Mozambique is located in the Southern Africa region. In the north is boarded by Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi; in the east by Indian Ocean; in the south and west by South Africa and in the west by Swaziland and Zimbabwe. It has a total of 801.590 Km2 and a population of approximately 20.000.000. Mozambique is rich in marine resources, forest resources (wild animals, rare species of woods), mineral resources, Cahora Bassa dam (electricity) and tourism. Its official language is Portuguese, which is spoken together with more than 10 local languages, majority of bantu origin. Mozambique is surrounded by English speaking countries – Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, South Africa - and is a Commonwealth member since 1996.
The country has been colonized by Portugal and became Independent in 1975. By the time of the Independence, there was only a unique university, the Universidade de Lourenço Marques, which, after the Independence has been renamed Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, in the homenage to the founder of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), the movement which fought for the Independence of Mozambique, Dr. Eduardo Mondlane. Presently, Mozambique has 14 public and 12 private universities.
Eduardo Mondlane University is committed to be a centre of excellence in the educational, scientific, cultural and technological fields, educating its graduates for life and assuming responsibilities in the process of innovation and knowledge transfer and in sustainable development.
The UEM strives to integrate and assert itself in the global scientific community, and to be both agent and object of change and transformation of society.

THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICEOF THE EDUARDO MONDLANE UNIVERSITY
After the Independence of Mozambique in 1975, many lecturers, who were majority Portuguese, left the country. The Eduardo Mondlane University had to create an International Relations Commission, with the main function of seeking foreign lecturers for the University (from Russia, Cuba, Tanzania, Holland, Germany…).
Two years ago, this commission had been extinguished and created an International Relations Office, with the main function of recruiting foreign lecturers but also to create conditions to the training of Mozambicans to be lecturers, in order to fill the gaps left by the Portuguese lecturers.
Because of this policy, of training Mozambicans, presently, the UEM has more than 150 Mozambicans with PhD (at the Independence we had no Mozambicans with this degree). More than 90% of the lecturers at the Eduardo Mondlane University are Mozambicans.
At present, the Public Relations Office (GRP) of the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) has the main task of organizing, accompanying and coordinating the cooperation agreements aiming mainly at improving the cooperation relationships between the national and international institutions. Presently the university more than 200 agreements signed with national and international universities and institutions.
As a Public Relations Office, it also seeks to show the image of the University in the country and overseas.
The GRP is not a mere tool to materialize the UEM cooperation policies only as a beneficiary, but it is also a mean through which the University projects itself as a true cooperation partner, which also has something to offer in exchange. That is why our cooperation speech became dominated by expressions such as: exchange of lecturers, exchange of students, joint research projects, joint publications, etc.
The Public Relations Office of the Eduardo Mondlane University has three Departments:
Department of Cooperation with Mozambique and Africa Department of Cooperation with America and Asia Department of Cooperation with Europe, Oceania and International Organizations
