Student Government Candidates
President
David Ashley
Candidate Statement
Hey CI!
It is with great enthusiasm that we announce our candidacy for President and Vice President of
Student Government. We are of differing academic backgrounds, allowing for a diverse
collection of ideas on how to better CI and its student body. Dave is majoring in Biology with
minors in Chemistry and Political Science and hopes to become a practicing Physician. Steven is
double majoring in International Economics and Political Science with a minor in Social
Business and hopes to work for the United Nations and also become a Teacher. Together, we
have served tirelessly as members of Student Government – Dave as one of nine Senators and
Steven as Director of Communications. In addition to our official capacities in Student
Government, we serve on high level campus committees, participate in over ten Student
Organizations, and work on campus. Over the last year, we have taken notice of the areas our
school could be made better. We are passionate to further unify the CI student body through
involvement in student organizations, as well as participation in many school events. In addition,
we both strongly believe that the budget cuts currently taking place are a detriment to higher
education. We will try our best to lobby the California State Legislature in order to prevent
further cuts and possibly help to restore some state supportive funding. We are a team of proven
student leaders with great accomplishments that have furthered the wellbeing of the CI student
body. Please consider giving us the opportunity to continually work towards accomplishing our
goals and the goals of our great student body.
Thank you,
Dave Ashley and Steven Jordan

Christine Wamba
Candidate Statement
Hello CSU Channel Islands, my name is Christine Wamba and I am running for Student
Government Vice President. I will be great for the position of Vice President because I have
many ideas to bring to the campus and I want to be the voice for the students of CSU Channel
Islands. CSU Channel Islands has great opportunities and support from the faculty and staff, for
students. However, I have noticed that it’s hard to let all the students know about these great
opportunities. That is where I would help and inform the students what CI has to offer them. I
have been involved with Student Government for three years starting as an Intern, elected
Senator and then appointed Chief of Staff. I know the importance of the organization not only for
the students but for the campus as a whole. With great attention to detail and great organization

vote for Christine Wamba for Student Government Vice President.

opening up opportunities for the greater good of the community. Throughout my time spent and
involvement with this campus I believe I am suited to run for the position to represent the CI

so I’m well aware of all the policies within housing and how they operate; I am a member of the

Candidate Statement:
Hello Fellow Dolphins!
I’m excited to inform you that I am running to be part of ASI as a senator for the school year
2012-2013. I am currently a freshman pursuing a BA in performing arts. My goal is to one day
operate my own theater and make it accessible to low-income youth. I know that providing
financially limited teens with tools that help them express themselves through art, builds stronger
and more socially accepting communities. I started my year off strong, being part of Pod Squad
and with that same friendliness I plan to welcome any student interested in take part of ASI. I am
proud to have been a part of Back-To-Basics 2012 where my definition of leadership was
redefined and definitely strengthened. As an EOP student I have come to comprehend and
embrace the diversity of CSUCI.I have taken advantage of my leadership opportunities here at
CSUCI and I believe those experiences have helped shape me into a leader with the ability to
take on the role of Senator, a leader willing to speak for the student body to ensure that this
campus continues to provide the resources necessary for success. If elected into ASI as a senator
I will serve as a medium of communication and action between the students and their
government.
Platform:
Increase communication between the students and SG.
Promote student government meetings that are open to the students so that their issues
can be personally addressed.
Set up anonymous suggestion boxes in accessible areas where most student activity
occurs.
Actively meet with different departments of CI to become aware of their needs and
then report back to fellow senators to see how to we can solve these needs for the
benefit of the student body.
Display CI Pride through fun and team building events
If we can set up a booth that provides information and CI wear to students on a more
constant basis as opposed to only orientation or big school events, then CI pride and
the resources CI provides will also be constant in the minds of students.
Become personally familiar with different departments of CI
Have entire Student Government attend events put on by clubs and organizations to
show our support.
Be present at orientations for incoming students or welcoming events to have out
faces known and show students that we are there for them as leaders and friends.
Have a representative attend resident meetings to promote and inform students on
ASI activity.

