General Policies

 Mission Statement 

The Bowen-Thompson Student Union is an innovative, student-centered organization and facility dedicated to the delivery of services and programs that enhance campus life and foster the mission of Bowling Green State University.

General Student Employment Policies

Training• Training/Orientation sessions are held in the

fall for both new and returning employees. These meetings are mandatory.

• Periodic workshops and/or staff meetings will be held throughout the year as in–service training or staff development.

• Employees will be compensated for attending all training sessions as part of the current pay period.

• Training hours will not be considered as part of the employees maximum forty (40) scheduled work hours per pay period (2-week).

General Student Employment Policies

Mandatory Meetings• There are mandatory area meetings held

throughout the semester. • Missing a meeting is equivalent to missing a

shift.• If you are not able to attend a meeting, you

must contact your area supervisor in writing at least 24 hours prior to the meeting to schedule a make–up meeting.

• Employees will be compensated for attending mandatory meetings.

• Employees will not be compensated for make–up meetings.

• Meeting hours will not be considered as part of the employees maximum forty (40) scheduled work hours per pay period (2-week).

Working Your Shift

 BreaksEmployees are allowed breaks, if the following

condition is met: If an employee works 4 hours… A fifteen-minute break is allowed. Employee

does not have to punch out. If employees work 8 hours…-   A 1/2 hour lunch and two fifteen (15) minute

breaks are allowed. The employee must punch-out for lunch, but not for breaks.

 After 5:00 PM, arrangements should be made

with the Student Building Manager for breaks so that normal building operations may be maintained.

Working Your Shift

 BreaksSmoking Employees of the Bowen-Thompson Student

Union may smoke during breaks, or with approval from their area supervisor. Employees who smoke on breaks should stay clear of the main entrances by at least 20 feet.

 Please use common sense during smoking break

and do not block entrances to the building.

Working Your Shift

Late for a Shift•  If an employee is up to twenty (20) minutes

late, he/she will receive a verbal warning from his/her area supervisor and a memo will be placed in his/her personnel file.

• If an employee is late a second time up to twenty (20) minutes, within three (3) months of a previous verbal warning, a written warning will be issued and a letter will be placed in his/her personnel file.

minutes late, he/she will receive a written warning and a letter will be placed in his/her personnel file.

• If an employee is late three (3) times or more a semester, he/she will be placed on probation, and possibly suspended or terminated from employment.

Missed Shift• Employees must work all scheduled shifts +

any signed substituted shifts.

• Failure to report for a scheduled shift is considered a missed shift

• 1st violation=written warning and letter

• Second shift is missed within 3 months of a previous violation=probation and letter

• If on probation, may be released from his/her assigned duties or terminated

Working Your Shift

 Substitutions• Employees may obtain a substitute for those

times/days they are unable to work. This is done by filling out a Substitution Slip (Appendix), no later than 24 hours in advance of that shift.

• The sub slip must be signed, written in the sub book, and initialed by employee’s direct supervisor. If a sub slip has been posted and not signed, the individual responsible for that shift must work.

Simply posting a sub slip does not guarantee that the shift will be taken nor does it relieve you of your responsibility for that shift.

Absences • Report absences to direct supervisor

• After 5:00 PM/weekends,call the Information Center, talk to the Student Building Manager

• Absences must be reported at least two (2) hours before shift or by opening

• Employee is still responsible for finding a replacement for their shift.

• Failure to do so is a missed shift.

 Injury and Illness• Job–related injury or illness must be reported

to your direct supervisor

• The employee should make every attempt to obtain a substitute.

• After 5:00 PM / weekends, employees should contact the Student Building Manager. 

• Employees are not to work while ill.

Personal Responsibilities – Dress

All employees wear staff

shirt during each shift.

Employees should always

appear neat, clean, and

have shirts pressed and

tucked in at all times.

No hats, cut–off jeans, or

bib overalls

Slacks or khaki pants are recommended.

Sweat pants, tattered shorts or jeans, clothing advertising other schools, hats, any revealing type of clothing, or t-shirts w/drugs or alcohol labels are prohibited

Personal Responsibilities – ID Badge

The employeeidentification badge

Should not be worn when

Creating a Positive Image

• Treat all people with respect – the same way you would expect to be treated.

• Be polite and interested in each customer’s opinion, comments, and suggestions.

• Speak up, articulate your words, and use eye contact.

Emergency Procedures – Fire Alarm

• Occupants must immediately leave a building when a fire alarm sounds.

• The BGSU Public Safety Dispatcher will send the Fire Division and University Police to the fire alarm location.

• Only the University Police can call off a Fire Division response, and only after personally investigating the situation.

Emergency Procedures – Fire Alarm

• Fire Division assumes control of the building during a fire alarm response.

• University Police will assist the Fire Division if occupants refuse to evacuate.

• Fire alarm panels are not to be silenced or re-set during a fire alarm response until the Fire Division or University Police gives its authorization.

Emergency Procedures – Bad Weather

In the event of inclement weather, these measures must be

followed to ensure the safety of customers and student employees.

Emergency Procedures - Tornado

Tornado Watch: Building Manager will inform all student employees that conditions for a tornado exist.

Tornado Warning: The Building Manager will inform all student employees that a tornado has been seen nearby.

Signal: Straight tone on campus and city sirens, police cruiser sirens and speakers, and radio and TV news announcements.

Emergency Procedures - Tornado

GO QUICKLY TO TORNADO SHELTER AREA:• Restrooms/stairwells/interior hallways on lowest floor

available• Computer lab near the pub-ground floor• Bookstore – away from glass

If a tornado strikes, curl up on the floor; protect face and head with your arms, blanket, coat, etc. Stay clear of doors and windows.

 Do not leave the area until notified that it is all clear. Information Center is the communication center for the building.
