    Section One - Concept Overview

Organizational Overview: Student Energy is a global not-for-profit that is changing the face of energy by

executing on our mission of opening the eyes of the worlds students to all perspectives on energy.

To achieve our vision of transitioning the world to a sustainable energy future, Student Energy is

creating a movement of young leaders committed to driving innovation and change in the energy

industry over the next 40-60 years.

Our organizational goals are to educate, inspire and unite students to tackle todays global energy

    challenges.

Project Overview: The current approach to educating the Millennial generation on complex energy

topics is ineffective. Todays youth demographic relies on 140 character tweets and highly engaging

video content to be informed on extremely complex events. Traditional energy literacy infrastructure is

seriously out dated to meet the demands of our millennial generation. It can take a decade or longer of

working in the industry to truly grasp the interplay between technology, economics, politics and societal

concerns that factor into all energy related decisions. Couple this with the extreme viewpoints and

conflicting information presented by both sides of energy debates and it makes it very difficult for young

people to truly engage in the industry and understand the challenges it faces. This leaves an entire

generation of youth poorly educated or worse, simply ignoring the energy challenges that face society.

Our Global Energy Education Platform is designed to tackle the two important issues we have

highlighted - content usability and biased presentation - to create a Web 2.0 Educational Platform that

will make it easy, fun and SIMPLE to understand various perspectives on energy topics.

To achieve this vision we plan to create a dynamic series of interconnected web pages on pertinent

energy topics. The pages will combine the best elements of Wikipedia (up-to-date, contributor defined

content) and Coles notes (brevity and conciseness) as well as simple, engaging animated videos1.

Additionally, we will create a perspective spectrum that will allow people to plot their position on a

topic and discuss their viewpoint with others using blog-like functionality.

1The inspiration for the videos comes from the success of the RSA Animate videos that logically, visually and

simply map out complex topics with the digestibility of the content being the #1 priority. You will find an example

of these whiteboard animated videos at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ-J91SwP8w. Another example from

students at our very own International Student Energy Summit events can be found at:

Funding Required: In order to facilitate the development, content creation, resourcing, promotion and

scale-up of this new Global Energy Education Platform, we are seeking funding in the amount of

$250,000 total. These funds will support professional resources and volunteers to brainstorm, validate,

design, build, populate and promote the web platform. We are seeking contributions between $25,000

and $100,000 from various partners to execute this project.

Stakeholder Benefit: With a project as ambitious as our Global Energy Education Platform, the

stakeholder group is large and the benefits are significant. First and foremost, students from around the

world will benefit directly from the educational resource that has been custom tailored to their learning

styles and consumption habits. Post-secondary institutions will benefit from having a more engaged and

informed student base and corporations will benefit due to the fact that new hires will enter theworkforce more informed and engaged than any previous generation. For society at large, this platform

will build awareness and capacity among anyone interested in energy topics and issues. Our partners

and sponsors will receive marketing and PR benefit for supporting such an engaging educational

platform in addition to their specific recognition benefits.

Project Implementation: Student Energy will implement the project, in collaboration with The Seeds

Foundation with a structure and process as follows:

    1. A full needs assessment and project scoping exercise to take place2. A professional web development firm to be hired through a transparent RFP process3. Initial test concepts to be created and validated in the market to ensure true market need4. Once a valuable, effective template has been established, a team of student content creators

and global professional or academic content review experts will be assembled

    5. All content will be drafted and created by students or experts across the globe, with each topicrequiring expert review and approval to ensure factual correctness.