Salutations CI Students!
It is with great pleasure I announce that I am running for the Senate position within CSU
Channel Island’s Student Government! I am currently a freshman with the intent to major in
political science with an emphasis on communications. I am a political science major not only
because I am passionate about politics but because I thrive on the success of group organizations,
whether it be five or five-hundred thousand people, and I felt political science was the only
subject I could see myself develop into the individual I prosper to be. I may be an optimist, but I
believe one person can make the biggest difference. My past may not involve much time at CSU
Channel Islands but I feel it has made me the best candidate for this leadership position. I have
been involved with school government activities since I can remember. In my 5th
grade year of
grade school I was awarded a significant position in the San Diego Police Department Safety
Patrol Program named first major, and at the same time vice president of my elementary school’s
student council. In my middle school years I played volleyball and was always looking to lead
the team to a victory, and as high school approached I qualified for Camarillo High School’s
varsity volleyball team my freshman year. The following season I played as a co-captain and
ultimately ending the season our team had won league and moved onto CIF. As junior year
approached I decided to focus on academics and extracurricular activities upon ending my
volleyball career. I sub sequentially ran for treasurer of the Camarillo Rotary Act Club that I had
been a member of all of high school and from there managed fundraising and all money issues
for the club that year. Ultimately entering my senior year of high school I was elected Adolfo
Camarillo High School’s Associated Student Body President and the only Oxnard Union High
School District Student Representative representing more than 16,000 students. My senior year I
looked to not only make my campus a better place but the district as a whole. Hearing different
views and personal perspectives enthralled me to look into making a difference in the most
discussed topics or issues. I feel that the past ten years of my life whether at CSU Channel
Islands or not have made me the well-rounded person I am and I plan to continue voicing others
opinion in the most positive light I can till it is heard. So finally if I am elected I promise to
dedicate my time, experiences, and organization to our university’s student government in any
way possible.
Platform
Inform Student Body on fees they pay and where they ultimately end up
-Organize a meeting with whoever oversees the finance department of CSU Channel
Islands.
-I will find ways for students to contribute their thoughts on making a difference in the
fiscal aspect of our education, if that means increasing attendance at our weekly meetings.
Increase school population knowledge of Student Government and purposes we serve
-Create a biography for each member that students have easy access to.
-Let students know how they can get in touch with each member and best times to reach
them.
Encourage student participation in university events

active.

Candidate Statement
I am very happy to report that I am running for Senate for the upcoming year of 2012-
2013. I am currently a junior, double-majoring in Political Science and Communication with an
environmental emphasis. After graduation, I intend to continue on to get my master's degree in
International Environmental Policy. I am extremely passionate about the environment and it
gives me great pride to attend a school with a green campus. Since I transferred to CI in the Fall
of 2011, I have taken every possible opportunity to educate my peers on how to adopt
sustainable living habits, whether through a class project, paper, or presentation. I know that as a
Senator in Student Government, my voice would reach beyond the confinements of a classroom,
and I would have the ability to educate CI students on a broad scale about why their campus is
green and what they can do to contribute to their school's environmental sustainability. I would
also research what other college campuses are doing to stay green and explore whether or not
their methods could be implemented at CI. As a Senator, I would continuously strive to keep
lines of communication open with CI students, so that I may efficiently represent their wants and
needs. I have always been a natural leader, and I would be honored to have the opportunity to
exercise my leadership abilities in Student Government. If elected to serve as a member of the
Senate, I would be representative of the CI student body by doing everything in my power to
make positive changes to CSUCI and being the voice of progress for environmental concerns.
Platform
Create a "Greening the Campus" campaign at CSUCI

