POT - TYPE BEARINGS

DESCRIPTION The VASOFLON series is a range of structural bearingswhich support vertical and horizontal loads and permitlimited rotation about any horizontal axis.The rotationalelement is comprised of an elastomeric pad confined ina cylinder with a close fitting piston and seals.The standard rotational movements are limited to 0.015rad.The sliding movements occur between mating surfacesof mirror polished stainless steel and PTFE sheets.The main features of the Vasoflon series are:- Capability of accommodating high horizontal / vertical

load ratios.- Low reaction to angular rotations.- Low overall height.- Possibility of measuring the bearing reactions.- Possibility of compensating foundation settlement.The Vasoflon bearings are available in fixed and slidingtypes.

FIXED BEARING VFThe fixed bearing comprises:- a monolithic base plate (pot) with a machined recess

which contains the elastomeric disc and the internalseal.

- the top plate which closes the open end of the recessin the pot and bears on the elastomeric pad.

- the internal seal which prevents escape of theelastomer material through the clearance between therecess wall and the piston when a compressive load isapplied to the elastomeric disc.

UNIDIRECTIONAL SLIDING (GUIDED)BEARING VUThe guided bearing comprises:- the monolithic base plate with the elastomeric disc and

sealing ring.- an intermediate element (piston) which fits into the

base plate and with the upper surface partially coveredwith PTFE sheets. A guide bar, which defines thedirection of movement and withstands lateral forces, isfixed to the element by means of cap screws.

- an upper plate (sliding element) with the lower surfacelined with stainless steel. A groove is also obtained bymachining along the direction of movement.

MULTIDIRECTIONAL SLIDING (FREE)BEARING VMThe multidirectional type bearing is similar to the guidedtype, the only difference being the removal of the guidebar and the groove, as this type of bearing has to allowmovements along any direction.

STANDARDSFIP Industriale is able to design and manufacturebearings according to the recommendations of variousSpecifications such as Italian (CNR 10018), British (BS5400),German (DIN 4141) and American (AASHTO)Standards as well as European Specifications (EN 1337).

QUALITY CONTROLFIP Industriale has established and maintains adocumented factory production control system toensure that the product conforms with therequirements, and to guarantee the achievement ofoptimum quality with regard to materials andmanufacturing process.

TESTINGFull scale tests on bearings can be performed at FIPtesting rig.The main features of the rig are:- maximum vertical load = 80 MN;- maximum transverse force = 7,5 MN;- maximum longitudinal force = 1,5 MN;- maximum dimensions = 2,3x2,3x1,1 mFIP testing department is also equipped with atemperature room for testing bearings at low and hightemperatures as well as with equipments to carry outdynamic tests.

FIXING SYSTEMS

FIXING SYSTEMSThe bearings are usually provided with mechanical fixingsto accommodate the horizontal forces. The typicalmethods of attachment are simple and adequate for mostcases, permitting the removal and replacement of thebearing via jacking up the superstructure by only 10 mm.When the horizontal forces are less than 10% of theconcomitant vertical loads, the friction between bearingand concrete or steel is sufficient to transmit thehorizontal forces. In this case the upper and lowersurfaces of the bearing are provided with grooves toincrease bonding with the epoxy mortar.

MATERIALSThe steel components of bearings are in grade S275 orS355 according to EN 10025 Specifications.Stainless steel for the sliding surface in contact with PTFEis grade X5CrNiMo 1712.PTFE for the sliding surface is pure polytetrafluoro-ethylene free sintered without regenerated or fillermaterials. The PTFE sheets are recessed into a backingplate and are provided with dimples for continuouslubrication of sliding surfaces to reduce friction and wear.The lateral sides of the guide bar in the unidirectionalsliding bearings are lined with low friction compositematerial, type DU-metal. This material consists of three

layers: a bronze backing strip and a sintered interlockingporous matrix, impregnated and overlaid with aPTFE / lead mixture.Upon request, other low friction materials can be used toprovide special characteristics such as dielectricity,resistance to very high temperature etc.The elastomer used in the manufacture of the potbearings contains natural rubber as the raw polymer andhas a hardness of 50 Shore A.

CORROSION PROTECTIONAll bearings components are suitably protected againstcorrosion in accordance with the requirements ofStandard Specifications.The bearings are also provided with an externalprotective skirt and a dust scraper for the sliding surface.

SPECIAL PROVISIONSEach bearing is supplied with a rustproof label to show:- supplier’s name- type of bearing- maximum vertical and horizontal loads- maximum displacements- direction of movement- year of manufactureand any other useful or required information.

STORAGEThe bearings are delivered to site fully assembled andready for installation.If the bearings are not immediately installed upon arrival,it will be the responsibility of the Client to ensure thatthey are stored with care, protected from mechanicaldamage, dirt, grime, humidity, heat, contaminants andother deleterious effects.The place of storage must therefore be under cover, cleanand dry.

HANDLINGThe bearing components are assembled and clampedtogether by means of suitable transportation brackets,yellow painted. These brackets are to be removed onlyafter the bearing has been installed and when it has topermit the rotational and sliding movements.Under no circumstance should the yellow brackets beused as temporary fixing device during constructionstage.Unloading of bearings from transport shall be done bymeans of cranes and forklifts and their handling shallalways be done using pallets.During installation, the bearings should be manoeuvred byusing the lifting eye-bolts provided in the upper plate.The bearings should never be disassembled on site inorder to avoid that the intrusion of dust and dirt maydamage the sliding surfaces.

PRESETTINGThe sliding bearings can be supplied with the sliding platepresetted in order to account for special installationconditions. The presetting values are to be provided bythe Engineer to our technical department before thebearings are assembled, so that the presetting can becarried out in our factory by our personnel.

INSTALLATIONThe bearings are supplied with installation drawing andinstructions. Since installation of bearings depends onmany parameters, such as type of structure andconstruction sequence, Fip Technical Department isavailable to discuss with the Contractor and Engineer todefine the most suitable installation procedure.

BEARING SCHEDULEFIP Technical Department is able to design bearings of anysize and for any load combination, by using a sophisticatedFinite Element Program.For the correct design of the bearings it is necessary thatthe Engineer provides all the data contained in the bearingschedule, such as the vertical loads N and horizontalforces H at SLS and ULS, the sliding movements v and therotations α.
