Quito - Ecuador”. There were 14 participants. The sponsors were Ecuacorriente and the Ministry of Mining. The first day, we were on the road for around 17 hours. The second day the visit began with an induction by security personal about EPP (personal protection equipment) and then an explanation of the geology of the deposit by the senior geologist Juan Leon. After that we visited the advances in the construction of the processing plant and the pit. After lunch we went to core shack and to review the drill cores.

We financed, together with EPN Geology Faculty and Ecuacorriente, the transportation and lunch in the Mirador Mining Project (efforts of the President of Student Chapter SEG-EPN).

volcanic cone with an avalanche caldera in the shape of a horseshoe open to the west. At the bottom of the caldera is a glacial lagoon 1106 m long and 574 m wide, located at a height of 4170 m; known as "Laguna Amarilla" or "Laguna de Collanes”.

The field Trip consisted of a 15 km walk in total observing the rocks that make up the Altar volcano. They have hydrothermal alterations corresponding to different volcanic events. The exposure of the outcrops is excellent for mapping and understanding the processes of mixing magmas, their evolution over time and their surface evidence. It was important to know that these processes were the responsible for the formation of a possible hydrothermal deposit in the subsurface.

Bernardo Beate (EPN Academic Advisor)

The international field- trip organized by the EPN Student Chapter and the UCE Student Chapter, both of Quito-Ecuador, took place during April 7th through 13th of 2018, in the northern part of Chile. Ten geology students of the Escuela Politécnica Nacional, the Universidad Central del Ecuador and the University of New Mexico, together with four geologists of the mining and exploration industry and academic centers as well as Ing. Bernardo Beate (EPN Academic Advisor) and Dr. William X. Chávez (field course leader, New Mexico Tech), visited several copper mines of northern Chile. The financial support for the students was provided by the Stewart R. Wallace Funding.

The copper mines visited in the field trip were Comahue, Chuquicamata, Gabriela Mistral, Ministro Hales, Mantos Blancos and Juanita. These deposits are principally hydrothermal in nature showing conspicuous oxidation and supergene Cu enrichment zones. All the geology and ore deposits setting was explained in most of the mines by the personal of the mining companies and by Dr. William Chávez, followed by a tour in the mines, in which in some cases, we were able to verify the cores and the mineral piles, where we could identify the mineral assemblages and the rock textures. At the end of each day, all of us met after the visit of the mines to do a feedback of the issues dealt along the day.

From northwest to northeast of Colombia was the stage of the II International Field Trip Colombia 2018, organized by the EPN Student Chapter of Quito-Ecuador; it took place during September 24th through 28th of 2018. Eleven geology students of the Escuela Politécnica Nacional, together with four geologists from the mining and exploration industry visited an intrusion-related type deposit and a Cu-Au Porphyry system near Medellin, and an emeralds deposits in Chivor, Boyacá. The financial support for the students was provided by Stewart R. Wallace Funding.

Quebradona project is a Cu-Au porphyry type showing mineralizations of Cu, Au and traces of Ag, Mo. Gramalote project is an Intrusion-Related gold deposit, which is structurally controlled and show mineralizations of Au. These projects are the major discoveries in the country. If this projects go on specially Gramalote Colombia will see a new Mining Age. On the other hand, emeralds formed from hydrothermal-sedimentary processes and the different alterations was explained by the mines staff.

carbonates. B-SEG-EPN Student Chapter members and Mr. Hugo Sanchez in the emerald museum.

Benefits for students were to expand the knowledge on mineralogical assemblages from Quebradona Project as to be hopefuly able to correlate them with the Miocene mineral belt of Ecuador. Furthermore, it was constructive to identify mineralogical assemblages of the mineralization of an intrusion-related deposits like Gramalote project because in Ecuador could be

4. Organization of conferences, workshops, short courses (theme, number of participants, benefits for students)

4.1. Workshop Geology of Ecuador.

On October 11th through 12th of 2017 the first Workshop of Geology of Ecuador was organized at EPN-Quito, with the participation of national and international eminences on the Geology of Ecuador. This workshop was entirely organized by the SEG-EPN Student Chapter and was aimed to reach the whole geology community of Ecuador. Mayor problems, issues and uncertainties were discussed regarding different tectonic, sedimentological, stratigraphic configurations referring to the Cordilleras Real and Occidental, Alamor Lancones Basin and Mineral Deposits. For this reason, the organization of this type of conference is a space to demolish dogmas and propose new solutions to geological configurations that are not yet deciphered.