Set up suggestion boxes around campus so that students can contribute their ideas,
questions, and concerns regarding the campaign
Reach Out to other CSU Campuses to Share Ideas about Sustainability Practices
Research successful student-initiated environmental programs on other CSU
campuses for possible implementation at CI
Share CI's sustainability practices with other CSU campuses so that they may
implement them as well
Submit op-ed articles to CI View and Island News
Write and submit articles to increase interest and awareness of environmental issues

school teacher, not only because I enjoy seeing the success of people, but because a young mind
is a developing mind. Most successful students look back on their education and have found a
positive influence at an early age, and I hope to be that positive influence to children.
Throughout my short time at Channel Islands I have been involved with many different areas on
campus. This past summer I served as an Orientation Leader, which consisted of me being a
mentor to incoming students. I also work for Housing and Residential Education as the
Residence Hall Association Vice President. With this, I have had an opportunity to put on
multiple programs for the residents in which fit their wants. Also, with this position I act as one
of the liaisons between the students and administration. In addition to those positions I am a
Student Assistant in the Student Leadership Programs office. There, I work with information
involving clubs and organizations on campus. This semester I have been the Events Coordinator
Specialist, meaning I have coordinated the 3 events, spring involvement Fair, Back to Basics
Leadership Retreat, and Student Leadership Awards, that Student Leadership hosts. I have
attended the annual Back to Basics Retreat for 2 years in a row, first as a participant, and then as
an active leader. Attending Back to Basics allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and learn
the traits of a CI leader. Lastly, I volunteer my time as a member in the Leaders in Education
Awareness Program. We give tours of our campus and present a college presentation to K-8
grade students in the hopes that they will take the steps to go to college. Being a part of different
areas on campus has allowed me to gain many different experiences. If I am elected to serve as a
Senator I know that my experience working with different professional staff and acting in
different positions makes me applicable to represent the entire student body as a whole.

Candidate Statement:
I would first like to say that I am glad to have the opportunity to be able to run for
Student Government. This is my announcement that with great pleasure I will be running for the
Senate position for the upcoming year.
This is my second semester at Cal State Channel Islands, and as a freshman I am working
towards my Communication Major. Within my major I am emphasizing the non-profit aspect, in
which I hope to be able to be a humanitarian and work for organizations such as the United
Nations as well as other efforts in international relations. I believe that everyone should have
basic fundamental rights, as well as opportunities such as the right to freedom, religion, health,
education, and better living conditions.
During my time at CSUCI I have been fortunate enough to take some advantages of the
educational as well as leadership opportunities which have shaped me into what a CI leader is. In
my spring semester I am currently volunteering at the University Preparation School associated
with Cal State Channel Islands, where I am assisting teachers in aiding students to reach their
goals of education. Volunteering is one of my passions, and so I find helping fourth grade
students really betters me knowing I am helping the youth work towards a good education. I
have also attended the Back to Basics Leadership Retreat; teaching me about what a good leader
is and has exposed me to factors of what makes an effective leader and which skills/knowledge I
will take for life. The class which has given me strong Communication Skills was Doctor
Sawyer's Public Speaking Class, a class which has given me confidence in presenting, taught me
how to speak well, and shown me how to communicate effectively.
If I am elected on as a Student Government Senator, I know my positive attitude as well as
leadership skills will allow me to promote community and encourage civil engagement.

Hi Dolphin Fans!
My name is Chelsea Vinas and I am pleased to inform you that I am running to be a Student

experienced a couple leadership opportunities. I have been able to serve as a freshman intern

at Back-to-Basics Leadership Retreat. During this retreat I learned the true importance behind the

Candidate Statement
Fellow CI Students,
I am excited about this upcoming school year and my opportunity to represent you as a Student
Government Senator. Currently, I am a junior majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in
Biology. I have a variety of experiences as both a commuter and transfer student that I will be
able to bring to this campus. I transferred to CI after attending both Moorpark College and
California Lutheran University. Both schools had some great programs and initiatives that I
would like to see implemented at CI. For example, CLU held regular commuter lunches that
were a great opportunity to congregate and meet other commuters. Another program that I felt
gave the staff insight into the lives of students were focus groups for minority students that were
aimed at surveying how to better integrate and give minority students a variety of more effective
opportunities. My past leadership experiences on and off campus will help me make
improvements at CI for your benefit. I worked for three years at a large corporate office where I
worked closely with executives and performed tasks for different departments. If elected as a
Student Government Senator, I am confident that I have the skills to communicate effectively,
represent the student body professionally, and ultimately make a change for you.
Platform
Getting You Involved on Campus:
Implementing a more effective outreach for commuter students. Creating commuter
lunches and/or breakfasts on a consistent monthly basis with marketing done via global e-
mail and through social networks.
Work to improve how students get involved at CI. Streamlining paperwork processes to
start a new club or organization. Keeping the CI students aware of all club and
organization activities and how they can become involved through social networks and a
universal activity calendar on the school’s website.
Market Student Government meetings to clubs and organizations to get their feedback
and assistance in getting students involved.
Increase Sustainability and Awareness:
Implementing a campaign to have clubs and organization electronically submit their
posters and events to be placed on the campus website or be sent in a weekly email blast.
Increasing water bottle refill stations around campus and awareness that these stations
exist.
Implement University Hour by 2013:
University Hour is one hour twice a week when no classes are scheduled enabling clubs
and organizations to have meetings or all-campus events to be held so that the entire
campus community has the opportunity to participate.
Work with President Rush, Dr. Sawyer, and the rest of the student body to prove that it is
a feasible and necessary program to maximize student involvement.

