Board Report

In an effort to streamline reports and better communicate to the Board activities of the District
Support and Student Services, we have combined the reports into this new format. You will find
reports from the various departments in this report. We have also attached some supporting
information from some of the departments.
I would like to update the Board on initiatives that are presently going on:
CCMS Construction Project – The baring walls in the new part have been completed.
Drywall is being installed on both levels of the old building. The large steel beams on the
gym have been completed and the decking is being laid. The decking on the walling
track will be completed by the end of this week. We are waiting on the geothermal team
that connects the wells to come and complete that phase so that the well field can be
seeded back.
Athletic Complex – Things are moving rather quickly in preparation for the beginning of
the athletic complex.

K-WINN
We currently have 354 students enrolled. This includes students who attended Summer School last year, Lighthouse this year and students who come in for Early Morning Computers.
117 of those students have reached Regular Enrollee status (30 days or more in program.)
With the start of spring ball season, our average daily attendance has dropped to 65 to 70.
Our Kindergarten Discovery Science Club has been busy planting flowers in the pots in front of the building and planting the garden with Mrs. Becraft.
With the beautiful weather, we have been able to get in some extra Physically Active time outside.
Students have been busy planning our last "Fun" week together. We've had Free Choice Monday; Trail Mix Tuesday (to celebrate our "journey" this year); Movie & Pajamas Wednesday and Face Painting & Moving Up Thursday.
Coordinator attended State Training in April at EKU and has been busy planning for Summer School.
Summer School Packets
Champions Hayley Franklin, Coordinator
May 3: Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County helped with Parks and
Rec Concession Stand and will receive 50% of all proceeds made.
May 5: WIKI Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Champions was
invited and attended as members of Chamber. Business After Hours from
5-7pm at Butler State Park.
May 6: Community Partners Meeting at 12pm at CC Courthouse and Early
Childhood Meeting at 1pm at CC Public Library to talk about Champions
Sponsored Event for Panther Tots. Also, Champions worked the
concession stand for Parks and Rec again on this date from 5:30-7.
May 7: Worthville Town Hall Meeting, topic Heroin. Guest Speaker Dave
Roberts with Kentucky State Police. Coordinator and a few kiddos walked
around the city to hand out fliers in order to gain more attendance,
turnout was decent. Pizza was provided to each attendee and door prizes
were given thanks to The KYASAP Grant. We also had a Chamber of
Commerce Board meeting on this date at 12pm also at Carrollton
Downtown Subway.
May 8: Chamber Committee Meeting at 12pm at Down on Main, met with
Larry Curell briefly to discuss Tobacco Free signage. Made personal cell
phone calls with family members seeking addiction help and addicts in
recovery seeking further help. Handed out a few “NKY Hates Heroin”
Addiction pamphlets to individuals on this date.
May 11: Tobacco Free Signage Meeting at The Sign Shop with Larry
Curell and Vernon States. This was also the last day for Junior Champions
at Cartmell, we had a cupcake celebration. Also gave Mrs. Root a lock box
at CCHS for a family in need on this day. Champions events were
announced at City Council Meetings to get more advertisement and placed
in The News Democrat.
May 12: Chamber Membership Meeting at noon at Butler State Park
Lodge. Last day for Junior Champions at CCMS, we had a cupcake
celebration and played board games from 4-5pm.
May 13: Champions coalition members will work the concession stand at
Parks and Rec and will receive 50% of all sales to go into the general
fund.
May 14: NKYASAP Meeting at 2:30 to discuss upcoming grant
opportunities for our coalition.
May 15: Fiscal Court Meeting at 9am, possible heroin legislation
discussion.
May 20: Panther Tot event at Carroll County Memorial Park from 5:30-
6:30 in conjunction with Early Childhood Development Council, “It’s
Spring!” Sponsored by Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County geared
towards pre-K aged children. “We’ve got better things to do in our town
than drugs!” Champions will also be working the concession stand for
Parks and Rec on this day from 5:30-7pm.
May 21: Sanders Town Hall Meeting, topic Heroin. Guest Speaker Dave
Roberts with Kentucky State Police. Coordinator will walk around the city
to hand out fliers in order to gain more attendance. Food will be provided
to each attendee by Mike Humphrey and door prizes will be given thanks
to The KYASAP Grant.
May 22: Chamber Committee Meeting at 12 at Down on Main
May 25: The News Democrat Article Due, topic Town Hall Meetings.
May 27: United Charities Grant Due by Noon to Crawford and Baxter’s
Office. If awarded Champions will receive ~$2,000 toward 2106 Child
Abuse Awareness Event. We will also work concession for Parks and Rec
on this day from 5:30-7pm.
May 28: Champions for a Drug Free Carroll County Coalition Meeting at
11:30 at The Carroll County Public Library. Open to the public, last
meeting of the summer, no meetings in June/July.
May 29: Honors Day at CCHS, Champions Coordinator will present our 2
Student Senior Representatives (Natalie Abbott and Darian Skirvin) with
2 certificates honoring their work with the coalition throughout the year.

