front is an inspiration to all of us. Congratu-lations!
In solidarity,

I’m a deli clerk at the Washougal Safeway store #1687. I have 19 years as a union member and a Safeway employee and I love the fact that I have had the opportunity to work under a union contract and that my rights are protected. We have a good steward in our store and a great union rep, and I’ve noticed lately that we have become a tighter group because of the union. It's contract bargaining time again, we should all be proud of being union members.
APRIL KNOTTS, WASHOUGAL SAFEWAY
I am wearing this button because I need more hours. I can't live off 26 hours.
CASEY FITZGERALD, SAFEWAY 3136
Lynn is still looking fresh as a daisy after spending two long days in ratification meetings. As a member of the bargaining committee she has already spent long countless hours at the table fighting for even better benefits for her co-workers. Lynn is a perfect example of what solidarity looks like, and serves as an inspiration to her fellow co-workers.
LYNN HITCHCOCK, BAY AREA HOSPITALWhen Scott was 12, his English teacher in Montana assigned him to read “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair. The book had a lifelong impact on him as he immediately became a socialist and absorbed every work Sinclair had written. Although up until now, he had never had the pleasure of working in a union job, he has always seen where workers in his workplace could benefit from having a collective voice. Scott is now enjoying his union position as the Seafood Manager at Tigard Fred Meyer and his customers love him!
SCOTT CHANDLER, TIGARD FRED MEYER
Kayla appreciates Local 555 for help with school supplies for her daughter. She is starting kindergarten this year. This is a great way to help start her first year of school.
KAYALA BERRY, SUNSET FRED MEYER
I started at Bay Area Hospital in 2000 as a part time employee working as a Unit Secretary/CNA. During my entire employment I have been union and I feel that it is a great benefit to have. I would NEVER want to go to a job that was not a union job. I love that I have someone who will fight for me and support me in a time of need.

My co-workers and I just voted to ratify a three year contract with Kaiser Permanente. As members of the Alliance for Health Care Unions we agreed not just to a local contract for Local 555 members, but also a National Agreement that covers 48,000 Kaiser employees across the nation. Having an active campaign helped us win a contract we can all be proud of.

I am a proud member of the UFCW. What makes me a proud member is the fact that I am working for a pension when I retire. I am also very happy to have health insurance that I can afford especially since I was just out of work with a medical condition and without it I’m not sure if treatment could’ve been done. Job security is another reason why I like the union. I hope with this next contract negotiation we can look forward to more hours for us. A set consistent schedule would really be great, especially for those of us who need to depend on a certain amount of money coming in every week.
CANDICE McKEE, LAKEVIEW SAFEWAY
My name is Nilsa Cruz and I have worked at the Sherwood Safeway for 17 years. I was a Local 555 member before and loved the health insurance. I was unfortunately promoted to manager of my department in May of 2018. In September of this year, I am stepping down and coming back to the union for many reasons but mainly to get back on the union health insurance. Safeway’s insurance is not very good and too expensive for me and my children. I will be happy to be back on the 555 insurance. Thank you UFCW Local 555.
NILSA CRUZ, SHERWOOD SAFEWAY
We just recently completed our negotiations for our new contract. The Union’s involvement in this was excellent. With exceptional member participation and input, we are overall very pleased with the results. Our local representative, Michelle Jacobs, was superb in her role and her assistance to the negotiation committee during the entire process and afterwards as well. Without unionization our wages, benefits and working conditions would not be anywhere near as favorable as they are.
RICHARD EVANS, FIRST STUDENT
I am wearing this button because we deserve a fair, honest, and predictable contract!
TYLER HANNAMAN, SAFEWAY 3136
Knocking on doors in St. Charles, Missouri, Stephanie Sweet has a wonderful conversation with this lovely lady, home recuperating from surgery. She was happy to say that she was absolutely voting NO on Prop A, because she knows the value of Union membership.

It was a happy day indeed when Gabriela (Gabrielle) found out she was the recipient of UFCW 555 ABC drawing of a $250.00 gift card! When asked what she was going to spend it on, she smiled and reminded her rep of her twin 5 month old boys! Then she said “thank you so much!”

When I called upon to jet off to another city and knock on doors to connect with voters and have a brief but meaningful chat about 1) the importance of voting and 2) swaying their vote to ‘our side’; one of the first thoughts that entered my mind was...of course I’d love to.
Our little team of four pounded the pavement for hours. We walked and knocked through rain and thun-der and lightning. We were spared the hail that some groups experienced. (But not the humidity)
There is very abundant truth to the adage that there is strength in numbers. A lot of people carved some time from their busy schedules and came together to make change. How wonderful is that!
The lives of so many in Missouri will be changed, for the better. Perhaps forever. Because some of us stepped up, went outside our comfort (and time) zone, and knocked on doors.