Ben Wilson
Candidate Statement
I Benjamin Wilson am seeking to run for student government Senator for the 2012-2013 year. I
have been a member of this great organization in the past and hope to continue providing
students with aid to their problems and answers to their questions. I went into student
government because I wanted to see changes on campus for the better and to help other students.
My constituency has been Anacapa Village. Working alongside a fellow senator and the RHA
president we have worked to bring the voices of these students to administrators and have seen
changes on campus including staplers in the study rooms. It is my hope that you will work with
me next year to continue helping not only the students of Anacapa and housing but any student
that needs the helping hand of student government on their side. It is my hope that everyone who
reads this will have a wonderful day and remember to go vote because it’s you the students who
are at the heart of this university and while we may act as your voice you are its heart.
Platform
1. Continue to work with students in housing to bring their voices to administrators and help
them get the resources they need like the staplers in the study rooms.
2. Work with fellow senators, students, administrators and faculty to create a more in depth
smoking policy.
3. Work to get students from different areas of school be they commuter or housing to be
better informed of events going on at campus and nearby in the community.
4. See about getting RHA a seat at the table of the ASI entities as they represent a large
constituency which is built into the workings of the campus.

students and display them in a format that students can take with them upon graduating from the
campus.

Candidate Statement
Hello!
I apply for the ASI board position with excitement, passion, and interest. I am currently in my
fourth year at CI and will be graduating in Spring of 2013. I am continuing to work towards my
communication major with a minor in Spanish and Psychology. With my experience so far and
the variety of education I have tried to receive I hope to bring my skills into the field of Student
Affairs after I graduate. I want to make a difference in the lives of others and the combination or
the three paths of education I will be following will help me reach a vast majority to make that
impact. I have continued my involvement in many activities. I have been a member of the
Rotaract club since my freshmen year and am now the president. My experiences in orientation
both summers as well as the extracurricular activities have helped me develop and personally
flourish in my current positions. I am currently a resident assistant in Santa Cruz village and
greatly enjoy working with and spending time among the residents. Seeing many different
aspects of the university from my positions on campus has sparked my desire to learn more about
the different areas of the university. I feel that this role will help my professionalism and
leadership and will also bring me closer to my peers. I feel that I can bring a unique view and a
positive attitude that would benefit the ASI board. I want to help represent the students and help
the students feel represented.
Platform
Think of ways to get the word out about ASI
Many students are unfamiliar with what ASI does and we should show the students
where their money is going and what benefits it sustains.
Approach areas on campus and speak to students. Let them know we want their input.
Increase advertising and create creative advertisements
Keep a timeline for marketing materials and make sure visual advertisements are up
for at least a week.
Open artwork up to students to see if they have creative ways to catch their fellow
student’s eye.
Concentrate on multiple areas of advertising like email, website posts, fliers, posters,
public announcements etc.
Work with ASI to make the students feel like they are more involved with what is
going on in their campus.
Have members of the ASI board survey students at events to get their critique and
suggestions about leadership on campus.
Schedule meeting sessions open to students where they can offer suggestion and ask
questions about the items being handled and discussed within ASI. Working with the
SEAL center may be beneficial getting information out to club presidents and
receiving feedback.
