2. Rationale:
In accordance with legislation concerning dress code procedure in public schools under the Education Act, Urrbrae Agricultural
High School’s Council, with support from the Principal and the school community, has adopted a Dress Code Procedure. The
term “dress code” covers both the general school and the specialist area dress codes (Industrial Zones, Agricultural and PE). It is
the expectation that all Urrbrae students will comply with the dress code upon acceptance of enrolment.
The school dress code is a visible representation of the standards expected of students and plays an important role in promoting
a positive image of the school.
It also creates a sense of identity and pride among the students and wider school community, and helps students learn the
importance of appropriate presentation.
3. Wearing the Urrbrae School Uniform:
Connects the student with the school
Helps all children feel comfortable with their classmates
Contributes to students’ safety by providing clear identification of students in the school community
Projects and identifies students with the school and a positive school image
Supports students to develop a sense of identity and attachment to the school community
Reduces peer pressure and promotes equality amongst students
Reduces distractions to learning and creates a positive learning environment
Lowers long-term clothing costs
Develops a social and educational environment favourable to learning and acceptable forms of behaviour.
3A. School Uniform wearing expectations
The uniform will be worn correctly at all times at school. It is expected to be clean, tidy and in a state of good repair.
4. Non Compliance
Students not complying with the dress code will be in breach of the dress code expectations, and the school’s student behaviour
management procedure will be followed.
5. Community Expectations
Dress code is a reflection of school identity. It is important to make each and every student feel like a core part of the school and
school uniforms can play a role in that feeling of belonging. A sense of pride in their dedication towards the school dress code
builds a sense of community belongingness. Special additions to the uniform, like specific camp tops or Year 12 jumpers, further
create a sense of community amongst the students.

5A. Parent/Carer Responsibilities:
Upon enrolment, support the school in maintaining the values of the Urrbrae Community and any breach of the dress
code.
Provide their child with appropriate clothing that meets the school’s dress code requirements and raise any concerns of
discrimination with the school’s Administrative team
A diary note for any short term temporary exemptions (1-2 days). Long term (1-2 weeks) a note must be written to the
Year level Coordinator outlining reasons and the proposed time for the dress code issues to be resolved. No note or
explanation can result the behaviour management procedures being followed.
Ensure all items are labelled with their child’s name if appropriate
Refer to the dress code and footwear guidelines before purchasing any item
Purchase and encourage their child to wear the correct school dress code on school occasions
Contribute to the development of a dress code Procedure and any updates through communication or joining the School
Council.
Support the agreed responses to students who do not comply with the dress code.
5B. Student Responsibilities All students are expected to be in full school dress code every day. (This also includes school functions and representation)
UAHS expects students to wear the uniform during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when engaged in
school activities out of school hours.
Students out of school uniform and dressed inappropriately will be expected to change into appropriate loan uniform with
support from their Year Level Coordinator.
All students enrolled at the school have a role to play in meeting the dress code standards.
Students have the opportunity to be involved in the decision making and planning of the school uniform by joining or
contributing through the relevant student decision making bodies (SRC, Year 12 jumper committee).
5C. Home Group Teacher /Staff Responsibilities
Support, monitor and maintain the wearing of the correct school uniform.
Identify any issues around dress code to students and inform the student.
Refer students (and parents) to the dress code procedure in diaries and on the website
If no improvement after a reasonable length of time (see exemptions under Parent Responsibility), Home Group Teachers
give a detention and contact parents to discuss the issue and work towards a resolution.
To assist Year Level Coordinators, should they need to contact parents, Home Group Teachers should make a note on
Daymap of any contact that they have with parents about dress code issues (Use tab Uniform/Parent Communication
located in Daymap).
If you are a subject teacher who notices that a student is continually out of uniform, please refer to the home group
teacher in the first instance to establish what has been done to follow up the issue and any appropriate next steps.

