Message from the Dean Student Awards Ceremony

Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is pioneering innovations, treatments and therapies that change the world. As Monash University’s largest research faculty, we are a leading provider of healthcare education in Australia and passionate about building the medical workforce of the future globally.

We are proud of our teaching staff who are at the forefront of innovation and groundbreaking research, often fulfilling the role of academic and clinician at the same time. Their goal is not only to educate and train the next generation of world-class health professionals, but also to inspire them to become leaders that educate and mentor others in their professorial fields.

The annual Student Awards Ceremony is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of some of our best and brightest students for their outstanding academic performance in the previous year. Many recipients of these awards will go on to be future leaders in research, clinical practice, policy formulation, health services and academia.

This award is generously sponsored by Mr Anthony Lyons, husband of the late Moyra Lyons. Moyra Isabel Lyons (nee Buick), was born in Dundee Scotland in March 1950 and passed away in Melbourne in 2014, following

a long battle with leukaemia. In her 64 years, Moyra lived an extraordinary life distinguished by professional achievement, extensive travel, a generosity of spirit and a genuine love of life that she shared with all those around her. She met her husband Anthony Lyons at St Andrews, Scotland in 1990 while Anthony was on holidays and within three years, in November 1993, Moyra had moved to Australia and she and Anthony were married. The Moyra Lyons Nursing Award recognizes the exemplary care Moyra received from the wonderful nurses who cared for her during her four-year battle with leukaemia. In dedicating this nursing award to Moyra’s memory, her husband Anthony’s bequest establishes two prizes to support nursing students.

$1000 awarded to each of the two students who have completed a subject or clinical placement in palliative care who demonstrate commitment, endurance, care and perseverance as assessed by a selection committee.

Associate Prof Claire Palermo

Claire is the Deputy Director of Monash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education (MCSHE) and an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) and Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food with research interests in the education of the future workforce and strategies to improve access to nutritious food. Claire is an active member of the profession of dietetics having served on the board of directors from 2007 to 2011 and is an ongoing Member of Dietitians Association Australia (DAA) and Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA). She was awarded a Dietitians Association of Australia National Outstanding Contribution Award (2007) and Monash Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2009) and was the first dietitian and member of Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences to be awarded a national Office for Learning and Teaching fellowship. This work has aimed to transform approaches to competency-based assessment in dietetics through a national Community of Practice for dietetics educators and applying a systems thinking lens to competency-based assessment in the Dietetics program at Monash. Claire was the first recipient of a National Australian Government Department of Education and Training Teaching Citation award in 2016 and an award for teaching excellence in 2017.

Named in honour of Pamela Kirke, who was the Monash University Occupational Therapy program Clinical Fieldwork Coordinator for many years. She demonstrated a steadfast commitment to delivering a valuable and enriching clinical fieldwork experience for Monash students, leading to the fine program that exists today. Pamela also initiated a profession-wide forum via Occupational Therapy Australia in Victoria where clinical fieldwork educators came together to share best practice fieldwork models, and to coordinate experiences to ensure that each and every student was given the best fieldwork learning opportunity possible.

OTA’s initiative to re-name this award in Pamela’s memory is a testament to the many hours that Pamela devoted to this important component in our profession’s education for future clinicians.

Stella Crossley Prize

Named in honour of Emeritus Professor Stella Crossley who joined the Department of Psychology as a lecturer in 1969. During her Monash career, Stella acted as Head of the Department and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science, and was awarded the title of Professor and later Emeritus Professor. She contracted multiple sclerosis in 1975, but did not retire from full-time academia until 1997. Even then she continued teaching and fostering postgraduate students up to a few weeks before her death.

where he served as Deputy Director of the Centre for more than 20 years.