4.6. TERRASPEC, Mineral Spectrometer

The course on Mineral Spectrometers was given by INIGEMM on 27th April of 2018. There were 14 SEG-EPN Student Chapter members and 15 Geology Faculty students. The course lasted eight hours and the different frequencies of the waves resulting of the reflection in different minerals of alteration in rocks were explained. The samples used were provided by the alteration rocks collection made by SEG fellow Prof. Bernardo Beate and SEG-EPN Student Chapter members (2017-2018) and exhibited in the Petrography Museum of the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN). This course provided us of knowledge that will help to recognize path finder minerals. Add, for mining exploration geologists, these improvements translate into faster data capture at exploration targets and select drilling sites. The improved data quality provided by the TerraSpec mineral spectrometer also allows for accurate assessment of low-concentration and low-reflectance minerals, like iron-containing minerals such as serpentines and chlorites, which were previously difficult to measure.

6. Fund-raising programs SEG-EPN Student Chapter got some own funding asking Geologists from the academic or industry sector to participate in conferences or short courses in exchange of discounts in future Field Trips or just for help. Futhermore, the Chapter gets funds from organizing Field Trips, Short courses or Conferences by charging a minimum fee to Professionals. These fund are used for expenses of SEG-EPN Student Chapter for tours, field trips, exhibition material such as I Workshop of Geology, October 2017 and the Course on Tampakan Porphyry, November 2017; among others.

7. Other programs

7.1. EXPOMINAS EXPOMINAS is a once-a-year mining conference, held in Quito-Ecuador, where companies of mineral and oil exploration and development, environmental and consulting gather together to offer projects, services and equipment and to search for investors. Heavy machinery and updated electronic equipment for scientific studies of different areas of earth science is also offered. Academia usually participates with presentations and exhibits. The SEG-EPN Student Chapter participated with eleven SEG members who collaborated in the exhibitions and talks to the general public during 18th through 20th Aphril of 2018 in Cumbaya, Quito. The discussed topics were about 2 of the main exploration projects of Ecuador, namely Mirador and Rio Blanco, as well as SEG-EPN Student Chapter participation in the Chile Field Trip (2018), mining concessions, methods of recognition of alteration mineralogy and geophysics of mineral deposits.

7.2. Collection of samples of HT (hydrothermally) altered rocks at EPN For many years the Geology Faculty had in its possession a large amount of hydrothermally altered rock samples but the samples were in a bad condition and unclassified. The SEG-EPN student chapter members successfully started a project about the classification, proper storage and exhibit of the samples. This Project was made by Prof. Bernardo Beate SEG Fellow 2008 and all the SEG- EPN Student Chapter members.

Now this collection of alteration rocks is available for all the students of the Geology Faculty, at the Petrography Museum at EPN.

7.3. Licenses Leap Frog Software The Student Chapter SEG-EPN had the opportunity to receive 10 Academic licenses of Leapfrog SOFTWARE by ARANZ Geo, company of Christchurch in New Zealand, that was received on May 23th of 2018 installed in the computers laboratory of the Faculty of Geology along with a manual of Leap Frog. People responsible for managing the licenses are Dr. Cristian Vallejo, (Prof. Faculty Geology) who managed the petition process who is a fulltime professor of our career, and Ms. Ximena Flores, who is in charge of said laboratory. These licenses of program will be for recognition and impact in the mining industry of our country.

In the first instance, the project that we would like to undertake and carry out to use the licenses, is the 3D geological and geochemical modeling of the high sulfidation epithermal project GAMA, which is located in the Azuay province, near to Cuenca City (Fig. 1), this project was part of the big project Shyri (Fig. 2). Unfortunately, its study as a final result did not give the discovery of an economically exploitable project. The chapter has the cartographic, geochemical, the drill core and the drill core information of the drillings GAD-11-002 and GAD-11-004. Thanks to the donation of data and materials by the exploration company Cornerstone Ecuador SA (CESA). Thanks to this valuable contribution and in addition to the use of Leapfrog, it will be possible to develop a comprehensive course, through which the use of the program could be put into practice. In addition, we consider that their learning would help us to become aware of the importance of developing our three-dimensional perception of reality.
