Dear Families,
Meet and Greet Night
Over the past 2 weeks we have had some significant community events in our
school. On Monday, 11 February 2019 we had our ‘Meet and Greet’ night
where families were able to become acquainted with the educators at
Modbury School. It was lovely to see the children introduce their parents to
their teacher’s, share information and begin to form crucial partnerships
between school and home.
Governing Council 2019
The School Governing Council held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on
Monday, 11 February, where committee membership was decided. I would
like to thank the outgoing committee members: Lisa McAteer, Melissa Hewett
and Sarah Wills for their dedication and time given as councillors in supporting
strategic planning and building connections for our community.
Congratulations and thank you to the following parents who have been
elected as Executive Council members for 2019.
Chairperson – Jen Symonds
Deputy Chairperson- Robyn Dowley
Secretary- Ben Kempster
Treasurer- Thomas Wende
Congratulations to newly elected members: Christy-Lee Carpenter, Jafreen
Jalil, Olena Bondarets and Ben Kempster. Thank you to continuing Council
Member: Asmaa Lasheen.
Building Parent and School Partnerships
At Modbury School Preschool to Year 7 we aim to provide an open,
welcoming, inclusive and safe environment for all that enhances the
educational and social development of our students and children. We
recognise how parents play a formative role in the development of their
child’s sense of justice, equity and the dignity and worth of all members of our
school community. Educating children is a process that involve developing
good partnerships between home and school. We understand the
importance of a good working relationship to equip children with the
necessary skills as community members now and into adulthood. Parents act
as one of the most influential role models within a child’s life. It is important that
parents promote and uphold the values of our school community Connect
Create Challenge.
I welcome and encourage parents/carers to participate fully in the life of our
school and to provide a reminder about respectful conduct so that we can
work together to ensure a safe and positive school environment for our
children.

MULTI-CULTURAL MORNING TEA
A morning tea for our EALD families (Families who have a multi-cultural background) was held on
Tuesday 12 February 2019.
It was a great opportunity for families to connect with each other and share their experiences about
Modbury School. Thank you to all who provided delicious dishes from their home country, it added to
the richness of the morning.
We would also like to thank our Kurdish, Arabic, Sinhalese BSSOs (Bi-lingual School Services Officers) for
interpreting during the morning tea. We would also to acknowledge the partnership and support of
the Tea Tree Gully Council.
We look forward to our next meeting on Thursday, 28 March 2019.

What’s happening in STEM for 2019?
What is STEM?
STEM is the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to solve authentic
problems and develop 21st Century Learning Skills.
Why is STEM important?
Through STEM opportunities, students develop resilience, growth mindset skills, collaboration,
empathy and learn to apply the design thinking approach to solve problems. Students make
connections between school and the wider community, life after school and build the
understanding that even children’s ideas and actions can make a difference.
As the STEM coordinator at
Modbury, it is my role to support
teachers to plan and implement
authentic STEM learning
opportunities within Learning
Communities across our site. This
semester, I will be working closely
with teachers and students from
LCC and LCA. Some projects we
have in the works for this semester
already are:
Learning Community C - Outer Space
Explore and Colonise Outside Your World.
Students will explore the possibility of colonising another planet and design a living pod with links to
human impact on Earth, sustainability, livability factors.
Learning Community B - Sustainability
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Living Things and Human Impact.
Students will explore ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, including collecting recyclables to
raise money to adopt a Port River dolphin and reviewing the school’s approach to composting.
Learning Community A - From Farm to Table
A Study of Living Things and Food Production.
Students will build on their understanding of the needs of living things and what happens to food
before it reaches the shop. They will design and build greenhouses to propagate seedlings for our
school garden, help them grow and harvest the produce.
How can you get involved?
We are very keen to make links with our community through STEM opportunities and eager for
community members to get involved. If you are interested in any of the projects listed above, are
involved in an industry that we could link to a STEM project or have another passion you would like
to share with us, please do not hesitate to let myself or your child’s class teacher know.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST (OT) STUDENTS
During Term 1 - 2019, our school is hosting
Occupational Therapist (OT) Students from
the University of South Australia who are
undertaking ‘Community Placement’ as part
of their studies.
The OT Students will commence in Week 3
and work with Students, Teachers and Co-
educators and will be overseen by Maria
Appelt (Deputy Principal) and Kirsty Brumby
(Wellbeing Leader).
If you have any questions about the OT
students and their time at Modbury School,
please do not hesitate to pop into the office

Playgroup
At Playgroup, children and families create great
friendships in a safe and welcoming
environment. Children learn through play,
exploration and sharing. This is often the first setting
where families make connections and develop
friendships.
Playgroup begins with a welcoming song followed
by indoor/outdoor free play. We are very fortunate
to utilise our Preschool facilities including nature
play, vegetable garden, water play and indoor
resources.
Modbury School sees Playgroup as an important
place for families to learn more about Preschool
and seeing children transitioning into their school.
For more information please contact our office on
8264 2027
Session times
Playgroup is held from 9-11am every Friday in the
Preschool during school terms.
We ask families to provide a healthy snack for your
child, ie. a piece of fruit, vegetable sticks and finger
food. Please note we are a nut aware school
therefore do not recommend any nuts including
Nutella, peanut butter etc. Please also bring along
a bottle of water.
There is a small charge each week to help with
running costs.
We look forward to welcoming you to Playgroup.
Head lice
We have had a number of cases of head lice in the school,
particularly in Reception to Year 2 levels. Could all families
please be vigilant in checking their child's hair.
Here are some facts about head lice:
Head lice are spread by personal contact or by
sharing combs, brushes, hats and other clothing.
Please ensure your child has their own hat at school
so they are not borrowing a class or office hat.
The affected individual and family members and the
home should be treated.
Remember, one head louse + one head louse = two
head lice = the beginning of a head-lice infection.

My group had an awesome day
surfing, snorkelling, sailing and
kayaking. When we went snorkelling

a bit scary at first, but it was fun.
Eathan– I had an amazing time
surfing, sailing and snorkelling.
Nikki, Sierra, Aleena, Emily, Anika,

We really enjoyed sailing. Some of
us lost our hats overboard when
they blew off in the wind. It was
such a fun adventure trying to get
our hats and tipping over our
boat!
Damian- My favourite activities was
snorkelling, I wished we could
explored even further.
Brooklyn - My favourite activity was
boogie boarding because the
waves were huge, one of them
pushed me over.
Frankie- Sailing was great because
you could sit on the boat and relax
with your friends, but you have to
be careful so your boat doesn’t tip
over!
Owen- My favourite activity was
sailing, we had a amazing ride. The
instructors were great.