    6. As individual topic pages are completed, they will be rolled out live to ensure a constantlyupdated web page.

    7. Having diverse contributors will ensure content relevance and timeliness an iterative processto keep content current. Every 12 months, all content will undergo an in-depth review to

ensure it is still relevant, factual and exciting

Section Three - Statement of Need

Exciting web Hub to educate Millennials on complex energy topics

When looking at global energy challenges, all parties are in agreement that todays youth and studentswill play an integral part in transitioning the world to a sustainable energy future. The 18-25 year olds of

today will inevitably be tasked with managing the worlds environmental health; they will also be

tomorrows executives and world leaders responsible for meeting future emission targets, resource

allocation issues, and environmental degradation. Whether they are ready for it or not, the millennial

generation will be tasked with meeting the future global energy challenge and the importance of this

    particular generation cannot be understated.

Despite the importance of students in this greater global dialogue, the educational materials available to

them are often inaccessible, out-dated or simply boring. In a generation that has grown up with rapid

fire social media sites like twitter and facebook at their fingertips, lengthy research papers and text

heavy documents simply dont get read and most importantly, dont get shared amongst peers. Rather

than seeing this as a problem to overcome, Student Energy sees the content consumption habits of the

millennial generation as our greatest opportunity.

The challenge in educating and informing this generation is that the media they most frequently share

and consume are not the same formats in which energy education is provided in. Recent studies have

shown that video is the most shared medium online, nearly doubling links to text documents2. For

example the Post Carbon Institute video titled 300 Years of Fossil Fuels in 300 seconds on Youtube

earned over 1.1 million views in one year. The video used the popular RSA Animates style of whiteboard

drawing to very simply walk through a complex topic in under 5 minutes, making the video engaging,

accessible and convenient to share with peers.

We seek to develop an entire suite of high-impact, engaging videos, created by student or experts,

which tackle the worlds leading energy topics. These videos will be housed on wiki-style pages that

encourage exploring other topics as well as sections to dive deeper if a particular topic is of keen

    interest to a student.

The second major need we seek to serve is that of overcoming bias. For students and youth that are un-

informed on complex energy topics, they often perceive that they must immediately pick sides on

individual topics or debates. While energy can be seen as being an incredibly polarized topic, at Student

Energy we strongly believe information and content should be shared from multiple perspectives.

For global collaboration to take place, stakeholders must be able to recognize and appreciate theperspective of those with whom they are working with around the world. A case study where this

manifested itself directly was during our Student Leaders panel at the 2009 International Student

Energy Summit. Two students from North America debated the necessity of mandating smart grid

technology around the world when a passionate student from India said We dont need a smart grid,

we just need a grid; students are still doing homework by candlelight in my village. The look on the

faces of students around the room was priceless and a fantastic indicator that the sharing of

perspectives is an incredible tool to foster global collaboration.

This essence will be incorporated into all of our educational materials through showing the spectrum of

perspectives on each major energy topic.

    Evaluation Mechanism (Analytics)

In pursuing such an ambitious plan, it is important that specific success metrics are established to chart

the health and success of the project. Initially, the following key metrics will be used to evaluate our

    success:

Total site visitors:This encompasses the total number of people that visit a particular topic or view the video through

external channels (youtube, vimeo etc..). With the goal of an average of 200,000 views per topic, this

would result in a total impression reach of 5,000,000 impressions.

Percentage of visitors sharing contentWhile it is difficult to ballpark a target number for this metric, it is crucial to the success of the project. It

will be watched closely and repeated experiments will be run to improve this number over time. Ideally

between 2-4% of our viewers will share or promote our materials in some way.

Number of external sites, educational institutions and others linking to our materialsThis metric is a key determinant of the quality of our materials. The more often we are cited,

referenced, quoted and linked to, the more we are being seen as experts in the field. After two years, it

is hoped that 600 separate organizations will be linking to the Student Energy educational platform.

Additional metrics that will be utilized include:

Traffic from developed vs. developing world (to ensure location bias hasnt taken over) Frequency of comments and dialogue for each topic (to ensure we are starting conversations) Google rankings: The millennial generation was raised on quick search access to all of the

information in the world. Achieving high search rankings in the worlds leading search engine

will drive long term traffic and attention to our programs
