SpecialisationsAs a structural engineer, you could work with government, consultancies and industry, applying mathematical and scientific principles in the design, development, evaluation and risk assessment of the frameworks of load-bearing structures to ensure strength and rigidity.

Structural engineers ensure that the effects of extremes such as wind, waves, fire, temperature, earthquakes, blasts and human/vehicle traffic are taken into account when designing and building structures such as high-rise buildings, theatres, roads, rail lines, towers, bridges, dams, tunnels, and more.

Job OutlookEngineering professionals are in demand, not only in Australia, but across the globe. In a dynamic economic climate, engineers need to be adaptable and ready to navigate fluctuations in the job market.

All students are encouraged to take ownership of their careers and ensure they are building their employability skills whilst at University, to give themselves the best start to their careers, regardless of the job climate.

AN EDUCATION THAT TAKES YOU AROUND THE WORLDroderick Darling completed the Master of Engineering (Structural) and undertook a semester in canada as part of a study exchange program:

“Living in Montreal was an amazing experience, which provided me with an opportunity to take the engineering skills I had developed at Melbourne Uni and apply them in a foreign environment.

I really enjoyed my time at Melbourne. You get an excellent education, in a great environment, from passionate lecturers and tutors.”

Today roderick works as a graduate civil engineer with BHP Billiton in Perth, where he works in the construction and expansion of mine, rail and port infrastructure.

“Buildings and bridges always fascinated me, and I had thought about doing architecture, but realised that a lot of the creative work was actually done by engineers. In my current role I work with people from all over the world, from different backgrounds and with different skill sets who come together to create something new.”
