Stewardship Moment
“Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1
God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live. Remember what St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “God does not call us to be successful, God calls us to be faithful.”

OUR YOUNG GENERATION
The University of Mary has an excellent publication entitled "360 Review", and in the April 2019 issue I was struck by a review and commentary on the film "Darkest Hour", which is about Winston Churchill and his leadership of Great Britain as WWII was beginning. The article is entitled "Lament for 'Darkest Hour': Losing Churchill's Character & Resolve." It was not only a review of the movie – which I did see and it is excellent – but also was a commentary on how so many of our own generation of young people are in such a different place than generations gone by. This is only a part of the entire article, but I think the points made are excellent.
The American College Health Association conducted a survey to assess the physical and mental health of college students. From 2000 to 2018, the percentage of students reporting that anxiety or depression negatively affecting academic performance increased from 11.3 to 45.2 percent. Almost two-thirds of today’s students report “overwhelming anxiety,” – a 50-percent increase in just five years. Another marker of the acute increase in health issues is the doubling of obesity rates, which are strongly related to anxiety and depression, from 8 to 16.2 percent of students since 2000.
Parental overprotection and the pathologizing of every life obstacle by the media haven’t helped. To be sure, globalization, uncertain job markets after college and the ceaseless blurring of the future that technology creates make everyone uneasy. But compared to their grandparents – who faced the Great Depression, when joblessness and poverty were the norm, and then World War II, during which the loss of life or serious injury were likely - today’s youth has little to fear.
Yet many people of war-fighting age routinely talk about their darkest hour in terms of not having access to “safe spaces” when exposed to the “violence of words.” At many institutions of higher learning, including Ivy League universities, rooms are set aside to deal with student trauma when a speaker is invited to campus who espouses views differing from their ideology. They defend themselves literally by taking up crayons, not guns as past generations.
Too often, we, the children of the Greatest Generation, have performed a tremendous disservice to our children, which is being passed on in large measure to our grandchildren. Coddling instead of discipline and true love, inflated self-esteem instead of honest appraisal and unconditional yet uncompromising love, the illusion of endless choice instead of commitment and resolve. Indeed, anxiety is greatly heightened in a culture where one doesn’t ever have to really commit to a spouse, a career, a community, a life. Flux obscures focus, between which is an unbridgeable chasm of doubt. . . .
Today’s young people, who are products of the pervasive self-esteem and identity-politics industries, are led to fixate on inward preoccupations in an age of anxiety and the concomitant mystery of increasing mental illness. These are primarily symptoms of a crisis of meaning. Most of today’s youth don’t have early morning jobs to help support their family; they don’t believe they are integral part of something larger than themselves; they aren’t given relief from the burden of self in the service of others; they have been led to believe in the material world but, deep down, they suffer from the knowledge that self-centered, superficial realities are fraudulent. This nihilistic worldview has metastasized in less than half a century to create a spiritual ennui that is literally making our kids sick.
I know that it is easy to over-react and be negative and cynical about things in our modern day and age, but I do think there is something here to take a serious look at when it comes to how our young people are maturing into adults. In my 30 years as a priest I've seen a change in youth in just these kinds of ways as written about. Of course, we all have some issues, and there are so many good and solid youth, but there is definitely something afoot here in our culture right now. As a priest, of course, I believe faith (or lack thereof) has a definite tie-in. No matter what the underlying factors might be – and I'm sure there are a number of them – this is something for parents to take into account.

Last Sunday the rites of Sending, Election, and Call to Continuing Conversion were celebrated in the Diocese of Fargo. These Rites mark the beginning of the purification and enlightenment period for individuals involved in RCIA.
We continue to pray that God’s Word may enlighten catechumens Katie Lang, Travis Oelschlager; candidates Ryan Brandt, Rachel Braun, Daniel Johnson, Shawnia Klug, Jennifer Mauch, Alyson McGuire, Chris Needham, Matthew Perkins.
May we, as a faith community, be an example to them of the Beauty of God’s Word.

My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord: An Organ Recital is Sunday, March 15 at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Fargo. In this concert, Fargo native Benton Schmidt will present a collection of liturgical music inspired by the Magnificat, the Virgin Mary’s “song of praise” recorded in the Gospel of Saint Luke. Many composers have written organ settings of this hymn, and this recital will present those of Dietrich Buxtehude and Heinrich Scheidemann, two German masters of the Baroque era. The late Italian Renaissance will be represented in selections from an organ Mass by Girolamo Frescobaldi. Also included will be the Ave Maris Stella versets of Marcel Dupré, one of the greatest organists of the 20th century. Of course, no organ recital would be complete without Johann Sebastian Bach. This concert will begin with the exciting Toccata in F, and end with its companion, the mighty double Fugue. Benton will also be playing a shorter program of Bach, Widor, and Brahms at First Lutheran Church, Fargo on Wednesday, March 11 from 12:45-1:15 p.m.