5D. Learning Area Coordinator Responsibilities (Physical Education/Design and
Technology/VET/Agriculture)
Learning Area Coordinators will determine whether the student can participate in the class if there are dress code
infringements. (WHS)
Initial Dress code issues must be dealt with and followed up by the Learning Area Coordinator if the dress code is impacting
upon the student’s learning. Record the issue on Daymap under ‘uniform’
Students should not normally be excluded from class or sent home for infringements of the student dress code however,
the exceptions to this might include issues of safety or where students are representing the school

5E. School Council • School Council supports the implementation and endorses the dress code procedure and if they have any concerns they
will raise the issue at School Council meetings with the Principal.

items.

5F. Student Services Responsibilities
Student Services can advise parents on how they can access financial support if they are unable to purchase dress code items.
To assist families, schools should organise facilities such as clothing pools.
If the student is signing in late from the start of the day, and not in correct school uniform then the front office staff will make a
note on Daymap.(Out of Uniform under the correct tab).
Print out detention notices once a month or Daymap messages under the ‘Out of Uniform’ tab. Place in Year level pigeon hole
for follow up.

5G Year Level Coordinator
Inform parents through articles in the school newsletter, announcements at school assemblies and community activities
A school's response to a student not wearing uniform should be appropriate, fair and consistent. The Year level
Coordinator will follow up with both minor and ongoing issues regarding uniform Communicating the dress code to students and parents when required.
Provide to all prospective students and parents/carers prior to enrolment at the school the expectation of the school
uniform.
Consult with the Assistant Principal Wellbeing about consequences for a student for consistently not wearing the school
dress code in accordance with the school dress code procedure.
5H Senior Leader Middle or Senior School
UAHS will undertake appropriate measures to enforce their dress code in their student behaviour management
procedure. Middle or Senior Leaders will assist Home Group teachers/staff, who require support/advice if the problem cannot be
resolved
Ring parents if the HG teachers have tried with no response. (These responses will be recorded on Daymap to ensure
the Senior Leaders have documentation before calling home). Document on Daymap about the outcome before
informing the AP or DP.
Check if any exemptions are required around the dress code
Ensure up-to-date photos are supplied every year regarding appropriate dress code procedures (clothing and
footwear)

The Principal or delegate of UAHS may determine the consequences for a student for not wearing the school uniform in
accordance with the school dress code. This will occur after the HG teacher and Year Level Coordinator’s have
documented the strategies tried to date.
The dress code requirements must comply with Work Health and Safety and Anti-discrimination legislation. This dress
code will identify items necessary for particular activities to protect students from injury (for example, items for sun
protection or safe footwear).
Work with the school community to ensure dress code is appropriately worn at all time
6. Length of Consequence:
Check the amount of lunch time detentions complete or incomplete
Refer to the Behaviour Management Procedures in regard to increase in consequence
Suspension cannot occur due to Uniform but if a student refuses to attend lunch detentions, or Afterschool then a
suspension can occur due to wilful inattention towards the school.
7. Categories allocated Dress code process has three key areas
Wilful – If a student has built up a number of detentions due to uniform over a term. If a student has over 6
infringements within a term this will be classified as wilful
Persistent – If a student has over 4 detentions within a fortnight this will be classified as persistent.
Refusal – If a student is not willing to wear a provided second hand uniform or does not address the dress code issue
immediately then this would be classified as refusal.
NB: Students must be given 24 hours notice if they are required to attend After School Detention (see Behaviour
Management Procedure).

7. Daymap and EDSAS
Daymap takes the Withdrawal and converts it to a code TA. Daymap Withdrawal data is imported by Student Services into
EDSAS weekly.

