Jill’s Recipe for a Wonderful Kitchen By Jill Wolff, Jill Wolff Interior Design

There are many similarities between cooking and designing a kitchen. We find our inspiration for wonderful recipes and design from many sources. Magazines, blogs, websites such as Houzz, and friends and family are all valuable in helping us establish what we desire. The design process begins by sorting through our ideas, then selecting a style and a basic color scheme….once that is established our recipe begins.

SHOPPING Select appliances and plumbing fixtures according to cooking preference, amount of refrigeration needed, and any specialty cooking that is to be done. I suggest starting out with a wish list that includes everything you might want. It is much easier to delete rather than add once the design process begins. ORGANIZING INGREDIENTS Once the appliances are established we begin working on the layout of the kitchen. I enjoy working with the very talented cabinet designer Charlie Sheridan of CJS Woodworking and Design. We begin with the basics….where does the sink feel right-facing a window and the yard or turned to face the family room or breakfast room. The appliances need to be placed according to how the client likes to cook, I don’t believe in the traditional “work triangle”….having a more customized approach to placement makes the kitchen something special. At some point it becomes a practical decision, because however large the kitchen is, there are still restraints on the amount of appliances that will actually fit! This process can take a while….sometimes several passes are made until we create the perfect layout.

COOKING Next comes the fun part…decorating the kitchen. We select the countertop materials first. With so many choices, it boils down to personal preference for style and functionality….quartz, quartzite, marble, wood, and metal are all popular materials. Once we have established the countertop-we select the backsplash….a popular look has always been a white subway tile-a new trend is either installing it in a herringbone pattern and-or using a dark grout to give it a more industrial look. The use of beautiful glass and mirrored tiles provide a level of sophistication consistent with a more contemporary style. After our “hard” materials have been selected we establish the final color pallet. The cabinets are stained or painted to harmonize with the appliances and materials selected. The most popular colors of 2014 have been white, grey, black, and navy blue. As we move into 2015 I feel that we will see a trend moving away from the “all white” kitchen….steely blue grey, dark grey and black feel lovely and interesting. The kitchen is now almost complete….we have incorporated our appliances and all of our ingredients to make something beautiful and functional…..with the correct amount of style and personality to make it unique to each client. GARNISH The finishing touches can make or break the design. Light fixtures over the island and beautiful cabinet hardware really tie things all together. Customization of the cabinet interiors creates the ultimate in organization. Styling the interiors of glass front cabinets, not only creates order, but beauty as well. Careful not to overdo it…this is where we strive for balance and proportion.

Once all of these steps are complete, the outcome is a gorgeous kitchen that is functionally and visually delicious! Voila!

The Enclave at Century Woods An Oasis of Mediterranean Elegance in the Heart of Century City

CW Enclave, LLC acquired an undeveloped 70,000 square-foot lot at the corner of Century Park West and Solar Way.

The Enclave is an upscale community consisting of 10 individually designed Spanish revival villas from approximately 5,700 to over 6,500 square feet. The development is a cluster of courtyard homes located within the established Century Woods development, a guard gated residential community in the heart of Century City. At the core of each home, private courtyards framed by French doors lead to spacious living, dining and family rooms. How Flexible Are You? By: Karen Putman, P2 Design

Change is inevitable. As families grow and as we all get older (no getting around it), the wants and needs for our home change. Hence, flexibility is becoming essential. From a design standpoint, spaces with multiple functions or uses are quite valuable and are becoming a necessity in residential design today. I find that more and more homeowners are looking for that great flexible space or room. What is a flex room? Flex rooms are rooms or areas in the house which have a range of uses, or that could be changed at some point during the year. It’s usually a place in the house which is used for more than one purpose, for example an entry hall that can also be used to expand the dining room during holidays or for large gatherings. In designing for the baby boomers, generally we plan for an elderly relative who opts to stay with the family. A main floor bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and some sort of separation or privacy (for sanity preservation) is ideal. This also provides flexibility to use the space as an office, gym, guest room, or maid’s quarters when not used for the mother-in-law. Young families have the need for play rooms with close proximity to either the kitchen or family room, or to the children’s bedrooms. Sliding pocket doors or a charming barn door can close off any mess in an instant and still maintain a clean aesthetic. As the children grow, the function changes into a teen room or space where loud movies or video games can be enjoyed without imposing on the rest of the house. An open plan play room and teen room also has its advantages – one may keep a keen eye on computer use or play dates. Often times the open room provides wonderful volume and natural light to the second floor. Flex rooms are a popular and strong trend that provides versatility and added value to a home. Options enable maximum usage with the space given and allow for change of use as required.