Energy Report Brian Linder, Energy Manager
This report marks the end of the third quarter. The changes and upgrades Dwayne made last
summer are starting to show dividends. Overall district usage is down 9.2% leading to a savings
of $10,458 through the first three quarters of this fiscal year. While the middle school
construction and milder winter have aided, usage is down significantly at the high school, board
office, and field house where upgrades were added last summer. I hope to finish the last quarter
strong and beat last year’s performance significantly.
One note; notice the extreme high usage in February and extreme low usage in March at Winn
Primary School. That was due to a misread of the meter, which is made up the following
month. The meter was over estimated or mis-read in February which lead to a much lower
reading in March.

Food Service Lisa Gault, District Nutrition Director
This is a busy time of year for everyone in the district with the school year coming
to an end. It is especially busy for the School Nutrition office.
I have scheduled summer feeding training with summer feeding staff for Tuesday,
June 2. We are instructed to do a review of the program, responsibilities, meal
pattern requirements, counting procedures, and civil rights. We also plan to review
the proper use of equipment. The preparation and serving for the open site will take
place at Cartmell Elementary this year. The Child Development Center will be a
closed site as usual. All meals will be supplied from Cartmell.
As usual, I have been out at several trainings lately. At the end of April, I attended
my annual Director’s Training and Meal pattern Training in Frankfort. I was also
at the annual Spring KPC meeting and training held in Lexington.
I have my monthly OVEC meeting next week.
We had the pleasure of doing the annual Academic Rotary Banquet this past
Wednesday evening. I had four employees step up to work that event. I think it was
a success! I believe the meal was enjoyed by all in attendance.
Shree Richter contacted the office about catering the Senior Breakfast on May 28th
.
I have not heard back from her to confirm that we need to order the food for this
but if she indeed does have the event the High School staff will be glad to do it for
her.
The High School was also used this past weekend by the Rotary Club for the
annual Pancake Breakfast. Monica Meadows was in charge of overseeing the
kitchen for the event. She received many compliments for her organizations and
help. I would like to thank her for her dedication to this program.
We have many field trips, field days, etc. to plan for as the year comes to an end.
Much preparation goes into these type of days on everyone’s part. Hopefully the
weather will hold for these scheduled events and the students will have a chance to
enjoy their lunches outside.
I have talked to Jack’s Catering, who will be providing the closing day meal once
again this year, to discuss the arrangements and details of the menu for that day. As
you well know the date for this event is June 5. Everyone seems to enjoy and be
well pleased with Jack’s so it was decided to continue that option. I’m sure
everyone is looking forward another closing day with Jack’s. We look forward to
seeing you there.

Health Services Carrie Smith, Coordinator
STUDENTS
Health Services has been extremely busy with field trips and new health issues. To date, our
Health Services has seen 15,700 students this year. The majority of our visits are major health
concerns. The day of handing out band aids and caring for minor issues are minimal. We have, at
this time 13 students who have seizure disorders, many of which have frequent seizures (approx..
6). We have 10 diabetics (1 I just found out about yesterday while assisting with Sports
Physicals) and several more serious illnesses. I am currently updating our health issues in IC then
I will be able to give accurate numbers.
Recently, our schools went to Washington D.C and NY. All healthcare needs were taken care of
and students had a good time. We are advertising for an RN to do field trips. I believe we could
also get by with an LPN. Personally I would like to stay in the district so I don’t get behind,
however, If I cont. to go on the 2 out of state trips, I am salary and would cost less for the district
and LPN can stay at the CCHS to cover for me. I am open for whatever benefits our school the
most, just a thought.
FORMS
We have several issues every year getting forms completed and returned such as : physicals,
immunizations, health information ( this is a big issue because if we don’t know the student has
an inhaler or is a Diabetic or allergies etc., then we can’t be prepared to assist them) and so on. I
am working on several forms to pass out to student’s at the end of the year and beginning of year
as reminders. Below is a sample of one form:

For All Parents/Guardians
q Make sure immunizations are up-to-date.
q Review hygiene tips to prevent the spread of infections.
q Establish a bedtime and wake-up time to ensure adequate and consistent sleep.
q Develop a routine for homework and afterschool activities.
q Eat breakfast each day at home or at school.
q Help make appropriate clothing choices (for example, wear comfortable and safe shoes).
q Keep an open line of communication with your child to ensure that he/she remains safe at
school. If a concern arises (such as bullying), contact the appropriate school officials
immediately.
q Get involved! Sign up for the parent organization (PTA/PTO), school Wellness Committee,
and mark events such as back-to-school night and parent/teacher meetings on your
calendar.
q Ask about the school or district’s wellness policy (for example, how does the school
address nutrition, activity, stress and mental health concerns).
q Advocate for your child to have a school nurse all day, every day by communicating this
message to school administrators and decision-makers.
If Your Student Has a Health Concern
q Make your child’s health concern known to the school and school nurse.
q Introduce yourself and your child to the school nurse.
q Bring current signed healthcare provider orders for treatments and all medications to be
given at school. Bring the medication in the original pharmacy container.
q Together with the school nurse and other appropriate school officials, and family develop
an individualized healthcare plan (or other educational plans, as needed, e.g., 504, IEP).
q Give permission for the school nurse to communicate with your family’s healthcare
provider.
q Provide parent/guardian contact information and update the school with any changes.
q Ask if non-nurses will be providing care (for example, verify who will administer
medication) and how these authorized individuals will be supervised.
q Confirm the school’s disaster/emergency plan. Make sure your child’s medication and/or
medical devices (epinephrine auto-injectors, asthma inhalers, insulin, etc.) will be readily
available in an emergency.
q Let the school know how important it is to have a full-time registered school nurse in the
building all day, every day.
I am still tweaking this form as well. I am getting with Mr. Curell to update our health policies as
well do to several changes and updates in Health Services policies. As a group our school nurses
try to keep student’s in school as whenever possible. That is one of our major goals.
SAFETY
My nurses and I are finding students are still coming to school with medications on them. Some
have purchased them some are given to the students by parents or family. They are told to keep it
in their pocket and use it when needed. This is a major concern to me. We have already had
students overdosing and/or having to go to the hospital for harm to themselves. Some are
bringing in controlled medications as well and we have no knowledge of it until someone sees
them or someone else gets ahold of the medication. Huge safety concern for ALL of our kiddos.
Even an inhaler could be detrimental to a student who doesn’t have a medical need. This is
another reason I am working on health info. forms for parents.
Certification
I am currently looking into becoming a Certified School Nurse. From what I understand this will
allow me to perform physicals in our schools. If this is true it would help greatly with getting
some of our forms in at the beginning of the year. Health Services has an audit every year of our
health exams and screenings. Every year no matter how hard we try our numbers are not going
up like I would like , because we don’t have all of our forms turned in from home. Working on
increasing our numbers.
Maintenance Dwayne Smith, Maintenance Director
Maintenance along with the help of the Ag. Students poured 14 yards of concrete in the head
house and sidewalk to the pavement in front of the green house which will be the new store front
and storage for the green house next year. There was a major water leak in front of the first base
dug out on the softball field, this required high pressure mechanical fittings to resolve but is back
in operation. Dirt has been put around the tennis court parking area and seeded to finish out that
project. The new doors are in at the A.T.C. and that project will soon be complete. The addition
to the HVAC system will start within the next two weeks. I am currently scheduling summer
projects and paint projects. The tech storage building has been relocated to the back of High
School to make way for the new sports complex. Several roof leaks have been addressed after
winter weather. The baseball field 3rd
base bleacher area has a new straight step poured in
concrete to take out the offset and eliminate a trip hazard. Work orders are addressed daily still
maintaining a 24hr rollover when possible.

Transportation Nadena Mahoney, Transportation Director
We have a driver for every route at this time. Transportation is stay needing 2 full time subs. If
you know someone that would be good at driving and with our children send them our way.
I have started working on our 4 required professional days. I am also looking for places to go
that will hold all the drivers. It is hard to find a place due to the number of people that works out
of the garage.
