HHS Pre-IB Introductory Statement
Humble High School has a long-standing history of affording students the opportunity to earn college credits through multiple advanced academic courses.
Although the academic needs of many of our students have been met by a myriad of course offerings over several decades, the competitive nature of admission into
post-secondary institutions, as well as the ever-changing skill set that employers value in the global marketplace, requires preparation that is rigorous, varied and universally accepted as the gold standard in secondary school settings.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, only offered at HHS, serves as our signature advanced academic program. It provides students the opportunity
to earn the prestigious IB Diploma, which is recognized worldwide. Many universities world-wide accept credits for favorable IB exam scores, in addition, students earning the IB Diploma are guaranteed a minimum of 24 hours of college
credit if attending a public college or university in Texas, Florida, Colorado, or California.
Beginning during the 2014-15 school year, our advanced academic course offerings will be streamlined to reflect the specialized nature of our campus. All students will have access to our IB Diploma courses, as either a diploma candidate or certificate
student. Pre-IB classes will be offered as the primary advanced academic preparatory course for our incoming class of 9th graders. Pre-AP (Advanced
Placement) courses will no longer be offered to students upon entry into grade 9. The adoption of Pre-IB courses reinforces the desire for our students to gain exposure to the unique advanced academic offerings and experiences available only
at HHS. Incoming 9th grades who have previously selected Pre-AP coursework have automatically been enrolled in a Pre-IB equivalent.
In addition to rigorous coursework, these Pre-IB courses will focus on encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills, to learn how to learn and to participate in community service. More information
regarding this change will be communicated to current 8th graders zoned to attend HHS through their respective campus counseling staff as well as at our annual
Freshmen Orientation Night, which will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 @ 6:30pm.

IB Glossary
Anticipated Candidate (AC): an 11
th grade Diploma Program (DP) student is referred
as an Anticipated Candidate
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS): all Diploma Program students must complete the
18 month program and achieve all 8 learning outcomes
Course Certificate Student: any 11th
or 12th
grade student taking between one (1) and
seven (7) DP courses, without the requirement of CAS, EE, or TOK (not pursuing the IB DP
Diploma).
Diploma Candidate (DC): a 12th grade DP student is referred as a Diploma Candidate
Extended Essay (EE): all Diploma students must complete a 4000 word Extended
Essay by the fall of the senior year. The essay topic is self-selected and approved by the EE
Coordinator. A research mentor is assigned to each student.
External Examinations: External Examinations take place in May of each year and are
predominantly taken by seniors. Diploma students complete three (3) Higher Level exams
and three (3) Standard Level exams. Each exam can consist of up to 3 separate
tests/exams/papers. Exam registration is completed the November prior to the exam session
(the IB coordinator completes this process)
Higher Level (HL): Each DP student must take three (3) Higher Level exams to earn
the IB Diploma. As of 2014, HHS offers the following HL exams: English Literature,
History of The Americas, Psychology, Spanish Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, and Dance.
Internal Examinations (IA): Each IB Diploma course requires completion of Internal
Assessments. These assessments are required by the IB, moderated by the IB but not
supplied by the IB. Each teacher will follow IA requirements in terms of format and
curriculum; however, the assessment is done during the school year and is designed by the
individual teacher.
Standard Level (SL): Each DP student must take three (3) Standard Level exams to
earn the IB Diploma. As of 2014, HHS offers the following SL exams: English Literature,
History of The Americas, Psychology, Spanish Language, French Language, Biology,
Chemistry, Environmental Systems & Societies, Physics, Mathematics, Mathematical
Studies, Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, and Dance.

IB Glossary Continued
Theory of Knowledge (TOK): two-year/100 hour course required of all IB Diploma
students. Students take TOK though a hybrid course after school hours (9th
period) and online.
Earning an IB Certificate: A student may earn a certificate for each subject in which they
score a 4 or above on the IB exam.
Earning the IB Diploma: Students need to accumulate 24 points in order to earn an IB
Diploma. The highest potential overall score a student can attain in IB is 45 points. This is made
up of the six exams, totaling a possible 42 points (7 points per exam). The final three points are
from the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). IB exams are scored on a scale
of 1-7; a score of 4 is considered passing.
This is the scoring matrix below is used to determine TOK and EE points. As seen on the matrix,
the maximum number of points granted to a student for TOK/EE is 3; when combined with
maximum possible on exams adds up to 45 points. For example, a student who receives an “A”
for TOK and a “C” for EE will be given 2 points. “E” level performance on both TOK/EE would
gain the student an “F”, which would result in the student failing the DP program even if all
exam scores added up to the 24 minimum required points.
