QAA Using Technology to Support Assessment and Feedback
March 2015

A set of free, browser-based, open source tools used to create interactive learning resources
known as ‘learning objects’.

The Assessment
• “In groups, design an online information resource for a particular target audience using psychological literature and research in cyberpsychology.”
• Final learning objects peer-assessed using marking rubric
• Xerte demo, online resources, lab and drop-in sessions with support team of learning technologist, academic development tutor and graduate student

The Challenges• Existing staff and student digital literacies
• No external-facing server for Xerte
• Learning curves, keeping track of student progress and trouble-shooting
• Inability of Blackboard to support peer assessment using rubric
• Getting the completed learning objects to target audiences

What the students said…
“It has been interesting researching and collecting information in order to turn it into a learning tool for other people.”
“These could be used to create interactive objects that really teach people in a better way than just reading from a textbook or webpage.”
“It encouraged us to think about different ways of presenting the content and getting the audience engaged.”

Question
Can you think of ways that you could use Xerte to create OERs and facilitate…
•Assessment and feedback
•Enhancement of student/staff digital literacies
•Staff/student partnerships
•Social entrepreneurship
•Student transitions