It is an expectation that all students wear correct dress code which complies with the school’s dress code procedure at
all times. The diary also articulates that parents/carers and students understand there are consequences for being out of
uniform. It is stipulated in the Memorandum of Agreement, signed by your child and you, that your child would be in
school uniform at all times when attending the school.
All students are expected to be in full uniform and if not, students can expect a detention or extra duties each time they
are out of uniform. This is also supported by the Department for Education as an appropriate strategy for breaches of
dress code.
If there are financial concerns regarding purchase of uniform, please let us know and we can work together to ensure

It is truly wonderful to see our students back at school this week from school holidays and in the interests of consistency
at Urrbrae it is important that all students follow the school dress code.
Unfortunately, with the onset of winter, we have some students persistently wearing track suit pants and different
coloured jackets, which are not part of the school uniform, the wearing of which will result in students being given a
lunchtime detention, regardless of if they have a note from home about these.
Please encourage your child to wear correct dress code at all times.

Dear Parent/Carer,
Your son/daughter ____________________________has not changed into correct P.E. attire on two occasions this
semester. The Physical Education teachers have given personal and specific reminders to him/her about the school’s
procedure for ‘Changing into P.E. Uniform for P.E. lesson’s. He/she knows what is expected and furthermore -
agrees that these expectations are reasonable and appropriate.
The requirements for your child in regards to their P.E. uniform are as follows:
School P.E. polo top
Boys/Girls - blue shorts (Basketball style) or tracksuit bottom
Non-marking sports shoes different to their school shoes
Hat during term 1 and 4 (school cap or navy blue hat or cap)
The Physical Education teachers request your support with the expectations that we have at school in relation to
uniform and if necessary, help him/her with self-organisation so that correct uniform is worn at school. Of course,
we would be grateful to hear from you if there are any extenuating circumstances which should be taken into
consideration in the best interest of your child’s education.

Dear Home Group teachers,
As you are well aware a letter was sent out with the Term 1 reports making students aware of the requirements of uniform at Urrbrae.
Can HG teachers please remind students that a Dress Code Procedure is a dress code that adheres to a set of documented standards that are acceptable in relation to the clothing worn by students at the school.
I understand that some teachers, parents and students alike have expressed different views over this issue. However, HG teachers should reiterate to students that uniforms reflect the school community standards and expectations and these expectations at Urrbrae are listed on page 11 of the school diary. HG teachers as part of the whole school community have a role to play in ensuring the meeting of these standards.
As HG teachers you will see students in the morning which helps ensure the correct dress code for the day. I also understand that students may change once they leave class but at this point I am only dealing with any dress code issues in morning HG.
If you are concerned about a student’s dress code within the School can you please undertake the following steps within HG:
Speak to the student to encourage them to observe the dress code Remind the student about the Dress Code Procedure on page 12 in the diary Issue a Verbal warning to student. (Let them know it is a verbal warning) Communicate to both parents the issue surrounding uniform Lunch Detention issued Lunch detention issued for every infraction of uniform.
Can you also remind students that a lunch time detention is for any infraction of the dress code and it is appropriate for a new lunch time detention to be issued for each breach of the uniform code.
It is our responsibility to ensure adherence to the dress code of the school and take appropriate action in relation to wilful and persistent breach of that dress code. If the above steps have been followed, documented and communicated and no explanation given then we will use other strategies. We cannot enforce the dress code by the suspension, exclusion or expulsion of a student from the school, or by otherwise precluding the student from participating in the educational program of the school. (Pursuant to Regulation 86(6)) but we can for wilful indifference against the behaviour management procedures. As 2020 draws to a close I would like to take the opportunity to remind students and parents about our Dress Code Procedure. I anticipate that many families will wish to update items which are worn or grown out of over the holiday period. On the Urrbrae website there is a poster showing all of the items of dress and footwear which are included in our uniform. This poster includes text which describes the items. In particular, I would like to draw students’ and parents’ attention to two points:
Shoes must be leather, black and lace up, or black or brown elastic sided boots
All the appropriate styles of Dress Code at UAHS as listed on the website Canvas shoes are not permitted at school because they do not afford the wearer an acceptable level of safety from injury in a school environment. Shorts, skirts and dresses must be appropriate length to support health, safety and practicality for the wide range of activities undertaken at school. Please be aware of these issues when purchasing new uniform items during the school holidays so that the Urrbrae uniform is consistently applied.
